  1. Retraction BY: LALITA MADHAVA DEVI DASI Apr 3, BATTLEBORO, VERMONT, USA (SUN) — During the past several days since my article, " Garuda dasa's New Gita Translation " (which was written at Garuda Prabhu's request) was published, I have received letters and phone calls emphatically calling for me to retract it in light of disturbing information that has recently surfaced. I was not aware of this information at the time I wrote the article, and thus I now find myself in a most awkward and difficult position. In response to those requests from Vaishnavas, and under mounting pressure in which my own personal integrity is being called into question, I will say the following: I am not a "ritvik" and I consider ritvik-vada to be a philosophical deviation. I wholeheartedly believe in the principle of disciplic succession and therefore I continue to believe that it is appropriate for devotees in the disciplic succession following Srila Prabhupada to write books - provided their character and conduct are beyond reproach. However, I now regret publicly calling Krishna dasa on the carpet in an impassioned personal defense of Garuda Prabhu, and accusing him of being ignorant and ill-informed with regard to matters of Garuda's integrity, character and qualities. Unfortunately, it is I who seem to have been ill-informed.
  2. Thanks for reminding, clarifying and shedding real light to this post. In this case, stem cell science, the term hybrid is being used, as, "hybrid embryo is a mixture of both human and animal tissue". Inother words, stem cell science is based upon using human embryos because anything else wouldn't work for human organism. The purpose of stem cell science is to use embryonic stem cells to study different disease processes which are so far incurable, such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Motor Neurone Disease. Again thanks for always adding so much wisdom.
  3. Could be that people are still having a hard time to understand what is the soul. Devotee: “Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe him as amazing and some hear of him as amazing, while others, even after hearing about him, do not understand him at all.” Prabhupāda: Hear about the soul, for the general people, it is amazing. Still, in the modern society, which is so proud of scientific advancement, so far soul is concerned, it is amazement. Nobody understands, still. And those who are hearing about the existence of soul, some of us also in amazement. It is a mysterious thing. And even after hearing… Just like some student. There are many students, they are reading Bhagavad-gītā, which confirms from the very beginning the existence of soul, but still, Bhagavad-gītā they are reading daily, they cannot understand what is soul. Amazement. To understand about soul is amazement. To understand about God is amazement. So Vedic injunction is therefore that if you are at all serious to understand tad vijñānam, that science, transcendental science… Tad vijñānārthaṁ sa gurum evābhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. The Veda says, “Then you must find out a bona fide spiritual master.” Tad vijñānārtham, if you are seriously interested. Bhagavad-gītā 2.27-38 by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda Los Angeles, December 11, 1968
  4. Rust to fertilize food price surge By F William Engdahl Apr 4, 2008 A deadly fungus, known as Ug99, which kills wheat, has likely spread to Pakistan from Africa, according to reports in the British New Scientist. If true, that threatens the vital Asian bread basket, including the Punjab region. The spread of the deadly virus, stem rust, against which an effective fungicide does not exist, comes as world grain stocks reach the lowest in four decades and government subsidized bio-ethanol production, especially in the United States, Brazil and the European Union, are taking land out of food production at alarming rates. Stem rust is the worst of three rusts that afflict wheat plants. The fungus grows primarily in the stems, plugging the vascular system so carbohydrates can't get from the leaves to the grain, which... full article Asia Times
  5. Thanks Indulekhadasi, yes, if we assume that connecting with the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna is our original real life full of bliss and knowledge this question is relevant, why people are not lining up to become connected with our eternal life full of transcendental happiness and spiritual joy? Why there're no temples in Indiana and everywhere else Vaishnava temples are dwindling? Isn't Lord Brahma's sampradaya a fully functioning powerhouse to immediately connect us with Lord Krishna's eternal pastimes? However, as we lately read so often, if the Vaishnava institutions preach themselves that even Lord Brahma is falling down and we don't even originate from Vaikuntha, how should it be possible that people consider that there's genuine spirituality in the temples? As soon you present genuine spirituality there're immediately interested people, this much should be clear. Now we have the situation of four million Hindus in US, but what is US - not only USA, everywhere else? The leaders enforce upon the citizens that life is temporary and that there is no life after this life, there's only materialism. Their proof for this believe is no proof at all, nothing but pushing their luck - to bluff and fool us with their material illusions of impertinent wealthiness. Just like one of their demoniac leaders, Richard Hawkins, is preaching that a fetus is just tissue and can be aborted without thinking about it. This is an unproven, erroneous belief and they have no right to enforce such foolish fairy tales at schools, universities, tv and newspapers. The Vedas say, stop the mudhas, wherever there's life there's a soul and to kill or even kill unborn children is the greatest sin. Krishna says, yada yada, He Himself has to constantly descend to establish true religion and devotional service and this is where we are right now. People are not able to repeat, implement and adopt the very simple teachings of Lord Caitanya's Sankirtan Movement. Temples are getting empty, are being closed, in many parts of the world there're even no temples at all what is nothing but sloppiness of the Vaishnava institutions. Krishna repeatedly promises and assures again and again, as soon you serve Him there's all support. So what is this "dwindling of spiritual assets"? Now there're four million Hindus in US and it is time to wake them up that they live in a system where atheism, materialism and godless understanding is enforced upon them day and night. There's no problem that the demons cannot believe their nonsense, but they have no right to fool and entrain the innocent into their demoniac, hellish civilization. But who's preaching this - who is actually representing Lord Caitanya Sankirtan movement nowadays? Instead, "today often temples in such former boom countries are quiet, inactive, and shockingly inhospitable except for, at best, on Sundays," (HH Devamrta Swami on 31 Mar 2008)
