I personally love silk they have a Light option for original and vanilla and they also have flavors like chai and chocolate and eggnog in the holiday season, but there are many different types including milk replacers which don't need to be refrigerated (can be helpful to someone who doesn't have a bunch of fridge space left) Rice milk is much sweeter if that's what you're looking for but I'm not really sure which of these has the lowest fat :-/ hope I was somewhat helpful!@gro ups.com, "damselfly40" <damselfly@. ..> wrote:>> hello,> I just joined your group! dean just bought out Alpro for you UK/European folks..provamel and alpro soy products are now owned by one of the largest dairy producers/conglomerators in the world...

Silk makes some of the best-tasting soymilk and soy yogurt here, and White Wave makes prepared soy products (marinated tofu, soy yogurt, tempeh, etc.). They started out as separate independent companies afaik. Sigh. I'll have to do some research.

Aren't any (soy) food companies nonconglomerated?

And am I going to have to make my own soy yogurt from non-GMO soybeans I grow myself?

Thanks. I think I have heard of White Wave. Most of our soy milk and quite a lot of the tofu is non-gm here, thankfully.

Most of the soy products here are made from organically grown

soybeans, which cannot (if they're telling the truth) be gm. I assume

the EU/UK have even more stringent regs on gm? So to avoid gm soy, buy

organic.

actually, silk just came out with a nice new line up, which they label "natural"

nice happy sounding word...

it doesn't mean diddily squat.

it looks EXACTLY like the organic packaging, just re-branded as "natural".

so, your soymilk from china and brazil can be chock full of gm and pesticides and herbicides and what every else they decide to toss in

better living thru chemistrt

sorry, but Dean foods is one of my demons

i've resisted a long rant here on dean...

but, as for soy products not made by some big corp.

locally here in the bay area there's Hodo and the Quong Hop Co, which makes the Soy Deli line of Tofu. both are organic.

used to find Small Planet tofu around here, they are from Washington i believe. they made amazing tofu, but haven't seen it in a long time. Rainbow in SF was the last place i saw carrying it.

And am I going to have to make my own soy yogurt from non-GMO soybeans I grow myself?

ask and you shall recieve

there are several, but, here's a good one

http://www.cornucopia.org/

http://www.cornucopia.org/who-owns-organic/

of course, its almost impossible to keep up with...(like morningstar, which used to be kellogg, and is now Dean)

as for soy yoghurt...sorry, no easy/quick answers from me. i don't eat it, so never really paid much attention

I could live without tofu, but what about soy yogurt? And soy/rice/coco ice cream? Have they been bought out as well? Is there some watchdog organization that lists who owns which formerly organic vegan food company?

Though I have tried Hodo tofu and it's wonderful, not a word I thought could apply to tofu.

Hi Yarrow

Unfortnuately we have silly organic rules in the UK... soy milk can not be classed as organis if it is fortified with any vitamins... therefore soy milk with B12 added can not be labelled as organic, even if all the ingredients are organic! Upshot is, we have to choose between organic and fortified...

Most of the soy products here are made from organically grown soybeans, which cannot (if they're telling the truth) be gm. I assume the EU/UK have even more stringent regs on gm? So to avoid gm soy, buy organic.

Oh dear. Does that mean they will start putting gm soya in it,I wonder! I don't know if there is any other make to get - I haven't seen Plamil for quite a while, and I guess Tesco etc. all come from the same supplier.#

Hi, Patricia. That's my name, too! Though I shorten it to Trish.

I'm a also a longtime vegetarian, and I transitioned into a vegan in the

past few months. I've probably run into some of the same difficulties.

Mainly, I had problems with dairy.

Milk and ice cream was easy to give up. Soy and nut milks are tasty, and

soy ice cream is marvelous. Yogurt took a little longer because I had to

acquire a taste for soy yogurt, but it was also not much of a problem. I

found cheezy vegan sauces were just fine, and could make a decent mac

and cheese or drizzle something over nachos without much fuss. The

biggest stumbling block for me was solid cheese. Well, vegan parmesan

substitutes are good. But cheddars and jacks and such, not so much.

I haven't found a good vegan substitute for solid cheeses. (There are

rumors now about a good tapioca-based product, but it's not widely

available yet.) In the meantime, I just changed the focus of my diet to

get around the cheese issue. For instance, I make tacos and taco salads

without cheese and use avocados instead. Feta, gorgonzola and blue

cheeses I just do without.

That can be challenging. I just had to keep remembering why becoming

vegan was important to get past that. For me, it's an environmental

issue. Animal agriculture is terrible for putting CO2 into the atmosphere.

Why don't you share some of the problems you're encountering? There are

many different perspectives on this list that you might find helpful.

Cheers,

Trish

Hi Shelley and Welcome-Don't worry, you will learn from experience. And the

folks on this forum have some wonderful recipes to share. When you are using

tofu, just remember that it really takes on the flavors of whatever spices or

seasonings that you are using with it. By itself, it is a little bland. My

family still will not let me live down the tofu cheesecake I made for a

Thanksgiving feast. You will even have fun becoming a Veggie.:o) Good luck.

Hello there, Kate,

I'm in Chester, UK and have been a veggie for about 40 years and vegan for 35.

My kids are veggie and so is my grandson but then he's only 9 months old.

Not much into recipes as I'm a stick in the mud and tend to stick to a tried

dozen or so meals I enjoy.

Hi, Michael!Let me say that I'm probably the one on this list who UNDERSTANDS. My wealthy family growing up REQUIRED the eating of big, juicy steaks and burgers on a daily basis. To this day, the primitive/early childhood part of my brain equates the smell of juicy steaks cooking with childhood and happier times. This still throws me for a loop from time to time. I realized while traveling this Vegan journey that if I wanted to STAY Vegan, deciding to forego any animal products was only the first step. Educating myself about the evil that is meat/poultry/pork/dairy farming-with all of its nasty issues- was the required 2nd step. Don't get me wrong-I still backslide, but I view it much like an addiction that I need to work my way out of. Hello Everyone!

I have recently joined your ranks as a vegan and the primary reason that I want to join this email group is so I can find out from you more about how I can really enjoy being vegan and therefore stay that way!

Some challenges I foresee:

My wife and daughter both eat meat and so I'm gonna be seeing meat around me and perhaps some days even thinking it looks tasty. While I see merit in the idea of getting them to also go vegan, for now, at least, I'll respect their wishes and be the only vegan in the house. How can I get to a place where I feel perfectly satisfied eating the vegan portions of our meals while they're chowing down on chicken tenders?

I have made intentional changes to my diet in the past, and some of the changes have not lasted. In 2002, I was living vegan, but then I moved to a country without central heating and I met my wife. The prospect of meat warming me combined with the fact that my wife was a meat-eater got me eating meat again about a year and a half later. How can I now stay vegan? How can I make it so this is not another thing I'm "trying out", but instead something I'll really follow through with?

Non-vegan food is convenient here in TX. It's prepared and tasty and available in a minute for a couple of bucks. How can I make a vegan lifestyle a natural and convenient one?

One idea I have is to join some local vegan clubs. I think that a sense of community with people I have things in common with will really help me own the identity. I'd be really appreciative of any other ideas.

Thanks so much! Michael
