1. Yasomatinandana: Is the original body of the spirit soul a human form?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> Madhudvisa: The question is that whether the eternal form of the spirit soul is a human form or is it… Prabhupada: Yes, human form. God is also human form. “Man is made after the shape of God.” I think there is in the Bible. Is it not? So God is also like human form. Here you see Krsna, two hands, two legs. Hari-sauri: How do we understand, then, that there are peacocks and flowers and trees in the spiritual world? Are these not eternal forms? Prabhupada [decribing material form first]: Yes. They are more covered. 2. Can Krishna and Guru be found within one’s heart? Then sent to find you, no matter where you are? "Krsna is in the heart and that He can do anything, even put an elephant through the eye of a needle Why not? He is God". <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> I remember the amazing story of a boy who went into an old Cathedral in Melbourne on February 18th 1972 to desperately pray to God within his own heart and within the Church for guidance and direction, crying out within, ‘Oh my Lord, please show me the way’. He had entered that church in a totally helpless condition, prayed, and begged to God to ‘please’ show him the way. He felt totally useless and lost in this world and believed no one on the planet has any real understanding of Spiritual life. He had experienced so many from Christianity, TM, Yogananda, Kahlil Gibran, Mere Baba, and Timothy Leary to Lennon. But something was missing. What could he do? Who could he turn too as a ‘personal’ guide? He tried so many paths, realizing he was not enlightened enough to just accept God in the heart as his only Guru and guide, he needed someone to be there embodied right in front of him. He new so many people were already his Guru’s or teacher by showing him so many tasks from day to day in different fields, but there was still something missing, he never had a initiating Spiritual Mater. There was something not quite right. Something that Books just could never give him that would help him advance to the next stage of Spiritual re-establishment. He needed that personal touch to eulogize the teachings of God he was searching for within his own heart. So here he was, on his hands and knees in this marvellous old Cathedral praying for guidance, for leadership, for association, for a Spiritual Master. It was during those prayers he heard this low pitched mumbling sound; he looked up and saw a devotee of Krsna standing there looking at religious artefacts. Something amazing just fell into place for this young boy on that hot Summers day in February 1972, call it intuition or whatever, but he new that God in the heart had answered his prayer for the ‘personal embodied guidance’ of a Spiritual Master that he so desperately needed. What’s more, the power of God in his heart was a truly amazing experience, that seemed unbelievable, or more to the point, no less than a miracle. The young Krsna devotee had also left a magazine on the seat; the boy picked it up, found where the Temple was and left the Cathedral knowing exactly what to. The date was February 18 1972. On arriving at the Temple, he found a festive atmosphere; it was the Appearance day of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Some will say that was a coincidence however, this boy knew from deep within his heart, it was Krsna IN the heart directing him to the most auspicious day of the Vaishnava calendar. The young boy shaved up that day and moved into the Temple. A week and a half later His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada arrived in Melbourne. With tears in eye, the young boy presented Srila Prabhupada with a beautiful red rose at the Melbourne Airport. This boy also was previously convinced before entering the Cathedral, that an embodied guru just doesn’t exist. He had now realized that Krsna is in the heart and that He can do anything, even put an elephant through the eye of a needle. Why not? He is God. This means if one looks deep enough within their own heart, believing it necessary to have an embodied Guru instructing them as a prominent initiating teacher above all others, then Krsna, from within the heart, will direct a bonafide Guru to you, WITHOUT A DOUBT. Remember, the boy never went searching for Krsna, he just prayed to God within his own heart and God sent him Krsna and Guru, twice. At the Cathedral where he was directed by a devotee (Sharmananda das) to Lord Caitanya’s Appearance day (where he was asked to play the part of Haridas Thakur in a play) and again when Srila Prabhupada, his Guru, came to Melbourne 10 days later. The point here is the embodiment of Guru does exist if you want. and Krsna will sent him if you want. It all depends on us. If we are convinced we do not need an embodied Guru, then Krsna from within the heart will not send one, as you desire. But even if you’re in the faraway corner of the planet, if you REALLY want the help and association of an embodied Guru, then Krsna from within the heart WILL send you one. You couldn’t get a place further away from the rest of the world than down under Melbourne Australia. This young boy never found Prabhupada, Prabhupada came all the way down there and found him. Although to be satisfied with the Guru in the form of his books can also be very personal and instructing, I just believe some of us need the personal embodied touch of a Guru as well, simply for the purpose of helping us with their personal association and instructions. This is because we are really not that advanced to do it on our own just with books. That’s how I feel anyway. Krsna is in the heart that we must NEVER forget. God’s representative will come to us in the embodied form if we want, if we pray unconditionally, if we learn to have faith in Krsna in the heart. Why not? The young boy in the story previously found many ‘gurus’ but none of them found him. He eventually saw through them all and just kept praying and new His Guru (Prabhupada), who found him eventually, was the answers to his helpless prayers back then 36 years ago It’s a question of what one really wants. This may mean that one can only accept Prabhupada through his books because of a world in crisis, struggle, and suspicion in this age of Kai-yuga but remember, that has nothing to do with Krsna in our heart. The material world is always in crisis but the Guru is ALWAYS one and represents Krishna within our own hearts, and is always somewhere externally here on the planet. Krishna in our hearts is always accompanying us EVERYWHERE, therefore He can also externally manifest here on the planet in the representative form of the Guru – if you really want. That is up to us. And yes, he will appear just like magic, beyond the juvenile meaning of that word. Trust Krishna in you heart. You do not think He will manifest externally for you no matter how corrupt and fallen this world is?? He will send you His embodied representative to you if you pray and look within you own heart. It is not magic, it is recognising what real reality is, seeing with clear eyes. Look within your own heart and Krishna will respond by sending you an embodied bonafide Guru you can trust to initiate you and take you back home back to Godhead. Krsna WILL send His embodied initiating bonafide Guru when we are ready, when we need such association and the personal embodied guidance to help us understand and then initiates us into the guru-shishya parampara, until then read Prabhupada's books for they are also your Guru that found you.