  6. Another moral question, should science get into creating hybrids for sake of medical advancement? Probably something what they twist out of scripture like, "conquer and subjugate the world". Q&A: Hybrid embryos <!-- S BO --> <!-- S IIMA --> <table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="203"> <tbody><tr><td> Early embryos yield stem cells </td></tr> </tbody></table> <!-- E IIMA --> A bill is going through Parliament which would allow scientists to create human-animal embryos for research. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6233415.stm Researchers say the work is needed to advance the understanding of complex diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Motor Neurone Disease. But critics say it involves the needless destruction of human life, and is fraught with moral difficulties. What is a hybrid? A hybrid embryo is a mixture of both human and animal tissue. The experiments that some British scientists want to conduct involve transferring nuclei containing DNA from human cells, such as skin cells, into animal eggs that have had almost all of their genetic information removed. The resulting cytoplasmic embryos - known as admixed embryos - are more than 99% human, with a small animal component, making up around 0.1%. The embryo would be grown in the lab for a few days, then harvested for stem cells - immature cells that can become many types of tissue. Why use animal eggs? The creation of hybrid human-animal embryos was first suggested as a way of addressing the shortage of human eggs available for research. Also, experts say using human-animal mixes rather than human eggs to get the stem cells makes sense because the process is less cumbersome and yields better results. How could this help find disease cures? Scientists say they can use embryonic stem cells to study different disease processes. For example, they could take genetic material from a person with Parkinson's disease and put it into an empty animal egg to make stem cells that will carry the same genetic defects that cause Parkinson's. Stem cells also have the potential to grow into different tissues, so in the future it might be possible to transplant cells cloned from individual patients to cure diseases. What are the concerns about the work? Opponents say this is tampering with nature and is unethical. Critics say they are repulsed by the idea and there must be no creation of an animal-human hybrid. It is already illegal to implant human-animal embryos in the womb or bring them to term. One of the scientists applying to do hybrid work, Professor Chris Shaw from Kings College London, stressed: "We think there is nothing illegal, immoral or unethical about this. "While we understand the concerns, we think they are largely founded on misinformation. "People think we are generating some sort of hybrid animal. This is just cells, just for science. No animal is ever going to be created." What does the law say? Although ministers felt the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 needed updating as science had moved on significantly, they were initially cool on the idea of creating human-animal embryos. However, they bowed to pressure from scientists, who argued a ban would hamper medical research. In addition, the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee carried out an inquiry into the proposals and concluded that the creation of hybrid embryos was necessary for research and that there should not be a complete ban. A draft bill published in May 2007 allows for the creation of human embryos that have been physically mixed with one or more animal cells. However, true human-animal hybrids, made by the fusion of sperm and eggs, would remain outlawed. Will the bill become law? Opponents are determined to block the proposals. Several leading members of the Catholic Church have described them as immoral. In his Easter sermon, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, leader of the church in Scotland, described the legislation as a "monstrous attack on human rights, human dignity and human life". A significant number of MPs, including several Catholic members of the Cabinet, are also reported to have serious concerns about the legislation, leading to speculation of high profile resignations. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has promised that MPs will be given a free vote on some of the more controversial aspects of the bill, including human-animal embryos. Some 200 medical charities have urged MPs to support legislation allowing the creation of animal-human embryos. And Labour peer and fertility expert Lord Winston has accused the church of misleading the public over the issue. Are there other controversial elements to the draft bill? Yes. The draft bill approves the creation of so-called Saviour siblings. This would allow doctors to select an embryo for IVF which could not only create a new child, but also tissue which may be able to treat an existing sick sibling. The bill would also end the need for IVF clinics to consider the need for a "father figure" when deciding whether or not to offer treatment. Will the scientists be able to proceed with their work? The body that grants licences for embryo research, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, has agreed in principle to the creation of human-animal hybrids. However, it also stressed that each application must be considered closely on its own merits. If future government legislation differs from the HFEA line, then the regulator will be forced to rethink.

