What is the minimum I need to know to follow along here?

Hi. I am new to studying Hinduism, even after having picked up a few yoga books and books on meditation over the years. Most of the Sanskrit terms seemed to go over my head, because I wasn't really sure where to begin. This forum seems like a nice place to come to learn more, but a lot of the discussions seem to be very technical to me and it is hard to know where to begin. Could you please help me to sort out what I need to know as a minimum to be able to fully appreciate what I am reading?

God is the first person, with his own eternal and transcendental name, fame, form, personality, paraphernalia, entourage and pastime.

God's body is the absolute form of 'Sat-Chit-Ananda'—Eternity. Cognizance, and Bliss

The Vedas say that all ‘Actions’ are always affected by one of the “three modes” vying for, and achieving dominance over the other two ‘modes’ during their innate interplay with all material elements and in all stratums of material affairs.

Hi. I am new to studying Hinduism, even after having picked up a few yoga books and books on meditation over the years. Most of the Sanskrit terms seemed to go over my head, because I wasn't really sure where to begin. This forum seems like a nice place to come to learn more, but a lot of the discussions seem to be very technical to me and it is hard to know where to begin. Could you please help me to sort out what I need to know as a minimum to be able to fully appreciate what I am reading?

 

And it gets more confusing when we start to realize that these sanskrit terms are understood in different ways by different schools of philosophy so one yoga book will use a term to mean one thing and another the same term to mean something else.

 

Sanskrit terms get used way too much for me. I largely ignore them and concentrate on the english meaning. People tell me some Sanskrit terms don't have good english equivilants but what can I do?

 

Hinduism is such a big tent with so many philosophers and religious idea's being housed under that word that in my opinion it has become virtually meaningless.

 

Srila Prabhupada has translated so much into English that we needn't understand sanskrit. Although there is much Sanskrit terminology in his writings that some of it will stick just by repetition all we really need to do is understand the english.

 

Patience. It is a frustration everyone experiences especially in the beginning.

My answer is this. The only thing that you really need is to understand that the material body, which includes the mental processes, is not the self. We are spirit, not matter. This is absolutely the minimum criteria for studying the Bhagavad Gita. With this goes the idea that there is a Supreme Being, one who is there for us at all times, to guide us on our spiritual path. The process of mantra meditation, the chanting of hare krsna, hare krsna, krsna krsna, hare hare. Hare rama, hare rama, rama rama, hare hare is the method of preparing ourselves for the study of Bhagavad Gita. We accept krsna as supreme, and we understand that we have no supremacy whatsoever.

 

By chanting hare krsna, and simply reading bhagavad gita (As It Is, the complete vaisnava study by ILA AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada), in conjunction of understanding that we are spirit, not matter, this gives us the complete prerequisite for delving into this science in the company of our peers, which means those less advanced, those more advanced, and those who are on our own level.

 

Srila Parbhupada tells us this is a gradual process, and we understand from realized experiance that advancement in this science, both the theory and the practical application of the science is not only possible, but guaranteed, if we merely stay the course.

Why are you studying Hinduism? To learn more about God? or To learn more about religion/culture? or both?

 

If you are studying to learn more about God, then read Bhagavad Gita "As It Is" by His Holiness A.C. Bhaktivendanta Swami (Srila Prabhupada).

 

This is the place he recommended anyone to start.

 

If you have a christian background, you should re-read the gospels concurrent with your study. This will provide you new insight into New Testament and should awaken your devotion further.

Ask a lot of questions. Have no fear of looking stupid.

 

One of the reasons I became so disillusioned and bitter in college was that almost all of my classmates (in the engineering school, at least) seemed deathly afraid of looking stupid. Rather than asking questions to help them understand the topics under discussion, they seemed preoccupied with how to solve the exercises, know what was going to be on the test, and get good grades. It seemed clear that, while they could recite facts from memory, they had little understanding of the underlying priciples.

 

Playing the fool can be the best way to learn.

Yes, but His Servant makes the valid point that the scriptures of Lord Jesus Christ take on entirely massive potency with bhagavad Gita used as the clarifier. A christian once asked Srila Prabhupada if he had to give up his faith to become krsna conscious, and His response was that he is not about changing religions, rather enhancing them, fulfilling them.

It has only been a few hours and already I am very much impressed by how many answers I have been given. :) It gives me a good idea of where to begin, to be able to participate more fully here.

 

IMO, Christianity has got to be one of the weirdest religions I have ever learned anything about. My parents tried to raise me Catholic, but it didn't take. When first I read about Buddhism in general and the 4 Noble Truths in particular, it felt like I had finally come home. Full enlightenment has been my goal ever since then. The thing is, though, that I began to suspect that it was necessary to look outside of Buddhism to accomplish this. Sure, Buddha is great, but you should see some of the people who call themselves Buddhist.

The minimum thing that you need to know to participate in this site is nothing. Yes, that is true. Even if you have zero knowledge of Hinduism, you can post here. Go through the posts. If there is anything, which you find difficult to understand, then just ask. Even if your questions are very basis for some other members here, then also do not hesitate in asking.

OK, I have a beginner's question myself.

 

I have been regularly going to an ISKCON temple for a while now, and have been reading the Bhagavad-Gita (As It Is, since I got it from their shop). I've also gotten free literature from them which I have scanned.

 

Still, however, my head is left quite fuzzy on some of the basic ideas that they seem to want to get across.

 

I understand that "Krsna Consciousness" is to think of Krsna all the time and do things only in His honor.

 

Still, I am confused...why is it "Krsna" consciousness in particularly? Why is it not Siva consciousness or Mahadevi consciousness etc.? This is, as far as I can tell, the main goal of many religions...to constantly live and work in the honor of their idea of God. Why Krsna in particularly?

 

I need a direct and well-defined answer. I understand that ISKCON is of the belief that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but not a single person or bit of literature has actually explained to me why. It is always stated as if it is a given.

 

I ask this question with no bitterness and with no intent to offend anyone. I just want to know.

Firstly Lord Krsna is not someone's "Idea"

 

Secondly The Srimad Bhagavad Gita was sung by Lord Krsna and in the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krsna states in Chapter 18 text 65:

 

manmana bhava mat-bhakto

mat-yaji mam namaskuru

mam evaisyasi satyam te

pratijane priyo'si me

manmana - Thinking of me; bhava - just become mat-bhakto - My devotee; mat-yaji - My Worshiper; mam - unto; namaskuru - offer obeisance; mam - unto Me; eva - certainly; esyasi - come; satyam - truly; te - to me; pratijane - I promise; prijah - dear; asi - you are; me - My;

 

As You can see from the above verse Lord Krsna is saying unto "Me" so therefore "ME" does not referr to any other personalities. So we have to be concious of Krsna.

 

It does not matter if you belong to any kind of sampradaya (movement) the above verse and all verses in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita is coming unchanged through centuries. The purports in the Bhagavad Gita is the realizations of the spiritual master.

 

So therefore those following Srimad Bhagavad Gita Clings to every verse which slowly directs one towards the Lord who is singing the verse.

 

But please do not get me wrong if you have a great attraction to Lord Siva then that is also very very good study and become seriously Siva Conciouss so that he may help you answer your questions for Lord Siva is no ordinary personality. It is through the mercy and permission of Lord Siva that we can approach the most confidential knowladge.

 

If You are truly sincere than seek The Lord Out with all your hart and you will find your answers.

You have almost answered it for yourself. A Saivite like Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami would probably say call it Siva consciousness if you like. Some Christians might say Christ consciousness.

 

Some people get caught up in names and words, but the important thing is that one must live life in devotion to the Supreme Lord.
