1) Regarding Yama & Yami SB 6.6.40: Samjna, the wife of Vivasvan, the sun-god, gave birth to the Manu named Shraddhadeva, and the same fortunate wife also gave birth to the twins Yamaräja and the River Yamuna. Then Yami (Yamunia), while wandering on the earth in the form of a mare, gave birth to the Ashvini-kumaras. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 2) Regarding sister/brother incest: SB 4.8.2: Another son of Lord Brahma was Irreligion, whose wife’s name was Falsity. From their combination were born two demons named Dambha, or Bluffing, and Maya, or Cheating. These two demons were taken by a demon named Nirati, who had no children. PURPORT It is understood herein that Adharma, Irreligion, was also a son of Brahmä, and he married his sister Mrsha. This is the beginning of sex life between brother and sister. This unnatural combination of sex life can be possible in human society only where there is Adharma, or Irreligion. It is understood that in the beginning of creation Brahma created not only saintly sons like Sanaka, Sanatana and Narada but also demonic offspring like Nirati, Adharma, Dambha and Falsity. Everything was created by Brahma in the beginning. Regarding Narada, it is understood that because his previous life was very pious and his association very good, he was born as Narada. Others were also born in their own capacities, according to their backgrounds. The law of karma continues birth after birth, and when there is a new creation, the same karma comes back with the living entities. They are born in different capacities according to karma even though their father is originally Brahmä, who is the exalted qualitative incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: [see attachment of family-tree excerpt --it shows some of Lord Brahma's Last/Youngest Children along with shloka verse numbers --albeit this is not a very legible copy]

"'"Mura's great capital city is Chandravati. From that base the terribly evil and powerful Mura demon has conquered the whole world and brought all the demigods under his control, driving them out of their heavenly kingdom. He has assumed the roles of Indra, the king of heaven; Agni, the fire-god; Yama, the lord of death; Vayu, the wind-god; Isha, or Lord Shiva; Soma, the moon-god; Nairrti, the lord of the directions; and Pasi, or Varuna, the water-god. He has also begun emanating light in the role of the sun-god and has turned himself into the clouds as well. It is impossible for the demigods to defeat him. O Lord Vishnu, please kill tis demon and make the demigods victorious." "'Hearing these words from Indra, Lord Janardana became very angry and said, "O powerful demigods, all together you may now advance on Mura's capital city of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chandravati</st1:place></st1:City>." Encouraged thus, the assembled demigods proceeded to Chandravati with Lord Hari leading the way. "'When Mura saw the demigods, that foremost of demons started roaring very loudly in the company of countless thousands of other demons, who were all holding brilliantly shining weapons. The mighty-armed demons struck the demigods, who began abandoning the battlefield and fleeing in the ten directions. Seeing the Supreme Lord Hrsikesha, the master of the senses, present on the battlefield, the furious demons rushed toward Him with various weapons in their hands. As they charged the Lord, who holds a sword, disk, and club, He immediately pierced all their limbs with His sharp, poisonous arrows. thus many hundred of demons died by the Lord's hand. "'At last the chief demon, Mura, began fighting with the Lord. Mura used his mystic power to render useless whatever weapons the Supreme Lord Hrsikesa unleashed. Indeed, to the demon the weapons felt just like flowers striking him. When the Lord could not defeat the demon even with various kinds of weapons - whether those that are thrown or those that are held - He began fighting with His bare hands, which were as strong as iron-studded clubs. The Lord wrestled with Mura for one thousand celestial years and then, apparently fatigued, left for Badarikashrama. There Lord Yogeshvara, the greatest of all yogis, the Lord of the universe, entered a very beautiful cave named Himavati to rest. O Dhananjaya, winner of wealth, that cave was ninety-six miles in diameter and had only one entrance. I went there out of fear, and also to sleep. There is no doubt about this, O son of Pandu, for the great fight made me very tired. the demon followed Me into that cave and, seeing Me asleep, started thinking within his heart, "Today I will kill this slayer of all demons, Hari." "'While the wicked-minded Mura was making plans in this way, from My body there manifested a young girl who had a very bright complexion. O son of Pandu, Mura saw that she was equipped with various brilliant weapons and was ready to fight. Challenged by that female to do battle, Mura prepared himself and then fought with her, but he became very astonished when he saw that she fought him without cessation. The king of the demons then said, "Who has created this angry, fearsome girl who is fighting me so powerfully, just like a thunderbolt falling upon me?' After saying this, the demon continued to fight with the girl. "'Suddenly that effulgent goddess shattered all of Mura's weapons and in a moment deprived him of his chariot. He ran toward her to attacker with his bare hands, but when she saw him coming she angrily cut off his head. Thus the demon at once fell to the ground and went to the abode of Yamaraja. The rest of the Lord's enemies, out of fear and helplessness, entered the subterranean Patala region. "'Then the Supreme Lord woke up and saw the dead demo before Him, as well as the maiden bowing down to him with joined palms. His face expressing His astonishment, the Lord of the universe said, "Who has killed this vicious demon? He easily defeated all the demigods, Gandharvas, and even Indra himself, along with Indra's companions, the Maruts, and he also defeated the Nagas (snakes), the rulers of the lower planets. He even defeated Me, making Me hide in this cave out of fear. Who is it that has so mercifully protected Me after I ran from the battlefield and went to sleep in this cave?" "'The maiden said, "It is I who have killed this demon after appearing from Your transcendental body. Indeed, O Lord Hari, when he saw You sleeping he wanted to kill You. Understanding the intention of this thorn in the side of the three worlds, I killed the evil rascal and this freed all the demigods from fear. I am Your great maha-sakti, Your internal potency, who strikes fear into the hearts of all Your enemies. I have killed this universally terrifying demon to protect the three worlds. Please tell me why You are surprised to see that this demon has been killed, O Lord." "'The Supreme Personality of Godhead said, "O sinless one, I am very satisfied to see that it is you who have killed this king of the demons. In this way you have made the demigods happy, prosperous, and full of bliss. Because you have given pleasure to all the demigods in the three worlds, I am very pleased with you. Ask any boon you may desire, O auspicious one. I will give it to you without a doubt, though it be very rare among the demigods." ""The maiden said, "O Lord, if You are pleased with me and wish to give me a boon, then give me the power to deliver from the greatest sins that person who fasts of this day. I wish that half the pious credit obtained by one who fasts will accrue to one who eats only in the evening (abstaining from grains and beans), and that half of this pious credit will be earned by one who eats only at midday. Also, may one who strictly observes a complete fast on my appearance day, with controlled senses, go to the abode of Lord Vishnu for one billion kalpas after he has enjoyed all kinds of pleasures in this world. This is the boon I desire to attain by Your mercy, my Lord, O Lord Janardana, whether a person observes complete fasting, eats only in the evening, or eats only at midday, please grant him a religious attitude, wealth, and at last liberation." "'The Supreme Personality of Godhead said, "O most auspicious lady, what you have requested is granted. All My devotees in this world will surely fast on your day, and thus they will become famous throughout the three worlds and finally come and stay