  8. The Real Wealth Of Our Spirit Soul Money, they say, is sweeter than honey! With money everything is at ones beck and call. Hence the inordinate desire of everyone in this material world to amass unlimited wealth, whether fair or foul. However, little consideration is given to the capacity of the body to enjoy so-called material pleasures. Man can only eat as much as his stomach can contain, even if he is the wealthiest man, and can afford the most delicious, sumptuous meal. Similarly man can occupy only as much space as his body can when he goes to sleep, even if he constructs the tallest skyscraper. Sexually, man is so limited that if he is locked up in a room with a hundred beautiful lusty damsels, very soon he would cry for help. Yet man’s passion for acquiring wealth is immeasurable. In Kali-yuga or our modern age, wealth alone is considered the sign of a man’s good birth, proper behavior and fine qualities. Therefore one is considered high class, middle class or low class merely according to his financial status, regardless of his knowledge, culture and behavior. From experience however, we can understand that no amount of wealth can quench our intense desires, it can only give some temporary relief. The law of lust works in a converse manner, the more we have the more we want! In this way valuable lives and time are wasted running after this mirage, life after life. Little do we know that our greatest wealth is devotional service to the Supreme Lord, and that it is this devotional service alone that can fully satisfy our soul. The execution of duties solely for the purpose of pleasing the Supreme Lord, is known as devotional service; and in its maturity such devotional service becomes love of God, the factual goal of life for every living being. Actually the living entity is not intended to achieve success in mundane religious rituals, economic development or sense enjoyment. The living entity should not even desire success in liberation, what to speak of success in mundane religiosity, economics and sense enjoyment. Because they will cannot satisfy our intense desire for happiness. One’s real desire should only be to achieve the stage of loving transcendental service to the Lord. Concerning man’s search for the ultimate goal of life, there is a story of poor man who went to an astrologer, Sarvajna, to have his future prophesized. When Sarvajna saw the horoscope of the man, he was at once astonished that the man was so poor, and he said to him, “Why are you so unhappy? From your horoscope I can see that you have a hidden treasure left to you by your father. However, the horoscope indicates that your father could not disclose this to you because he died in a foreign place, but now you can search out this treasure and be happy.” This story is cited because the living entity is suffering due to his ignorance of the hidden treasure of his eternal father, Supreme Personality of Godhead, known in various religious traditions as Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh, Krsna, Rama, Govinda etc. That treasure is love of Godhead, and in every Vedic scripture the conditioned soul is advised to find it. As stated in Bhagavad-gita, although the conditioned soul is the son of the wealthiest personality’the Personality of Godhead’he does not realize it. Therefore scriptures are given to him to help him search out his father and his eternal paternal property. The astrologer Sarvajna further advised the poor man: “Don’t dig on the southern side of your house to find the treasure, for if you do so you will be attacked by a poisonous wasp and will be baffled. The search should be conducted on the eastern side where there is actual light, which is called devotional service or Krsna consciousness. On the southern side there are religious rituals, and on the western side there is mental speculation, and on the northern side there is meditational yoga.” Sarvajna’s advice should be carefully noted by everyone. If one searches for the ultimate goal by the ritualistic process, he will surely be baffled. Such a process involves the performance of rituals under the guidance of a priest who takes money in exchange for service. A man may think he will be happy by performing such rituals, but actually if he does gain some result from them, it is only temporary. His material distresses will continue. Thus he will never become truly happy by following the ritualistic process. Instead, he will simply increase his material pangs more and more. The same may be said for digging on the northern side, or searching for the treasure by means of the meditational yoga process. By this process a person thinks of becoming one with the Supreme Lord, but this merging into the Supreme is like being swallowed by a large serpent. Sometimes a large serpent swallows a smaller one, and merging into the spiritual existence of the Supreme is analogous. While the small serpent is searching after perfection, he is swallowed. Obviously there is no solution here. On the western side there is also an impediment in the form of a yaksa, an evil spirit who protects the treasure. The idea is that a hidden treasure can never be found by one who asks the favor of a yaksa in order to attain it. The result is that one will simply be killed. This yaksa is the speculative mind, and in this case the speculative process of self-realization, or the jnana process, is also suicidal. The only possibility then is to search for the hidden treasure on the eastern side by the process of devotional