Tons of info on google about lechithin. From the Rodale book, Nature's Medicines: lecithin and choline Imagine a supplement that could actually restore memory. Could we use it to reverse some of the memory loss that comes with aging? What if it could also enhance our ability to think? The very thought is enough to make your head spin. Unfortunately, we’re not quite there yet, but research into the possibilities for lecithin has touched off some alluring expectations. *(actually we are there now. Harvard studies on choline intake of three grams showed a significant increase in memory especially short term memory) The supplement that’s getting all this heady attention would seem, at first glance, to be a very unlikely candidate. Many of its effects have a lot more to do with digestion than with brain function. Yet there are components of lecithin that seem to play a critical role in nerve function—and our brains, of course, are nothing more or less than elaborate agglomerations of busy nerves making interesting connections with each other. The Great Emulsifier To see lecithin’s action up close, put a chocolate bar in the freezer. When you take it out some time later, you’ll notice that the whole bar is tinged with white. You can chalk up that transformation to lecithin. Derived from soybeans and egg yolks, lecithin is often added to foods such as chocolate, cheese, margarine, and salad dressings. In these foods, it acts as an emulsifier, which simply means that it helps mix fats with water and keeps them from separating. When the chocolate bar is frozen, the lecithin-fat interaction falls apart. The fat rises to the surface, giving the candy that whitish tinge. Lecithin forms naturally in all living cells of the body, and just as it does in food, it acts as an emulsifier. It helps keep fatty substances in bile, which is essentially a kind of juice produced by your liver. When lecithin is doing all it should, it also eases digestion and helps your body absorb valuable nutrients. Lecithin also helps to maintain the structural integrity of cells, says Steven Zeisel, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of nutrition at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. "Without lecithin, nothing would survive, because you wouldn’t be able to separate the various compartments within cells, nor would you be able to separate cells from each other." It also serves as a source of messengers used to help control blood pressure and regulate insulin, the all-important hormone that helps unlock cells so that blood sugar can be absorbed for energy. Without lecithin- derived messengers helping to coordinate these activities, many cells would be at a loss about what to do. "You wouldn’t have the ability to send proper signals," notes Dr. Zeisel. "Everything would grind to a halt." None of those admirable activities suggests a link between lecithin and brain power, however. For that, we have to look at one component of lecithin—a substance called choline. The Choline Connection Choline is a nutrient that’s essential for helping to turn fat into energy within the liver. Although it’s a component of lecithin, it’s also sold separately as a supplement. In addition to the way it helps the liver deal with fat, choline has another function: It helps transmit nerve impulses in the brain. That transmission process isn’t quite as straightforward as carrying cellular e-mail from one address to another. Instead, choline is a building block of another chemical, acetylcholine, that actually carries messages between nerve cells. The brain uses acetylcholine for many purposes, including controlling memory, heart rate, and sweating, according to Dr. Zeisel. SUPPLEMENTSNAPSHOT Lecithin and Choline May help: Liver disorders, gallstones, heart disease, memory loss, depression, stress, and high cholesterol. Good food sources: Soybeans, peanuts, and wheat germ; also available as an additive in chocolate, margarine, salad dressing, and cheese. Cautions and possible side effects: Large doses of lecithin may cause upset stomach, sweating, salivation, and loss of appetite. Do not take doses of choline above 3.5 grams (equivalent to 23 grams of PC) without medical supervision. Regular supplementation with choline can cause a fishy body odor. Tantalized by the possibility that choline could help memory, researchers have been investigating the link. To date, they’ve found that acetylcholine is in short supply among some people who have neurological disorders, but that doesn’t prove that more acetylcholine produces better brain function. Related research has led to a more promising path. Researchers have run across another chemical in lecithin called phosphatidylserine (PS). The scientists have found that PS, a building block for brain cells, seems to have a particularly beneficial effect on the production and release of the chemicals that transmit messages, according to Parris Kidd, Ph.D., a biomedical consultant in Berkeley, California, and author of Phosphatidylserine: The Nutrient Building Block That Accelerates All Brain Functions and Counters Alzheimer’s. In fact, PS is the single best means for conserving memory and other higher brain functions as we age, says Dr. Kidd. In studies, PS has been shown to improve the quality of life for people with declining brain function. It improves function in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s and counteracts some of the age-related memory loss among people who don’t have Alzheimer’s. According to Dr. Kidd, it also has some benefits that go beyond memory function: helping people cope with stress and, in some individuals, helping to alleviate depression. "PS seems to have a global effect on brain functions," he says. "It helps memory, learning and concentration, mood, and daily rhythms. It seems to have a general revitalizing effect on the brain." The type of PS that’s been shown to work on memory is derived from bovine brain, says Alan Gaby, M.D., professor of nutrition at Bastyr University in Bothell, Washington. A soy-based PS is being tested, but the chemical structure is a little different, so we can’t assume that its effects are the same, says Dr. Gaby. So far, it has not been shown to be effective, he says. Lecithin in the Liver Meanwhile, back in the digestive area, researchers can pinpoint many of lecithin’s benefits when it comes to transporting valuable resources from place to place in our bodies. We are constantly secreting lecithin into our bile, says Dr. Zeisel, and that helps enzymes mix with fat so that the fat is digested. The liver exports fat. To do that, it must wrap the fat in an envelope containing lecithin and certain proteins. When lecithin is unavailable, no envelope can be made, and fat accumulates in the liver. Liver cells low in lecithin fill up with fat and then die. "Humans who are fed intravenously with solutions that lack lecithin and choline start to have liver cell death," says Dr. Zeisel. "This can be reversed when you give them a lecithin or choline supplement." One form of choline, phosphatidylcholine (PC), seems to be particularly beneficial to the liver. In clinical studies, PC helped with alcoholic liver damage, cirrhosis, viral liver damage, and drug-induced liver damage. Animal research showed that PC supplementation was superior to any other treatment for alcohol-induced liver damage and cirrhosis. PC is found in small amounts in most lecithin supplements. Greater concentrations are available in supplements labeled PC or Leci-PC. Closely related to the way lecithin benefits the liver is the way it helps to prevent gallstones. The lecithin has a blending effect on bile salts and bile components. Without lecithin, the proteins in bile would separate out and form gallstones, says Dr. Zeisel. Should You Supplement? The average adult diet in the United States provides 400 to 900 milligrams of choline a day. According to Dr. Zeisel, that’s enough to meet your basic needs. If you take more, there’s a chance that you might get some additional benefits, but that hasn’t been definitely proven. According to Dr. Kidd, lecithin offers safe nutritional support for energy and overall well-being. Supplements with additional PS benefit memory, and those with added PC benefit liver function and digestion, he says. Lecithin is available in tablets or granules. Granular lecithin can be added to soups, casseroles, milkshakes, and other foods. You can also get choline in tablet form, but there’s a drawback to taking it this way. It can give you a bad case of B.O. if you take it on a regular basis, because choline breaks down into a fishy-smelling compound in the small intestine. Lecithin, on the other hand, doesn’t cause an odor because it is absorbed before releasing choline. *me