3. From Hari Sauri prabhu Here’s a very appropriate question considering the time of the year. This is from Acyuta prabhu in the CIS: “In the spiritual world there is no factor of time. In the material world there is a past, the present and the future. In spiritual world only the present. I cannot understand it.” “How it is possible to understand, that in the spiritual world there is no past and the future? For example, if I have drunk a glass of water, it means, that process of drinking has remained in the past! This process cannot be all time in present time?!… Even if this process will occur in the spiritual world, if I have jumped in water or I sit down on a chair, this action has already come to pass, that is remains in the past. How these actions can be all time in present time? Please, explain to me it is in the detailed image!” Answer: Understanding time is very difficult. This is a big topic and we cannot answer all the aspects in a short blog entry. However, here are a few observations that may help you to get a better understanding. Time is the force by which everything in the material world changes. It is the ultimate master of all living beings. It moves everything, and when there is no influence of time, there is no movement, nor variety: SB 3.26.10 The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: The unmanifested eternal combination of the three modes is the cause of the manifest state and is called pradhana. It is called prakrti when in the manifested stage of existence. PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada The Lord points out material nature in its subtle stage, which is called pradhana, and He analyzes this pradhana. The explanation of pradhana and prakrti is that pradhana is the subtle, undifferentiated sum total of all material elements. Although they are undifferentiated, one can understand that the total material elements are contained therein. When the total material elements are manifested by the interaction of the three modes of material nature, the manifestation is called prakrti. … The actual explanation of pradhana, however, is given here: when the cause and effect are not clearly manifested (avyakta), the reaction of the total elements does not take place, and that stage of material nature is called pradhana. Pradhana is not the time element because in the time element there are actions and reactions, creation and annihilation. Nor is it the jiva, or marginal potency of living entities, or designated, conditioned living entities, because the designations of the living entities are not eternal. One adjective used in this connection is nitya, which indicates eternality. Therefore the condition of material nature immediately previous to its manifestation is called pradhana.” SB 11.3.8 “In the Third Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam Lord Kapiladeva teaches that the material nature originally exists in an inert state of equilibrium called pradhana. When Lord Visnu casts His potent glance in the form of kala, or time, material interactions take place, culminating in the variegated creation of the material cosmos. “In this verse it is stated that at the end of universal time the same kala that originally incited the female nature into manifestation again withdraws the cosmos into its original state of inert nonmanifestation. According to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, the time potency itself, kala, is then withdrawn, and it merges into the Supreme Soul, who manifests Himself as the original cause of material nature (anadir adir govindah sarva-karana-karanam [bs. 5.1]).” [end quote] What we understand as time is really a figment of our imagination in the sense of there being a past, present and future. We tend to ‘measure’ time by observing the changes that it causes to our bodies and the surrounding environment. However, the soul is fixed and immutable and does not change, so for the soul there is no past or future, only the present, or rather his own presence. Material elements also do not change. Different states of energy cannot be either created or destroyed and in their fundamental states they remain the same. Material elements are the energy of the Supreme Lord and are therefore eternal. The only thing that does change are the combinations of material elements into various forms. These combinations are provided so that the individual living beings can fulfill their various desires. It is the presence of a living force within these combinations of matter give them the appearance of life. When the life force is withdrawn, the forms simply dissolve. The souls remain, the material elements remain. Since these forms do not remain permanently, they are simply an illusion. Thus there is no past, nor is there a future. There is only the continuous presence of the souls, and the material elements. Time in the material world is the force that moves the individual soul from one situation to another in search of fulfillment of his desires. Time is the supreme regulator. Time is Krsna. What we call time is simply the influence of Krsna without realization of His person. Srila Prabhupada describes time as the impersonal energy of the Supreme Lord. In the spiritual world, Krsna is continuously present to His parts and parcel living entities. He dominates everything, He is everything. Time, or the sense of being, is therefore simply the sense of Krsna’s personal presence and one’s relationship with Him, and nothing more. Since Krsna is eternal and the soul is eternal, there is no past nor any future but simply the loving exchanges between Krsna and His devotees which are endless in their variety. The forms in the spiritual world are all spiritual. They are eternal, and yet they can change. How they can change was described by Srila Prabhupada in a talk given in Melbourne on May 20, 1975: Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.1.1-4 — Melbourne, May 20, 1975 Yasomatinandana: Is the original body of the spirit soul a human form? Madhudvisa: The question is that whether the eternal form of the spirit soul is a human form or is it… Prabhupada: Yes, human form. God is also human form. “Man is made after the shape of God.” I think there is in the Bible. Is it not? So God is also like human form. Here you see Krsna, two hands, two legs. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [bg. 4.11]. That is Krsna’s all-powerfulness, spiritual life.” [end quote] The fact is that spiritual form is inconceivable to our present senses. In the material world we try to measure things. But to measure anything, there has to be a reference point and our own bodies are the reference we use to understand the rest of the world around us. Thus our sense of existence is limited to the actions and existence of our own bodies. You have given some examples of drinking or jumping in water or sitting on a chair. There is never any separation from Krsna. Krsna continuously dominates the consciousness of every living being and action is the eternal flow of service to Krsna. It never stops yet it takes on unlimited variety of performance. It is inconceiveable, yet a fact. On a morning walk on June 7 1976 in Los Angeles we discussed this with Srila Prabhupada: Ramesvara: In Caitanya-caritamrta you wrote that the kalpa-vrksa trees, they move, they are not stationary. Prabhupada: They are spiritual. Ramesvara: Is this true for the plants and flowers? Prabhupada: Everything. Everything. They are spiritual, absolute. There is no condition. ‘Because it is tree, it cannot move’-that is condition. Ramesvara: No condition. In the spiritual world, can trees and plants communicate? Here they have no means of communication, no talking. Prabhupada: Everything is possible. Ramesvara: The animals can also understand and communicate. Prabhupada: You can milk the cows as many times as you like, and as much as you like. Ramesvara: And talk with them. Prabhupada: Yes. There is no limit. That is spiritual world. Hari-sauri: One thing that has always confused a lot of devotees is how is it possible to eat something in the spiritual world when that, the thing that you’re eating is also spiritual? Prabhupada: There is no need of eating, but if they like, they can eat, enjoy. Ramesvara: The taste, the flavor. Devotee: But what happens to the thing that they’re eating? Prabhupada: (laughs) Then you will see when you go there. Devotees: Jaya Prabhupada! Prabhupada: This is our disease. When we’re talking of spiritual world, we are bringing material thoughts. To bring coal in Sheffield. What is called. Sheffield? There are many coal mines? Hari-sauri: To bring coals to Newcastle. Prabhupada: Yes, like that. Why should you bring your material ideas to the spiritual world? There is no relativity. Everything absolute. Ramesvara: There is no day or night. Everything is self-illuminating. Prabhupada: There is, but there is no need. [end quote] To summarize: In the spiritual world, the force that moves everything is Krsna Himself. There is only the ‘present’. i.e. the ‘presence’ of Krsna. So there is no sense of past and future. Only eternal exchange with Krsna. There is no time in the spiritual world because Krsna Himself is the supreme regulating principle. http://www.lotusimprints.com/new/blog/?p=588

