Do you eat eggs or dairy? You don' t mention them - but they can make

some fast and easy meals. I like a cheese omelet for " get something on

the table in 15 minutes " meals. (Then I add ww bread and some kind of

salad.)

I'll have to search...

As far as steps, hmmm good question. Breakfast has been set for a long

time, have 3 meals a day with protein, vitamins, potato most days

(sometimes I forget), browns, trying to move sugar with meals but I

seriously hate journaling. So I think that puts me on step 2.

I do eat eggs and dairy. More egg whites than whole eggs and gentle on

the cheese because cholesterol is an issue. Omelet sounds good!

I like to roast parsnips, turnip, and cauliflower and then mash it into the

potatoes, which I have boiled skin on with a celery root.

I forgot sometimes I also roast up some broccoli and puree in my food

processor and add to the potatoes, if your trying to hide the broccoli you can

make

the potatoes pesto potatoes which would make them green and then add the

broccoli.

You might want to check out Tosca Reno's " Eating Clean for Families " book for

" sneaky " ways to get more veggies in things. This is NOT a vegetarian book,

though, so just browse it when you're at the library. Tosca is a big carnivore,

so you'll have to skip a lot of pages. But her non-meat recipes are good, and

there is less meat in that one than the regular " Eat Clean Diet " book.

I want to say " hi " , and support your son, as I, too, was a natural born

vegetarian.

 

My parents would put a lamb chop on a plate and make me sit there til I ate it.

I would watch the full moon rise over the snowy hills in the picture window

until I fell asleep on the soft linen tablecloth at 9 o'clock.

 

I simply would not touch the meat.

 

My parents gave up, and started buying me avocados at aged 10. YAY!!!! I only

ate wheat bread, too. Loved spinach!!! My cousins would beat me up because I

l-o-o-o-o-v-ed cooked carrots.

 

Life is beautiful as a vegetarian.

Welcome to the Garden! Plant yourself on down.That recipe looks good, I'll try

it this week. Pretty soon you'll look back and think, " Hmm, I can't remember the

last time we had meat. " Either that or you'll see how the grocery bill has gone

down and food is tasting a lot better. (Of course now, if you use the fake meat

things from the grocery's frozen foods, the bill won't change much, since they

are not cheap by any means!)

Hi Nicole and welcome to our group! Nice to have another long term vegetarian on

board! Our members range from long timers like yourself to people who have just

converted to people who are not vegetarians but are looking for healthy slimming

meal ideas.

 

I too am working on losing weight this year. Congrats on your -17 pounds so far!

I agree that cutting out processed foods can be very helpful. Must be a little

hard being with someone who can eat whatever they want and never gain a pound!

 

Please share any tried and true slimming recipes or ideas that you come up with

as we all need inspiration at times. We have a lot of good food in our recipe

files so make sure you check out the files section of the group.

(since I was 13), and I was excited to come accross this group. I have been

trying to lose weight for a while now, and have found that there are very few

resources out there that relate to losing weight for vegetarians. My husband and

I are both vegetarian. He's very thin, and I have always struggled with my

weight. I am 17 pounds into my weight loss right now, and I keep adapting what I

am doing every day. I have moved very far forward towards healthy eating, and am

currently trying to cut out all proccessed foods (ie: anything with chemicals or

preservatives) . So far so good. I am finding that it's not that hard to just

make things yourself (like veggie burgers etc.), as I am cutting out all the

fake meat substitutes like Morningstar chik patties, etc...

 

I'd love to hear more about what works for you!

Thanks for the welcome Cindi! It's great to see vegetarians getting together

like this. I will definitely share some recipes, and would love to share weight

loss tips as well. I think that losing weight is a journey and a challenge for

anyone, vegetarian or not. I feel like I am finally getting what works for me

(including enough sleep and enough water). I would be interested in talking

exercise as well because weight loss really can't be successfully achieved

without it. I'd love to hear what others here are doing to aid in weight loss

(counting calories, exercise, filling healthy foods, etc...) and what is working

or not working. As vegetarians I do feel like the challenge seems a little bit

harder, but I don't think it has to be. I have been overweight much of my life.