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati's opinion on women and sannyasa

How to know if that power and authority is real or assumed? Personally, I see no need to add or subtract from the basics that Prabhupada has laid out. Now as we attempt to apply those there will be some adjustments some will have to make to harmonize with our external lives. There are many more advanced devotees to receive such siksa from. But I see no need for any changes in temple life beyond the allowances he has already given. Change for change sake has the devil's fingerprint stamped on it. Doesn't directly affect me as I have shown an in ability to even adhere to the basics but it would be nice to keep Prabhupada's established ways intact. -
like something from the Kamasutra's chapter on how to seduce another man's wife.

Gauracandra's sounds like the thing to do along with guest's on waiting it out. Along those lines clove oil applied directing on the trouble area works also. Eye dropper here as well. But it needs to be done several times throughout the day. But don't worry young people out there, the miseries that come with this body will soon fade. The bad news is worse one's will becoming to take their place. It comes down to making the best use of a bad bargain. Thank God we have attained the human form in which we have the chance to do something about all this. Hare Krsna

The difference (true and less true followers?) - Part 2
theist replied to anadi's topic in Spiritual Discussions
Oh so he gazed at Maya. Where was he before he gazed? Prabhupada said we were generated from the Brahman, Krsna's effulgence, so that's good enough for me. You like to quote Jaiva Dharma. I haven't read it in a long time but doesn't Bhaktivinode say the same thing. Some as parikara's straight into a certain pasttime in either Vraja or Vaikuntha and some from the effulgence of Maha-Vishnu? Very likely I am remembering it wrong. I admit to not understanding well. I do remember also having some doubts on it. Didn't he also say in that book that to really understand the answer to this question one must go there? Maybe anadi knows and can straighten me out if I am wrong. -
The difference (true and less true followers?) - Part 2

I won't get very far into this topic but you seem to dismiss the idea that duality exists within one's own conceptions. I am just curious as to where you think then that the duality conception does exist. And as to the jiva falling from the spiritual world you must know that the brahmajyoti is also the spiritual world. Here is a quote from Prabhupada that we can consider. Now we are generated from the all pervading Brahman. So how can we "fall" away from that which is all pervading? By falling into a slumber of forgetfullness of our actual surroundings, that's how. We tend to think of falling as something like falling off a mountain and being carried to a lower realm by gravity. I think it is more like falling asleep which does not involvement movement directly but movement of conciousness. In this case one of falling unconscious to our true self and in which we then start to identify with a myriad of different dream identities. I hear three distinct theories being propagated by Gaudiya Vedantist. Fell from rasa, fell from Brahman or began in the material sphere. There may even be more. The starting off in matter I reject outright. The others Prabhupada said not to worry much about. So I guess I have said my piece. Jiv Jago may we all -
I have heard this analogy. A room that has not been used for along time may gather very much dust. This dust becomes a great problem to the sweeper who starts to clean it away because it flys up everywhere, interfering with sight and breath. But the only way to solve the problem is to keep sweeping. Eventually and gradually the room will become from from the dust altogether. The dust was not recognized as a problem until one started to sweep, so things may appear to get worse before they get better. The clearing stage in chanting is like this right? I mean it took the maha-mantra to show me what an a__hole I have become. But this is necessary to develop a contrite and humble heart before the Lord. Now if we can tolerate the turmoil until the air clears, then we will be able to see ourselves and the Lord in a true light. As hard as it may seem there really is no sane alternative but to continue on.

