Only sudras are in Kali Yuga, and most have not even risen to that level, most are never in the Varna asrama catagory. Abortion is heavy business. We are advised to not preach to the faithless, Lord Jesus warns us not to throw pearls before swine. I say men should govern their own bodies, and I seem to lean toward pro choice ideas because evil men with no compassion who have impregnated many without taking responsibility are the so-called anti abortionists. My first instinct upon reading the title was to say ISKCON because of the potency of the founder acarya, Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami. But Ive been in exile for 35 years, so this maybe wouldnt be good advice. My advice is rather than decide which temple school to enter, refer instead to Science of Self Realization, second chapter, by Srila Prabhupada, where he describes how one should study a guru to see if he is one you can surrender to. If I was starting out with the knowledge of persons that I have over forty years of experiance, Id opt and study the missions of Sri Jayadwaita Swami, Srila Paramadwaiti Swami, Sri Tripourari Swami, Sri Narayana Swami, among others. When selecting a potential guru, one must be certain and never take shortcuts. You dont marrty a pretty girl you see walking down the street because of the impression she leaves, nor do you mnarry one who is said to be chaste, intelligent. etc. Serious business, and it is not "until death do we part", because ones relationship with guru is beyond birth anbd death. Prabhupada was not overly critical of our heroes. He acknowledged their roles in our advancement. Haribol. This is not easy topic, because answers by citing the Lord's version go both ways. In the case of Lord Jesus and Haridas Thakur, tolerance against great abuse was how they were moved by the Supreme Paramatma. Yet, in the case of others, like the Pandavas, the victims of great abuse were encouraged to destroy the perpetrators. Spiritual action is that which is inspired by the Lord in the Heart, not moved by the mode of passion. Actions of anger are truely forbidden for all vaisnavas via instruction from Krsna to Arjuna. So the proper action against violence is to go ahead and kill the person as long as passionate anger is not involved. This is why Im against the death penalty, because though capital punishment is allowed in vedic culture. if action is carried out in anger, like the USA does it, vengeful, reprisal, retribution, etc, such things do not fit into the Vedic model of proper behavior. Only when the state is truely seeking the best result for both the victim AND the criminal, can such a thing be just. But never in capital punishment debates in the USA is "Mercy for the criminal" addressed in the act of putting him to death eve4n enters the discussion. Because the state is not vaisnava, in fact, the state is grossly avaisnava, against all good principles of religion. An abuser must be stopped. My spiritual master gave me three choices, and none of them were to kill the opponant. First, my job is to defeat his abuse with knowledge, but only a first class devotee can be so persuasiver to turn de4mons into devotees. The second option is to run away, and seek out only vaisnava association, never coming into contact with the demon again. The third option is to commit suicide, but should only be done if one cannot run away. haribol, folks, hope the winter is tolerable. Apology and forgiveness are linked, and are very important issues to discuss. My point here is the spiritual value of apology. Nothing to do with the offended, even though right of refusal is in the hands of the offended, and forgiveness is not complete unless apology is accepted. But the act of apology, wheteher accepted or not, is a deep spiritual practice. One develops humility by placing oneself in a regretful mode for offenses that occur no matter how hard one tries to avoid them. Actually, Srila Prabhupada, when he took on us uncultured students, explained the "ritual" of offering each other humble obiesancies. This act, which must be performed by cultured persons to, according to Bhagavad gita, is the worship and honor due to elder family members, religious folk, spiritual teachers, and other honorable folk. We place our heads on the ground and ask forgiveness for all the damage caused by us simply by taking yet another birth. Apology is an extension of the offering of obiesancies and addresses not only the soothing of the offended, but a unique act of contrition by the offender. The spiritual value to the offender is much greater (IMHO) than any value in repairing a broken relationship. But it is always nice to receive acceptance when one apologizes. We know the story of how lost durvasa was until his offense was mitigated, and even Lord Narayana declared powerlessness to forgive one mans offense to another. But even without acceptance, the apology itself is a great thing to do, even for the smallest things. Srila Prabhupada basically did not object to Yogananda's school. In fact, in about 1969, he toured Yogananda's SRF facility in Pacific Palisades, CA. This tour was because he had apprecoation for the way SRF maintained their asrama facility, the basic attractive nature of the place, etc. He was envisioning patterning his ISKCON movement on SRF, which he largely did before leaving this realm, with the farms, embassy-type centers, etc., all over the world. Philosophically, there were differences, especially in their commentaries on Bhagavad Gita. But Yogananda did not really teach the "I am God" philosophy, nor did he advertize himself as God. Acintya bheda bheda tattwa is a simultaneous oneness and difference philosophy that seems to only spring from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, while other hindus, even Vaisnavas, seldom consider. This idea that oneness can eventually be realized was forcefully defeated by Srila Prabhupada, but Yogananda, yogi bhajan and a few other sufis and transcendentalists were not his adversaries. Prabhupada was mainly focused on the cheating by Sai Baba, Muktinanda, Mehar Baba types who would pretend they were Krsna without any attractiveness whatsoever. A lot of hippies were influenced by this monism, especially the LSD mystics from leary's group, and Prabhupada took this mission on to prevent them from being destroyed by this blatant form of atheism. The tour of SRF in 1969 produced a controversy as well. Srila Prabhupada, purportedly, told some of his disciples there that SRF policy of initiating disciples for Yogananda well past his disappearance was a bogus practice, that such relationships must be with the mutual acceptance of both the guru and disciple.