service in full Krsna or God consciousness. Indeed, that process of devotional service is the perpetual hidden treasure, and when one attains to it, he becomes perpetually spiritually rich, and gives up the miserable position of trying to be happy in this material world without God. One who is a poor hearted and does not perform devotional service to Krsna remains miserable in material existence. Sometimes he suffers the bites of poisonous creatures like wasp and bees, becomes baffled. Sometimes he follows the philosophy of monism and thereby loses his identity, and sometimes he is swallowed by a large serpent, when he attempts to become one with the supreme. It is only by abandoning all these and becoming fixed in Krsna consciousness, devotional service to the Lord, that one can actually regain ones loving relationship with Krishna, the eternal supreme father of all entities, this will immediately release the living being from all suffering and bring the greatest bliss and satisfaction. This is the greatest wealth and the ultimate goal of life, after achieving this one does not desire anything else, as this gives complete satisfaction to the soul. 9. Multiple missionary ventures - moving from brahminical culture to varnashrama? Could it be that temples are getting empty? When his HH Devamrita Swami says, "today often temples in such former boom countries are quiet, inactive, and shockingly inhospitable except for, at best, on Sundays," what could that mean? He says, it is a GBC resolution but goes as opinion? http://news.iskcon.com/node/964/2008-03-31/the_logistics_multi-iskcon_centres_same_city Opinion The Logistics of Multi-ISKCON Centres in the Same City By Devamrita Swami on 31 Mar 2008 Image: Dennis Gerbeckx <!--paging_filter-->The 2008 Mayapur GBC annual meeting ratified as official ISKCON policy the presence of multiple ISKCON centres in the same city. Conceived in New Vrindavan, June 2007, at the special GBC meeting for strategic planning, the “urban proliferation proposal” earned unanimous support from the brainstorming GBCs, hungry for greater ISKCON effectiveness. Their enthusiasm led to the final resolution crafted and passed at Mayapur in March. In the eyes of many GBCs, the crucial factor for their support was the stipulation that any expansion in a city would be subject to the local GBCs guidance and authority--in other words, no loose splinters flying off on their own. A look at ISKCON's urban history reveals why this resolution was necessary. Both ISKCON and cities have changed. During the early, developmental years of the sixties and seventies, extending into the eighties, the common devotee notion of the day was one centre per metropolis. A prime reason for this policy was the prevalence of traveling sankirtan parties roaming throughout the first major ISKCON continents, North America and Europe. Hence Srila Prabhupada established the protocol that no sankirtan party from one city could enter the sankirtan space of another city without permission of the local president. Perhaps this protocol was taken too strictly, as justification for a rigid "city-state concept"--both of a temple and of its president's domain. Thus apparently the idea became enshrined that one temple president controlled entire sprawling metropolises such as Johannesburg (8 million), Chicago (9 million), New York (20 million), and London (14 million). True, less expansive geo-ecclesiastics would limit the city-state temple's domain to precisely within a city’s official borders. Nevertheless, even such partially curtailed concepts of metropolitan sovereignty still encompassed massive areas, millions of people, and lengthy commuting distances. An interesting historical item is that during the eighties, considerations in ISKCON for developing more centres in the same city were often dismissed as needless "duplication of missionary services." Since the heady, trail-blazing days of ISKCON's first phase of urban development, the preaching field has markedly changed, and so have the missionary services. By 2010 more than half of the world’s population will live in cities. That means, for the first time in its known history, humanity will be a predominantly urban species. Cities have become gargantuan metropolitan sprawls. Traffic congestion—gridlock--has triumphed; consequently the commuting time for ISKCON’s flock has soared. Meanwhile, lamentably, especially in the established market democracies traditionally known as the First World, ISKCON's urban performance generally has plummeted. Few traveling sankirtan parties now crisscross those nations—thus no need for the exclusive metropolitan monopolies of the golden book distribution days. Today often temples in such former boom countries are quiet, inactive, and shockingly inhospitable except for, at best, on Sundays. Therefore at Mayapur the GBCs voted that the time is now--under the local GBC's authority--for sanctioning multiple missionary ventures in the same metropolis, as a tool for igniting more preaching outreach, more servicing of the population. The ISKCON historical record clearly reveals that none other than Srila Prabhupada himself was the first to advocate multiple centres and temples in the same metropolis. In London, New York City, and Mumbai, Srila Prabhupada urged multiple endeavours. His managemental requirement was that the local GBC would oversee all proliferation. London has had two temples for more than three decades; Mumbai has three (soon four); Delhi is up to six, with no limit in sight.
