Welcome Kath! So glad to have you here with us on VGF. There are

Hi Tracey,

 

Welcome. I'm from Australia too - the outskirts of Melbourne. My son

has the same allergies. You'll find some great info here and

thousands of wonderful recipes. I'm currently adding metric

conversions to all the recipes in our files and adding the

Australian names to things as well, so they'll be easier for all us

Aussies to use.

addictive. Caffeine withdrawal can occur from just missing

the " morning cup of coffee " , or in your case the chocolate. The

first symptom of caffeine withdrawal is headaches.

suggest some fresh mangoes, they're now in season; watermelon is

I am also enjoying the ebooks from thegardendiet.com website.

recommend a fruit based, esp. including a " sweet " fruit or two as a

base, and then adding others as needed. I personally favor bananas,

and my other " staple " is dates. see the file section here for sources

for fresh dates...I use the Date People - they do a good job, and

dates are just about to come back into season next month. then I may

add in some seasonal fruits/vegys. For instance, this time of year, I

rotate in melons (cantelope, watermelon, etc.), some peaches, etc.

Then for my evening meal, I'll eat lettuce (I prefer primarily loose

leaf red, maybe some romaine, some iceberg...)with tomatoes, cukes,

celery, and them maybe a little

of other fresh vegys; I use very little of these. And, then to your

question about nuts/seeds, etc. Yes, they may not be " optimal " , and

I use them sparingly - in the neighborhood of 1/4 - 1/2 cup of nuts

per *week*, or maybe 1/2 an avocado per week. Much of these will

really skew the diet toward high fat in a hurry.

 

I personally aim to keep my calonutrient ratios

(Carbohydrates/Protein/Fat) in roughly the 80/10/10 range, meaning a

mimimum of 80% my calories from Carbohydratges, almost exclusively

fruits, and then a maximum of 10% of each of Protein and Fat. Most

days it ends up in the 85-90/5-7/5-7 range. When I first switched to

the high water content fruit approach in February of this year, I

found www.nutridiary.com to be helpful in seeing what was what. and I

see that Nora and Robert may have other opinions on this. (see earlier

posts yesterday/today..) I don't check it as often anymore, and when I

do, it's generally in those ranges. When I went totally raw last

September, I was waaaayyyy too high in fat %, like 45+%! (it was

nuts/seeds, or nut/seed milk, with a little avocado, etc...! it

really adds up quickly.) When I checked it, I was shocked. The

nutridiary helped me to understand where I was, and get better

balance.

I see this as more of an " evolving " question; best is closest to

nature, which would be mono. That may not be where you want to start,

however; or it may be. That's a personal choice. (from where you

are, I think a grand step forward would be to lose the lacto and ovo

part of the diet.) Nora's food-combinig chart is a good place to

start: you want to minimize the work the body has to do to

digest/absorb/assimilate the food we're taking in; proper

food-combining assists here.

Anne Wigmore's The Hippocrates Diet is good, as is Paul Bragg's The

Toxicless Diet. He's phenominal.

May I also add that it's best to read several books on the topic,

and go with what feels right. For every author you read on raw food,

there is another who outrightly conflicts them. I respect the two

authors I mentioned, but they condradict each other on certain

things. For every 10 things Raw food authors mention, 9 things they

will agree on and one they won't. This is where you step in. You

decide what is best for you.

I have done things recommended that didn't agree with me, or were

too difficult to follow and other things that just clicked for me.

You always have the final say, no matter how dire the author may

sound if you don't do as they say.

Hi Samantha,

 

I, too, work in and A/D Rehab and I soooo know what you mean about meat. If

it isn't on the menu the clients tend to get very irate. " Real men eat meat

at every meal. " NOT!!

When transitioning to raw food, I have noticed I feel hungry all the time. What

can I do to decrease my appetite. Also, I would like to get rid of my cravings

for cooked food and sweets.

Hi Stacey,

if by hungry you are talking about that rumbly burning loud sound your stomach

makes then it helped me when I read this. " True hunger is a pleasant feeling in

the back of your mouth and throat "

WOW. I can't remember where I read it-maybe on a raw retreat site>??

If my tummy does a growl I just say to myself - " oh digestion sounds not hunger "

and concentrate on how I feel. I have also found that there is a big difference

between 'hungry' and sated. It is hard to overeat on a raw diet and I was

totally used to overeating 'empty food' so volume was what I went for. Now it's

quality....

IF you are craving a sweet I suggest nibble a date or two. I just discovered

these and man they do the trick. Really hard to eat too many- I like that.

Stacy,

Are you getting enough protein and fat in your diet? Are you balancing

your meals/snacks to contain carbs/fats/proteins each time you eat?

This helped me. Eating even small amounts of sweets tends to perpetuate

the cycle of craving sweets. I found that by cutting out all sweets and

high glycemic fruits and veggies I did not crave sweets.

wow Debbie, you're not far from me! I'm in Ann Arbor, a stone's throw from

UM hospital. On Pontiac Trail. We should do lunch sometime. Have you been to

Hi Debbie:

Welcome to the group. I know you're going to love it here. I see we are

both engaged in the endeavor of " animal rescue. " I have tree dogs...a mini

schnauzer, a long haired chihuahua and a white poodle...all rescued. They are

my

dearest friends. They all have physical disablilities...like me. We are

inseparable, we are together all the time.

Oh, I'm with you Amy. I can hardly wait. My watermelon pink magnolia tree

is full of buds and they are starting to open. Whew! That's always the sign

that winter is over. I love gardening and I'd love to be able to work at a

nursery.
