Dear rupa

1. vegetarianism is natural and everything is byproduct of the life

sytyle.

2. As a canadian of indain origin you may be able to lay your hands

on many a tasty dishes made out of the poor spinach and lowly

looking eggplant apart from cabbage, cauliflower and cabbage.

3. As regards weight loss...First thing is to stop worrying about

the weight.

1. take a glass of lukewarm water with a table spoon full of

honey and a few drops of fresh lime first thing in the morning as u

wake up and wash

2. take a 3 km walk each way which is about one hour of work

out.

3. eat curries and plenty of plain yougurt mixed and blended

with water and a pinch of salt.

4. eat chana and soya bean curries

5. remember one thing .... dieting does not help in reducing

the weight...

6. @ 40 eat well and work out.

see after 40 days and we will discuss

Welcome, Andrea. I hope you enjoy our group. It

doesn't matter a bit that you're not yet

vegetarian, but just remember that we don't

discuss eating me*t (of any animal whatsoever) on

this group - and all recipes must be carefully

edited to take out any references to animal flesh

and dead animal products. Milk, dairy and honey

are okay here! :)

I know what you mean about the cat - we have one

that we rescued some seven years ago now and he

now lets us live with him in his house. As reward

for this, he allows us to adore him - on his

terms, of course. Wonderful! (We also have two

beagles, but our relationship with them is more

on equal terms LOL)

Have fun - post often - and enjoy your new way of

eating. It can be quite an adventure!

Best, Pat (Co-Owner with Cindi)

I also wanted to say thank you for allowing me to join your group. I

have been going through some of the recipes and I can't decide where to

start.

Thank you

Thank you for the warm welcome. You know, I haven't met anyone else with my

name in years. It must not be as popular. Some of these names nowadays are

kind of scary.

I have never tried tofu and am looking for a way to maybe spice it up

Hi Lena,

This is a fun, zingy way to use tofu. Oh, and my 4-year old has an adorable

school mate named Lena, a name I also love and would use myself if we were

having more children.

Peng's home-style bean curd

Serves 2

1 teaspoon shaoxing (rice) wine

1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste

1 block (about 1 1/4 pounds) firm bean curd, drained

3 scallions, green parts only

2 fresh red chili peppers, cored and seeded

1 cup peanut or vegetable oil (for deep-fat frying)

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

3 tablespoons black fermented beans, rinsed

1 cup vegetable stock

1/4 teaspoon dark soy sauce

3/4 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water

1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

2 teaspoons chili oil (optional)

1. In a bowl, combine the rice wine and salt. Mix well and set aside.

2. Cut the bean curd into oblong slices, about 1/2-inch thick. Cut the

scallions and chilies thinly into diagonal slices.

3. In a large wok or deep-fat fryer, heat the oil over high heat until it

reaches 350 to 400 degrees on a deep-fat thermometer. Add the bean curd in 3

or 4 batches. Fry until the slices are just tinged with gold; drain and set

aside.

4. Tip the oil out of the wok or pan. Reserve 3 tablespoons. Clean the wok,

then reheat it over high heat until smoke rises. Add the reserved oil and

swirl it around. Add the garlic and chilies and let them sizzle for a few

seconds until fragrant.

5.Add the rice wine and salt mixture, and then add the black beans, still

stirring constantly. Pour in the stock and soy sauce. Add the fried bean

curd and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 3 minutes. Taste for

seasoning and add more salt, if you like.

6. Add the cornstarch mixture and stir as the liquid thickens. Stir in the

scallions. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the sesame oil and chili

oil, if using.

Welcome, Lena. You are going to love it here - so many great and flavorful

recipes. I have not been here too long and am having such a good time cooking

for my family. I am a Grandma and live in a multigenerational household with

my daughter, SIL and 1 year old granddaughter. I do some of the cooking and my

SIL is a Vegan which I thought was going to be impossible - how could one

possibly cook without eggs and cheese? Amazing how many good things I can

cook that are Vegan and the rest of the family enjoy as well. Not everything

we cook is Vegan because we are all different in our eating.

It is a lot of fun to try new things.

Let us know how you do.

Thank you for the warm welcome, too. This is such a nice bunch. I have

found lots of good recipes to try. I am hoping to get a chance this to do

that this weekend.

What has been your favorite vegan recipe? This may be a dumb question but

what is the big difference between being vegetarian and vegan?

Hi Sue,

Welcome to vegan and gluten free. You'll fine plenty of recipes here

for veggies, and plenty that use herbs. I love to grow vegetables and

herbs too. It's a great feeling to go out and pick something really

fresh out of the garden to eat.

If you have any great recipes, we would love you to share them. All

recipes posted here are added to our files:

Look in " ***Recipes Posted to VGF*** " and you'll find them all

neatly filed away in their categories. We have thousands of recipes

.... it's like an enormous recipe book. If there's anything you can't

find, just ask.

We were given a heap of cucumbers this year and I made some bread and

butter pickles from some of them. They were so nice that they only

lasted a few weeks.

I hope you enjoy being a member here,

Kim. in Australia :)

Hi....first of all I am sorry you are having to battle these health

issues....second, I think the best idea would be to check with your

health care professional, doctor or dietician and ask one or both

of them to advise you on the best dietary regime to follow. I hope

you can get all of the help you need soon. Bless your heart.....

good luck!

Hi everyone,

I have been enjoying your recipes and am trying to incorporate a

vegetarian lifestyle. I have Hashimoto's disease (thyroid disease) and

chronic fatigue. Are there diet recommendations for these?

Thank you.

Heavens Andy - whereabouts are you eating? I've been vegetarian for 40

years and vegan for over a year and haven't come across any bland

veggie food here. Perhaps you should head up here to Scotland :-) Look

in the files here and you'll certainly find plenty of excellent tried

and true recipes to tempt your taste buds.

So Christie, is Scotch food really different from English food? I

have visited England a couple of times (not Scotland) and I tend to

agree with Andy....pretty bland stuff unless you find Indian/Pakistani

or Indonesian food.

Of course, this does not matter when you are able to cook and have all

these great selections!

Scottish food (Scotch is the whisky, LOL) is definitely not the best,

but veggie food here and in Britain generally has been influenced by

so many different cultures that there is absolutely no excuse to eat

bland food. I don't eat in fast food places so I cannot speak for

them, but then I rarely eat in expensive places either and I can

honestly say that I have never had any bland veggie food over here

since the 60s, when it was a lot more unusual to be vegetarian. There

are many veggie or veggie friendly restaurants in Edinburgh and I've

found the same wherever I've gone in Scotland.

hmmmm... have to speak for americans here ... that would be scotch tape and

scotch to

drink but I think it would be Scottish food .... but I have no idea if it's

bland or not -- they

have something they like to make w/ pig intestines, I think ... that alone would

turn me

veggie...

I guess you mean haggis, Joyce, generally made using sheep rather than

pig. I have to admit that both the look and concept of haggis is pretty

revolting, however the vegetarian version tastes really good and it is

encased in plastic rather than sheep's stomach.

yes! haggis! I have a Scotch :-) friend who'd told me about it and I didn't

remember that it

was sheep not pig ... so have you got a recipe for vegetarian haggis, and is it

hard to digest

the plastic?? or is it that new made from corn biodegradable stuff?? (just

kidding, except

about whether you have a recipe for it...)