  10. Not that I meant that this is an option for you to get into. Just to high-light how easy it is to get things going and how the institutions corrupted just anything.
  11. If they offer at the Indian BBT one Bhagavad-gita for £1.6 you would pay when buying a larger number probably less than £1. This is where things get reasonable to get into. Now just calculate, Great Britain has 56 million people if you make ads, how many people you could reach and how many would order a copy? Make a business plan, find a sponsor and order a containership from Asia to England. Heard they abolished the last Sankirtan van last week at the Manor.
  12. Psychology -- Can therapy and drugs save us from stress and depression? Tom writes: "I am curious to inquire about psychology. Here in the West people have the idea that the way to deal with suffering and inner turmoil is to see a psychologist and/or take medication for stress and depression like anti-depressants etc. What is you take on this?" (03-21-08) Dear Tom, Hare Krishna! All glories to Srila Prabhupada. We are suffering from "inner turmoil" because of identifying with the body. We think, "I am an American man,I am an Australian man..." We have been lead to believe we will achieve a whole set of unattainable goals in our life by the media, by advertisers trying to sell their products, etc. There is so much false propaganda about finding "true love," and living a "meaningful life" and being "happy." So many great things are supposed to happen when we get a job and earn a lot of money. We will have so much leisure time... We will be very happy... We will fall in love... All we have to do is work very hard... Most people have no idea they are not the body but the spirit soul within the body and that the real purpose of life is on the spiritual platform providing the spiritual "food" needed by the soul. This society places no importance on the soul or spiritual advancement and as a result people will naturally be depressed. Without the spiritual component in their lives they must be depressed, they must suffer from so much stress and mental turmoil. They are trying to live an impossible dream. People believe they can be happy are trying very hard for this in the material world which is a place of suffering full of death. The reality is that every way we try to get happiness in the material world will disappoint us in the end. Everything ends in frustration. That is the reality of the material world. But the general public are not aware of this. They have so many unrealistic expectations of what they will achieve from the material world... Even people who have very easy lifestyles still face the same problems. No one is happy in the material concept of life. The mistake is thinking if we satisfy the body we will become "happy." Today there is so much endeavor to increase the comforts of the body. But we are not the body. We are the soul within the body. We can only be happy if the soul is provided with spiritual food. Srila Prabhupada gives the example of the bird and the cage. If you neglect to feed the bird in the cage but keep the cage very clean and shine it very beautifully and decorate it very nicely the bird will die... Similarly if we simply cater to the "cage," the body, and supply food to the body and comforts to the body and try to gratify the senses of the body but neglect the soul naturally we will be depressed and suffer from stress and inner turmoil. Because we are not providing the spiritual food the soul needs. It does not matter what our lifestyle is like if we do not provide the food the soul needs we will not be happy... It is best to live simply and only supply the needs of the body to the minimum needed to maintain the body in good healthy and spend one's time and energy in developing the spiritual side of life by Krishna consciousness. Using drugs to "cure" unhappiness and depression is not a cure at all. It simply masks the problem. The problem does not go away at all, nor does taking drugs do anything to help solve the problem. Basically it just stops the mind from functioning rationally for a some time. It is simply intoxication. We have to be realistic. The lifestyle most people lead in the modern world is almost completely devoid of any spiritual touch. The population is educated to be completely on the bodily concept of life, so naturally they are depressed and suffering from inner turmoil. The solution is to educate people in Krishna consciousness and in this way they will have realistic expectations about this world. This world is not paradise, it is a place of suffering. Not a place we want to stay in, but a place we can use to elevate our consciousness so that our next life will be in the spiritual world with Krishna. This human life is not meant for working so hard. Life can be simpler. And if we lead a simpler life centered around serving Krishna and making spiritual advancement we can be happy and satisfied even in this material world. That is the solution. It is a great mistake that psychologists presume because someone is suffering from depression there is some problem with him. Of course his problem is he is on the bodily concept