Do Vaishnavas keep pets like dogs & cats?
Priitaa replied to aisharya's topic in Spiritual Discussions
I don't like keeping a pet personally, but I know in some circumstances a cat is needed if you live in the woods. Basically you get to pick whether you want a cat you have some control over (including cleanliness), or mice that you have no control over and they will run you over if your home is in the woods. If a cat catches a mouse to kill it, there is no karma. If a human being sets a trap, poison, etc., there is karmic reaction. I have never found a perfect solution for keeping a pet or cat, but sometimes can't find a way around it. One point many don't think about is that if mice are passing stool all over the house, they are also passing urine! It just dries fast, so you don't see it. Gross! At least a cat scares them away, and takes their business outside. (I'm against kitty litter whenver possible. Open the door!) But attachment, that is a consideration. One must be detached yet give the pet affection cuz they are a soul, part and parcel of Krishna, and need love too! Its a delicate balance, and as I said, in some circumstances I have never found another solution. I see with a cat, they are doing service by keeping mice out. I've been to temples that had mice all over the place, even on the altar! In such cases, maybe bringing a cat inside would be better, and a service for souls in cat bodies. Am not sure if there is a service dogs can do, but there may be one. (Watchdog was mentioned.) I also understand that once you give any living creature shelter and protection, the Vedic system is that you must take full responsibility for that animal for the rest of its life. I've seen too many devotees take home a cute kitty or puppy, just to abandon it when it grew up and suddenly it wasn't cute anymore but was moochi. As if it wasn't moochie before?! There is that quote about preference to take birth in the home of a deovtee as an insect (!) than some other birth (does anyone have that quote?), therefore my understanding is we must be kind to all living creatures, yet not become attached. My children, and I think most devotee children, do not kill even a bug, but catch it with a cup and piece of paper, then put it outside. What to speak of a higher birthed animal. But I can't stress enough, detachment, detachment, detachment, without impresonalism, as we dont want to come back as a cat, or deer. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Yet I dont want to come back because I was mean to an animal. Regarding feeding pets, I don't know. There is vegetarian dog and cat food in health food stores, but it so expensive! You have to keep the animal healthy, it becomes your responsibility once you make it your pet, and with dogs you can get away with making them a vegetarian. But with cats they physically require tannin or something like that, which I have heard is only obtained thru meat. Not 100% sure this is accurate tho. Neverthelss, I still wouldn't buy them meat, thats extremely karmic and supportive of slaughter houses. If they want it, they have to hunt for it. One thing I feel strongly about is to feed them prasadam whenver possible. Shorten their karmic births this way, and aid their soul too. Even if you can only give it to them once in a while, still give it to them. They are not really animails but spirit souls stuck in animal bodies due to previous activities. Coud have been us in a past lifetime! So we need to show them mercy and help their soul evolve. Am not sure I gave any helpful answers, but something to think about. -
I finally got the book back (the one written by Nalini most recently). On pg 132 he explains that one propitiation for a malefic Mars is to chant: Om namo bhagavate narasimhaya. Also hanuman can help propitiate a malefic Mars, as he gives this mantra too: Om sri hanumate namah. Also, whether a planet is malefic or benefic in its specified action for an individual has more to do with their rising sign than if it is an intrinsic (natural) benefic or intrinsic malefic. For example, Mars is especially benefic, & is a RajaYoga for too. Matter of fact, for some people an intrinsic benefic Jupiter can reap intense malefic problems in their life when running its Dasa, if they are of specific rising signs. Hope that helps.

Q) How many Hare Krishna's does it take to put in a light bulb? A) That's not my service prabhu. /images/graemlins/smile.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/smile.gif

ROFL LOL lol If it would make you feel better, I could use some slurs and excellent insults! Oh, not just any type, such as a nondevotee would give and you simply think "what a jerk," then write them off. No, I can locate and administer, in proper dose, some of those devotee comments that go right to the core and get a person cooking. lol Of course, it would strictly be for medical purposes, and your nervousness would leave you. ha As you can tell, I really can't do that. :-) Pass the valarian root please.

Thanks Thiest, All this information is very helpful. I may print it out if thats ok with you.
-
ha Guess I wasn't clear. Basically I was just wondering if there is any information on this herb and the brain which is not from Ayurveda, but from American Herbalists? That would help convince this young man. But if not, thats ok.

Sorry Thiest, I guess I asked too many questions. I just became hopeful and therefore too zealous about it. Didn't mean to overwhelm you.

