Nerve Gas used in Northern Iraq on Kurds Press release, April 29, 1993 For the first time ever, scientists have been able to prove the use of chemical weapons through the analysis of environmental residues taken years after such an attack occurred. In a development that could have far-reaching consequences for the enforcement of the chemical weapons treaty, soil samples taken from bomb craters near a Kurdish village in northern Iraq by a team of forensic scientists have been found to contain trace evidence of nerve gas. The samples were collected on June 10, 1992 by a forensic team assembled by the Boston-based Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and the New York-based Middle East Watch (MEW), a division of Human Rights Watch (HRW). The samples were forwarded to the Chemical & Biological Defence Establishment (CBDE) of Great Britain's Ministry of Defence at Porton Down which analyzed them. Eyewitnesses have said that Iraqi warplanes dropped three clusters each of four bombs on the village of Birjinni on August 25, 1988. Observers recall seeing a plume of black, then yellowish smoke, followed by a not-unpleasant odor similar to fertilizer, and also a smell like rotten garlic. Shortly afterwards, villagers began to have trouble breathing, their eyes watered, their skin blistered, and many vomited--some of whom died. All of these symptoms are consistent with a poison gas attack. Bath guided money to Houston from Saudi investors who wanted to influence U.S. policy under the Reagan and Bush administrations, sources close to the investigations say. FinCEN, a division of the U.S. Department of Treasury, investigates money laundering. Special agents and analysts from various law enforcement agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Customs Service, are assigned to work with the FinCEN staff. "In sworn depositions, Bath said he represented four prominent Saudis as a trustee [one of whom was Saudi Sheik Salem M. Binladen] and that he would use his name on their investments. In return, he said, he would receive a 5 percent interest in their deals. Tax documents and personal financial records show that Bath personally had a 5 percent interest in Arbusto '79 Ltd., and Arbusto '80 Ltd., limited partnerships controlled by George W. It not only denies the women's equal right to their inheritance (Q. 4:11-12), it also regards them as imbeciles and decrees that their witness is not admissible in the court (Q. 2:282). From Ananova News: Scientist says he can create meat without killing animals A Dutch scientist says he can create artificial meat in laboratories without killing animals. Wiete Westerhof, from the University of Amsterdam, plans to use the same method used to produce artificial skin. He believes he will be able to grow lumps of meat weighing up to 50kg in large containers. The meat would be produced using collagen particles and muscle cells taken from "animal donors" who would not be harmed. The muscle cells would then grow and multiply on the collagen. Mr Westerhof anticipates containers able to hold more than 5,000 litres, in which the meat would grow in a nutrient solution. This liquid would contain 62 ingredients, including 20 amino acids, 12 vitamins and various enzymes. "The product will have the structure and taste of lean meat, but animals won't have to suffer for it," said Mr Westerhof. The dermatologist says pork, beef and chicken meat could all be produced artificially as well as kangaroo, whale and shellfish. Mr Westerhof and two businessmen own the worldwide patent to the method and are looking for investors. Niaz Naik, a former Pakistani Foreign Secretary, was told by senior American officials in mid-July that military action against Afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of October. Russian troops were on standby Mr Naik said US officials told him of the plan at a UN-sponsored international contact group on Afghanistan which took place in Berlin. Mr Naik told the BBC that at the meeting the US representatives told him that unless Bin Laden was handed over swiftly America would take military action to kill or capture both Bin Laden and the Taleban leader, Mullah Omar. The wider objective, according to Mr Naik, would be to topple the Taleban regime and install a transitional government of moderate Afghans in its place - possibly under the leadership of the former Afghan King Zahir Shah. Mr Naik was told that Washington would launch its operation from bases in Tajikistan, where American advisers were already in place. Bin Laden would have been "killed or captured" He was told that Uzbekistan would also participate in the operation and that 17,000 Russian troops were on standby. Mr Naik was told that if the military action went ahead it would take place before the snows started falling in Afghanistan, by the middle of October at the latest. He said that he was in no doubt that after the World Trade Center bombings this pre-existing US plan had been built upon and would be implemented within two or three weeks. "The USA has the right to take revenge, but will this put an end to the problem?" he said on Libyan TV. "America is a superpower that can erase the world in one day. It can hit Afghanistan." But Gadhafi added, "There is nothing in Afghanistan," and if the United States occupies Afghanistan, "it will not be in its interests." But after the attacks last Tuesday, Gadhafi expressed his condemnation of the devastation and support for the American victims. India offers help to US against Osama By Jawed Naqvi NEW DELHI, Sept 14: India on Friday offered all out support to the United States to hunt Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan but hastened to caution its own people against a communal fallout at home from the arriving military campaign. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said in a televised address to the nation that a military solution was needed to root out the scourge of terrorism from the world and offered all support to the United States in this endeavour. However, Vajpayee did not categorically spell out the offer of military bases in India for the US campaign. That offer came in an interview to the Times of India by Minister of External Affairs and Defence Jaswant Singh. "There have been contacts at all political, executive and operational levels about this," Singh said in the interview published on Friday. Asked if this meant India would agree to provide logistical help or a staging ground for a US military operation, Singh replied with an emphatic "Yes", the newspaper said. In a day of rapid developments the US embassy was the centre of hectic activity. US Ambassador Robert Blackwill presented his credentials to President K.R. Narayanan and later called off his proposed visit to Washington. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee officially called off his visit to New York and the external affairs minister aborted his travel to France. Blackwill said he had postponed his trip to Washington to "remain here to work with my Indian colleagues to counter the terrorist scourge". The ambassador said in a brief speech before TV cameras that he was meeting all senior ministers to ascertain the possibilities of cooperating in the evolving alliance against terrorism. He commented obliquely on the recent events in Kashmir in which a little known militant group has threatened to harm women who did not observe the strict rules of Hijab. "The world must not be cowed by terrorists; neither the terrorists who hijack planes filled with innocent people, nor those who threaten to shoot or maim women and girls who do not dress in a particular way. This week has been a rare exception. About four hours after terrorists attacked New York and Washington on Tuesday, President Jiang Zemin sent a message to President George W. Bush expressing sympathy and professing opposition to all forms of terrorism. A day later, in a phone call with Bush, Jiang again offered help for rescue efforts and stronger cooperation against terrorism. Jiang reportedly told Bush that China strongly condemned the attacks, which "not only brought about a disaster to the U.S. people but also a challenge to the world". Where is there any question of not fighting? We have been attacked with much loss of life to innocent citizens. It is the DUTY of the Govt. to protect us.