of life but this is because he is not properly educated. This "modern" world does not provide the education required to enable people to have realistic expectations of what they will achieve nor is any real spiritual education available. Thus the population in general are educated in sense gratification and the bodily concept of life so natural they will suffer from stress, anxiety and so many other problems. This is a problem with the way the society is being run, it is not the fault of the individuals. From any point if we take seriously to Krishna consciousness, chanting the Hare Krishna maha mantra, reading Srila Prabhupada's books and serving Krishna, we will advance in spiritual life and the more we make advancement in Krishna consciousness the more clearly we will understand who we are, what is our business in this material world and we will see the world around us very clearly for what it really is. The stress, the anxiety will go away and be replaced with transcendental bliss. We will gradually transcend the material world. Even though we are here in the material world our consciousness will be beyond it. That stage we can come to gradually. The best "therapy" is to chant: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare The 2 nd question is the methods that they usually use is of discussing a persons past always to explain the way they are today. Like for example is someone is suffering from a lack of peace and joy in life they go see a therapist and they forever discuss the persons past, "how they grew up in such a dysfunctional family, how their dad was too harsh with them and scarred them mentally, how they feel insecure today due to being constantly called stupid by their mom" I think you catch my drift, the idea that the way I am today is completely due to all the external influences of the past and I now need a therapist to point out to me all my "issues". I feel in my gut that this is a very misguided "science" however I don't have the insight to explain why it is ultimately very flawed. Can you please kindly give me some insight into this please? Yes. This is a very misguided "science." Generally the psychologists themselves are not feeling much joy and happiness in their lives. Often their lives are just as bad as their patients. What can they do? Physician heal thyself. It may be that our family may not have been very good however the family we get is because of our karma. We can't change the past. Moving forward does not require a detailed analysis of exactly how we came to the point we are at now. Simply we have to take stock of our position at the moment and determine where we want to be in the future and work out what is the process to travel from the point I am at now to the point I want to be at in the future. Krishna consciousness is the perfect psychology. Saddhana-bhakti, the beginning stages of Krishna consciousness is about mind and sense control. It is a process that will make the mind peaceful and purify the body. And the exact details of how the soul, the mind and body work and how to get them to work correctly is given in the Bhagavad-gita and other Vedic texts. So my suggestion would be to take to Krishna consciousness and realize that: 1. The lifestyle people are expected to live in the modern world is unreasonable. It is completely on the bodily concept of life and there is no spiritual education. Naturally people will suffer in so many ways because of this. 2. The preconception of psychologists that there is something "wrong" with a person who has inner turmoil and suffering as a result living within the modern world is incorrect. This is quite natural and to be expected. 3. The idea that the problem is caused by one's childhood experiences is false. There is a very serious problem with modern society. It is effecting everyone, no matter what their childhood upbringing was like. Even people who had good childhood experiences still suffer from mental turmoil trying to live within the expectations they are given by the media and the advertisers, etc... 4. The problem can not be solved by drugs. 5. The solution is Krishna consciousness. Chant Hare Krishna and be happy! Madhudvisa dasa
  13. Garuda das's Gita BY: KRSNA DASA Mar 30, UK (SUN) — I did write an insensitive piece about Garuda das and his Gita and I would like to apologise to all who have done their best to put me back in my place. I have now carefully read Garuda's intro to his book and can understand how intelligently he's presenting this translation attractively for the people in general....please excuse me on that front. What I do feel still stands are my real concerns. It's the general disregard for His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada and the exploitation of the facilities He gave us for a Krishna conscious society... Mahavidya das and his campaign exposing not just the Temple President of Bhaktivedanta Manor, but almost every other opportunist exacting more than tithes for their "service" Graham Schweig is unknown to me. He is a professor in an American university. IF he is on a personal salary out of teaching Bhagavad Gita, what message is he sending? What is his