with me in My abode. Because you, My transcendental potency, have appeared on the eleventh day of the waning moon, let your name by Ekadasi. If a person fasts on Ekadasi, I will burn up all his sins and bestow upon him My transcendental abode. "'"These are the days of the waxing and waning moon that are most dear to Me: Tritiya (the third day), Ashthami (the eighth day), Navami (the ninth day), Chaturdasi (the fourteenth day), and especially Ekadasi (the eleventh day). "'"The merit one attains by fasting on Ekadasi is greater than that achieved by observing any other kind of fast or by going to a place of pilgrimage, and even greater than that achieved by giving charity to brahmanas. I tell you most emphatically that this is true." "'Having thus given the maiden His benediction, the Supreme Lord suddenly disappeared. From that time onward the Ekadasi day became most meritorious and famous all over the universe. O Arjuna, if a person strictly observes Ekadasi, I kill all his enemies and grant him the highest destination. Indeed, if a person observes this great Ekadasi fast in any of the prescribed way, I remove all obstacles to his spiritual progress and grant him the perfection of life. "'Thus, O son of Prtha, I have described to you the origin of Ekadasi. This one day removes all sins eternally. Indeed, it is the most meritorious day for destroying all kinds of sins, and it has appeared in order to benefit everyone in the universe by bestowing all varieties of perfection. This was excerpted from Utpanna Ekadasi [from the Bhavisya-uttara Purana] as found in the celebrated book, "Ekadasi: The Day of Lord Hari" 1986. pages 13 - 22. HH Krishna Balaram Swami. Bhaktajan seeks to show that “Devi’s” existence required finding an appropriate Husband lest adi-purusha would be re-miss; fortunately the standard has been established by MahaVishnu for all mankind to emulate [ie: Svayambhuva Manu's daughter Devahuti --after thoroughly searching--found Kardama-muni which made way for Kapila etc etc etc]: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: How to find a good Husband for a Devi? or (Maybe Devi is the root of God’s Existance?) [ PREFACE: . . . Neither the merit one receives by taking a bath in the sacred place of pilgrimage known as Sankhoddhara, where the Lord killed the Sankhasura demon, nor the merit one receives upon seeing Lord Gadadhara directly is equal to one sixteenth of the merit one obtains by fasting on Ekadasi. It is said that by giving charity on a Monday when the moon is full, one obtains a hundred thousand times the results of ordinary charity. O winner of wealth, one who gives charity on the day of the sankranti (equinox) attains four hundred thousand times the ordinary result. Yet simply by fasting on Ekadasi one obtains all these pious results, as well as whatever pious results one gets at Kurukshetra during an eclipse of the sun or moon. Furthermore, the faithful soul who observes complete fasting on Ekadasi achieves a hundred times more merit than one who performs an Asvamedha-yajna (horse sacrifice). One who observes Ekadasi just once earns ten times more merit than a person who gives a thousand cows in charity to a brahmana learned in the Vedas. A person who feeds just one brahmacari earns ten times more merit than one who feeds ten good brahmanas in his own house. But a thousand times more merit than is earned by feeding a brahmacari is achieved by donating land to the needy and respectable brahmana, and a thousand time more than that is earned by giving away a virgin girl in marriage to a young, well-educated, responsible man. Ten times more beneficial than this is educating children properly on the spiritual path, without expecting any reward in return. Ten times better than this, however, is giving food grains to the hungry. Indeed, giving charity to those in need is the best of all, and there never has been or ever will be a better charity than this. O son of Kunti, all the forefathers and demigods in heaven become very satisfied when one gives food grains in charity. But the merit one obtains by observing a complete fast on Ekadasi cannot be measured. O Arjuna, best of all Kurus, the powerful effect of this merit is inconceivable even to the demigods, and half this merit is attained by one who eats only supper on Ekadasi. One should therefore observe fasting on Lord Hari's day either by eating only once at midday, abstaining from grains and beans; or by fasting completely. The processes of staying in places of pilgrimage, giving charity, and performing fire sacrifices may boast only as long as Ekadasi has not arrived. Therefore anyone afraid of the miseries of material existence should observe Ekadasi. . . . excerpted from the Bhavisya-uttara Purana. ] ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Why Ekadasi is the most purifying of all days Excerpted from the Bhavisya-uttara Purana: Lord Sri Krishna: “I will tell you why Ekadasi is the most purifying of all days. In the Satya-Yuga there once lived an amazingly fearsome demon called Mura. Always very angry, he terrified all the demigods, defeating even Indra, the king of heaven; Vivasvan, the sun-god; the eight Vasus; Lord Brahma; Vayu. the wind-god; and Agni, the fire-god. With his terrible power he brought them all under his control. "'Lord Indra then approached Lord Shiva and said, "We have all fallen from our planets and are now wandering helplessly on the earth. O lord, how can we find relief from this affliction? What will be the fate of us demigods?' "'Lord Shiva replied, "O best of the demigods, go to that place where Lord Vishnu, the rider of Garuda, resides. He is Jagannatha, the master of all the universes and their shelter as well. He is devoted to protecting all souls surrendered to Him.'" "Lord Krishna continued, 'O Arjuna, winner of wealth, after Lord Indra heard these words of Lord Shiva's, he proceeded with all the demigods to the place where Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the universe, the protector of all souls, was resting. Seeing the Lord sleeping upon the water, the demigods joined their palms and, led by Indra, recite the following prayers: "'"O Supreme Personality of Godhead, all obeisances to You. O Lord of lords, O You who are praised by the foremost demigods, O enemy of all demons, O lotus-eyed Lord, O Madhusudana (killer of the Madhu demon), please protect us. Afraid of the demon Mura, we demigods have come to take shelter of You. O Jagannatha, You are the doer of everything and the creator of everything. You are the mother and the father of all universes. You are the creator, the maintainer, and the destroyer of all. You are the supreme helper of all the demigods, and You alone can bring peace to them. You alone are the earth, the sky, and the universal benefactor. "'"You are Shiva, Brahma, and also Vishnu, the maintainer of the three worlds. You are the gods of the sun, moon, and fire. You are the clarified butter, the oblation, the sacred fire, the mantras, the rituals, the priests, and the silent chanting of japa. You are the sacrifice itself, its sponsor, and the enjoyer of its results, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Nothing within these three worlds, whether moveable or immovable, can exist independent of You. O Supreme Lord, Lord of lords, You are the protector of those who take shelter of You. O supreme mystic, O shelter of the fearful, please rescue and protect us. We demigods have been defeated by the demons and have thus fallen from the heavenly realm. Deprived of our positions, O Lord of the universe, we are now wandering about this earthly planet."' "Lord Krsna continued, 'Having heard Indra and the other demigods speak these words, Sri Vishnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, replied, "What demon possesses such great powers of delusion that he has been able to defeat all the demigods? What is his name, and where does he live? Where does he get his strength and shelter? Tell Me everything, O Indra, and do not fear." "'Lord Indra replied, "O Supreme Godhead, O Lord of lords, O You who vanquish the fear in Your pure devotees' hearts, O You who are so kind to your faithful servants, there was once a powerful demon of the Brahma dynasty whose name was Nadijangha. he was extraordinarily fearsome and wholly dedicated to destroying the demigods, and he begot an infamous son named Mura.