5. You don't have to search for a bonafide Guru if you are truly sincere and honest, he will find you. By Gauragopala dasa Melbourne Australia Srila Prabhupada: “If you are completely sincere and genuine, then you do not have to find Guru, he will find you”. An interesting ISKCON pastime I heard recently in Vrndavana about a hippie in 1966 that used to travel around with Ken Kesey’s psychodelic bus dance group, travelling around America handing out Kool-Aid drinks laced with LSD and performing plays in colourful hippie gear that set a trend among the 60’s youth. Somehow one of Srila Prabhupada’s original Srimad Bhagavatam’s was in a small library section on the Kesey bus in 1965 and read by such future devotee’s like Mohanananda dasa who travelled on that bus as a young boy. Another young hippie on that bus was not satisfied in just reading the amazing book Srimad Bhagavatam; he was determined to find the author of this wonderful Vedic text and was prepared to travel all around India until he found the amazing Sadhu who wrote it, if he has too. When the Bus reached New York, Kesey and the Pranksters visited Leary in Millbrook, NY, at his psychedelic retreat called “The International Federation for Internal Freedom.”, it was founded when Leary was fired from Harvard University for doing research with his students on the hallucinogenic drugs LSD-25 and Psilocybin. This young hippie however, stayed on the bus and kept reading the Srimad Bhagavatam and never did met Leary at that time, actually Leary stayed in his room anyway and Kesy never did met him. Frankly the young hippie did not really care antmore about LSD, he had had enough of LSD and realized THAT God can NEVER be found in a pill and decided to go on a spiritual quest to India in search of the ’swami’ who wrote the Srimad Bhagavatam. He then decided to leave the merry pranksters and begin his journey to India; he bought a ticket and was on his way to the Kennedy Airport. On the way however, he had sometime to spare and went by Tompkins Square Park to see what the ‘acid head hippies’ were up to. As he went by in the taxi he saw this big crowd of hippies dancing, he was curious and told the taxi driver to stop, then went over, investigated, and found an elderly sadu leading the chanting of Hare Krishna. He watched with some curiosity as he danced with the other hippies and wondered if the Sadhu he would eventually find in India, who wrote the Srimad Bhagavatam, would be like this Sadhu. Anyway the kirtan stopped and this Sadu began reading from the same book he was reading on ken Kesey’s Bus. Now this young hippie just was even more determined to seek out the writer of the Srimad Bhagavatam seeing this Sadu also reading it. Eventually the reading stopped and this young hippie went over to the Sadhu and said ‘Sir, I am also reading this book also and I am now just on my way to the airport to fly out to India, I am determined to search all over India for this Sadhu’. The elderly gentlemen Sadhu chuckled to himself and said to the young hippie ‘You do not have to go to India, I am here in New York, I am the translator of this book the beautiful Srimad Bhagavatam” The young hippie was without words, he was ecstatic and had tears in his eyes and fell at his feet. Then Srila Prabhupada, the elderly sadu said to the young hippie “Just see, if you are completely sincere and genuine then you do not have to find Guru, he will find you” Hare Krishna All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Srila Prabhupada explains that all of us are all looking for a way to establish our original eternal relationship with Krishna as follows - “Established means re-establish. It (our perpetual ’svarupa’) is already established. We have got different types of relationship. That is called svarupa-siddhi. When you are perfect in spiritual life, you will understand automatically. Nitya-siddha krishna-bhakti. When one becomes perfectly spiritually realised, then he understands what is his relationship is. This relationship is eternal”. December 7, 1974, Bombay) Your fallen servant Gauragopala dasa
6. Radha Govinda maharaj is still in ICU but slowly improving. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> You can contact Maharaja’s personal servants Natavar Bapu das at ++91-09319922387 or Mahaprasada das at ++91-09837389354 to know of Maharaja’s health condition. H.H.Radha Govinda Maharaj’s health official update by HH Radharaman Maharaj: On January 8th, Maharaj was traveling from Vrindavana to Jalandhar for a Bhagavat Katha program in Ludhiana. From the Jalandhar train station, he went to one devotee’s house and then to the local ISKCON temple. When Maharaj got out of the car, he felt numbness in his left leg but he somehow managed to take darshan of the deities. After taking darshan, Maharaj returned to the devotee’s home, took prasad and went to take rest. He was taking rest for approximately twenty to thirty minutes when a devotee heard Maharaj making some noise. Upon entering the room, the devotees found that Maharaj had collapsed (this was around 12 PM). The devotees immediately rushed Maharaj to Jalandhar hospital where the doctor diagnosed that Maharaj had had a brain hemorrhage. As a result of the brain hemorrhage, the left side of his body was paralyzed and his speech became slurred. The doctors treated Maharaj according to the hospital’s capacity before deciding to transfer Maharaj to Apollo hospital in New Delhi, the best hospital in the area. Maharaj reached Apollo hospital on January 10th at approximately 12 PM. Maharaj is currently being treated in the ICU at Apollo hospital. Maharaj is still in critical condition therefore the doctors have requested that no one come to visit Maharaj. As of now, visitors would not be beneficial for his recovery. The doctors diagnosed that the paralysis on the left side of the body was caused by the brain hemorrhage. On a positive note, the hemorrhage did not occur in a central part of the brain, therefore Maharaj did not lose consciousness and he can recognize people. High blood pressure caused the brain hemorrhage. Doctors are currently trying to lower and stabilize Maharaj’s blood pressure; it is still high. At this point we humbly request that no one come to the hospital to see Maharaj. We also humbly request that everyone continue kirtan and prayers for Maharaj’s recovery, this is very important. We will continue to give updates as much as possible. Hare Krishna. By Vraja Bhakti Vilas DasOn 8th of January H.H.Radha-Govinda Maharaja reached Jalander (Punjab. INDIA) his Katha was scheduled at Ludhiyana, but before reaching there, he went to see devotees at Jalander. He reached their at 8:30am, their while he was receiving at temple he slightly fell on the ground, he & devotee thought that due to journey & tiredness it may be happened, then at 10am he took prasadm & then he went take little rest, while sleeping once again he fell down & he went on little unconsciousness, so devotees took him to the hospital, their he was found it was a slight bleeding in the brine & left side of the body was paralyzed, so after the treatment he was started responding & the bleeding was stopped doctor announced that he is out of danger. Maharaja was kept in the same hospital 2 days, on 9th he took little prasadm two times, evening he started chanting on his beads, the voice is not clear yet, also left hand & left legs is not working properly. Now this morning 10th jan at 1pm he was brought to New Delhi where he is now admitted in Appolo Hospital, after few testing doctors said that he is recoverable provided he needs good medical treatments & important is resting which his body’s demand. From Tusti Mohan Krsna Das Today, 10th of January 2009, as I was going to the Bhaktivedanta hospital in Bombay with HH Gopal Krsna Goswami, leaving JUHU temple at 6:20 pm. On the way, after driving to Mira Road, I asked Maharaja about HH Radha Govinda Swami’s condition and how dangerous it was. His reply was, “don’t worry his case is much less dangerous than that of HH JPS, then after few minutes HH GKG called his disciple doctor HG Dwarkadish prabhu who works at the Apollo hospital where Radha Govinda Maharaja was shifted to in New Delhi. Dwarkadish prabhu who is taking care as per his guru’s request informed that HH RGS is much better as he had only a minor stroke with bleeding in a non sensitive area and that he is conscious now. He still has partial paralysis on his left side but that in very few weeks he may be discharged by Krsna’s mercy. HH Gopal Krsna Goswami asked Dwarkadish prabhu if Radha Govinda Swami can talk on the phone and the surprise was that yes he can speak little bit and we could hear Maharaja talking to him which gave us the needed relief, as we all are still very shocked with the heavy and dangerous stroke that happened with our Gurumaharaja HH Jayapataka Swami, and that now is happening in a smaller level to this great vaishnava and first class exponent of the Srimad Bhagavatam as His Holiness is known in ISKCON. It is amazing to see how in this very short period of time many great servants of Srila Prabhupada are getting sick, since now adays we need them more then ever to always lead our society and increase the preaching of lord Caitanya’s instructions and mission. We pray for the recovery of HH Radha Govinda Swami maharaja and may Krsna have him again with us preaching in the best way as he does. 11 Jan: Maharaja is still in ICU. 7. 8. From HH Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaja: Yesterday late morning, I came to Bombay, and went to see Jayapataka Maharaja in the afternoon. Bhakti Purushottama Maharaja, Braja Hari prabhu and Sunil Madhav from Chicago, came along with me. While driving to the hospital, I was feeling quite depressed. Just to think of the person who used to be so full of strength and vitality lying on bed in this condition is naturally painful. I was remembering those early days in Mayapur - going to swim in the Ganges with him. With steady, powerful strokes he used to casually swim across that river. So many incidences flashed across my mind - once Radha Jivan lost his breath in the middle of the river and panicked and started to cry out for help, and Jayapataka Maharaja came to his rescue and carried him to the shore. Guru Kripa, (at that time a Swami), used to come to Mayapur with his tough group of devotees, called the Nama Hatta, from Japan. Often we used to sport on the bank of the Ganges. One day I was forced to wrestle with one tough American devotee who defeated me and it was seen as a defeat of Mayapur. Jayapataka Maharaja could not tolerate that. He just stood up and challenged anyone from that group to fight with him. A devotee who was equal to his size accepted his challenge and they started to fight. After a little struggle, Maharaja pin him to the ground and started to slam him again and again on the mud. We all, Mayapur devotees, felt that this was our victory in response to my embarrassing defeat. Once we got a false alarm that the Muslims attacked our Goshala and we all ran towards the Goshala with sticks and spears to protect our cows and on the head of our group was Jayapataka Maharaja. Once someone brought a crossbow from America and we used to practice