  1. I have a couple of unopened jars of Lemon Pickle that I left in my house this summer when I went to the mountains. It gets very hot where I live and to conserve on energy I did not leave the air on. My question is will the pickle still be good? I am not sure how hot it got in my house but I know it got very hot because some shampoo bottles over-flowed and some candles are stuck to the dishes they were sitting on.
  2. I did not make myself clear - I was speaking in the positive form which I tend to do rather than the negative. Of course, one should reject any negative or demoniac qualities even if it is your parents. Prahlada Maharaj taught us this very well. He remained a pure devotee of the Supreme Lord even though His demoniac father, Hiranyakasipu, did everything he could to try to change Him, resorting even to trying to torture and kill Prahlad.
  3. Thank you for posting some positive sites to visit. I asked my ex-boss once about going on missions and he told me that it was the highlight of his young life. He had many fond memories etc. He also told me that his children were looking forward to their time. I found it very refreshing to hear that this was so enthusiastically passed on to the younger generation. So often children reject the ways of their parents. My ex-boss very gently nudged the workplace into a kind and loving place to be. It was nice to go to work everyday because of him. The next boss that came in very quickly destroyed this atmosphere.
  4. I don't know anything about the banks or syndicate etc. I know that they own a major grocery store chain.
  5. I have been to SLC and the difference is very obvious from other American cities. I have worked with a lot of mormons (being very close to Utah) and find them to be very honest in their dealings with others. One very interesting point - they are not allowed to gamble either. But they will work in casinos and casinos love to hire them because of their honesty, politeness and restriction of their faith on gambling. I saw a write up on this in the local paper once.
  6. Gauracandra - that is a very good description of Mormons. Personnally, I have no problems with them. They have their strong beliefs - I have mine. One of my ex-bosses was a devout Mormon and he was nice almost to a fault - always clean, sober, polite plus had a great sense of humor. I was sorry to see him go as he was replaced with just the opposite. I inadvertantly became a project of the local mission group however. One day the missionaries knocked on my door and I let them in. We talked for a while and they gave me their literature and a Book of Mormon and I gave them some Krishna Consciousness literature. In light, of the contribution to the SLC Temple I did not see a problem. Well.................the campaign began to convert me. They came over everyday and even started calling me. It got to be too much and I had to ask to them to stop coming over. One thing that has been sort of bothering me for a while is why did they make that huge contribution to the SLC temple? I mean, it is a very very nice gesture and extremely generous etc but they are very adamant about their faith and believe it is the only true faith. I am not sure I understand what the real agenda is with the contribution.
  7. Audio Instructions on chanting
  8. A friend of mine was there and I have emailed him asking if he has pictures and descriptions. I will let you know as soon as I hear from him.
  9. On The Power of Chanting Hare Krishna
  10. This forum is so great! I am going to make note of this in my care book for future reference. Please keep us updated on Tulasi devi.
  11. The only thing I can find so far in my Tulasi care book is about spider mites. I will keep looking - I pray that someone can help with this problem.
  12. Prahupada presented Bhagavad Gita As It Is Read the intro and then read through the book verses only (english). Then go back and read verses and purports. Then read the verses only again.
  13. Not sure if it is on-line or not. The video is probably available through Krishna Culture. Krishna Culture This segment is a part of one video. I have it through the following site on disk: The Prabhupada Archive
  14. I have a video that shows Srila Prabhupada chanting morning japa in His rooms at the Los Angeles temple. This video is very very inspiring. In one part of the video Srila Prabhupada is standing - looking at a painting of Lord Krishna at eye level. You would need to see this to see the expression on Srila Prabhupada's face to understand - it is beyond words!! Hearing and/or seeing Srila Prabhupada chanting always inspires me to chant more. I also like to play the tape in the background throughout the day.
  15. I was taught that you can wear one strand if uninitiated and three if you are. I was also taught that this helps identify you as a devotee of Lord Krsna to the Yamadutas (assistants of Lord Yamaraja) should death come for you. I mind has gone blank about two strands??
  16. Parents could perhaps homeschool the younger children building a solid foundation to help them to deal with the public school system if they should decide to go. One of many problems with the public school system is that parents expect the teachers to not only teach academics but to also teach their children moral values and etiquette. Many teachers could care less and are just trying to get through the day. There are exceptions to this so please do not take offense. I agree that public school is a form of hell - it has become a place of fear for one thing for many children. Homeschooling is the best option or finding a private school that is in tune with your needs and beliefs. Many families in my little community homeschool their children until high school. They are finding that many of the kids when they get a taste of public shool at high school choose to go back to home schooling. There is a very noticible difference in the attitudes etc between the home school teenagers and the public schooled. Not sure how it is done in other communities but one thing that people always bring up about home schooling is missing out on the school activities - in my little town - the home schooled get to participate in the prom, homecoming etc etc. So there is no problem. The other option my community has are three Christian Schools. This is a tiny tiny town so these Christian schools are basically one room schoolhouses with nice personal contact with each student. The graduating class for one of these schools last year was one!! A big party was thrown for the graduate - it was a very special memoriable honor that I am sure will be remembered fondly for a lifetime. So perhaps, if there are several devotees within an area with children they could find out how to form a nice little school like the Christian schools in my town where the children could learn academics along with devotee values.

  18. Thanks vsdprasad! I have been looking for that info!
  19. Does anyone else agree that this is a very nice thread? Wonderful association!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
  20. Isn't just important that we chant? I was taught that there are no hard and fast rules to chanting.
  21. If it had not been you - then it would have been me because I was going to respond to the question and came back in to find that you had done so first. Actually, from the looks of the posts on this thread anyone of us would have started this same conversation. It seems that a lot of valid info may be getting lost through the years. I wonder just how much else we are confused about. I will also go through my lectures, videos, books etc etc and try to find out. I do remember some videos that show Srila Prabhupada chanting on new initiates beads. I will check for details if possible.
  22. I was never told to start with the larger beads or the smaller beads but because of the thread after the 8th large bead (signifying the eight principle gopis)- I have always started with the large beads. Now I need to know if I have been doing this wrong.
  23. "but that is why I tatooed a reminder onto my wrist: I thought it was going to be bad enough dealing with fellow oldsters having flashbacks and blasting out "Stairway to Heaven" - now I'm gonna have this to worry about in the old folks home!! /images/graemlins/grin.gif
  24. This reminds me of a documentary I saw once about plastic surgery. It followed a 60 something year old woman from her first visit to after the healing. She had everything done that was possible - breast implants, lipo and other stuff I do not even know what to call. The end result was kinda eery to me - the woman is standing there in the doctor's office with a better body than most 16 year olds but with a old face!! By the way she was looking at herself in the mirror - it was obvious that she had never heard that we are not these bodies.