Again, the Bhagavata-purana enumerates the family-tree of Lord Brahma's descendents up to the 11th Century CE. Lord Brahma's sons wnet on to live theirown lives and also to populate and rule over cosmic affairs up the present moment and will continue until all of the cosmos are anihilated along with every living soul --unless the said souls escapes . . . Lord Brahma is approximately 50 years old. In this present day of Brahma --we are living now during the reign of the 7th Manu. Brahma was born 115 Trillion earth years ago. The puranas are histories that occured at vastly different epochs & Kalpas during Brahma's first 50 years--some puranas span different Brahmas from different Brahmandas. So, the events & dharma & pastimes & level-of-consciousness & the political maneuvers of Maharajas & mighty despots create different situations where different mystic events occur for the upliftment and enlightement and civic tranquility are given a framework to transpire. Reading, studying, and even hearing of all such events, as recorded & transcribed by Vyasadeva, are always for the greater good irregardless of local traditions or conditioning --yet they may not be palatable to those without thorough literacy --so the puranas are duly divided to accomodate the different modes of personal preferences. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Shreela Vyasa-deva, originally compiled the Vedic wisdom. The final, most perfect and sublime work by Shreela Vyasa-deva is Shreemad-Bhagavata Purana, which is the natural commentary on the Vedanta-sutra. There is also the Bhagavad-geeta, which was spoken by the Lord Himself and recorded by Vyasadeva. These are the most important revealed scriptures, and any commentary that contradicts the principles of the Bhagavad-geeta or Shreemad-Bhagavata Purana is unauthorized. There is complete agreement among the Upanishads, Vedanta-sutra, Vedas, Bhagavad-geeta and Shreemad-Bhagavata Purana, and no one should try to reach any conclusion about the Vedas without receiving instructions from members of Vyasadeva’s disciplic succession, who believe in the Personality of Godhead and His diverse energies as they are explained in the Vedic Tradition that has been sheltered by the Maharajas who understood the ultimate purpose of dharma.

Adventures in Etymology: But our discussion is the use of the name Demi-god ---and thus the word "demi". My Dictionary also says: demi- 1. half (From Latin dimidium, "divided in half"; and dimidius . . .) Which seems to me, a non-Latin speaker, --as demigod in both examples --why is that? Anyway, upon further exploration, my Dictionary also says: Demos = From Greek --the common people; populace; district, people; Demagog, also Demagogue, noun; a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular passions and prejudices. Gk dēmagōgós a leader of the people, popular leader, equiv. to dêm(os) people + agōgós leading, guiding; see -agogue. From agein, to lead; see <TT>ag-</TT> in Indo-European roots. -agogue or -agog, a combining form with the meaning “leader, bringer,”; Gk -agōgos, -ē, -on, akin to ágein to lead, c. L agere to lead, drive, ON aka to carry, convey. suffix A substance that stimulates the flow of; ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: So demi-god means, Half a leader of the people? ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: So, similarly the definition of "God" seems to be: The force, effect, or a manifestation or aspect of this being. A being of supernatural powers or attributes, believed in and worshiped by a people, especially a male deity thought to control some part of nature or reality. An image of a supernatural being; an idol. One that is worshiped, idealized, or followed: Money was their god. A very handsome man. A powerful ruler or despot. <!--// //--><!--EOF_DEF--><!--BOF_DEF-->or as MONOTHEISTS think: A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe, the principal object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It would seem that anyone who thinks God is more than ONE is a pagan, hedon, animist --or anything other than a monotheist. Since, by definition God is of one of two groups: ONE Almighty Transcendent Person or Multiple subjective conceptions befitting all stratum of species. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: IMO, one who says DEMIGOD is a derogatory term are saying that no God is a Demi-god if that God is to be called GOD; They are saying that 'God is God' no matter how many other God-competitors or God-contemporaries exist simultaneously. They are saying, 'If my God exists, and your God exist too --then how can any one God be the Supreme God'? They are saying, 'If my God is not supreme, then none are supreme.' but, IMO, the term "God" refers to a single entity.

Memebers of Iskcon should fearlessly criticise the karmi leaders, movers & shakers immediately without let down. ISKCON should assume the position of the worlds' William F. Buckley or Robert Frost or Lewis Carrol or Upton Sinclair or Ralph Nader etc, to be considered the most insightfull and acid wits and the greatest social satirists of all time--rather than their members and associate congregants remain mute and hoard the stockpile of Krishna-Prema & Krishna-Karma, and keep it within their own sanctorum! Memebers of Iskcon, as we all are, have watched indifferently throughout the course of our collectively recent world history --that mocks are earnest efforts to inform karmis of how to avoid ugra-karma. "While good men stayed silent" --all atrocious & heinous adharma prospers among "LOSERS ON A WORLD-WIDE SCALE"-- propaganda abounds while mudhas practice their craft of spinning chaos at a more affordable price day-after-day. The karmis are usurping all Yoga terminology and thus I will presume to say that they know what we know but cannot articulate it because they have not witnessed a bold devotee personally speak-up. Yall think we've yet been In-Their-Faces? Ya'll ain't seen nothin yet.

There is an english word "demagog" Variant of demagogue-- hence, the word demi-god: Demagogy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia <!-- start content -->Demagogy (also demagoguery) (Ancient Greek δημαγωγία, from δῆμος dēmos "people" and ἄγειν agein "to lead") refers to a political strategy for obtaining and gaining political power by appealing to the popular prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public — typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist or populist themes. –noun <TABLE class=luna-Ent><TBODY><TR><TD class=dnindex>1.</TD><TD>a person, esp. an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE class=luna-Ent><TBODY><TR><TD class=dnindex>2.</TD><TD>(in ancient times) a leader of the people.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>–verb (used with object) <TABLE class=luna-Ent><TBODY><TR><TD class=dnindex>3.</TD><TD>to treat or manipulate (a political issue) in the manner of a demagogue; obscure or distort with emotionalism, prejudice, etc.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>–verb (used without object) <TABLE class=luna-Ent><TBODY><TR><TD class=dnindex>4.</TD><TD>to speak or act like a demagogue.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> --A term of disparagement ever since it was first used in Athens, 5c. The Vedas enumerate the sons of Lord Brahma after he was born from Maha-Vishnu. Lord Brahma is a spirit soul alive with a material body within the material universe. Lord Brahma is a spirit soul with responsibilities and the power that is accorded to his rank. Lord Brahma is the only person in this universe who possesses his unique prestige as, Father of all living creatures within this Brahmanda. Brahman (the all-prevading self-luminous-void), Param-atma (life-force within the nucleus of every particle of creation), and lastly, Bhagavan (the reservoir of all personal perfections) are the three catagories of Mystic attainments --A demigod [& their aditya-cousins] knows this too. Again, the Bhagavata-purana enumerates the family-tree of Lord Brahma's descendents up to the 11th Century CE. There is one "Almighty God", who created the manifest cosmos for the rectification & reconciliation of the souls who have left Krishna's Lila in Vaikuntha inorder to seek out self-lordship within the material worlds --just as Lord Brahma has done along with all his descendants, the Demigods & Adityas too. Lord Brahma's sons wnet on to live theirown lives and also to populate and rule over cosmic affairs up the present moment and will continue until all of the cosmos are anihilated along with every living soul --unless the said souls escapes . . . ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: regarding your "wondering"-- it is best not to 'wonder' --but to know your exact coordinates--materially, physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially, politcally --it is best to be informed perfectly/completely/absolutely, rather than according to one's whims and conditioning. A boss of mine once said to me "If you don't know the answer or industry standard to a question, do not speculate--ask the authority for the answer--lest you later quote you own wrong speculation, in lieu of the real answer".