occasionally with that. Jayapataka Maharaja would always hit the bull's eye without fail. He disclosed that he used to be a champion shooter in his early days. When we arrived in the hospital, we were informed that Maharaja was still taking rest. So we decided to go to the ISKCON temple in Mira Road and have darshan of Sri Sri Radha Giridhari and Jagannatha-Baladeva-Subhadra. When we came back, Maharaja was awake and greeted us with a happy smile. There was a big difference between my last visit to him and this one. Although he lost a lot of weight he seemed to be doing extremely well. He was obviously happy to see us. With a big smile he started to speak, "Bhakti Charu Maharaja ordered me to stay. How could I disobey his order? Therefore, I am still here." Everyone began to laugh. I corrected him, "No, I did not order you to stay but I begged you to stay. The devotees were praying for you all over the world. Thank you very much for listening to our appeals." He folded his hands and said, "The devotees are very kind. They are very merciful. I will do whatever Krishna wants." I told him that I heard that the day before he went to Sri Sri Radha Giridhari temple and led a kirtan. He said, "Yes. For about five minutes I led the kirtan." Then he started to sing, "jaya Jagannatha, jaya Jagannath…." In order to show us how he led the kirtan. I told him that in a few days he would also be dancing while leading the kirtan. He laughed loudly and said, "Let us see what Krishna wants." Just by being with him, the sadness that was prevailing in my heart disappeared and the whole mood became very jovial. I told him, "Let us go for a walk", and he told me that he started to walk holding on to the parallel bars. One of the devotees who were taking care of him told me that he was almost running this morning. He mentioned how these physiotherapists are really making him work hard. They ask him to stand up and sit down or walk. But then he admitted that their treatment was very good and it is working. One therapist is teaching him how to close his eyes and move his eyebrows. Then he mentioned that even such simple things became so difficult to do at times, as if he is learning everything from the beginning. I reassured him that the way his condition is improving, very soon he will become alright again. He is having difficulties to move his right hand and right leg. The devotees helped him to sit on a chair and he seemed a lot more expressive and joyful being in that position. He remembered that when he was in the Hinduja hospital, I was singing some bhajan and he thanked me for that. I was surprised that he could remember that because we were under the impression that he was completely unconscious at that time. I told him that his consciousness seems to be so clear and his memory so vivid. He agreed that with his mind he doesn't have any difficulty. He has difficulty only with his body. I felt very confident that his body would also become alright within a short time. I remembered Badrinarayan Prabhu's comment, "It seems that Jayapataka Maharaja is an irresistible force of nature that can never be stopped." I remembered those Kshatriya warriors of the Vedic times who would be injured almost to the point of death, but then in a flash, they would recover from that injury and start to fight again as if nothing happened to them. He mentioned that Sivarama Maharaja phoned him yesterday and how much he enjoyed talking to him. He feels very happy when senior devotees phone him or visit him. Gopala Krishna Maharaja called and he told him that we were there with him and what a wonderful time he was having with us. A little after that, Guru Prasad Maharaja called from Mexico and Maharaja told him the same thing. I told him that he should get well quick and go to Mayapur. All these years he had been traveling around the world. Now he should just stay in Mayapur and let the devotees from around the world come and see him. This is how due to so many devotees involvement Mayapur is going to develop. He accepted that proposal. One of his disciples who is taking care of him jokingly mentioned that he has a ticket from Bombay to Kolkata, which will expire if he did not use it within a certain time. We all started to laugh and Maharaja also started to laugh. We expressed our concern that he would have difficulty going to him room on the roof of the Lotus Building. Bhakti Purushottama Maharaja suggested that he could stay on the ground floor of the Conch Building. I reminded him that if he had to stay in the Conch Building, then did not have to stay in the ground floor. He could rather stay in my room because there he could go by the elevator. Maharaja jokingly reminded us that still he will have to climb half the flight of stairs because the lifts there do not go to the landing of the floors. We assured him that we could carry him in a palanquin. He accepted that idea. Many devotees were waiting outside for Maharaja's darshan. Therefore, after spending about two hours with him, we left. Bhakti Raghava Maharaja, who had been suspected to have a contagious disease called Chicken Guinea, was also in the Bhaktivedanta hospital, in a room opposite to Maharaja's. So, we went to see him. Maharaja was sitting on a chair in front of his deities, chanting. When I tried to embrace him, Maharaja tried to resist because of his infection. But I insisted, saying, "I touch you to get purified myself." Maharaja looked very embarrassed and kept on saying, "please, please." I met him after many, many years. We remembered the early days in Mayapur. We used to be so close and rendered so many services together. His condition is much better now. In a couple of days he will be discharged from the hospital. He has many preaching projects developing in different parts of India, and he told us how he was going to spend time in different places and eventually come to Mayapur for the GBC meeting.

14. By Hridayananda dasa Goswami <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> Dear Devotees, All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I am writing to explain my recent visit to Badger, California to meet with His Holiness Narayana Maharaja. As some of you know, in the last few years, I have made some efforts to improve our relationship with various leaders of the different Gaudiya matha organizations. My motive has been to promote peace and cooperation, since it seems clear to me that better relations among Vaishnavas are in everyone's interest. When I was Srila Prabhupada's secretary in Mayapura, in 1976, I saw that Srila Prabhupada was personally trying to forge such cooperation. Before meeting with Narayana Maharaja, who had previously visited me in Los Angeles, I obtained the authorization of the GBC, and I went as a type of ambassador of Srila Prabhupada. In a spirit of good-will, I attended a kirtan and lecture program led by Narayana Maharaja. Unfortunately, some persons now seek to take advantage of my visit, even to the point of displaying pictures taken on that occasion, to promote the recruiting efforts of some of the followers of Narayana Maharaja. In order to seek a genuine improvement in the relationships between various Gaudiya Vaishnava groups, it is esssential that our meetings, dialogues, and joint kirtans and lectures be conducted in an atmosphere of discretion, free of any attempt to utilize such meetings to recruit the members of one organization on behalf of another. Therefore I am writing to clarify that my purpose in visiting Narayana Maharaja was to act as an authorized ambassador of Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON. As far as my personal spiritual life is concerned, all of my spiritual needs and purposes are wonderfully satisfied at Srila Prabhupada's lotus feet, within Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON. With best wishes, Hridayananda das Goswami

Then there were the oncoming buses and over-laden lorries threatening to smash us head-on as the vehicles on both sides took turns transgressing into the wrong side. I was praying frantically through much of the journey, which was appropriate as I was going there as a “pilgrim” of peace! Mayapur is the spiritual centre of Hare Krishna devotees. It is located just beside the sacred Gangga (Ganges) river in the agricultural heartland away from the hustle and bustle of Kolkatta. The temple complex is walled like a castle, and on the outskirts are numerous stalls, shops, eateries and hotels catering to the pilgrims and tourists alike. Inside is a small town with several temples, halls, restaurants, hostels, apartments and meeting venues. There is a bank, communications and Internet station, travel agency and other services that the thousands living inside and outside may require. There are also schools and several sacred places in the surrounding area. Transport to the neighbouring towns or places of interest is easily available, and one can even cross the Gangga on a boat or ferry across to the small town of Navadip. Although it was approaching winter then, global warming showed its impact this year, as it was unusually warm, being cool only at night. I had gone there expecting the worst, bringing winter gear to protect me from the biting cold, but it turned out that even a T-shirt was sufficient. And although the place was well maintained in terms of cleanliness and food preparation compared to what you may expect of India, the water supply was still suspect. The dry, dusty conditions made it worse. No matter how much precaution we all took, many still ended-up with diarrhoea or fever. Some got really sick. Apart from us, there were hundreds of their devotees from all over the world who were there on their own pilgrimage, while many also came as volunteers for our global assembly. Just like us, they came from all the continents. I was fortunate to have been dinner guests of a Hare Krishna devotee couple from Moldova and Ukraine. There were also many African devotees who were very active in the dancing and singing. Just outside the gates there is a well-planned housing estate where most of the Western devotees stay. Many are permanent residents with their children attending nearby schools, while others divide their time between their homelands and this spiritual