I don't have the " perfect " recipe for vegan pizza, but it's close enough

for me.

Get the store crusts (beware of honey in some of them). Spread Tofutti's

Better 'n Cream Cheese on the crust. Add pizza sauce and toppings (I like

black olives and mushrooms) and bake at 350 for about 10 minutes. I'ts

not " real " pizza, but it's close - especially if you haven't had real

cheese in a while.

thanks for the idea! I'll have to give it a try. from what i

understand, a good vegan cheese substitute is hard to come by. i've

got the " uncheese cookbook " . i really should try some of the

recipes...i'm also a lazy vegan wannabe.

Your best source of protein are nuts and seeds. They are also high in Vitamins

adn minerals.!!!

Obviously, beans! :-) But in addition, you can choose whole grains,

bean sprouts, broccoli (33% of its calories are from protein),

cauliflower, romaine lettuce, spinach, lentils, tofu, nuts, etc.

Basically, as long as you eat a wide variety of foods, and enough of

them, you will probably get enough protein, but beans are important,

especially if you decide not to consume eggs or dairy.

Hi

Beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and tofu, tempeh etc. are all good sources of

protein. Rice, bread etc. also contain fair amounts of protein. It is hard to

go short on protein if you are eating enough calories.

Hi Rebecca ;=)

Good for you for keeping to such a healthy regime - you are to be

congratulated. As for falling off any diet (yours being the Fuhrman diet), it's

not

much use being on a diet that you hate cuz you just fall of it, as you say *lol*

And that means you can't lose weight cuz you just fall back into at least some

of your old eating habits.

There are many good diets out there, but what they all amount to is *eating

fewer calories*. Truly. There's no other way. No matter what they say. If you

lose quickly on one diet it's either because you are eating fewer calories or

you are losing fluid from your body because of the things you are and are not

eating. Sooner or later, for real weight loss, it all comes down to eating

less;=)

For many of us, a successful diet is cutting back on the fat (not cutting it

oout

completely, just cutting it down to a bare minimum) or oil in the cooking and,

and I must remind you/us all of this, *eating smaller portions*. It works ;=)

About eating fish: vegans do not eat fish, or else they wouldn't be vegans.

(Neither do vegetarians of course - but your query was about vegans.) Some

doctors and dieticians who do not understand about vegetarianism and

veganism often suggest eating fish or something like that. A vegan or

vegetarian diet should present no problems provided you eat a balanced diet

- all the good vitamins and minerals etc. If you think you're not doing this,

then

get a really good vitamin-mineral supplement. If you are worried about B12,

then get B12 tablets etc. Some of us also use nutritional yeast. And, while I'm

on the subject of taking things 'extra' - I swear by flax seed, ground daily and

added to, say, your breakfast cereal, or, if that's too fiddly (but it tastes

wonderful!), flax oil, available at your health food store - can be put on

salads

or added to breakfast smoothies.

Enough right now. I'm sure others on this list will have good ideas for you.

Thanks so much for introducing yourself. Welcome, again, tot he list!

Pat ;=)

Pat-I'm the first to point out that vegans nor

vegetarians don't eat fish (or any other flesh for

that matter...tee hee) as it's a subject that's come

up and I've read about quite a few times. To clarify,

the reason I was asking is that I have an aquaintance

who was vegan for ethical reasons and was told by her

dr that she has a condition that can only be helped by

eating fish. It was never explained to me what the

condition was or what fish has in it that is helping

it, so I was curious to know if anyone else knew this.

I do take supplements (by Dr Fuhrman coincidentally)

that are vegan and have B12. Thanks for the pointers

on the flax, the dogs get oil in their food and I need

to start adding it to mine, they get taken care of

better than anyone else around here....lol. Anyhow,

any breakfast smoothie ideas are welcomed, the only I

know how to make is with soy/rice milk, bananas and

strawberries, good but it gets boring. Anyhow thanks

for welcoming me I'm so glad to be here!

I haven't a clue - and I imagine the doc should have told her what her

condition was too! :=( I'll try to find out what condition that would be that

would

suggest to a medic that one must start eating :=( f*sh, poor little critters.

Btw, I think there are some breakfast or other smoothies on the webpage in

the Files section. We used to mix up a mad concoction of soy milk, banana,

any other fruit on hand or orange juice, blackstrap molasses, wheat germ,

ground flax seed - and anything else we fancied ;=) It wasn't exactly a

gourmet treat, but it was tasty and nutritious. For some reason we have

stopped doing that (no flax seed in the house at present?) and we miss it.

Back to the regime tomorrow - it was a huge kickstart for the day ;=)

Best,

Pat ;=)

Hello Vanessa,

Thank you for the welcome. I notice from your profile that you are

in Michigan. Is there a large vegetarian population there?

Hello Dagmara!

There doesn't seem to be many vegetarians around here. I have never met another vegetarian from these parts . They sell a limited selection of vegetarian ready to microwave meals in the stores here, but that's about it. I would like to start an organization here to raise awarness about the vegan cause one day.
