Guest guest
Pat, Thanks, for your encouraging response. I agree that moderation is the key. I was very confused about soy, especially since I OD'd on soy last week....soy shakes, soy potato soup, etc... As for dairy being " unhealthy, " -- yes, I was referring to the antibiotics and hormones fed to (or injected into) dairy cattle. I read somewhere (who knows if the stats are right) that 90 percent of America's dairy products are from factory farmed cattle that are fed hormones and antibiotics. If this is true, then we can't be sure that our milk, cheese, butter, ice cream and yogurt is " safe. I'll tell you what makes sense to me, Rose: just eat a varied diet of whole natural foods. I eat soy regularly, probably about 3-4 times/week in one form or another. Incidentally, it's said that soyfoods ease menopause and I did in fact have a spectacularly easy menopause. I just simply stopped having periods with NO symptoms of any kind whatsoever. I even to the doctor to ask about it as I was worried this was abnormal. He laughed...and said that this was how it's *supposed* to be but rarely is. That's one instance: one data point. There's no proof that the two (eating soyfoods and easy menopause) are connected, AFAIK. > >As for dairy being " unhealthy, " -- yes, I was referring to the >antibiotics and hormones fed to (or injected into) dairy cattle. This is doing better for my health than - what - 95% of Americans...probably some figure like that. So I don't worry about the rest, on the theory that I try not to worry about things I can't do anything about. We grow lots of veggies in summer, I try to buy locally (but there's not much opportunity to do so). We simply can't afford to buy only organic foods, so I don't worry about it. Guest guest
I can help you out with going vegan if you want. I like raw foods, but they aren't always peachy-keen for my stomach cos I have colitis and IBS, but my fave veggie is broccoli =0) Good luck and congrats on going vegan! I bet you'll notice any colds/respiratory problems you may have go away, because mine sure did! Liz Elizabeth Pagos <ellehollinger wrote:Dear Vegetarians... Thank you for the invitation to your group! My name is Elizabeth and I'm an 19-year-old college student in New England. I went vegetarian over night about a year ago and I soon decided to transition to veganism. I'm currently working on becoming a vegan raw foodist (you can tell I am quite the purist!), but this is the hardest transition so far! Has anyone else toyed with raw foodism? Anyway, I enjoy most things I try, especially outdoor activities. My favorite book is The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and my favorite films are Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Lord of the Rings films. I'm studying art history in college, and I liked to become a Waldorf school teacher one day. I look forward to our discussions. Guest guest
Agreed! The first time I tried it I nearly gagged. A few years later, a better cook than I was showed me that when prepared differently, it can be quite good. So I wouldn't give up yet, try a few other ways of preparing it before x-ing it off for good. Guest guest
Hi Mint Faery, I think you have made a brilliant decision in returning to a cruelty free lifestyle and I hope you are feeling really good about yourself! If you don't mind me asking, why did you switch to veggie and why back to vegan? I think what you did yesterday is a wonderful gift to all animals and the environment and it's also very strong of you to put your habits aside for their well being. Guest guest
welcome laura! i too am fairly new to the veggie thing...well, i've never really eaten much meat, but giving up dairy is my new thing. i also live with a " meat and potatoes " hubby who sometimes thinks i'm out of my mind with what i eat. but, i think that he is closer to being a veggie than he thinks...for example, last night, we had veggie wraps for dinner and when he finished his, he said, " mmm, delicious! " he will eat anything that i put in front of him and i very rarely cook meat for him. he never complains. but, i've got an 11 month old daughter that i'm hoping to raise veggie and i worry that i will have conflict with hubby about that. i guess we'll see. just keep experimenting with different things. that's what i do. in fact, if your kids like mac and cheese, let me know because i've got good recipe for that using tofu and soy cheese. i even got my hubby to eat it. blessings to you all, erin progressive7862 <allens717 Tuesday, April 22, 2003 6:09 AM New member Hi everyone! I'm new here, also to being a vegetarian. Been thinking about it for several years, finally did it for the new year. My family has not joined me yet, I'm hoping to get some ideas on how to help them make the move. I live with a husband, 2 small children (4 and 6) and a mother-in-law. All are very fond of their meat and milk. Finding recipes that the kids like is quite a challenge. So far, they only like bean burrito type things. I often feel like an alien in my own home, so it will be a real pleasure to get to know some like-minded people! Peace, Laura