home. There was always activity in Mayapur. The singing and dancing in the main temple started at 4.30am. Since my room was just nearby, it served as my wake-up call, since my own prayer time was about that time too. Their devotional chanting, singing and dancing would go on at scheduled times throughout the day, often ending past midnight. Every Saturday night, there was a festival with a parade headed by a decorated elephant, followed by a chariot carrying the deities, and devotees chanting and dancing down the streets within the compound. Thousands of devotees and tourists would throng Mayapur during each festival, more so if there were special events or celebrations. Even though men and women freely mixed, there were strict rules against touching, holding hands, hugging or kissing in public. In fact, at the entrance, there was a sign which says “No playing; no games; no mundane music”. Before we went there, we were already warned about the no-hugging, no-meat, no-smoking and no-caffeine rules, but they actually allowed caffeinated-coffee for the URI group. That was the only compromise. The vegetarian food was always delicious. I had never seen more varieties of fruit and veggie dishes, and enjoyed all of them. Many of us became sluggish in the first few days because we ate too much, trying to savour every dish that was new to us. It was only after cutting down the portions and avoiding the sugary desserts that I felt energetic again, and managed to lose the weight gained previously. Our food was lovingly cooked and served by volunteers from all over the world, so the spread was also international. After almost two weeks of being a strict vegan (the food also excluded onions, garlic or leek as these can arouse the libido and hamper the spiritual quest), I hope it will help me drastically cut down on my meat intake for the rest of my life. I have been espousing a low-meat diet and must practise what I preach. The URI plenary sessions were held at a temporary structure erected at the site of the future Sri Mayapur Vedic Temple, which will be the largest Hindu temple in the world. When it is completed, it will bring many thousands more to Mayapur. It will dwarf the current icon, the Samadhi Temple, dedicated to the movement’s founder, His Divine Grace A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Mayapur is the spiritual centre of Hare Krishna devotees. It is located just beside the sacred Ganga (Ganges) river in the agricultural heartland away from the hustle and bustle of Kolkatta. Mayapur is the spiritual centre of Hare Krishna devotees. It is located just beside the sacred Gangga (Ganges) river in the agricultural heartland away from the hustle and bustle of Kolkatta. Unity of religions URI, which was established in 2000, is the fastest growing global interfaith movement. It is grassroots-based, being composed of over 400 interfaith groups (called “Cooperation Circles” or CC) spread all over the world. Each group is made up of people of diverse religions, faiths or spiritual traditions doing any activity that promotes enduring interfaith cooperation and helps end religiously-motivated violence. Activities may include interfaith dialogues, sports, mountain-climbing, dance, music, art or anything you can think of. Together, over one million people are directly or indirectly involved in our activities. So you can imagine how fun and activity-filled it was when 300 of us gathered for the Global Assembly at Mayapur. Our theme was “Pilgrims of Peace - Many Paths, One Purpose”. There were songs, dances and story-telling from the Sufis, Native Americans, indigenous South Americans and others, interspersed with prayers, plays and performances from every region of the world. Our hosts further enriched our experience with their continuous chanting, dancing, processions and prayers. Of course there were the serious meetings too, but we always had sing-and-dance interludes whenever the meetings got too long or too boring. And probably for the first time, the Jewish Sabbath, Christian Mass, and Muslim azan (the call to prayer) and Friday Prayer were held in Mayapur. The prayers of all the other religions were also heard as our programme was full of such prayer occasions. We have proven that the people of all faiths can unite for peace, and have fun together, while keeping true to their respective beliefs. If you would like to be part of this global family, do write to me. If you already have a group of friends from different religions doing any activity that promote harmonious living among yourselves, I encourage you to form a CC. If you already have a society or organisation that promotes peace among religions, then you should get it registered as a CC too. A charter for unity, peace and prosperity As we celebrate the New Year, I would like to invite you to join me in this declaration: “We, the people of all races and religions of Malaysia, unite to promote a safe, harmonious and prosperous society, to end racial and religious conflicts, and to work for peace, justice and equity in our beloved country.” I hope this declaration will be a starting point for those of us who love this country. I hope we can then work together towards a Charter for unity, peace and prosperity that will help us achieve that elusive dream - a united Malaysia where every citizen feels equally at home, has equal opportunities, and be equally proud of being a Malaysian. My duty is not just to help heal those who are physically sick or spiritually weak, but also to help heal the rift that has surreptitiously crept in between the people of different races and religions here since our fathers and mothers proudly and sincerely held their hands together and cried “Merdeka” over 50 years ago. Now we, their children, are not so united any more, and it’s anybody’s guess what is simmering below the calm surface of “official unity” as displayed through open houses and other programmes. I hope many of you will join hands with me to achieve this dream. May God answer our prayers, bless this country, and bless us all. Salam, Peace. Dr. Amir Farid Isahak is a medical specialist who practises holistic, aesthetic and anti-ageing medicine. 16. Here's an exchange that took place in Los Angeles on January 8, 1968, after Srila Prabhupada's lecture on Caitanya Caritamrta: Guest: I have a question. I was wondering why Krsna is always portrayed as being blue. Prabhupada: Why the sky is blue? Can you explain? Guest: Because the sky is blue? Prabhupada: Yes, why the sky is blue? First of all, you try to explain this. This you are seeing every day. Can you explain? You don't? You cannot? Sky is blue! That's all! Therefore it is blue. Krsa is blue! Therefore He's blue. Guest: But His consort, His consort is not blue. Prabhupada: Sky is the reflection of Krsna's bodily effulgence; therefore it is blue. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> 3.4.7. 17. January 11 - Report from Ratnavali dd:Narayani Mataji, Guru Maharaja's godsister had come to see Guru Maharaja before her departing from Mumbai. She teaches Bhaktivaibhava andBhaktivedanta courses in VIHE. She came here to Mira Road for her health check up and as well as for giving seminars at Sri Sri Radha Giridhari temple. Last week when she arrived to Mumbai she had brought Mahagarlands from Sri Sri Radha Syamasundara, Radhakunda water etc and offered them to Guru Maharaja. Today she sang eight very beautiful verses called Kevalastakam, glorifying the Holy Names for the pleasure of Guru Maharaja. Guru Maharaja liked them very much and he asked for a copy of those verses. Guru Maharaja invited her to come to Mayapur for Bhisma pancaka, the last five days of Kartik month and to give seminar in Mayapur. Here are the eight verses that she sung for Guru Maharaja: LYRICS: (1) madhuram madhurebhyo 'pi mangalebhyo 'pi mangalam pavanam pavanebhyo 'pi harer namaiva kevalam (2) abrahma-stamba-paryantam sarvam maya-mayam jagat satyam satyam puna satyam harer namaiva kevalam (3) sa guru sa pita capi sa mata bandhavo 'pi sa siksayec cet sada smartum harer namaiva kevalam (4) nihsvase nahi visvasa kada ruddho bhavisyati kirtaniya mato balyad harer namaiva kevalam (5) hari sada vaset tatra yatra bhagavata jana gayanti bhakti-bhavena harer namaiva kevalam (6) aho duhkham maha-duhkham duhkhad duhkhataram yata kacartham vismrtam ratna- harer namaiva kevalam (7) diyatam diyatam karno niyatam niyatam vaca giyatam giyatam nityam harer namaiva kevalam (8) trni-krtya jagat sarvam rajate sakalopari cid-ananda-mayam suddham harer-namaiva kevalam TRANSLATION 1) More sweet than all other sweet things; more auspicious than all other auspicious things; the greatest purifier of all purifying things-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 2) The entire universe, from exalted Brahma down to the lowly clump of grass, is a product of the illusory energy of the supreme Lord. The only thing that is reality, reality, again I say reality-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 3) That person is a true preceptor, or a true father, a true mother, and a true friend also only if they teach one to always remember-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 4) There is no certainty when the last breath will come and put an abrupt halt to all one's material plans; therefore it is wise to always practice chanting from very childhood-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 5) Lord Hari eternally dwells in that place where truly exalted, spiritually advanced souls sing in the mood of pure devotion-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 6) Aho! What a sorrow, what a great sorrow! More painful than any other misery in the world! Mistaking it as a mere piece of glass, the people have forgotten this jewel-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 7) It should be heard again and again with one's ears; It should be uttered over and over with one's voice; It should be perpetually sung and sung anew-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything. 8) It makes the entire universe seem insignificant as a blade of grass; it splendorously reigns supreme over all; it is full of eternally conscious divine ecstasy; it is supremely pure-The holy name of Sri Hari alone is everything.