profit by selling his books in Srila Prabhupada's temples and ISKCON websites? If by his illuminating presentation of Bhagavad Gita to the intellectual classes he is simultaneously living a life of renunciation (setting the example), then I have totally misrepresented him and his works. We have no right, however, to make business out of the gifts from Lord Sri Krishna and Srila Prabhupada. What is an ordinary devotee to feel when he/she sees a book by Graham Schweig alongside the books of His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada? Why is Graham Schweig selling his book here? Is he donating all his money to the BBT? Has he written this book purely out of service to the Supreme Lord, or is there some cut for himself? If he is receiving profit, then it cannot be pure service to Lord Sri Krishna and His pure devotee. The ordinary devotee working for Srila Prabhupada, in Srila Prabhupada's temple, developing his devotional service attitude for Lord Sri Krishna, is not expected to honor those who furnish their bank accounts, profiting from their knowledge or expertise. Graham Schweig has written other books. One of them is on the rasa lila pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna. I believe in freedom of speech and Graham Schweig has liberty to write as he likes but who sanctioned his books for sale on ISKCON websites and at ISKCON temples? "We must always remember that a devotees life is one of vairagya-vidya , or renunciation and knowledge. Therefore all devotees are warned not to live unnecessarily luxurious lives at the cost of others. Grhasthas living within the jurisdiction of the temple must be especially careful not to imitate karmis by acquiring opulent clothing, food and conveyances. As far as possible, these should be avoided. A member of the temple, whether grhastha, brahmacari or sannyasi, must practice a life of renunciation, following in the footsteps of Haridasa thakura and the six Goswamis." Caitanya-caritamrta Antya 3 .101 "Any householder who is working full-time (with his wife) as a sankirtana book distributor, or temple managerial duties, artist, cook, etc., shall be provided food, shelter, and other bare minimum necessities by the temple itself. They should not cook their own meals separate from the temple meals. If they have children, then some minimal allowance may be given according to the number of children. If they want anything extra or over and above what the temple president sees as absolute necessity, then they should work outside--the temple cannot pay for anything beyond the bare necessities. And definitely, the BBT cannot pay any salary to anybody. Our philosophy is "simple living and high thinking"--not sense gratification. The temple presidents and leaders (elder students ) must show this by example. Temple or asrama means for renunciation and renounced persons. If one is engaged in self-realization process, then his material necessities become almost nil. Persons who do not like this can work outside." 15. That's what I thought if someone would start to sell Bhagavad-gitas you would need to sell for 25£ in order to pay the out-of pocket expenses, to pay your bills. And you need to sell 20-30 each day if for example you have to pay a rent. This cannot work. Could be that for this reason absolutely nothing is bought anymore in the West, see pic. On the other hand, it is obvious that ISKCON is NOT interested anymore to efficiently spread Prabhupada's books but has other sources of income.
  16. I find this is a highly important thread - didnt read it yet since the topic headline seemed meaningless. 1. “How valuable is an individual?” 2. “What makes me significant, unique, and worthy?” 3. What is reality? 4. “Why do I exist?” These four questions might not of immense concern for our enlightened Vaishnavas of this forum but for our present godless, demoniac global governments - how to insinuate all those lovely nice things called sinful kali-yuga content to more and more subdue the citizens into hellish condition. In other words, since our political leaders consider human beings as soulless biological life they consider only one thing, how to keep their citizens nicely in material illusion and go to hell. As soon you agree to one demoniac component they immediately up to ante the next. Politicians introducing as a matter of course newly invented machines for euthanasia, "advanced" methods for easy abortion, area-wide guaranteed distribution of heavy drugs, 24h pornography channel on free tv to settle the youth into the understanding that you don't need family when you have pornography, leading thousands of young men to be killed in fake wars like Iraq, introducing more and more "advanced" contraceptive methods. Subsidizing with tax to increase addictive behavior by modifying coffee, tobacco, tea, alcohol. The list how even children are purposefully induced to sinful life is based upon these four points - no way, you are not an immortal soul made in the image of God but the same biological accident, casuality like insects, vermins, bugs, bacillus. However, seems like gradually people are waking up how they are treated by their demoniac leaders.