I found this part of the Bhavisya Purana to be rather disturbing, as it is contradictory to Srila Prabhuapda and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta's teachings about Mohammad. Prabhupada explains that Mohammad is shaktyavesh avatara. Therefore I must look to the way the above has been translated, and am wondering who translated it, as Srila Prabhuapda, and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta are pure deovtees and they would know.

Thiest, Thanks! He would never take another allopathic med tho. His mothers a nurse and has shoved ritilin down his throat since he was a kid. He's fed up. Said he felt it turned him toward drugs - something I always suspected about giving ritilin to children. He said he would wake up all wired, but then his mother would give him this and it immediately brought such a good feeling over him, which he liked so much, that when he got older he turned to intoxiation. (But he doesn't place blame on her.) He may take the calamus root though, but won't take a number of products at one time. So I'm wondreing what would be the most potent couple of things for him. And I know someone who will infuence him to take the herbs, etc. Plus, he expressed a bit of a desire to do so. He is new to Krishna consciousness and sort of pulled into it due to who he fell in love with (a gurukuli), and not by desire. Tho he is favorable, but he's not jumping up and down in ecstasy or anything. ha So to tell him about Ayurveda or nadis, he will listen (and I found it fascinating!), but do you know any modern medicine explanation of how it works? Or even american herbal info would get his attention. He's a very intelligent guy, can spit back facts he reads just as perfectly as he read them. Did well in school. But he's a bit spacey. He deals with retaining knowledge by completely abosrbing himself in whatever he's doing and shutting out the world. If he's reading, he can't hear his name if its called. Sometimes even if it's screamed. If he's working on a project, same thing. Tho he's not a big tv or movie watcher, when he does, same thing. He's smart, just spaced out at times. Like, when he puts his tools down, he forgets where he put them quite often. -- Don't know if this info about him helps or not. The American Calmus, I think I read its not suppose to make you high, not sure. But does it work as well? Most herbs should not be taken on an empty stomach or will usually cause a person to vomit. Tho some are more geared that way. I understand what you say about buying it in bulk and all, but I am suspecting he wont drink much of it in tea form, whereas he may be more inclined to take it in capsuled form. I hope this will still work. Anyway, disappear? ADD will disappear? That sounds too good to be true! This calamus root sounds promising! Now I have to convince him. :-) Thanks.
-
Would choline work for an adult with ADD? I know someone who has this condition. As a child he was put on Ritilin (sp) and he gave that up. He has 'self medicated' for quite a while but has stopped that too. Now he would like to know if there is anything natural he can do.

I_L_K, Doctors are not automatically devotees. At best they are humanitarians. Humanitarians come back to either do more humanitarian work, or to receive the good karma of their good works. Devotees dont want to come back, not even to recieve good karma, because ultimately karma is karma and it means rebirth and entanglement in the material world. But there can be doctors who are 'also' devotees of Krishna. That is different. And like everyone else, whether they go back to Godhead or not depends on their saddhna, service, etc.
-
This is not the first time they tried to take vitamins and minerals off the shelf. I hope they are always stopped. Many doctors who work in the hopsitals do not get enough hours of sleep. Its part of their training, and they are acutally sleep deprived. Imagine how many mistakes must happen due to a doctor who simply needs more sleep! But its actually part of the program, part of what they are suppose to do to show they are deserving. It seems to have more in common with Hazing tho. :-)

Yes, I think it was b12, and your explanation makes it sound correct. Although she was not a vegan, or her family. But its likely that her son's body could not take it up, for whatever reason. Once she gave it to him in high doses, because it was not so much a supplement for him but 'treatment' or in 'therapeutic doses,' then he gradually became a normal kid. The allopaths would never tell a parent such a thing.

Why does everyone always blame the Jews?
Priitaa replied to Gauracandra's topic in The Hinduism Forum
Babru, I wasn't insulted, no problem. I just thought it may appear I love to spread gossip so I wanted to clear that. Actually, I would not have mentioned it if the comment had not been made that Jews are even considered superior birth by Prabhupada, and Satyaraja was used as an example of this superiority. Thus, my retort. Although if Satyaraja did not write and sell us books, I would not find it as important. And I like his books! Well, I have hope and faith that every devotee, even if they make a mistake, can be forgiven and turn things around. But I do understand how "I heard" sounds unfounded. (Hmmm I thought I said I received it in email, but oh well.) I hve since deleted the eamils for one, and for the other, even if I had them, I wasn't so sure I wanted to post his private info on here, tho I guess he posted it in public himself! I can email you about it as you asked, as I dont want to say my source here. But I am trying to get the posts back so if you want to wait and see if I can, I will put at least some of them here. Enough to make the point. Let me know. -

Wouldn't that be illegal? Thats disgusting! And violates all sorts of rights, parents rights, religious rights, but I bet all the care about is abortionists rights. Ugh. I bet they could be sued tho. I wonder if anyone ever tried.