Pankaja dasa, You are correct. The Devas must be beholding to the Bhaktas' needs and requests too--they are your cousins. Paramatama must be approached. Your own talents may be being overlooked by you. Also, you may be self-denying your due allotment(s)--[just remember ukta- vairagya]. You may unconsciously be denying your sentiments you adhere to. Or vise versa, your conscous sentiments are denying your unconscious desires. Whatever may be the source--the remedy is to assemble your skills and seek out a hybrid position that was there all this time --that was overlooked. "Follow your Bliss"--this may work for you. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: täpa-traya—the threefold miseries [sB 3.22.32]: The material world, or material existential life, is filled with threefold miseries: miseries pertaining to the body and mind, miseries pertaining to natural disturbances and miseries inflicted by other living entities. The threefold material miseries are miseries arising from the body and the mind, miseries arising from dealings with other living entities, and miseries arising from natural disturbances. Sometimes we suffer bodily when we are attacked by a fever, and sometimes we suffer mentally when a close relative dies. Other living entities also cause us misery. There are living entities born of the human embryo, of eggs, perspiration and vegetation. Miserable conditions brought about by natural catastrophes are controlled by the higher demigods. There may be severe cold or thunderbolts, or a person may be haunted by ghosts. These threefold miseries are always before us, and they entrap us in a dangerous situation. Padaà padaà yad vipadäm. There is danger in every step of life. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SB 10.3.1-5P: The business of the asuras is to disturb the suras, the devotees and brähmaëas. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SB 3.5.40: "O Father, O Lord, O Personality of Godhead, the living entities in the material world can never have any happiness because they are overwhelmed by the three kinds of miseries. Therefore they take shelter of the shade of Your lotus feet, which are full of knowledge, and we also thus take shelter of them." PURPORT The way of devotional service is neither sentimental nor mundane. It is the path of reality by which the living entity can attain the transcendental happiness of being freed from the three kinds of material miseries—miseries arising from the body and mind, from other living entities and from natural disturbances. Everyone who is conditioned by material existence—whether he be a man or beast or demigod or bird—must suffer from ädhyätmika (bodily or mental) pains, ädhibhautika pains (those offered by living creatures), and ädhidaivika pains (those due to supernatural disturbances). His happiness is nothing but a hard struggle to get free from the miseries of conditional life. But there is only one way he can be rescued, and that is by accepting the shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The argument that unless one has proper knowledge one cannot be freed from material miseries is undoubtedly true. But because the lotus feet of the Lord are full of transcendental knowledge, acceptance of His lotus feet completes that necessity. We have already discussed this point in the First Canto (1.2.7): "There is no want of knowledge in the devotional service of Väsudeva, the Personality of Godhead. He, the Lord, personally takes charge of dissipating the darkness of ignorance from the heart of a devotee." He confirms this in Bhagavad-gétä (10.10): "Empiric philosophical speculation cannot give one relief from the threefold miseries of material existence. Simply to endeavor for knowledge without devoting oneself to the Lord is a waste of valuable time." :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SB 3.17.4 "There were earthquakes along the mountains on the earth, and it appeared that there was fire everywhere. Many inauspicious planets like Saturn appeared, along with comets, meteors and thunderbolts." PURPORT When natural disturbances occur on a planet, one should understand that a demon must have taken birth there. In the present age the number of demoniac people is increasing; therefore natural disturbances are also increasing. There is no doubt about this, as we can understand from the statements of the Bhägavatam. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SB 3.17.5 "There blew winds which were most uninviting to the touch, hissing again and again and uprooting gigantic trees. They had storms for their armies and clouds of dust for their ensigns." PURPORT When there are natural disturbances like blowing cyclones, too much heat or snowfall, and uprooting of trees by hurricanes, it is to be understood that the demoniac population is increasing and so the natural disturbance is also taking place. There are many countries on the globe, even at the present moment, where all these disturbances are current. This is true all over the world. There is insufficient sunshine, and there are always clouds in the sky, snowfall and severe cold. These assure that such places are inhabited by demoniac people who are accustomed to all kinds of forbidden, sinful activity. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SB 3.17.6-14: "The luminaries in the heavens were screened by masses of clouds, in which lightning sometimes flashed as though laughing. Darkness reigned everywhere, and nothing could be seen. The ocean with its high waves wailed aloud as if stricken with sorrow, and there was a commotion among the creatures inhabiting the ocean. The rivers and lakes were also agitated, and lotuses withered. Misty halos appeared around the sun and the moon during solar and lunar eclipses again and again. Claps of thunder were heard even without clouds, and sounds like those of rattling chariots emerged from the mountain caves. In the interior of the villages she-jackals yelled portentously, vomiting strong fire from their mouths, and jackals and owls also joined them with their cries. Raising their necks, dogs cried here and there, now in the manner of singing and now of wailing. O Vidura, the asses ran hither and thither in herds, striking the earth with their hard hooves and wildly braying. Frightened by the braying of the asses, birds flew shrieking from their nests, while cattle in the cowsheds as well as in the woods passed dung and urine. Cows, terrified, yielded blood in place of milk, clouds rained pus, the images of the gods in the temples shed tears, and trees fell down without a blast of wind. Ominous planets such as Mars and Saturn shone brighter and surpassed the auspicious ones such as Mercury, Jupiter and Venus as well as a number of lunar mansions. Taking seemingly retrograde courses, the planets came in conflict with one another". SB 3.17.15: "Marking these and many other omens of evil times, everyone but the four sage-sons of Brahmä, who were aware of the fall of Jaya and Vijaya and of their birth as Diti’s sons, was seized with fear. They did not know the secrets of these portents and thought that the dissolution of the universe was at hand." PURPORT According to Bhagavad-gétä, Seventh Chapter, the laws of nature are so stringent that it is impossible for the living entity to surpass their enforcement. It is also explained that only those who are fully surrendered to Kåñëa in Kåñëa consciousness can be saved. We can learn from the description of the Çrémad-Bhägavatam that it is because of the birth of two great demons that there were so many natural disturbances. It is to be indirectly understood, as previously described, that when there are constant disturbances on the earth, that is an omen that some demoniac people have been born or that the demoniac population has increased. In former days there were only two demons—those born of Diti—yet there were so many disturbances. At the present day, especially in this age of Kali, these disturbances are always visible, which indicates that the demoniac population has certainly increased. To check the increase of demoniac population, the Vedic civilization enacted so many rules and regulations of social life, the most important of which is the garbhädhäna process for begetting good children. In Bhagavad-gétä Arjuna informed Kåñëa that if there is unwanted population (varëa-saìkara), the entire world will appear to be hell. People are very anxious for peace in the world, but there are so many unwanted children born without the benefit of the garbhädhäna ceremony, just like the demons born from Diti. Diti was so lusty that she forced her husband to copulate at a time which was inauspicious, and therefore the demons were born to create disturbances. In having sex life to beget children, one should observe the process for begetting nice children; if each and every householder in every family observes the Vedic system, then there are nice children, not demons, and automatically there is peace in the world. If we do not follow regulations in life for social tranquillity, we cannot expect peace. Rather, we will have to undergo the stringent reactions of natural laws. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SB 10.57.30: "In Akrüra’s absence ill omens arose in Dvärakä, and the citizens began to suffer continually from physical and mental distresses, as well as from disturbances caused by higher powers and by creatures of the earth." PURPORT The word daivika here refers to disturbances caused by supernatural beings. These disturbances often manifest as natural calamities like earthquakes, tidal waves or extreme weather. Nowadays materialistic people attribute these disturbances to earthly causes, not realizing that they constitute punishment at the hands of superior beings. The word bhautikäù refers to trouble caused by fellow creatures of the earth, such as human beings, animals and insects.