22. Recognising strokes and taking early action different strokes for different folks 18 December 2008 From Hari Sauri prabhu December 17 2008 Here’s an interesting (to put it mildly) follow up on my posting about recognising strokes and taking early action. This one is from Sriman Jayatirtha Caran prabhu (JTC) in NZ. He’s an expert purohit (priest) and runs the website http://www.salagram.net/Sri-Shaligram-Tirtha.htm This is JTC conducting the pujas for the opening of the new Sri Sri Radha Giridhari temple, Bhakti Bhavan, in Auckland January 2004. As you can see, he’s a man of substance: From JTC: pamho., agtsp., agtsg&g., Thought you might like this after reading your thing on strokes, and yeah I did all those tests that you said. About ago (Friday)(three weeks now) I was doing the Salagram puja and pondered over how it would be nice if we could relieve Jayapataka swami of his stroke effects and restore him to good health much the same way as Vasudev Datta took the suffering of the people, obviouly a nice sentiment but way too much for an aspiring devotee like me rather than Vasudev Datta. That day I had a cardiologist appointment at Tauranga hospital, and he was really pleased at my progress since the heart attack in March. The ECG was good, blood pressure was 136 over 85, kidney function was good, they did a diabetes check at the hospital also it was 7.9 which they said was good too. Now they are booking an appointment in a TIA clinic and CT scan later in the week to see if there is some blockage in the neck arteries which they say they may be able to fix in that be the case. Meantime I’d still been drinking Fenugreek tea morning noon and night hoping it will help clean the cobwebs out…… Then on the Monday I was out in the Lord’s garden trimming the edges with the whipper snipper and my wife called me and I went to answer and the words were muddled in my head to reply, and I struggled like anything to finally slur the words out, and she noticed a full right side facial droop. We called an ambulance and off I went to hospital where I was admitted for tests. It was only a mild stroke and everything returned to normal (almost - face was a bit numb and droopy) I had all sorts of tests; brain scans CT scans, ECG and ultra sound. They couldn’t do an MRI as the contrast affects kidney function and as I have a blocked kidney artery and as such am running on one kidney it was best not to. Anyway…..feeling somewhat purified and relieved of some parabdha karmas I’ve just got out of hospital where I’ve been for nearly two weeks. I have just undergone an experience of a lifetime; an operation on my Carotid (carota) arteries to remove a 76% occulation (blockage). After about 25 T.I.A’s (Transient Ischaemic Attack) in a short space of time, it was deemed necessary that I undergo the surgical operation ASAP. Most of the TIA strokes affected my right side so as there’s a cross over it meant the left side of the brain was being affected so that’s the side they focused on, by now I had facial droops on both sides of the face and most of the face was either paralysed or numb, and my right eye had difficulty opening. As well as that my right arm was heavy and weak, and the fingers of my left hand were numb and cold. My surgeon; Mr Mark Morgan, specialises in operating with patients who are under local anaesthetics – Yes. It means I was awake the whole time while they cut my throat and cleaned out the Carota artery in my neck. Which was a 5 hour operation. Believe me.I’ve seen some horror movies, but this was the best one to date, and hey I was in the leading role. The operation was scheduled for 07:30 am and then 09:30am, but at the last minute – another two operations were done. I took it that Krsna had a plan. Actually, it helped me just that little more to accept that I was going to be fully awake and conscious while someone was cutting my throat and operating on me and to mentally prepare for it by reading Bhagavad Gita and reflecting on the nature of the body and the nature of the soul. I was invited to sign the consent forms agreeing to allow the operation to go ahead and that I understood by doing so I accepted that there were going to be risks of stroke, deformity, heart attack or even death during the Op. Having done all that and surrendering my self into Krsna’s hands, they took me into the operating theatre and “prepared” me (which too a little over half an hour); then the fun began. On the consent form it said I could withdraw at any time but realistically if I didn’t have the operation it was just a matter of time until a massive stroke arrived, as the TIA’s were considered “Crescendo TIA” meaning leading to the big one and they gave me a 60% chance of this happening within the month, the risk factor for me for the op’ they said was about 3 – 4%, so really there was no choice. I was put on an IV drip, and an Arterial drip (which hurts like they were drilling for oil) in each arm, blood pressure monitors and ECG pads stuck on my chest, and then a series of needles injected all around my throat and neck, and one HORRENDOUS injection where the anaesthetist said “Close yours eyes and open your mouth, you won’t want to see what I have to do now” and proceeded to force a monster needle into my mouth (with the help of two others holding my head in place). I lost count after 30 injections despite remaining awake to answer their questions; to count from 1 – 10 backwards and forwards and even in Hindi to keep me cognizant and to test my speech for possible impairment or the tongue becoming deformed, or arms and legs not working etc. They asked about my priesthood, and about Krsna Consciousness, hahaha they ended up with my life story; my favourite uncle telling me tales of India as a small boy, my both grandfathers in the British Raj, my grandmother’s house in the East End of London with all the Indian artefacts, my love for my uncles stories and how it lead me to run of to India at 16-17 years old to the surprise of my parents, my searching for happiness as a hippy and eventual finding Krishna consciousness, how by the Lord’s mercy I met my wife and how we moved to India and Australia and eventually New Zealand and some of our services done there, articles and books I’ve written, web-sites created, we talked of so many things – For them it may have been routine as part of the procedure to see how my body was reacting, but for me it gave me the opportunity to preach KC for 4½ hours, while they operated on my arteries and neck with the clacking of metal instruments, electric buzzing saws, the call for “local” when they hit a sore spot…. A few times toward the end I was getting tired and drifted off with all the medications being pumped into my body, but as they wanted me awake and aware, they constantly helped me through. A very interesting experience believe me, and a good lesson in detachment from the body and dependency upon the Lord and His Holy name which when I wasn’t preaching was whispered under my breath constantly. In The operating theatre, I said to Mr Mark Morgan “I’m accepting your skill as God given and that in that way you and your team are representing and acting as instruments of the Lord for me” He said “I’m humbled, Thank You for that, and I will do my best.” The whole team knew that I was a Devotee and were very respectful and courteous toward me. Afterward a couple of the team came to see me in ICU one in particular said it was the most interesting operation he’d encountered. I am convinced that Krishna will look after each and every one of them and further engage him in His loving service. As we chatted and with my neck wide open, I thought to ask if someone could take a couple of pictures (I hope to get them soon from them). The team were so accommodating. I expected them to take photos with a cell phone, as I suggested, but one of the theatre staff ran off and got a digital camera. Apparently the operation went well. They showed me three pieces of rubber like cholesterol/plaque – each an inch long and ¼ inch thick that were responsible for blocking my carotid artery – the ripened fruit of years and years of ghee and oil, curd steaks and all of rich fatty food stuffs. From the theatre, I was taken to “recovery” before being taken to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) where I spent the night under the watchful care of some of the most amazing and caring nurses I’ve ever encountered. Actually all the doctors and nurses looked after me with great care and respect. I’m still recovering as the wound heals leaving a five inch scar from ear to throat much like Jayapataka maharaj’s one from the knife attack. I’m expecting to have the staples taken out on Friday if all is well with the healing progress which it seems to be. I hope its not taken as my imitating him, but still isn’t that a form of flattery too hahaha My wife has been doing the puja up until today, as I’m more or less strong enough to continue again, taking it easy….. 