  1. I do not understand why one should try to convince Christians and Muslims that cremation is good. After all, burial is a ritual which is a part of their religion. Why should they accept that cremation is better than burial?
  2. I agree that the domination of one sex over another is bad. But what I was trying to say is that the question how the world would have been had it been female dominated, is hypothetical. We know that the world has been male dominated. We also know that there is so much of hate in the world. But we do not have any statistical data to claim that there will be more peace in the female dominated world. I am not saying that it is impossible. May be that the female dominated world will be more peaceful or may be it will not be. We just don't know.
  3. I have read in Bhagvatam that yogis can leave a body and enter another and can come back to the first body if they so desire.
  4. Narayanidd ji, You have given reference to show that the knowledge of weapons was very high. How did that knowledge get lost over the period of time? Why didn't the knowledge was transferred from one generation to the next?
  5. These statistics do not prove your point. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif It is true that there are more mails in jails than females. (Wow, it is a rhyme. /images/graemlins/smile.gif) But can't it be because still there are more mails who are outgoing?
  6. Like Hinduism, Buddhism also believes in cycles of creation and destruction over great periods of time. According to Buddhism, what will happen in the next round of creation depends on the collective action and collective desire of all the beings in the current round of creation. It comes from the Buddhist teaching that all desire (human intent) is what sets the world in motion. It is said that Buddha once said, "And there will be a time when the Earth turns hot, with two Suns, and then oceans depths drop to that of the height of a man, to knee-high, to ankle-deep, and then all water is gone with "several Suns" in the sky burning away the earth.
  7. when you accept scriptues as real history, i would tell which chapter of bhagavatam talks about relativity. Fine, don't tell.
  8. Mahabharata, Ramayana, Purana etc. can be termed as mere stories. I am not saying that these can't talk about real incidents. But are there stronger evidences for the knwledge of science in ancient India?
  9. Why do you think that there would be less war in female dominated society? Do you have any statistics to support your claim?
  10. read srimadh bhagavatam and you will see that the theory of relativity was known to the vedic people Which verses in Bhagvatam show this?
  11. I want to know about the knowledge of science and technology in ancient India. What exactly do we mean by ancient India? For the purpose of this thread, let me define ancient India as India before British came here. It is very difficult to be unbiased in such topics. There are people who will interprete the ancient writings and the archaeological findings to prove that Indians were very advanced in the knowledge of science, even if that interpretation is very far-fetched. On the other hand, there are people who will outright reject any claim that ancient Indians had good knowledge of science; they will interprete the same writings and the same findings in entrirely different way. So, I would like as many views as I can get on this topic. If you think that Indians were advanced in scientific knowledge, then post whatever evidence you have; post the relevant writings from ancient books, post the details of any relics or post anything that supports your view. If somebody makes post trying to show the scientific knowledge of ancient Indians and you find that the "facts" mentioned in the post are wrong or the interpretation is not correct, then please provide your counter-arguments too. Thank you.
  12. Some people forcibly try to interprete Quran to show that it is highly scientific. There was a thread in this forum in which this was discussed. I will find it and post here.
  13. Do not use the same logo as living entity is using. Otherwise it will confuse other posters. Living Entiry, Please do not tell Enlightened where you got that picture from. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
  14. Sorry, duplicate post. /images/graemlins/frown.gif
  15. number: 1234567900987654321 You are right. I do not know why, but earlier whenever I looked at the number, I unconsciously supplied the digit 8 after the digit 7, though 9 comes in the number after 7. This time also, my eyes (or is it brain?) might have cheated me the same way, if you had not made some of digits in bold font.
  16. The product is still a palindrome if n = 10. 1234567900987654321 is a palindrome. The product is not a palindrome if n = 11.
  17. As you have mentioned, the sqaure of 111,111,111 is 12,345,678,987,654,321 which is a palindrome. You take a numbers in which each digit is 1 and find the square of the number. The sqaure of 1 is 1 which is a palindrome (any string having only one character is, by definition, a palindrome) The square of 11 is 121, again a palindrome. Keep doing that. You will find that this pattern ultimately stops. Can you find out when it stops? To put the question more formally:- Take a number in which there is no digit other than 1 and the number of digits is n. Find the smallest value of n for which the square of the number is not a palindrome.
  18. I agree with the quote you have provided. But I just wanted to share a misunderstanding regarding free-thinking that I have foound. Many people think that just because they say something which is contradictory to what majority believe in, then they are free thinkers.
