I may be too harsh, but i wonder why we have some "handles" or nick names other than spiritual names or RL name? At least call yourself - bhakta samosa or gulabjamun das or something - still better than Guest.
Afraid who we are or it is just internet is impersonal place..... just voices....
I know only one devotee who have a valid excuse to remain impersonal voice.... froma sky - it is Narada muni.. this is who was doing "voice over" in Bhagavatam... (talking to Kmasa from a sky).
-
Is it you devaki?
Right now i'm sitting and thinking - OMG. Kali yuga. What a crazy place to be..... And this is just a begining.
I wonder if we can compare the present state of ISKCON right now with a Devotee community during Lord Chaitanya age.
My point is Every day of brahma on 28th maha-yuga Lord Chaitanya comes and there is ISKCON 500 years later in some form or other. Do they have same things like we have or it is different?
I say 500 years from now what would devotees remember? how one sanyasi run away with a girl friend of another devotee or they will remember Prabhupada! And they say - Prabhupada had thousands of disciples! And one of them Initiated one low born taxi guy and he became a vaisnava and he initiated somebody and in his turn he initiated thausands - .... blah blah ... and this is why we sitting here in Mayapur - all of us 150.000 gaudia IKSCON devotees and because of them we meet here every 3 months for kirtan etc....
this is that they will remember - there were fall downs i bet in Lord Chaitanya times and his own servant almost fell to some prostitutes on His south india tour. Bhatta-haris?
may be comparing to Lord Chaitanya times we doing great! Who knows? Time will show.
Worse case is to be pessimist in Krishna Consciousness. heh
PS. I need to use photo shop to be in shape i think...

From CC in conversations with Vallabha
prabhu kahe,----"bhagavatartha bujhite na pari
bhagavatartha sunite ami nahi adhikari
TRANSLATION
The Lord replied, "I do not understand the meaning of
Srimad-Bhagavatam. Indeed, I am not a suitable person to hear its meaning.
prabhu kahe,----"krsna-namera bahu artha na mani
"syama-sundara' 'yasoda-nandana,'----ei-matra jani
TRANSLATION
Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied,"I do not accept many different meanings for the holy name of Krsna. I know only that Lord Krsna is Syamasundara and Yasodanandana. That's all I know.

I think Prabhupada disapproved devotees have quiz competitions. If memory serve me it was in dallas devotees made "quiz show" among gurukulis and Prabhupada stopped this.
But I don't think this is not right if say i'm driving alot and to stay awake keep mind busy with this quizes. I can't chant then i drive - it becomes submarine japa real quickly, /images/graemlins/frown.gif and it is kind of dangerous on a road driving 80 mph.
Anyway ....
-
1. mara
2. Pulastya? (or pulaha - i think pulasya)
3. Once i was driving with Drutakarma prabhu from conference in Atlanta back to Potomac md, 6 hours drive and to keep me awake we did this quiz things. 6 hours went by with a speed of thought. And the most memorable point of this jorney was then he asked me this question and I remembered it from CC. Wow i was so "fired up" by actully remembering this small detail for some reason.
It was panchaapsara lake. And Achyta moni cursed them to become crocodiles.
5. I think it is Kurma purana
6. Pradhana? mahat comes from pradhan?
7. ta-pa - aye
8. Prayag
9. 1 month?
10. Chaitanya initiated Tukaram (way before Chaitanya's appearance)
-
Can anyone without looking to other sources answer 10 questions
(nothing to do at work so to keep the mind busy)
1. What mantra Valmiki muni was chanting before becoming self-realized?
2. What the Father's name of Ravana?
3. What the name of the lake where Arjina delivered 5 crocodiles while on his pilgrimage.
4. In which Prabhupada book it is mentioned (above mentioned question)?
5. What the name of purana where Lord Chaitanya discovered about "illusory Sita"?
6. What came 1st - Mahattattva or Pradhana?
7. What the 1st 2 sound vibrations brahma heard then he took birth.
8. Where did Rupa Goswami met Lord Chaitanya for 10 days to receive instructions from Him?
9. How many days Lord Chaitanya instructed Sanatana Goswami.
10. Who is Spiritual master of Tukarama from Pundarpura?

lava-matra sadhu-sange sarva-siddhi haya
lava matra is time about equal to the blink of the eyebrow.

we may say many things - but outcome will be like this:
There are devotees who will accept Prabhupada's statements As It Is an will engage in sex life only for procreation. And live a happy and their mind will be peaceful.
There are devotees who unable to control the sex drive and will engage in sex besides procriation. Feeling guilty for not able to live up to the their own expectations as well as Guru and Sastra. Time will pass and they will be able to control their senses if they sincere.
There are devotees, because of their bad karma or past habits will be able to control it at all for long periods of time.
And vedic literature you can find everything you want to justify sex - illigal or legal.
If you sincere you will admit - yes I have this sex desires (even a blind man who never saw opposite sex in his/her life has this desires). Goal is to control senses. How? Chanting Holy names of Radha Krishna and Modana Mohana.
Some troubles will come, some help will be there. Our goal is to somehow or other remember Krishna more in duration of our life than Maya - and we will be able to >ante narayana smritihih>
and go back! enough is enough.
lets the fan blowing (if it is unplugged). Let that prarabha karma get exhausted. You fell down get up and move on. One day I will walk again stright.
PS. my comment is about husband-wife rules - i have no clue what to answer for someone who feels for same sex.

