Just thought of a new resource for you. I get their e-mails, and I have

no idea why I didn't think of this before. Check out

www.vegfamily.com . You should get a lot of good ideas about feeding

your child there, plus a lot of other good information. HTH! Marilyn

Marilyn,

Thank you so much for these resources. We have been on vacation since Tues., so

this email got lost to me.

I will have to find some of these books when we get home (new Books A Million

just opened near us) ;)

Hi Lucy! My 10yo doesn't want to eat meat anymore either--which is

great, as far as I'm concerned! I also can't use peanuts or dairy

though we have a similar diet here. First of all, let me reassure you

that you are NOT alone, and your son WILL thrive!

There are so many resources for vegan families out there it's hard to

know where to start! I know I've seen, but I don't have, at least one

book about " when your child wants to be a vegetarian " . Probably

someone else here can direct you to that one.

Here are my " top picks " for you, from my own library:

Raising Vegan Children in a Non-Vegan World by Erin Pavlina--comes

from the point of already being a vegan parent, but still lots of

helpful information for you on dealing with the " world " and your

son's choice, and some nice recipes.

Raw Kids by Cheryl Stoycoff--Short, readable book about raising a

vegan child. Again from the standpoint of already being a vegan

parent, but that really doesn't matter. Nutritional information,

resources, and recipes.

Disease-Proof Your Child by Joel Fuhrman, MD--Excellent book about

how and why to transition your child to a mostly vegan diet, for

health reasons. Great nutritional information and recipes. My husband

and I actually just went to see Dr. F, and were VERY impressed with

his knowledge and caring for people's health. He's got more books and

DVD's out as well, about the diet/health connection. I have most of

them and they are really informative.

The McDougall Quick and Easy Cookbook--Quick, easy, family friendly

vegan recipes. Dr.McD has a LOT of books and DVD's out about the

diet/health connection, and I have most of them. This book is the one

I go to the most.

The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak--If you miss

macaroni and cheese, Cheez Whiz, fettucine alfredo, or Velveeta, this

recipe book is for you! Vegan alternatives to cheese that are really

tasty!

Any book by Julie Wandling--She has written several easy to read

books about the vegan diet and the family. Written from a Christian

viewpoint, but recipes are not " religious " , nor is health

information. :) These books are full of resources, health

information, and family friendly mostly raw (uncooked) vegan recipes,

as well as practical advice about raising a vegan child.

The websites of the Vegetarian Resource Group and the Physician's

Committee for Responsible Medicine should really be of help to you.

There are also some nice mostly raw vegan recipes on the Hallelujah

Acres website, and a lot more (cooked and raw) at fatfreevegan.com.

Good luck! Marilyn

You're welcome, Cassie! So glad something I said was helpful to you! We are

basically a " flexitarian " family here (mostly veg, occasional meat for

several of us but not all of us). These resources have helped me to plan many

more

veg meals than I was used to preparing, so my family would not complain

anymore that all I made was spagetti! Marilyn

Hi Jo,

Actually, I suppose all cats have " special needs " but mine were

either born deaf or born blind. One of the deaf cats also has some

behavioral issues (we're his fifth--and final--adopting family,

although sometimes my husband loses his temper with Seamus and

threatens otherwise). Four's our limit though. Do you have furry

kids in your family?

I would highly recommend Joel Fuhrman's " Eat to Live " . It is not

entirely vegan or gluten free, but very easily adapted. It is

vegetarian and dairy free. He does allow some egg whites.

Starches/grains of all kinds are restricted, so there are lots of

gluten-free recipes or recipes that are easily adapted.

Focus on fruits, veggies, especially leafy greens, whole grains like

brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, beans, nuts and seeds. You can

get these foods at your grocery store and don't need to rely on

commercial bread products with lots of flours and sugars.

Hi Sally,

WELCOME!

I have just finished reading a book written by Mary-Ann Shearer (The Natural

Way). In it she touches on the coeliac issue, but also gives case histories of

people with various lumps, bumps, tumors, etc that switched not only to

veganism, but more importantly to correct food combinations (this keeps the body

in an alkaline state instead of an acidic one. Acidic metabolism causes all

sorts of health problems!). She also cites case studies of people who have been

told by medical professionals that their only option is surgery. These people

then sought alternatives, some of which ended up with her (she is a

nutritionist) and after helping them through their diet issues, and assisting

them with supervised fasting, they have not needed surgical intervention at all

AND the problems have never recurred as they are eating correctly now.

Have you investigated correct food combining? We have only just begun, two days

ago, we have been vegetarian for about 2 yrs and vegan for about 8 months.

Another excellent book is called " Health Seekers " by Prof. Celene Bernstein.

