hi anouk,

i'm in southern indiana in the woods.

it's warm and sunny here

like a spring day.

i've even seen a few moths, and

my baby mimosa tree is starting to sprout.

I love winter.

looking and hoping for snow

but nothing yet.

very bizarre weather.

if we don't get at least a few days' worth of

near-zero temps, the ticks and fleas will take over

next summer.

t and I are going to a couple of jams on NYE.

we play in a band and most of our friends are musicians--lots of fun.

One is even a vegan!

On NYD, we're going to hang out with the dawgs, drink wine, and maybe

go mud skiing if it rains.

Are you doing anything special?

I know what you mean about the winter blues. I used to live in Anchorage,

Alaska, where there is about one hour of daylight during the winter. Alaska

is such a gorgeously beautiful place, but you can't see it for half the

year!

I miss the changing seasons and the snow. But now that I'm a grown up I

don't think I could handle having to get up early in the morning to shovel

my car out from under the snow before going to work.

I like to stay home for new year's and avoid the partying people on the

road. It's my birthday as well. It's a good day to spend with the people

(and dogs) I love the most before they all fly off out of the nest.

The Gilman, hehe. What kind of music do you like, fraggle? Did you ever go

to the Pound in San Francisco? My son used to sing in a hardcore band and

going to his shows got me hooked on it. I hadn't been to any shows in a

long while, since before I broke my ankle, but a couple of weeks ago my

daughter's friend was playing at Rooster's Roadhouse in Alameda and I took

her out there. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it!

HiAnouk

It is dark here at that time too. I think getting the winter blues depends

on whether or not you like winter though. I prefer lighter evenings, but

winter has its own charms. We haven't had snow either - I don't think we

will get any this year.

Complain about the Pound? Do you mean because there were virtually no seats,

and it was in the boonies and had no outdoor lighting to help you find your

car afterwards? Or was it something deeper?

My son used to play there fairly often, so that's why I started going there.

Mongolian throat singers ... that could probably describe their style.

Have you ever seen Chiodos? Without know what you like, of course, I'd

recommend it if you ever get the chance. (No, that's for certain not my

son's band. He left the old one and is just getting situated in a new one

that isn't playing yet, but if they ever do I'll let you know! He's a

nah...seats have nuthin to do with it

wouldn't know what to do with myself if i was suppose to sit down at a show!

heh

1. yes, pound was in the *ss end of nowhere, and impossible to get to

2. it was a metal club (sorry jo and peter!), and it had that attitude..not my

style

3. it cost too much for shows

4. their beer lines were invariably dirty

5. while it was ok that it was basically the size and shape of a supermarket, it

still doesn't excuse them for having the sound remind one of being in a tin can

in a closet...

6. they were, to put it bluntly, extreme *ssh*les...

case in point

i roaded for a friend's band there one night

4 bands played

each band got a drink ticket

not one ticket per member...but one drink ticket....

at the end of the night, about 200 people had paid ot get in..not a huge show

for the pound, but not bad either...

and, one band got paid $60

one got $10

the other two got nuthin

the show was $10 to get in.....

i heard that story repeated, ad naseum...

er the time some good friend's played there..at the last minute..they were

begged t oplay, as everything else had fallen through for the club...

they were promised " a little bit of money, and two cases of beer "

ok..so, it was last minute..everything thrown together

understandble

they show up..headline....

and, get a 6 pack of beer.....

hey..good job..here's yer 6 of pabst....

they were just a horrible club..they treated bands (and guests) like crap....

not a good way to run a business...

*shrug*

Well, my son's band didn't get paid. They were in the battle of the bands

series there. Started in the summer, ran through November, lots of bands

competing over a number of weeks, and his band actually won. Only thing is

that they never got any of the things that were promised.

Metal, hmm. Robbie's band classified itself as hardcore. I'm not sure what

metal exactly is, not to sound stupid. Do you know Haste the Day, Chiodos,

Still Remains? How about Underoath? The crowds do that two-stepping thing

instead of the thrashing, usually. So who do you like on the local scene?

peace,

sharon

ah...

those are emo/screamo bands (at least a couple of them)

Jo and Peter can give you a more concrete description of metal, but, there are a

million and one genres of that style of rock music ...heavy metal is a varied

rock based musical sound that is generally heavy on the guitars and drums

black metal, 70's traditional metal, death metal, thrash(punk crossover),

grindcore(similar), prog metal, power metal, glam metal, etc and so forth....

me?..local bands...

*deep breathe*

strychnine, everything must go, la plebe, attack disarm takeover, reducers SF,

nuts and bolts, jesus f*cking christ, verbal abuse, strung up, dekoiz, fabulous

disaster, eskapo, double d's, boweltones, phenomanauts, whiskey rebels, western

addiction, instant *sshole, malnourisehed...etc and so forth..local bands around

at the moment...

I guess that the classification ( dont you just love pidgeon holes ) of hardcore would probably mean different things to different people. I would think that bands such as Hatebreed would fit that category, but others might disagree? The Valley Vegan..............Sharon Murch <grace4compassion wrote: Well, my son's band didn't get paid. Well, I think all the music is good ... metal, hardcore, punk. Really, I

have a hard time differentiating the lines between the music genres. I

actually notice more difference in the audiences. I know the bands

classifying themselves as " hardcore " actually have the tamest audiences.

They jump in and two-step or windmill for a few seconds, then move out and

other people move in. I don't like the shoving and pushing crowds. I'm the

mom, you know, and I only really get to go when I take kids and I feel

responsible for getting them home in one piece.

peace,

sharon

I don't know Hatebreed. I think a unifying thread in those currently

calling themselves hardcore is playing breakdowns, but I dunno for sure. My

son told me to buy the DVD " American Hardcore " and it will answer all my

questions. I think actually he just wants it for himself...

ugh...

ok..have to dsay it

that movies a piece of trash

1. for your purposes, its a different style of hardcore...

it means the style of punk i know and lived....

what they call hardcore is a different style entirely

2. like the book, the author is a self serving ego-maniac

3. while the movie gives some good band background, its HORRIBLY limited, and

only deals with the authors small group/what he knows..and once he left " punk " ,

then punk died...its a joke really

i literally got all of 20 pages into the book the first time i tried reading it

before i tossed it across the room in disgust

hahahahahah

you've been warned....

:)

cheers

Thanks for the warning, but I ordered it already. I think there is some

music on there my son is interested in having. But that's basically what

Robbie said ... that it has evolved over the years, and what was once

hardcore is now punk, what was once metal is now hardcore, or whatever.

Yeah, it is so much easier for me because I don't know enough to be able to

compartmentalize it!

peace,

sharon

heh

hardcore (as in the movie) is a subsect of punk

it is a american version that started in the early 80's when bands started

playing faster and more aggressive

see black flag, circle jerks, bad brains, DOA, minor threat, and a billion other

bands at that time

hardcore then started to only be associated with a certain NY sound, which

started with agnostic front, and eventaully morphed into a slower sound, but

with harder guitar, and lots of downbeats

what is called hardcore today is a much slower but harder style..closer to metal

in a lot of respects...with a much different vocal style then early 80's

hardcore punk..

personally, not my style, but..eh..wotever...

that just ain't so.

The most gentle crowds I have come across are the death metal crowds,

strangely enough - then the prog metal.