Do your work and be satisfied with your own duties. You are a spirit in a material body. There are 8,400,000 species of bodies--your soul is in 1 of those species [as a male or female]. All species of living creatures do the same 4 activities: eat, sleep, mate, defend. All species of living creatures endure 6 changes: Birth, growth, endure, reproduce, dwindle, die. Time exists in in the material cosmos only. Fear is born of the knowledge. Fearlessness is born of detachment from all material concepts. If God exists--then he is the provider of the means to know him--this requires mature ettiquette. God's business is complete --our business is to do our work while seeing the variety of God's presence in all things that we may desire aspire to. Reconciling our position in the world begins with performing our own duties for the bette good of others--it is in others that we see the means to practice godly ettiquette. Intelligence is above the fickleness of the mind--so use intelligence to guard the mind. Doubts that cloud judgement are resolved by intelligent & deliberate investigation. Investigate your doubts to its conclusion. Since the material world is temporary & changing & non-eternal --the laws of duality confound (and/or supplement) lifes complexities. The constituent building blocks of Duality equates to irony --this is found in physics and many natural laws and interpersonal relationships too ['for every action there is an equal and opposite re-action']. For example: Learn well in school--only to live a life of unending Resposibilites. We become a landowner --only to be liable for higher taxes. We escape third world poverty --to be servants of wealthy people and nanny's to their children. We must be encouraged to be good students 'for our own good'--so we can later offer selfless works for the benefit of others [actually, nonetheless this will still afford future 'good-Karma-reaction' for our troubles] Work = Karma. Appropriate Work = Karma that is desirable. In-appropriate Work = Karma that is not desirable. In all cases our own work must be enlivening to all. Even a butterfly's wings stir the air and contribute to the satifactory workings of the great world outside our preview. "Ask and you will receive" --in the mean time perform your duties selflessly.

Respiratory acidosis Respiratory acidosis results from a build-up of carbon dioxide in the blood (hypercapnia) due to hypoventilation. It is most often caused by pulmonary problems, although head injuries, drugs (especially anaesthetics and sedatives), and brain tumors can cause this acidemia. Pneumothorax, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, severe pneumonia, and aspiration are among the most frequent causes. It can also occur as a compensatory response to chronic metabolic alkalosis. One key to distinguish between respiratory and metabolic acidosis is that in respiratory acidosis, the CO2 is increased while the bicarbonate is either normal (uncompensated) or increased (compensated). Compensation occurs if respiratory acidosis is present, and a chronic phase is entered with partial buffering of the acidosis through renal bicarbonate retention. However, in cases where chronic illnesses which compromise pulmonary function persist, such as late-stage emphysema and certain types of muscular dystrophy, compensatory mechanisms will be unable to reverse this acidotic condition. As metabolic bicarbonate production becomes exhausted, and extraeneous bicarbonate infusion can no longer reverse the extreme buildup of carbon dioxide associated with uncompensated respiratory acidosis, mechanical ventilation will usually be applied. Metabolic acidosis Metabolic acidosis is an increased production of metabolic acids, usually resulting from disturbances in the ability to excrete acid via the kidneys. Renal acidosis is associated with an accumulation of urea and creatinine as well as metabolic acid residues of protein catabolism. An increase in the production of other acids may also produce metabolic acidosis. For example, lactic acidosis may occur from 1 severe (PaO2 <36mm Hg) hypoxemia causing a fall in the rate of oxygen diffusion from arterial blood to tissues, or 2 hypoperfusion (e.g. hypovolemic shock) causing an inadequate blood delivery of oxygen to tissues. A rise in lactate out of proportion to the level of pyruvate, e.g. in mixed venous blood, is termed "excess lactate", and may also be an indicator of fermention due to anaerobic metabolism occurring in muscle cells, as seen during strenuous exercise. Once oxygenation is restored, the acidosis clears quickly. Another example of increased production of acids occurs in starvation and diabetic acidosis. It is due to the accumulation of ketoacids (ketosis) and reflects a severe shift from glycolysis to lipolysis for energy needs. Acid consumption from poisoning, elevated levels of iron in the blood, and chronically decreased production of bicarbonate may also produce metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is compensated for in the lungs, as increased exhalation of carbon dioxide promptly shifts the buffering equation to reduce metabolic acid. This is a result of stimulation to chemoreceptors which increases alveolar ventilation, leading to respiratory compensation, otherwise known as Kussmaul breathing (a specific type of hyperventilation). Should this situation persist the patient is at risk for exhaustion leading to respiratory failure. Mutations to the V-ATPase 'a4' or 'B1' isoforms result in distal renal tubular acidosis, a condition that leads to metabolic acidosis, in some cases with sensorineural deafness. Arterial blood gasses will indicate low pH, low blood HCO3, and normal or low PaCO2. In addition to arterial blood gas, an anion gap can also differentiate between possible causes. The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation is useful for calculating blood pH, because blood is a buffer solution. The amount of metabolic acid accumulating can also be quantitated by using buffer base deviation, a derivative estimate of the metabolic as opposed to the respiratory component. In hypovolemic shock for example, approximately 50% of the metabolic acid accumulation is lactic acid, which disappears as blood flow and oxygen debt are corrected. Treatment of uncompensated metabolic acidosis is focused upon correcting the underlying problem. When metabolic acidosis is severe and can no longer be compensated for adequately by the lungs, neutralizing the acidosis with infusions of bicarbonate may be required. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Acid-base physiology is the study of the acids, bases and their reactions in the body. For survival, acid-base homeostasis is an absolute requirement. The traditional approach to the study of acid-base physiology has been the empiric approach. The main variants are the base excess approach and the bicarbonate approach. The modern quantitative approach introduced by Peter A Stewart in 1978[1] is now emerging as the most correct approach. pH parturition pH parturition is the tendency for acids to accumulate in basic fluid compartments, and bases to accumulate in acidic compartments. The reason is that acids become negatively electric charged in basic fluids, since they donate a proton. On the other hand, bases become positively electric charged in acid fluids, since they receive a proton. Since electric charge decrease the membrane permeability of substances, once an acid enters a basic fluid and becomes electrically charged, then it cannot escape that compartment with ease and therefore accumulates, and vice versa with bases. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Alkalosis refers to a condition reducing hydrogen ion concentration of arterial blood plasma (alkalemia). Generally alkalosis is said to occur when pH of the blood exceeds 7.45. The opposite condition is acidosis. Causes The main cause of respiratory alkalosis is hyperventilation, resulting in a loss of carbon dioxide. Compensatory mechanisms for this would include increased dissociation of the carbonic acid buffering intermediate into hydrogen ions, and the related consumption of bicarbonate, both of which would lower blood pH. Metabolic alkalosis can be caused by prolonged vomiting, resulting in a loss of hydrochloric acid with the stomach content. Severe dehydration, and the consumption of alkali are other causes. It can also be caused by administration of diuretics and endocrine disorders such as Cushing's syndrome. Compensatory mechanism for metabolic alkalosis involve slowed breathing by the lungs to increase serum carbon dioxide, a condition leaning toward respiratory acidosis. Metabolic alkalosis is usually accompanied with hypokalemia. As respiratory acidosis often accompanies the compensation for metabolic alkalosis, and visa versa, a delicate balance is created between these two conditions. As the pH of blood increases, the protein in the blood becomes more ionised into anions. This causes the free calcium present in blood to bind storngly with protein. The hypocalcemia, if severe, may cause tetany (Alkalotic tetany). ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Bhaktajan: In Ayurveda, there is the term, 'AMA' --putrified un-eliminated foodstuff that rot in the intestine and then seep through the intestinal wall and cause illness by being distributed by the various circulatory systems to various bodily locations. -

