depends on the action. If the movie glorifies the action of a slaughterhouse, well''.... I like movies that make one delve into subject matter of one's guru's teachings. I try to see in this light. Like "Run, Lola, Run". Thats an action flick that is violent, criminal behavior, but it also depicts multiple realities, and which one to pick, so I can justify that such a movie is quite thought provoking. Same with action movies like "Fight Club" and other rather intelligent films. I like Johnny Depp movies (pre pirate) because he always held out for such intelligent films like "Dead Man", "Edward Scissorshands", et al. I even loved a romantic movie by him (some callem "chick flicks", but I dont use the word chick) called "Don Juan Di Marco", because of the otherworldly nature of the movie. But we are what we take in. We are what we eat, say, do, observe, etc. Our senses form our consciousness, so we always remember that consciousness must rule and be master of senses other than being drawn (and ruled) by the assortment of what the world has to offer in forms of art. thats what I like about the controversies of Srila Prabhupadas wonderful storytelling. There is always ways to use these stories to tell our own stories, to derive meaning, to earmark devotional life. It is the mentality of religiosity, which means that these puri priests have no knowledge and understanding of Bhagavad Gita, where religion is placed in the "abandon all varieties of" catagory. Religion is sick, man made, polluted by the modes of materialism, and the basis for all suicidal tendencies of humankind, from war to child abuse, of fraud, of horrific treatment of humankind by elitists who are not accepted by those they pledge allegiance to (Krsna, Allah, Jehovia, Lord Jesus, etc.) We can educate ourselves by witnessing the attitude of these fools. Priests are only valid in religion, so any idea of empowering eccliastic priests is very dangerous to any spiritual ideologies. From mullahs, gurus, popes, all who practice exclusionary sectarioan religions, all should be abandoned, which means withdraw support from anything they stand for. Abandon is a severe term, it doesnt mean that it is okay to go for the social scene, to declare commonality brotherhood because the same songs are3 sung or the same pictures are appreciated. I like the dreams that happen while fully awake, like my story of Mgabe posted recently on the topic titled Uddhava Gita discussion. I really like the traumatic dreams of me gettin swallowed up by molten lava or having a shotgun going off in my face in an innercity gang war. Or the ones that are serial dreams that continue occasionally for years and tears. Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has written many great books concerning adjustment of behavior to enable one to attain vaisnava character. Regret of ones past sinful activity and massive subject matter concerning adjustment of certain habits to make one less prone to sinful activity and more prone to actual spiritual practice is well covered. Regret is very positive, contrary to bogus psychology eugenics philospphy present in our crushed kali yuga world. Such regret is the heart of the vaisnava, even stalwart pure persons who never made mistakes like Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura are full of regret for their forgetfulness of Lord Krsna. Srila Rupa Goswami makes all the vaisnava laws, all the regulations, but in summary, He concludes there is only one positive order, always remember Krsna, and only one regulative principle, to never forget Krsna. Sometimes, we even see arrangements for sinful activities to make one dive deep into regret to purify us. Perhaps in your own case, had you not engaged in questionable behavior (again, minor offense, mode of passion, not ignorance like taking heroin or crack cocaine), the regret would not be there, thus no extra thought about spiritual life, perhaps no thought of how to improve, to minimize materialistic tendency by positive sadhana bhakti purification. Sadhana Bhakti, hearing, chanting harinama, etc under the guidance of a bonafide spiritual master, this is the full prayaschitta. No extra ritual is required or even desirable, because many rituals produced by religiosity have karmic implications that may be more detrimental than the initial sinful act. Your expressed regret is done with, chant hare krsna and your life will be sublime. Your association, one who regrets sinful activities, is very desirable. This whole concept is highly erroneous. We will be drawn, thy will be done, this is a fact. Drawn. In the early daze, there wasnt a whole lot of this "pure devotee" nonsense.