Maya, I just wanted to make sure you knew its not you we were referring to as rude, but a man who was making offensive comments. Tho you must have read some of his nonsense posts. But I see the moderator removed one of his posts. (Thank you Jn.) We are happy to ansewr your questions, and happy to have you here.

lol It was genuinely an accident. As I was trying to figure out what to post about it sort of typed up that way, and than I laughed and left it. One thing that I am now thinking of may sound very simple, but I know about incredible results. Let me first start with a devotees story. I know one devotee lady who had a child born with significant problems. In addition to going blind, he was becoming mentally retarded (for lack of a better word). He was not born that way, but whatever was wrong with him, it was doing this. She worked in the medical field so turned to mostly to allopathy and ran every test on him possible. It was also very painful for him as a baby. Over time &due to little success there, she began to turn to natural help and tried vitamins. They did not work. She tried B vitamins more than once, with little or no success. Then, and she told me this story herself, (tho I am not exaclty sure which vitamin it was), one day while in her closet, she got a message which she believes came from Krishna (and she is not a sahajiya in the least). It was: "Vitamain B 12, stupid." lol (She added the 'stupid.') She had tried that before, but she needed to raise the dose. Once she raised the dose, he began to turn around! When I knew him he was still a little mentally off (tho better than from babyhood!). However, I heard from some his age (teenagers-young adults) that he is totally normal. Matter of fact, when I asked about him being 'off,' they had no idea why I would ask this about him. That's how well it worked. -- And it was either B12 or B6. Years before that, I read a story in a health magazine about various parents who had chlidren who had been diagnosed with mental retardation and at best, some were considered 'slow.' Long story short, after doing all the doctors insisted and it did not sufficiently help, they gave their chlidren zinc, other minerals, b vitamins and other vitaims, with extremely significant results! Some of those children made a 100% turn around. Others not fully but still made signficant improvement! So I guess my suggestion for helping the brain and therefore mind, would be a good (GOOD) mineral supplement daily and an equally good vitamin supplement daily. Quality. And that's my contribution. :-)

Babru, I always check anything out like that before I state it in public. Have a little faith in me. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I received copies of his personal posts that said like this. I wish it were as you are hoping for, but that was not the case. Maybe in time he will gradually work his way up to that point, and then, further. -

This is an impersonal, "I'm your authority" reply. A hit and run, or post nonsense and leave cuz you can't defeat others good points.

What a bunch of jibberish and twisting of Prabhupada's words. But people see what they want to see, hear what they desire to hear. So if he wants to think this is what Prabhupada preached, than I guess the thousands of devotees who read his books and say otherwise are all wrong. Of course I also believe ones own comprehensions are the most important, but one must at least wonder, when they are contradictory to what nearly everyone else understands the philosophy to be. As I said in another thread, Prabhuapda explained that 90% of our advancement in Krishna consciousness is based on association. So who one chooses to associate with, and what they choose to believe, will bring about various results. I suspected he was somehow or other connected to Bhakti Ananda Swami, who has a right to his opinion but that does not make it the absolute truth, or him the guru over understanding Jesus Christ, causing all other devotees to be wrong. Even with Christ, we turn to Prabhuapda to know who he was, and not to anyone else. Prabhupada explains it simply, not with all this complicaied reading things into purports, verses, etc. Posting long, complex posts to prove his point only proves its on the mental platform. Prabhupada has also commented on this as well, that we should be able to make our points simply. As Prabhuapda has said, this process is simple for the simple, and difficult for the difficult. The false ego must first be let down, and surrender to Prabhupada. Good luck to ya.

What was that quote? Something like --- '90% of your advancement in Krishna consciousness is dependent upon association.'

Things for the brain or mind? Hmmmmm Will have to give it some thought. Oh my, what a play on words that turned out to be. LOL Was not the intent but oh well. ha