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Pure water is said to be neutral. The pH for pure water at 25 °C is close to 7.0. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are said to be basic or alkaline. pH measurements are important for medicine, biology, chemistry, food science, environmental science, oceanography and many other applications. Body fluids: The pH of different body fluids, including urine, saliva, and blood, varies with function and other factors. They are mostly tightly regulated systems to keep the acid-base homeostasis. A notable acidic substance in the body is plaque. Plaque's pH is low and will dissolve teeth if not removed. The pH of blood is known to be slightly basic, at a value of 7.4. pH is vital in maintaining the functioning of cells. For example, enzymes are heavily affected by changes in pH, and have an optimum pH at which they operate. Outside a small range they can denature and cease to catalyse vital reactions. In chemistry, an alkali is a basic, ionic salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal element. Alkaline diet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Alkaline diet (also known as the alkaline acid diet and the acid alkaline diet) is a controversial dietary protocol based on the consumption of mainly fresh low sugar fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, nuts, and legumes and avoiding grains, dairy, meat and excess salt, in order to balance the acidity and alkalinity (the "pH balance") of one's body.[1] In recent years it has been the subject of several popular diet books.[2][3] Blood alkalinity (pH) is not significantly affected by diet,[4][5] except in extreme pathological cases (e.g., diabetic ketoacidosis). **Without any research supporting the claims made by these diets, many qualified dietitians, nutritionists and other health care professionals have not recommended these diets to their patients.[6] A similar theory, called the Dr. Hay diet, was developed by the American physician William Howard Hay in the 1920s. A later theory, called nutripathy, was developed by another American, Gary A. Martin, in the 1970s.[7] Others who have promulgated alkaline-acid diets include Edgar Cayce, D. C. Jarvis, Robert Young, Herman Aihara,[8] Fred Shadian, and Victor A. Marcial-Vega.[citation needed] **Bhaktajan's Footnote: See Gary Null's Views on the medical Establishment : Gary Null has attacked many facets of mainstream medicine. He argues that physicians are not actively conspiring, but are just trained and conditioned to accept the premises of their profession. Null believes that physicians have an economic interest in sickness maintenance, not prevention. Null co-authored a series of articles on cancer research, new therapies, and political influence for Penthouse, beginning with one entitled "The Great Cancer Fraud".[10][11] He accused the "medical community of suppressing alternative cancer treatments to protect the medical establishment's solid-gold cancer train." Time wrote: "From a young reporter this is to be expected. But two decades later, Null, 54, is still warning of a variety of medical bogeymen out to gull a trusting public."[9] :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Acids are used as additives to drinks and foods, as they alter their taste and serve as preservatives. Phosphoric acid, for example, is a component of cola drinks. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Processed food use Food-grade phosphoric acid is used to acidify foods and beverages such as various colas, but not without controversy regarding its health effects. It provides a tangy or sour taste and, being a mass-produced chemical, is available cheaply and in large quantities. The low cost and bulk availability is unlike more expensive natural seasonings that give comparable flavors, such as citric acid which is obtainable from lemons and limes. (However most citric acid in the food industry is not extracted from citrus fruit, but fermented by Aspergillus niger mold from scrap molasses, waste starch hydrolysates and phosphoric acid.) It is labeled as E number E338. Biological effects on bone calcium and kidney health Phosphoric acid, used in many soft drinks (primarily cola), has been linked to lower bone density in epidemiological studies. For example, a study[2] using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry rather than a questionnaire about breakage, provides reasonable evidence to support the theory that drinking cola results in lower bone density. This study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A total of 1672 women and 1148 men were studied between 1996 and 2001. Dietary information was collected using a food frequency questionnaire that had specific questions about the number of servings of cola and other carbonated beverages and that also made a differentiation between regular, caffeine-free, and diet drinks. The paper cites significant statistical evidence to show that women who consume cola daily have lower bone density. Total phosphorus intake was not significantly higher in daily cola consumers than in nonconsumers; however, the calcium-to-phosphorus ratios were lower. The study also suggests that further research is needed to confirm the findings. On the other hand, a study funded by Pepsi suggests that low intake of phosphorus leads to lower bone density. The study does not examine the effect of phosphoric acid, which binds with magnesium and calcium in the digestive tract to form salts that are not absorbed, but, rather, it studies general phosphorus intake.[3] However, a well-controlled clinical study by Heaney and Rafferty using calcium-balance methods found no impact of carbonated soft drinks containing phosphoric acid on calcium excretion.[4] The study compared the impact of water, milk, and various soft drinks (two with caffeine and two without; two with phosphoric acid and two with citric acid) on the calcium balance of 20- to 40-year-old women who customarily consumed ~3 or more cups (680 ml) of a carbonated soft drink per day. They found that, relative to water, only milk and the two caffeine-containing soft drinks increased urinary calcium, and that the calcium loss associated with the caffeinated soft drink consumption was about equal to that previously found for caffeine alone. Phosphoric acid without caffeine had no impact on urine calcium, nor did it augment the urinary calcium loss related to caffeine. Because studies have shown that the effect of caffeine is compensated for by reduced calcium losses later in the day,[5] Heaney and Rafferty concluded that the net effect of carbonated beverages – including those with caffeine and phosphoric acid - is negligible, and that the skeletal effects of carbonated soft drink consumption are likely due primarily to milk displacement. Other chemicals such as caffeine (also a significant component of popular common cola drinks) were also suspected as possible contributors to low bone density, due to the known effect of caffeine on calciuria. One other study, comprised of 30 women over the course of a week, suggests that phosphoric acid in colas has no such effect, and postulates that caffeine has only a temporary effect, which is later reversed. The authors of this study conclude that the skeletal effects of carbonated beverage consumption are likely due primarily to milk displacement.[4] (Another possible confounding factor may be an association between high soft drink consumption and sedentary lifestyle.) Cola consumption has also been linked to chronic kidney disease and kidney stones through medical research.