A Trip to Kedarnath and Badrinath

We planned an LFC trip to Nainital that summer during May 1990 as invited by our younger brother Shri B Janardhanan, IAF, who was the Registrar of Sainic School at Nainital. At that time, I was BM of Meikelnaickenpatti rural branch, Trichy Dist., (1988-92) and booked our tickets in advance with the intention of staying with our brother’s family at least for 10 days.

A Himalayan Journey

gangotri-02

India is a country where both natural and spiritual worlds share a deep and primordial connection. Here, the natural elements like air, fire, earth and water are revered as gods. The most important natural deities are the rivers amongst which the most powerful is the river Ganga. She is a water goddess who descended from the heavens to cleanse the humans of all their sins. She has been a blessing to the hot and crowded plains of the northern India through countless millennia, by creating and replenishing one of the most fertile soils on earth.

A Boat Ride to No Return

sangam-02

My trip to India was very much like my desire to learn TM. It was initiated by my inner guide. I wasn’t thinking of going anywhere. I was enjoying the quietness of a week long retreat in a TM academy in Suffolk. In the middle of one of his brilliant explanations about Maharishi’s knowledge – Alistair, our teacher – added an aside saying he was taking a group to the Kumbha Mela the next February.

Visit to Cave Temple at Thuvakudi, Trichy

cave temple

On Saturday we visited a cave temple very similar to Namakal, Ottakadai (Madurai), and Thirumayam (Pudukottai) in which Lord Ranganatha with many devatas were carved beautifully inside the rock. Garuda can be seen in standing posture. Also a beautiful Narasimhadeva, Hayagriva, and Lakshmi Narayana both in sitting and standing postures. There was a tirtha named Sudarshana Tirtha opposite to the temple.

The Once Grand Yamuna River

For centuries, Hindus crowded the banks of the Yamuna for religious ceremonies. Today, no one can take a dip even on festivals because the river overflows with filth, effluents, dirt and even dead bodies. It is a sorry tale all the way from Haryana to Delhi to Uttar Pradesh, disappointing the religious minded in places like Vrindavan, Mathura and Agra in particular.

Strolling in the City of Time

The Masters of tens of millions of lives live here. They rule from a barrack-like building, set in grounds holding huge masonry structures that look like enormous versions of a child’s geometry set. And, in a way, that is what those edifices are. They were constructed over 275 years ago by Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur, governor of Ujjain.

Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary

There was a massive elephant blocking our way in that bamboo flanked dusty tract. We had stopped the vehicle and waited silently, too numb to respond to a tusker in the wild. But the guard accompanying us into the Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary was unruffled and he simply called out, `O Abhimanyu, make way’. The pachyderm paused and responded by moving into the forest. We watched it and were glad that we saw an elephant. There is another one called Ganesh in the periphery who is pet with the forest guards. Both these animals are tamed and trained by the forest officials to watch out for smugglers of wood and other forest produce.

The Temples of Kathmandu

Kathmandu

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is surely one of the world’s most amazing cities, being endowed with a very large number of ancient monuments, historic temples and other interesting spiritual sights. Here, the presence of Buddhist and Hindu deities are found side by side, and devotees have a rare opportunity to view Vaisnavism in a predominantly Buddhist milieu.