I actully digged out the post which was made a year ago on this topic....
but still I can't find why not to eat...
Say eating garlic and onion are the stumbling blocks for aspiring yogi because they are in tamo-guna and effect of eating this 2 products is .....?
besides good health and bad odor - does anyone know quotes why they bad for spiritual life?
PS. actully i found one more interesting passage -
Onion and Garlic
palandu lasunam sigrum alambum grjanam palam
bhunkte yo vai naro brahman vratam candrayanam caret
(Padma Purana, Brahma Khanda 19.10, spoken by Suta Gosvami)
O sages, one who eats garlic, onions, sigrum (a kind of plant), turnips, bottle gourd and meat, that person should observe a candrayana fast.
vrntakam jalisakam kusumbha smantakam tatha
palandu lasunam suklam niryasan caiva varjayet
grjanam kinsukan caiva kukundanca tathaiva ca
udumbaram alavun ca jagdhva patati vai dvijah
(Hari Bhakti Vilasa 8.158,159, from Kurma Purana)
One should not eat eggplant, banana leaves, sunflower leaves and asmantaka leaves, onions, garlic. One should not eat sour gruel (a thin watery pouriage) or the juice of the tree. One should also give up turnips and beetroots, carrots, kinsuka, forest figs, and white pumpkin. If the twice born persons eat these things, they all become fallen.
(This translation of gr.n~jana seems to be questionable. Capeller dictionary says that it refers to garlic.)
HBV-related quotes:
"According to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, the regulative principles of devotional service compiled by Gopala Bhatta Gosvami do not strictly follow our Vaisnava principles. Actually, Gopala Bhatta Gosvami collected only a summary of the elaborate descriptions of Vaisnava regulative principles from the Hari-bhakti-vilasa. It is Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami's opinion, however, that to follow the Hari-bhakti-vilasa strictly is to actually follow the Vaisnava rituals in perfect order. He claims that the smarta-samaja, which is strictly followed by caste brahmanas, has influenced portions that Gopala Bhatta Gosvami collected from the original Hari-bhakti-vilasa. It is therefore very difficult to find out Vaisnava directions from the book of Gopala Bhatta Gosvami. It is better to consult the commentary made by Sanatana Gosvami himself for the Hari-bhakti-vilasa under the name of Dig-darsini-tika. Some say that the same commentary was compiled by Gopinatha-puja Adhikari, who was engaged in the service of Sri Radha-ramanaji and who happened to be one of the disciples of Gopala Bhatta Gosvami." (CC Madhya 1.35p.)
"Sanatana Gosvami wrote his Vaisnava smrti, Hari-bhakti-vilasa, which was specifically meant for India. In those days, India was more or less following the principle of smarta-vidhi. Srila Sanatana Gosvami had to keep pace with this, and his Hari-bhakti-vilasa was compiled with this in mind." (CC Madhya 23.105)
"This Hari-bhakti-vilasa, also Vaisnava-smrti, that is also imitation of smartaism. It is called smrti. So at least in Europe and America, they will never be able to take all these things. The things should be made shortcut; at the same time, they should be successful. So that is chanting of Hare Krsna maha-mantra, depending on..." (Room Conversation -- July 16, 1973, London)
As we know, Srila Prabhupada was more lenient than his guru and previous acaryas not only in this but also in other cases.
Manu-samhita:
5.5. Garlic, leeks and onions, mushrooms and (all plants), springing from impure (substances), are unfit to be eaten by twice-born men.
5.19. A twice-born man who knowingly eats mushrooms, a village-pig, garlic, a village-cock, onions, or leeks, will become an outcast.

You want to be renounced - associate with renounced people.
you want to be rich - associate with rich people
poor with poor people
you want easy life - you associate with drunkards
you want cheat yoru way through - Krishna send you cheaters as well...
it is all about sadhu sanga....
Srimad-Bhägavatam 5.5.2
Boston, April 28, 1969
"And at least if one percent of the whole population becomes Kåñëa conscious, the whole world will be a different world. There will be..., uh... The world itself will become kingdom of God. Of course, we cannot expect that everyone will accept this philosophy, but we are trying. If some percentage of the population takes this movement seriously, the face of the world will be changed."