[6] This study differentiated between the effects of cola (generally contains phosphoric acid), non-cola carbonated beverages (substitute citric acid) and coffee (control for caffeine), and found that drinking 2 or more colas per day more than doubled the incidence of kidney disease. Medical use Phosphoric acid is used in dentistry and orthodontics as an etching solution, to clean and roughen the surfaces of teeth where dental appliances or fillings will be placed. Phosphoric acid is also an ingredient in over-the-counter anti-nausea medications that also contain high levels of sugar (glucose and fructose). It should not be used by diabetics without consultation with a doctor. This acid is also used in teeth whiteners to eliminate any plaque that may be on your teeth. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Acidosis is an increased acidity (i.e. an increased hydrogen ion concentration). If not further qualified, it refers to acidity of the blood plasma. Acidosis is said to occur when arterial pH falls below 7.35, while its counterpart (alkalosis) occurs at a pH over 7.45. Arterial blood gas analysis and other tests are required to separate the main causes. The term acidemia describes the state of low blood pH, while acidosis is used to describe the processes leading to these states. Nevertheless, physicians sometimes use the terms interchangeably. The distinction may be relevant where a patient has factors causing both acidosis and alkalosis, where the relative severity of both determines whether the result is a high or a low pH. The rate of cellular metabolic activity affects and, at the same time, is affected by the pH of the body fluids. In mammals, the normal pH of arterial blood lies between 7.35 and 7.50 depending on the species (e.g. healthy human-arterial blood pH varies between 7.35 and 7.45). Blood pH values compatible with life in mammals are limited to a pH range between 6.8 and 7.8. Changes in the pH of arterial blood (and therefore the extracellular fluid) outside this range result in irreversible cell damage (<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Needham</st1:City></st1:place>, 2004). -

Search for the Hidden Treasure Since no one can trace the history of the living entity’s entanglement in material energy, the Lord says that it is beginningless. By beginningless it is meant that conditional life exists prior to the creation; it is simply manifested during and after the creation. Due to forgetfulness of his nature, the living entity, although spirit, suffers all kinds of miseries in material existence. It should be understood that there are also living entities who are not entangled in this material energy but are situated in the spiritual world. Concerning man’s search for the ultimate goal of life: Caitanya Mahäprabhu relates a story [from the commentary of Madhva which occurs in the Fifth Canto of Çrémad-Bhägavatam] about the astrologer Sarvajïa and a poor man who came to him to have his future told. When Sarvajïa saw the horoscope of the man, he was at once astonished that the man was so poor, and he said to him, “Why are you so unhappy? From your horoscope I can see that you have a hidden treasure left to you by your father. However, the horoscope indicates that your father could not disclose this to you because he died in a foreign place, but now you can search out this treasure and be happy.” This story is cited because the living entity is suffering due to his ignorance of the hidden treasure of his Supreme Father, Kåñëa. That treasure is love of Godhead, and in every Vedic scripture the conditioned soul is advised to find it. As stated in Bhagavad-gétä, although the conditioned soul is the son of the wealthiest personality—the Personality of Godhead—he does not realize it. Therefore Vedic literatures are given to him to help him search out his father and his paternal property. The astrologer Sarvajïa further advised the poor man: “Don’t dig on the southern side of your house to find the treasure, for if you do so you will be attacked by a poisonous wasp and will be baffled. The search should be conducted on the eastern side where there is actual light, which is called devotional service or Kåñëa consciousness. On the southern side there are Vedic rituals, and on the western side there is mental speculation, and on the northern side there is meditational yoga.” Sarvajïa’s advice should be carefully noted by everyone. If one searches for the ultimate goal by the ritualistic process, he will surely be baffled. Such a process involves the performance of rituals under the guidance of a priest who takes money in exchange for service. A man may think he will be happy by performing such rituals, but actually if he does gain some result from them, it is only temporary. His material distresses will continue. Thus he will never become truly happy by following the ritualistic process. Instead, he will simply increase his material pangs more and more. The same may be said for digging on the northern side, or searching for the treasure by means of the meditational yoga process. By this process a person thinks of becoming one with the Supreme Lord, but this merging into the Supreme is like being swallowed by a large serpent. Sometimes a large serpent swallows a smaller one, and merging into the spiritual existence of the Supreme is analogous. While the small serpent is searching after perfection, he is swallowed. Obviously there is no solution here. On the western side there is also an impediment in the form of a yakña, an evil spirit who protects the treasure. The idea is that a hidden treasure can never be found by one who asks the favor of a yakña in order to attain it. The result is that one will simply be killed. This yakña is the speculative mind, and in this case the speculative process of self-realization, or the jïäna process, is also suicidal. The only possibility then is to search for the hidden treasure on the eastern side by the process of devotional service in full Kåñëa consciousness. Indeed, that process of devotional service is the perpetual hidden treasure, and when one attains to it, he becomes perpetually rich. One who is poor in devotional service to Kåñëa is always in need of material gain. Sometimes he suffers the bites of poisonous creatures, and sometimes he is baffled; sometimes he follows the philosophy of monism and thereby loses his identity, and sometimes he is swallowed by a large serpent. It is only by abandoning all this and becoming fixed in Kåñëa consciousness, devotional service to the Lord, that one can actually achieve the perfection of life. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CC Adi 7.20-21: "The characteristics of Kåñëa are understood to be a storehouse of transcendental love. Although that storehouse of love certainly came with Kåñëa when He was present, it was sealed. But when Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu came with His associates of the Païca-tattva, they broke the seal and plundered the storehouse to taste transcendental love of Kåñëa. The more they tasted it, the more their thirst for it grew." ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CC Adi 7.24: "Although the members of the Païca-tattva plundered the storehouse of love of Godhead and ate and distributed its contents, there was no scarcity, for this wonderful storehouse is so complete that as the love is distributed, the supply increases hundreds of times." PURPORT A pseudo incarnation of Kåñëa once told his disciple that he had emptied himself by giving him all knowledge and was thus spiritually bankrupt. Such bluffers speak in this way to cheat the public, but actual spiritual consciousness is so perfect that the more it is distributed, the more it increases. Bankruptcy is a term that applies in the material world, but the storehouse of love of Godhead in the spiritual world can never be depleted. Kåñëa is providing for millions and trillions of living entities by supplying all their necessities, and even if all the innumerable living entities wanted to become Kåñëa conscious, there would be no scarcity of love of Godhead, nor would there be insufficiency in providing for their maintenance. Our Kåñëa consciousness movement was started single-handedly, and no one provided for our livelihood, but at present we are spending hundreds and thousands of dollars all over the world, and the movement is increasing more and more. Thus there is no question of scarcity. Although jealous persons may be envious, if we stick to our principles and follow in the footsteps of the Païca-tattva, this movement will go on unchecked by imitation svämés, sannyäsés, religionists, philosophers or scientists, for it is transcendental to all material considerations. Therefore those who propagate the Kåñëa consciousness movement should not be afraid of such rascals and fools.