  19. I have seen the plight of these poor people very closely. There was a time when I had accute money problem. I used to sleep in bus stands or on road sides and used to be mostly hungry. I never begged. I used to see many other poor people around. I used to feel a lot to help them, but I could not because I did not have money to help them. But now that I have, I never say no to those who beg me for food. But there is one aspect of my nature which I find very odd which will be clear from the following incident. I was once in Chennai railway station. My cousin was with me. My cousin has the habit of laughing at those who help poor people. I saw something very pathetic there. Some people were drinking fruit juices and throwing the empty container in dust bins. Some poor children were picking up those containers to see if anything was left. Some people were eating foods and throwing the left-overs in dust bins. These children were eating those left-overs. I felt like giving food to them, but I did not want to be made fun of by my cousin. Then the train for which we were waiting came. My cousin and I went inside the train. The train had to stop there for one hour. I told my cousin that I wanted to buy some chocolates. I came out. I bought and gave food to these children. I also bought some chocolates and came back in the train. (Actually, buying chocolates was just an excuse). I still wonder over this incident. I do not think I was doing anything bad in giving food to those children. But, why did I try to hide it from my cousin? Why did I have to make an excuse that I wanted to buy chocolates? I had to make that excuse simply because I did not want to be made fun of. I do not know what this says about my nature. May be this is ego. It is possible that there are many people who want to help poor but they do not because they keep thinking, "What will others say?" Though, in reality, we should feel happy that we are feeding poor people.
  20. You are right. Avinash and Animesh are the same person.
  21. Let there be two positive numbers x and y. Let z = x + y Calculate the sum of digits in x. Keep doing it till you get a single digit (the same you did to the multiples of 9). Do the same with y. Now you have two digits. Add the two digits. If you get a two digit figure, then add them to get a single digit. You will find that this is the sum of digits of z. Example: Let x = 155 (sum of digits = 11, sum of digits of 11 = 2) y = 75 (sum of digits = 12, sum of digits of 12 = 3) z = 155 + 75 = 230 (sum of digits = 5 which is same as 2 + 3, calculated above). Now I will explain why the sum of digits of any multiple of 9 is 9. The sum of digits of 10 is 1. 9 is 1 less than 10 and 0 is 1 less than 1 (sum of digits of 10). So, in this way 9 behaves somewhat like 0. You multiply any number to 0, you get 0. Similarly, you multiply any number to 9, you will get a no. whose sum of digits is 9. You add 0 to any number, that number is not changed. Similarly, you add 9 to any number, the sum of digits of that number is not changed. Example: 35 + 9 = 44 Sum of digits of 35 = 8 Sum of digits of 44 = 8 I talked about positive numbers. What about negative ones? We know that adding zero to any number does not change the number. We have found a similarity between 0 and 9. So, if you have a negative number, then add keep adding 9 to it till you get a positive number. In other words, add a multiple of 9 to get a +ve no. Then you will find that it shows the behaviour I have described for positive numbers above. Example: 34 - 14 = 20 34 - 14 is same as 34 + (-14). 34 is already a +ve no. -14 is a -ve no. -14 + 9*2 = -14 + 18 = 4 (+ve) Instead of doing 34 + (-14), let us do 34 + 4. We get 38. Sum of digits = 11. Sum of digits of 11 = 2. Sum of digits of 20 (34 - 14) is also 2. Now let us do the reverse i.e. 14 - 34 We get -20 14 - 34 = 14 + (-34) 14 is +ve and -34 is -ve. -34 + 9*4 = -34 + 36 = 2 Instead of 14 + (-34), let us do 14 + 2. We get 16. Sum of digits = 7 14 - 34 = -20 (-ve) -20 + 3*9 = -20 + 27 = 7 So, both are 7. I have described here addition and subtraction. You will find such kind of behaviour holding true for multiplication and division also. Of course, in case of division, the division must finish. The result can be fraction but we must know the exact digits after decimal. Example: 25 * 3 = 75 Sum of digits of 25 = 7 7 * 3 = 21, sum of digits = 3 Sum of digits of 75 = 12, again sum of digits = 3 Example: 17/2 = 8.5 Sum of digits of 17 = 8 8/2 = 4 Sum of digits of 8.5 = 8 + 5 = 13, whose sum of digits = 4
  22. Take a positive integer. If it has more than one digit, then add the digits. If the resule again has more than one digit, then again add the digits. Keep doing that till you get a single digit number. Let as call that digit as d. Take any two positive integers. Call the larger as X and the smaller as Y. Let diff = X-Y d of diff = (d of X) - (d of Y) if d of X is not equal to d of Y Otherwise d of diff = 9 Try it with any combinations of X and Y. It works.
  23. There are many who believe in God and are not good. So, why is it not possible for there to be people who do not believe in God but are good?
  24. I decided to revive this thread because I realized that this thread will proceed to a point which has relevance to free will.