What we need is more couples like "Stonehearted" prabhu described.
YES we spiritual movement, YES we want benefit the society, YES to many good things. And then someone comes to us and tells us - you convinced me that KC is the goal of life. 1st thing they see.... I won't go into that.
You do what you preach. Not preach what to do.
All this things we will correct in due course of time. We will establish Varnasrama dharma in this world in due course of time. But who will stand up and take a creadit?
Yah and reg. giving advises about marriage:
if you divorced or never married... and if i'm deciding to get married and seaching for advise...
I DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING YOU KNOW
(even if you are the devootee)
why?
Because I may end up like you....
People who quailfied to teach about different asramas - the once who been there done that sucessfully.
If you want your wife to be nice - what you do - bring her around lady who has nice relationship with her husband and she will learn by example. (same with men)
association is a key. anyway that was the whole point.
association is a key.

This is very limited knowledge of God.
God has only son
God is an old man hanging on a cloud
God gave us only one way out
He is all loving and merciful but if you turn agains him you damned forever...
this is all childish... Why pig has so many children and God managed only 1 child? Why? He did some family planning or what?
All this "springs forth" from the mundane look on God and trying to understand spiritual with mundane mind and senses.
Still this limited philosophical understanding does not cover the greatness of Jesus Christ. So if his followers embrace his teachings wholeheartedly they will end up in ISKCON may be in their next life.
But speaking about God and eating beef it is like pooring water on fire, ain't gonna happen. "Eye for eye and tooth for tooth".

i was looking for text like this for long time. Is there more reference to athenticy of this text?
Does 7th days Adventists propogate vegetarionizm as well?
-
Finally I got all Prabhupada mp3 records - anyone can suggest what mp3 player can hold it?
-
where did you hear this joke
because I just heard it 2 days ago.. were u in NJ?
-
it is a same thing what Prabhupada saying:
husband and wife TOGETHER preaching, chanting, worshipping.
If you ask me what is the problem with divorce. I will tell you 3 reasons
1. Husband does to work one way - wife going her way on 2 different jobs and see each other and talk to kids only during commercial breaks while watching TV.
2. Not enough money comming to household. Because husband is a WHIMP (in many cases) who reads and quotes how wife must serve the husband and meanwhile sends her to JOB from 8-5 and himself not generating income to support family.
3. And of course spiritual differences... i'm not getting into it.
If husband is a WHIMP this forces ladies feeling insecure have to take charge of temples and income in family and managment. From here comes undless debates on women rigths etc.....
But a root cause is man and being head of household he need to zip it from a front not from a side. Provide for family raise children in KC and be responsible.
- ys Subala das
PS. plz don't take my word WHIMP offensivly. I can't find more appropriate word. Prabhupada said - you make a choice and STICK WITH IT. don't be chanchala. I think it is comming from letter to one devotee who was between decisions about his asrama.
-
PS. this is Subala das post BTW.
-
The end results of video games is (talking from experince of playing 4-5 hours a day for couple of years)
1. waste of time
2. you will waste your eye sight (material eyesight) will be looking through world via THICK glasses even though you had good eyesight
3. grow up - last advise
BTW i'm not giving advises to someone else - promary to myself as well.
reg. spiritual games.....
I would think about it.... say 1000 names of visnu game - you have to remember 1000s names and its meaning.... something ilke that would be nice. as educational but playing with bows and arrors (or guns) splitting blood everywhere - if you really like it Krishna will arrange it (in next life you will be with Kalki Avatar and will see lots of blood and strategy) /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Is ISKCON Hindu?
in Spiritual Discussions
Posted
Hindu is a broad definition.
there are aborigines in india who catches the birds and eat it while it is alive - they called hindu also.
And personalities like Ramanujacarya, Shankaracharya etc... you can call them hindus as well... But there is fast ocean between them.
If you want more broad definition of hindu and bharata varsa - it is not a the peice of kaupin which was raped by muslims invaders and english after that. Bharata varsha it is whole earth including all continents.
By Gods arrangements only in India up to the time Prabhupada left for USA - only in India this great principles were still existing due to brahmins and vaishnavas who were kept this traditions. Only because of them Sanatana dharma were kept there.
Prabhupada's goal is to reistablish Sanatana Dharma in a whole world.
And a proof of that you and me talking about it in this forum....
As for external things - if you ask any passing by "hindu" who works in some software company What is Sanatana Dharma is - most of them won't be able to answer what it is and how do you eat it... (if you get my joke)...
Many hindus have no clue what Sanatana Dharma is - and those who can tell you they will quote somehting what they seen in a movie...
On other side you can ask any devotee - even that one who joined 2 days ago and ask him what is Sanatana Dharma is - they will tell you - I'm eternally servant of God, Krishna. Eternally - they won't miss that point even if you wake them up in a middle of the night or catch them in some night club. They may not be able to explain what it is but they know that they eternally servants of Krishna - because Prabhupada puts this on every single page of his book.
And to end on happy note - most furtunate people on this planet are those who took birth in India for they have chance to know it from a birth...
And to answer directly on yoru question - NO ISKCON is here to stay to establish Varnasrama and Sanatana dharma. Person from whom you heard may wanted to say - we not hindus... and do not follow hinduism (because general understanding of hinduism in a west is to worship 33 millions gods and western people can't digest it - becuase of that we say we not hindus and later we explain what it means).