Industrial Farm Animal Production In the 1950s, the advent of nitrogen-based fertilizer allowed farmers to rapidly maximize their output. This was particularly true of corn crops. In 1940, a farmer could expect 70 to 80 bushels of corn per acre. Today, that number has reached 200 bushels. This corn, in turn, has been used to feed livestock and poultry for quick and efficient growth. In 2007, the U.S. produced 48.7 billion pounds of commercial red meat, 90.6 billion eggs and 8.1 billion chickens, according to the USDA. About the Study The study's findings are based on samples of 480 servings of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and fries purchased from McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's chains. The authors, who were unpaid, purchased the samples from three restaurants per chain in six <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<st1:place w:st=" /><st1:country-region w:st="on">U.S.</st1:country-region> cities: <st1:City w:st="on">Los Angeles</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">San Francisco</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">Denver</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">Detroit</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">Boston</st1:City> and <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Baltimore</st1:place></st1:City>. Once purchased, the samples were freeze-dried and tested for carbon and nitrogen isotopes over a two-year period. Hamburgers Based on the carbon isotopic signatures found in the sample meat, the study's authors argue that the cattle had been strictly confined and fed predominantly corn. Samples from Burger King showed the greatest variability, indicating that some cattle may have eaten natural vegetation or other feeds instead. The nitrogen isotopic ratios were much higher than ones found in grass-fed and free-range beef. The authors attributed these findings to feed produced with nitrogen fertilizer and severe containment conditions. Chicken Sandwiches The authors found widespread homogeneity of chicken samples across chains. The chickens used were predominantly corn-fed. While the chicken samples had lower nitrogen levels than beef, the authors argue that they remained high enough to demonstrate that the poultry had been raised in extreme confinement. French Fries Samples of French fries revealed that the restaurant chains are using one frying oil or a combination of oils despite claims stating otherwise. Wendy's, for example, claims their fries may contain one or more of canola, soy, cottonseed or corn oil. In fact, the study's findings pointed to a nationwide "corn-oil based protocol" for fries. Is Fast Food Safe? The study does not make any claims about the healthfulness of corn or nitrogen. To be clear, the consumption of animals that subsist on corn diets and have minimal nitrogen byproducts in their tissues has not been proven unsafe. The point of the study, says its authors, is to draw attention to the food production process. What the Results Mean In some ways, the results aren't very controversial. We already know that industrial farm animals subsist primarily on a corn diet and are kept in confined spaces. The results were uniform across geography and chains, indicating the same feed and confinement approaches. But the results also showed that certain restaurants used different french fry oils than reported. Worse yet, the authors suggested that the nitrogen isotope signatures for certain meat products were consistent with such environments where animals had consumed their own waste. What the Study Leaves Out The study did not evaluate levels of hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals and pesticides. Some health experts argue that these substances, which are used in industrial farm animal production, pose a serious risk to public health. A 2008 report issued by the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production linked the rise of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in farm animals. It also reported on previous findings that animals in confined settings are more likely to contract and spread a disease. Criticism of the Study Dr. Frank Monahan, a scientist at University College Dublin, called Jahren's approach scientifically sound, but he questioned the conclusiveness of the study's findings. The levels of nitrogen, he says, may not be directly linked to confinement practices. Instead, they may reflect that most conventionally raised beef and poultry are given feed that was grown with nitrogen-enriched fertilizer. And while the high levels of carbon 13 indicate a diet abundant with corn, Monahan says the results are not as conclusive as the authors suggest. Restaurant Policies In the past, major restaurant chains have been resistant to disclose how their food is produced or agreeing to use suppliers that allow more freedom among animals. In 2007, Burger King made a major move in that direction when it announced that 2% of its eggs would be "cage free" and 10% of its pork would be sourced from farms that permit sows to move inside pens instead of remaining in crates. Wendy's does not provide information about its suppliers or food production practices. McDonald's declined to comment. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: What's Really In Your Fast Food? A new report reveals how your favorite hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and fries go from farm to table. may want to reconsider getting that double cheeseburger with fries. A study released today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences contains controversial claims about menu items served at McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King. Using a technique that identifies carbon and nitrogen isotopes in meat, co-authors A. Hope Jahren and Rebecca Kraft tried to determine the animals' diets and in what conditions they were raised. Based on the high levels of carbon and nitrogen isotopes found in the meat products, the authors claim that the cattle and poultry were predominantly fed corn, which makes them as fat as possible in as short a time as possible, and were raised in extreme confinement. In Depth: Where Does Your Fast Food Come From? In an interview, Jahren, who is a geobiologist and professor at the <st1:place w:st="on"><ST1:PUniversity of <ST1:PHawaii</st1:place>, even suggested that the nitrogen isotopic signatures found in meat products were so high that they were consistent with environments where animals had consumed their own waste. Burger King declined to comment on the study. A spokesman for Wendy's said the company has "very strict procedures in place" to protect animal welfare. A spokeswoman for McDonald's declined to comment and instead referred to a statement issued by the American Meat Institute, a trade association. Janet M. Riley, senior vice president of public affairs for AMI, said that carbon and nitrogen isotopes are naturally occurring and are expected to be found in the environment and humans. She also said that while the study's authors had called for greater transparency regarding information about livestock feeding and production practices, consumers "appear satisfied" with the amount of information currently available. Where's The Beef? Over a two-year period, the authors purchased 480 servings of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and french fries at multiple chains in six cities across the countryand tested them for carbon 13 and nitrogen 15 isotopes, both of which have been used by scientists for decades to reveal clues about eating habits in both humans and animals. Farmers use nitrogen-enriched fertilizer to rapidly maximize their output. This is particularly true of corn crops; in 1940 a farmer could expect 70 to 80 bushels of corn per acre. Today, that number has reached 200 bushels. This corn, in turn, has been used to feed livestock and poultry for quick and efficient growth. "It would be too bad if this adds to public fears about corn," she says. Dr. Frank Monahan, a scientist at University College Dublin, has used the same technique to compare the eating habits of grass-fed and conventionally raised beef in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ireland</st1:place></st1:country-region>. While he called Jahren's approach scientifically sound, he questioned the conclusiveness of the study's findings. The levels of nitrogen, he says, may not be directly linked to confinement practices. Instead, they may reflect the fact that most conventionally raised beef and poultry are given feed that was grown with nitrogen-enriched fertilizer. And while the high levels of carbon 13 indicate a diet abundant with corn, Monahan says their values could have been much higher, which would provide convincing evidence that the animals had an exclusive corn diet. This technique has been increasingly used in the past decade to analyze the eating patterns of animals that become consumer meat. "Because the food chain has become so long now, and it's a global industry, we want to know the origin of our food as consumers," says Monahan. "Consumers nowadays want to know the story of their food." Bob Goldin, executive vice president of the food industry consulting firm Technomic, says that's probably not the case with fast food customers. Jahren and Kraft, a doctoral student at <st1:place w:st="on"><ST1:PJohns </ST1:PHopkins </ST1:PUniversity</ST1:P</st1:place>, conducted the research unpaid. Jahren says she is trying to shed light on a dearth of information about how a cow becomes a McDonald's quarter-pounder, for example. "The information gap is really fascinating," says Jahren, who tried for two years without success to obtain information from Burger King, Wendy's and McDonald's about their suppliers and food production practices. McDonald's does not disclose its suppliers and Wendy's declines to do so, citing "competitive reasons."