Both these authors are South African, and with the R/$ exchange rate you should

be able to pick them up at a relatively good price. They both have websites. I

have begun to reason that rather than wait til my body starts breaking down, I

will learn from other peoples' truama and prevent, rather than cure. Food

combining, from what I have read, seems like a very real prevention method and

makes sense to my mind. Anyone else have any feedback on correct food combining?

Great to have you with us, trust you will enjoy it as much as I have. This is

really a lovely bunch of people to be in touch with.

Sincerely

Marlene

Hello Everyone, My name is Sally and I am 59 yrs old. I was diagnosed

with celiac 10 yrs ago. Last year I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes.

Two yrs before that, I was diagnosed with thyroid problems. I have been

trying to stick to a vegetarian/vegan diet, also. I have been seeing an

endocrinologist and we have found a solid mass on my thyroid. I will be

having a needle aspiration done soon to see if it is benign or cancer.

When talking to my dr. she was happy that I was trying a

vegetarian/vegan

diet!!!!!!!! I wanted to introduce myself now and I am going to start

reading past post. Have a GREAT day !!!!! Peace, Sally [:)]

Being a vegan is easier to do than it sounds.

Even Zippy my dachshund follows the same strict diet.

No worries he is healthy at 6 and has more energy than when I rescued

him 4 years ago.

There is allot of groups out here on the web that can help you also.

I have actually relearned to cook healthier.

Only time you can encounter problems as a vegan is when you travel.

You will have to do a little more planning and ask lots of questions.

Use sites like vegguide.org or happycow.com

Both sites are good for anyone Vegetarian, health conscience or vegan

Good luck in your new adventure

If you search the archives for picky eater, you will see lots of tips for

getting veggies into your 4 year old (dips, letting your child choose, sneaking,

Hi. Thanks for letting me join. My name is Natalie. I'm not

vegetarian or vegan, but I have a 4 y/o with PKU. This means no

meat, eggs, dairy, nuts, legumes, most soy/flour products, or

aspartame in her diet. That said, she hates her veggies, and I find

it increasingly difficult to get her to try anything, new or old. I

joined a few groups in the hopes of finding some recipes that are kid-

and family-friendly and can keep the same old veggies interesting

and fresh.

I did join " web only " , so I can search the recipes, ideas, and tips

at my own pace w/out my inbox getting out of control. This isn't to

say I am anti-social, but I prefer to join this way if the group

allows. I look forward to finding new and interesting ideas for my

little one, which should also translate into a little healthier

eating for the rest of us. Thanks, again.

Natalie

P.S. I tried searching the messages for " Thanksgiving " , but there

are a lot of results. Can anyone point to a specific post regarding

favorite dishes served? I can often tweak vegetarian dishes to make

them lower in protein, so I'm not concerned if they contain some of

our " NO " foods. Thanks.

I worked with a woman whose daughter has PKU.  She would make the most kick-butt

vegan dishes for me.  She had put a lot of time into making her daughter foods

that were still interesting in order to keep her on diet.  She had also worked a

lot with PKU adults and told me the tragedy of people going off diet.  So sad.

The funny thing is that you will find that many of our veg recipes are of course

loaded with protein, so our diets were only similar in what they did not

contain.  Certainly you'll be able to find some that are fine on here, but as

understand it you even have to be so careful about veggies since they can have a

lot of protein too.

Good luck!

Hi Karen,

We live in Southern WV, we actually have four houses that are

home for up to 6 kids each in a home setting. We are a level one

facility but don't call it a facility (dosent sound homey) These

houses are real houses very large. There is one in Bluefield, WV one

in Princeton WV one in Beckley WV, and one in Maxwellton, WV My

husband and I work at all four homes right now. We are the relief

staff for the primaries. Come April we will to go the prmary parents

and stay at the Princeton home for all three weeks at a time. I

think that will be better for us. It is no fun packing up every

Monday to head to another home to work. I am at the Beckley home

right now but today will have a changeover with the primaries here

and head to the Bluefield home for a week. This gives the primary

parents their break.

We are very short staffed right now if anyone in the area needs

this type of job. All expenses are paid while your on shift. You

need to pass background checks and drug test ect. before hire. and a

two hour interview :) Yeah longest interview my husband and I have

ever had! They will also hire singles when they can't find couples.

It is a great job though but can be very stressful at times.

OH one word of warning you have to follow the state foodline guide

for children, they already have menues fixed up. So I have to cook

non-vegan meals and add lots of veggies. There is some room for

varience but anyone who works with state agencies knows they have

rules that have to be followed. There is an abundance of fresh fruit

and veggies you just have to provide the other foods on the meal plan

as well.

I must go for now, hope my post was not too long.