I've never crossed over to obese, but I have been overweight probably longer

then I was of average weight. Today I am down almost 20 pounds (a half pound

away), and I feel amazing. I

have about 15-20 pounds more to go, and I am still super motivated.

 

As I said, I am trying to cut out processed foods, or at least any with

preservatives, and I am eating almost exclusively organic (except when I go out

to eat). I just made my first batch of homemade veggie burgers. I froze them and

plan on taking them to work with me for my lunches. I tried frying 2 of them

last night for my husband and I, and they fell apart, but tasted great. So I

took the rest of them and baked them. They seemed to work better that way. Once

I take them to work and see if they work out, I'll post the recipe. I used to

eat Boca burgers for lunch, but this is so much healthier! One of these on

Ezekiel sprouted bread with onion and tomato, delicious! I love being in control

of what I am eating...and knowing that I am eating healthy.

 

Like I said, I'd love to hear more about anyone else's weight loss journeys as

well. Thanks again for having me!

Hi Gayle, welcome to the Garden! Have you tried the upside down hanging tomato

things? They look really tempting to me, but the heat we have here would dry the

roots out unless I watered a lot and used the moisture holding potting soil.

Also, have you tried growing potatoes in stacked, used tires? Crazy but it

works. My favorite growing is raised bed gardening, as even when in the

wheelchair I could tend my garden without much trouble.

 

Where you are is hot and dry, sandy soil? Right? UGH. Zone 8 or 9 and probably a

lot closer to 9 than the USDA would say.

 

Anyway, glad you found the group. Veggies are great: both the food and veggie

foodies.

Hi all - new member here. I am a 66- year old grandmother of six, planning

to return to vegetarianism. I live in North Florida, near Jacksonville, on

one acre of land. We have had a fairly successful garden so far this year

and have purchased some chickens, who should be beginning to lay very soon.

So,I am part-way there, but moving slowing as my husband is not convinced

yet.

 

It looks like there are many, many inventive vegetarians here and I am

looking forward to some wonderful recipes and hopefully contributing some

down the road a bit.

I personally love silk they have a Light option for original and vanilla and

they also have flavors like chai and chocolate and eggnog in the holiday season,

but there are many different types including milk replacers which don't need to

be refrigerated (can be helpful to someone who doesn't have a bunch of fridge

space left) Rice milk is much sweeter if that's what you're looking for but I'm

not really sure which of these has the lowest fat :-/ hope I was somewhat

helpful!

I've tried a bunch and prefer the rice milks. The ones with 2g fat or

less per serving taste best to me. Usually I buy whatever's on sale.

Some of the ones with less fat are marked " lite. "

well...there are a wide variety of brands of "milks" out there. hard to choose which is better, as tastes differ from person to person, plus certain products are btter for certain items.

case in point, never bake a cake with hemp milk! its delicious but it makes the cake eating expereince akin to eating wet cement.

there are a ton of nut milks (which can be really good plain or with cereal), and all the grain milks...rice, oat, triticale, etc

i would just experiment and see what you like! try out a few brands, try them with different things.

for me, i don't go for a whole lot of the milks anymore, tho the partner gets a carton of every week of organic almond milk generally.

hello,I just joined your group! My name is Christine and I live in Alaska with my husband and two teenage sons. I have been a vegetarian off and on since I was 18 and recently chose to try Vegan. My family is not vegetarian but they put up with me and my cooking! I do not have a love of cooking, so I am always looking for simple recipes.It can be a challenge, especially in the winters to find fresh produce up here, but I try to always have fresh fruits and vegies in the house.I have my first question, what is the best milk replacement? There seems to be so many rice, soy, oat and almond milks. I am trying to find one with the lowest fat content.Thanks for letting me join and look forward to getting to know you.christine

I personally love silk they have a Light option for original and vanilla and they also have flavors like chai and chocolate and eggnog in the holiday season, but there are many different types including milk replacers which don't need to be refrigerated (can be helpful to someone who doesn't have a bunch of fridge space left) Rice milk is much sweeter if that's what you're looking for but I'm not really sure which of these has the lowest fat :-/ hope I was somewhat helpful! , "damselfly40" <damselfly wrote:>> hello,> I just joined your group!