I booked marked it for times when I just need someone dumber than me to laugh at. The depressing thing is I have to go out of my way to find such people. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Britney Spears "been into a lot of Indian spiritual religions."
theist replied to a topic in World Review
But I also remember the Times of India would almost always have a picture of scantily clad Britney Spears on their second page. -
paztriot, I remember this one Darwian award winner from Africa. He paid someone, a witch doctor, I guess to make him invulnerable to gunshots. Well after the herbs and incantations were done he wanted to test it to see if it was effective. So he had a friend shoot at him. Well he died. Poor guy didn't even get his $ back. I guess there is a little Hiranakasipu in all of us. lol

just Westerners, anyone who shows more of some of Krsna's opulences becomes naturally attractive to us. -

From within yourself. A man is sitting in a room with others. He begins to daydream about being in a celestial pond with 20 heavenly damsels. So I wonder where he is really,in the room or in the dream? The dream is not in the room to be experienced by others. They don't see the celestial pond or the damsels, yet he is in the room dreaming so intently he has forgotten his real surroundings. Ever hear the common phrase "fell into a dream"? -
I love thes dumb criminal reports as well as the Darwian Awards. I got this from Jay Leno's show last week. Yeah I know. Anyway this guy goes in to rob a liquor store. And after he got the money he told the cashier to give him a bottle of some liquor also. The clerk refused saying he didn't look old enough to drink. The stupid and frustrated crook then took out his ID and gave it to the clerk to prove he was old enough. The clerk wrote down the info and gave it to the police who arrested the stupid robber later at his home.

Yes, it seems made up religion is always more popular than the real thing in this world.

Clang clang CLANG!!! nectar huh? Whomp whomp WHOMP!!! Oh, I'm in bliss now, nectar. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Yeah but you know what I mean Priitaa, they are not meant to drown out the Holy Names. I used to hide them(whompers) at the small temple I would visit. But,alas, they were always found. I have heard that about Mozart. Sound is most powerful we know.

has taken birth into those animal forms. Someone is obviously there. The question is who and what is his nature.
-
I would even think the opposite effect may be attained. That is a kirtana were every third person is banging loudly on a pair of kartals or worse yet whompers. So loud you can't even hear the holy names, just some disjointed clanging banging roar of frenetic energy. The effect may be headache, confusion, agitation, hearing loss and some form of aparadha to the names of God. Oh oh, sounds like someone has found an outlet for a pet peeve. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Trees, so magnanimous and yet under appreciated. ________ Oranges have the highest level of antioxidants of all fruit. ONE EXTRA serving of citrus a day — on top of the recommended five daily servings of fruit and vegetables —could also reduce the risk of a stroke by 19 percent. “Citrus fruits...protect the body through their antioxidant properties and by strengthening the immune system, inhibiting tumor growth and normalizing tumor cells,” CSIRO researcher Katrine Baghurst said in a statement. The Australian study, which was based on 48 international studies on the health benefits of citrus fruits, also found “convincing evidence” that citrus could reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetes. Baghurst said oranges have the highest level of antioxidants of all fruit, with more than 170 different phytochemicals, including more than 60 flavonoids shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and blood clot inhibiting properties.

Yeah I have read it described as a day of fasting silenceand meditating on the five holy teachers. That is all i know so far.

Haribol Myra, No need. Everyone is present already in Krsna's form. We don't worship any demigods separately from Krsna. Other's are better to address this. I don't really have an offical altar at my home. I do like to offer some simple things like fruit flowers juice etc. to the Lord's pictures. But my lifestyle is so scattered I'm afraid to make it too much an offical/formal part of my practice because I have a hard time following through on things. I like to think of a day when it will just be common Christian practice to offer fruit flowers water and juices etc. to a picture of Mary and Christ, and then chant some prayers and Their names on beads as They hopefully accept our offering. This would be an advancement in Bhakti-yoga practice. Instead of just asking God to give us bread we can ask God to please accept some from us. Kinda like offering a candle to the Sun, or holy river water to the Ganges. I am hoping to see more pictures of Christ and Krsna in the same frame. I have seen one. Christ preaching as a mind bubble shows him thinking of Krsna. I think Prthaa may have it on her site. I know I have seen it on another of Prabhupada's disciples disciples site, Siddha's. Ultimately there are some distinct rules on how to prepare an altar which I don't know, as far as which forms go together etc. Sometimes I like to read Krsna book to Srila Prabhupad or Lord Caitanya in Their picture manifestations. Place a flower before them and read a chapter. I find it nice. Praise Christ Hare Krsna

Ganesh, Hanuman, Garuda are all venerated and associated with hinduism. But please forgive me for being an ignoramus.