23. It is stated in the Skanda Purana 4.95.37 it is stated that if one breaks Ekadasi one can fall from Vaikuntha. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Krsna Janma Khanda, Ch. 111, Verse 4, and 5, Radha is speaking to Mother Yasoda: Of the five types of knowledge, what shall I say to you? I speak the best of all devotional knowledge please listen. Oh good lady do not become fearless by the advantage of Sri Krsna, an imperfect yogi (bad ascetic) can also possibly fall from Goloka. Also, in Krsna JanmaKhanda, Ch. 126, Verse 59, Sri Radha is speaking to Sri Krsna: Oh Lord, after reaching extreme height, one certainly falls. The violence of the Vaishnavas results in misfortune. In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse 59, Yamaraja is speaking to Savitri (Mother of the Vedas) Whoever in the month of Kaartika offers a lamp of ghee to Hari enjoys in Vaikuntha (Hari Mandira) for as many years equivalent to the number of seconds (palas-a pala is 24 seconds) for which the lamp is burnt. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse 60 - Born again, he certainly attains Vishnubhakti. He becomes immensely rich, endowed with clear vision and glory. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse 74 - He, who performs the vrata of Krsna Janmastami, is relieved of the sins of hundreds of births. There is no doubt about it. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse81- Whoever celebrates Rama Navami in Bharat enjoys in Vaikuntha for seven Manvantaras. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse82 - He then takes birth again and obtains devotion to Rama for certain; he then becomes the best of those who control their senses and a great follower of dharma. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse90 - 94 He who makes a Rasamandala on the full moon of Kartika, and makes forms of a hundred Gopas, a hundred Gopis, and worships Krsna along with Radha in a stone form and worshiping Him with a sixteen items, will live in Goloka for the life span of Brahma. Returning to Bharata, he will certainly attain bhakti to the Lord and His mantras. Quitting his body and returning to Goloka, he attains the form of Hari and becomes one of His attendants free from birth and death. He never falls again. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse95 - Whoever observes Ekadasi in either phase of the moon enjoys in Vaikuntha for the life span of Brahma. Prakriti Khanda, Ch.27, verse96 Coming back to Bharata, he will certainly attain bhakti to the Lord. He will again go to Vaikuntha and not fall, meaning he/she goes back to his/hers original (meaning the form they were created within the ‘eternal present as, which is paradoxically beginningless and endless) position in Vaikuntha and never falls again- na tasya patanam bhavet). Prakriti Khanda, Ch. 26, verse109 - He, who recites the name of Vishnu or gives it to someone in Bharat, enjoys in Vaikuntha (Vishnuloka) for as many Yugas as names he has recited. Prakriti Khanda, Ch. 26, verse109 – 110 - Tatah punarihaagatya Vishnubhaktim labhed dhruvam Yadi Naaraayanaksetre phalam kotigunam labhet Tatah - thereafter; punar-iha-agatya - again here having come; Vishnubhaktim - devotion to Vishnu; labhet -will attain, get; dhruvam - certainly, surely; yadi-if; Narayana-ksetre -in Narayana region; phalam -merit; results; kotigunam -ten million times; labhet - will attain Returning to Earth he attains bhakti to Vishnu for certain. If the jiva does this in a place of Narayana, he obtains ten million times the merit (result). The Sanskrit words that are used in these verses of Brahma Vaivarta Purana makes it very clear what is being said about the Jivas actually falling from Vaikuntha, Goloka and then taking birth on Earth. Finally, they return to Goloka or Vaikuntha leaving Earth behind. Select verses are given again and again so the reader can get a bird’s eye view of the repetitive phrases that drives the points home so clearly. Krsna Janma Khanda, ch.111, verse 5, the word patanam meaning fall, or falldown is used. The question may be asked who falls down? The kuyogi, imperfect yogi, the bad ascetic, the one who has left devotional service. And who are they? They are the jivas who misuse their freewill. That is why the word sambhavet is used. It means liable or possible however, some jivas don’t misuse their freewill. Those who choose to misuse their freewill fall to the material world and they are therefore imperfect because they gave up their perfect position as nitya-siddha. Bhaktivinoda Thakura describes in Jaiva Dharma in Nitya Dharma, part 5 – “The imprisonment of the jiva began when the jiva forgot his position as the eternal servant of Sri Krsna. This forgetfulness is the original offence of the jiva and is the root of all the jiva’s subsequent offences.” In Srimad Bhagavatam, purport of 3.26.7Srila Prabhupada states - Srila Prabhupada – “Whatever the material energy dictates, the conditioned soul does. He has no responsibility. He is simply the witness of the actions, he is forced to act that way due to his offence in his eternal relationship with Krsna.” And what is that original offence? The answer is giving up the Lord’s service. In Srimad Bhagavatam, 5.14.1, Prabhupada states in the purport - Srila Prabhupada – “When the pure soul wants to give up the Lord’s service to enjoy the material world, Krsna certainly gives him a chance to enter the material world.” In Tokyo on April 20, 1972 Prabhupada stated – Srila Prabhupada – “He has fallen means he has given up the service of Krsna.” Giving up the service to Sri Krsna is due to freewill which leads to more forgetfulness due to the choices one makes due to that free will. There are other aspects of freewill, but giving up service means giving up our love to Krsna, or we want to serve in another way that is not compatible in the spiritual world. When the jivas misuse freewill in Goloka, Vaikuntha it is not like a case of newly transformed envious jivas hanging around. They are instantly covered and ousted from the Lord’s realm. Bhaktisiddhanta Thakura’s purport to text 44 of Brahma Samhita states – “When he forgets his service of Krsna he is at once deflected by the attracting power of Maya in this world.” On a morning walk in Vrndavana, 9-13-75 Prabhupada said: “He has given you little freedom’ you can use it. Yathecchasi tathaa kuru, Krsna says in Gita (18.63), ‘Whatever you like you do.” Some devotees seem to think that this discussion of the “Fall, no fall of the Jiva” started after Prabhupada’s disappearance but that is not a fact. In the early 1972, Madhudvisa had to deal with the issue in Australia while travelling around preaching on a Double Decker travelling Temple that I was also personally on and the Crow and Tal Fruit Logic letter is a result of that exchange with devotees who thought we came from the Brahmajyoti. The letter has typed parts, Prabhupada also added his own handwritten notes, and he signed the letter by hand. Madhudvisa has the letter. In the early 1970’s, Siddhasvarupananda Swamiwas preaching that the jivas came from the Brahmajyoti and Srila Prabhupada told him not to preach that nonsense in his temples. In a letter to Caturbhuja Dasa, L.A., 5-9-73, Prabhupada wrote him - Srila Prabhupada – “Your last question ‘How is the soul degraded (by lust, anger and greed) when it is transcendental to the body? Srila Prabhupada – “Doesn’t that imply that the soul has changed? ‘No. The soul never changes, but due to his tinyness, he may become forgetful of his relationship with Krsna”. Srila Prabhupada – “The spiritual quality of the spiritual spark has not changed but he has forgotten his spiritual nature, bewildered by the imperfect desire to become equal or greater than Krsna.” Most of the verses from Brahma Vaivarta Purana are showing how a jiva can go to Vaikuntha or Goloka but unless one’s devotion is FULLY developed he will fall back to this material world due to lack of chit (knowledge) strength. Nevertheless, eventually he/she will return and stay permanently in Vaikuntha/Goloka, regaining his/hers authentic svarupa bodily identity that is actually permanently there in Goloka even if one forgets this fact. Such comments seem inconceivable, but are they? Actually they are easily understood when one ‘realizes, by dent of bhakti, what the eternal present actually means’. In other words, our perpetual body is permanently locked, protected, and secured in the eternal presentbecause there is no portal of past or future for it to ever leave. Therefore if there id fall down, it is only consciously via ones thoughts, imaginings and dreams, never as ones original body. Now that wasn’t too difficult to understand was it? Those verses in shastra that state that one does not fall from Vaikuntha are referring either to jivas who fell originally and are now reinstated, and generally won’t fall again or to those jivas who never fell to begin with. Bhaktisiddhanta Thakur clarifies the point in Sri Caitanya’s Teachings, p. 101 “The position of the jiva IS a part of the tatastha-sakti that can enjoy, cease to enjoy, and go back to his original position”. And Srila Prabhupada says in a similar vein on a morning walk: Paramahamsa - So we can come to the spiritual world and return? Prabhupada - Yes. Paramahamsa - Falldown? Prabhupada - Yes…. He goes out of his free will; again comes out, again goes. Like that. (Cheviot Hills Golf Course-5-13-73, L.A.) Srila Prabhupada stressed the verse: Mahaajano yena gatah sa panthaa - one must follow in the footsteps of the Mahajanas Mahabhaarata, Vana Parva, 313.117. And who is speaking these verses from Brahma Vaivarta Purana? They happen to be Mahajanas. Narayana Rsi is talking to Narada Rsi about what Yamaraj spoke to Savitri (Mother of the vedas). Brahma also joins in later. So, their statements carry weight. So, for our Brahma-Vadi friends (no fall avadis or sleep avadis) what will they do now? Maybe demonise these verses as Apa siddhantic or of the Kuyogi Sampradaya? Or belittle the slokas as simply words to encourage the pious to do Punyas? Or try to emphasize that these verses are fanciful imagination? Then better yet they may try to minimize these verses as secondary evidence or not authentic or as interpolations? Any way you want to cut it, there is disagreement on this point and the Patanam Slokas, will stand their ground, and support Srila Prabhupada that jivas can fall (patanam) from Vaikuntha/Goloka. So how can apparently contradictory statements be reconciled? Jiva Goswami explains in his Krsna Sandarbha 152.9that Vedanta Sutra states – “If there are two contradictory statements in scripture, the first statement should be interpreted so that it does not contradict the later statement.” So the way to employ this understanding of Jiva Goswami means that for us, the Fallvadis (as the Brahmavadis call us) we accept both ideas i.e. coming from Brahman and coming from Vaikuntha/Goloka. The jivas coming from Brahman are those jivas who did not get liberated in Brahma’s lifetime and entered the body of Maha-Vishnu. So, when they reappear when Maha-Vishnu begins to expand universes again that occurrence is an origin because it is over a time period of trillions and trillions of years, which is like eternity. That origin is what the Upanishads describe. We accept the understanding that the jivas that have left their service in Vaikuntha/Goloka, due to free will, come here to the material world. In all of this discussion one important point to understand is that to Krsna, in Krsna’s transcendental time, or reckoning, we are here in this material world for one or two seconds (NOT EVEN THAT BECAUSE NOTHING IS SEEN AS MISSING WITHIN THE ‘ETERNAL PRESENT)’. How is this? Krsna does not force you to love Him. You have to desire it willingly and that is the topmost use of freewill, this is what freewill means, to voluntarily serve Krsna. The living entity is given that ‘choice’ because without it, there is no meaning to individuality or being a marginal living being. The other angle is that by misusing our freewill we make the wrong decision and Maya immediately covers us AFTER the living entity chooses to manufacture their existence without Krishna. Freewill is perfect and imperfect and yes it is an inconceivable truth (Acintya Tattva) It is perfect in the aspect of allowing one to freely choose to endlessly increasingly serve and it is imperfect and not suitable for Goloka when we choose to ignore Krsna. This is one reason why the Lord creates the Mahat-tattva (material creation) The perfect aspect of this imperfection of the jiva is that you can go back to serve Krsna again. Srimad Bhagavatam 6.11.25 confirms this - “Oh my Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, will I again be able to be a servant of Your eternal servants who find shelter at Your lotus feet? Oh Lord of my life, may I again become their servant so that my mind may always engage in the loving service of Your Lordship.” Twice Srila Prabhupada uses the word bhuyah (again), stressing the point.
24. What a wonderful story Jan-09, Report from Ratnavali dd<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> During the week Guru Maharaja’s schedule is very tight doing three kinds of therapies. Weekly once on Sunday is a holiday for the physiotherapists and it is a break day for Guru Maharaja. As today is Sunday the plan was to take Guru Maharaja to Hanuman Tekri temple and Braja Hari prabhu also suggested Guru Maharaja to be taken to the beach which is very close by. It was scheduled to leave at 10am. Guru Maharaja had his shower, breakfast and facial theraphy. Nimai Gaura prabhu and his wife, the disciples of our Guru Maharaja from Juhu temple had prepared some South Indian breakfast and brought it for Guru Maharaja. Just before the facial theraphy began, Guru Maharaja’s main doctor Shyamalal prabhu came to see him. He was enquiring about Guru Maharaja’s sleep the previous night. Guru Maharaja said he had a dream. The dacoits where using the newly built lift in Mayapur and had come up to the rooftop. Guru Maharaja used his gun for his protection. Shyamalal prabhu recollected Bhakti Caru Maharaja’s report wherein Maharaja had described his courageousness to fight the dacoits in Mayapur. Guru Maharaja wanted to know whatelse Maharaja had written in his report. So we were narrating the various memories quoted by Maharaja. One of the incidents was about the wrestling match, wherein Bhakti Caru Maharaja got defeated and Guru Maharaja rescued by defeating the tough Japanese devotee wrestlers in the sport bringing victory to Mayapur. Guru Maharaja started making the jesters with his hand like wrestling. Again when the incident was narrated how Guru Maharaja used to save the devotees from drowning into Ganga, Guru Maharaja expressed he doesn’t know if he will be able to do all these things again. Shyamalal prabhu immediately replied to Guru Maharaja saying with Krsna’s mercy he would regain all his strength and vigor. By the time everything finished it was 12.30 noon. Guru Maharaja was taken in a wheel chair and then he was to be transferred into the car. To transfer Guru Maharaja into the car from the wheel chair is a big task. It has to be carefully done. Usually there are 4 devotees to place him into the car. One to hold the legs, one to hold his body, one to see Guru Maharaja doesn’t get his head hurt and the other inside the car to make Guru Maharaja sit inside the car. Previously Guru Maharaja didn’t have absolutely any balance to stand but some improvement is found today. Guru Maharaja seemed to have little bit strength to stand with the support of the devotees. This whole scene of making Guru Maharaja to sit inside the vehicle reminds me of carrying the Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra Deities into the car for the Ratha Yatra parade and one has to carefully take the Deities step by step into the vehicle.Continue Reading »