  17. Seems the goal of this website is an online vedabase, presently this service is not yet enabled but will be a source for Srila Prabhupada’s books. So far it looks nicely arranged and shows what can be done if someone gets it together: http://www.vanipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
  18. Some good news, since in the material world this seems a huge topic, how to successfully go back to Godhead - "Tulasi Devi never goes back to Godhead, she is always with Godhead." Tulasi Devi never goes back to Godhead, she is always with Godhead "I am very glad to know that you are seriously taking to Srimati Tulasi Devi worship. Tulasi Devi is a pure devotee of Krishna and she should be treated with the same respect given to all Krishna's pure devotees. Simply by worshipping her faithfully, a devotee can get himself free from all material miseries. In the Nectar of Devotion I have given two verses from the Skanda Purana, one of which is: "Tulasi is auspicious in all respects. Simply by seeing, simply by touching, simply by remembering, simply by praying to, simply by bowing before, simply by hearing about, or simply by sowing the tree, there is always auspiciousness. Anyone who comes in touch with the Tulasi tree in the above mentioned ways lives eternally in the Vaikuntha world." So from this verse we can understand how pure is the service which Tulasi offers to Sri Krishna. So we should always endeavor after becoming servant of Tulasi Devi. I do not know who has taught you that part of a Tulasi plant may be cut off and then replanted? From the Tulasi plant you can cut off only leaves for offering them to Krishna, never for cutting and planting. That is an offense. The manjaris (seeds) can be offered in water and it makes the water fragrant and tasteful. And the manjaris can be planted for growing new Tulasi plants. Yes, the prayer you have enclosed is bona fide. Tulasi Devi never goes back to Godhead, she is always with Godhead. She is a pure devotee and thus she has appeared on this planet to render service to Krishna by being offered in all temples throughout the world by being offered up to the lotus feet of Krishna." 72-01-06. 20. The court decision will surely take a while, hopefully this move to file an action also comes out as a positive preaching tool. Hindu Temple Sues British Charity Over Cow Killing BY: STAFF CORRESPONDENT Mar 29, LONDON, ENGLAND (NEWS POST INDIA) — A popular Hindu temple near London has sued Britain's largest animal welfare charity saying it had illegally carried out the mercy killing of a cow that was under the temple's care. Gangotri, an ailing 13-year-old Belgian blue jersey that was being looked after by devotees at the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple, was put down by veterinarians of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) last December as priests prayed in the temple. The RSPCA says the mercy killing was carried out in the cow's interest and that it had a warrant to do so. But temple authorities and other Hindu groups accused the charity of behaving covertly and held protests outside the British parliament earlier this year. Gangotri had broken a leg a year before she died and could no longer stand. A legal notice was handed over to a senior RSPCA official at its headquarters in Horsham Friday, said a spokesman for the temple, which is situated in the West London suburb of Watford and was donated by the late Beatle George Harrison to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon). 'The pretend warrant that they served on us was illegal, incorrect and defective,' said Vinay Tanna. 'Everything flowing out of that warrant is therefore illegal. They had told us before that they were not going to do anything. This is an issue of trespass,' he added. The mercy killing of Gangotri has become a rallying cause for many Hindus in Britain, who say the cow was being looked after on the sprawling temple grounds and that the killing was unnecessary and insensitive. 'There are theological and legal aspects to our decision to sue,' said Radha Mohandas of Bhaktivedanta Manor. 'There are flaws in the RSPCA's approach to these kinds of matters. They are only a charity yet they seem to take the law into their own hands. What they did showed a lack of respect towards our religion,' he added. RSPCA spokesperson Becky Hawkes said: 'We have received a letter today, though no legal proceedings have been started against us. The letter asks us to admit liability for trespass to land and trespass to property. 'However, we entered the property accompanied by the police who were holding a valid warrant. We acted properly, within the law, and on the advice of three independent vets who said Gangotri was in constant pain and should be put to sleep immediately.' Hindu priests were also angered by the killing last year of a bull, Shambo, which was being looked after in a Welsh temple and had contracted bovine TB. The Bhaktivedanta Manor campaign has the support of more than a dozen MPs, including Peter Ainsworthy, the environment spokesman of the opposition Conservative Party. Sailesh Vara, MP and shadow leader of the House of Commons, said during a visit to the temple this month: 'I am particularly keen to ensure that, for the future, there is a proper procedure established, so that this sort of incident does not happen again.'
  21. Good point, Ray says something very similiar, "as there are enough naive people to be led, there will be corrupt authorities to lead them." And this will go on, and on, and on, and on... Real Decisions in an Artificial System BY: RAY LANTHIER Mar 29, TORONTO, CANADA (SUN) — Yes, the GBC make the ‘real’ decisions as does everybody. The problem is that they have the power to enforce them on an acquiescent community of devotees. There was no coup, no military revolution. The GBC simply took over and made claims for themselves, playing at being authorities AND THEY WERE ACCEPTED. Nobody is forced to follow the dictates of the GBC. One can opt out of the current ISKCON Hindu church. As long as there are enough naive people to be led, there will be corrupt authorities to lead them. What needs to happen is a ‘foot dissension’, an institution-wide walk out. But that needs, ironically, a raising of consciousness so that members can actually use their intelligence long enough to hear God in their heart.

  23. Thanks Malati and Babhru prabhus for taking the time to post at audarya fellowship. Mahatma Gandhi was also quoted by Prabhupada. He serves as a great example that when you act in this material world, when you're the cause for an action, you're also responsible for this action. In other words you're forced to accept the result of your action. And finally this is what happened to the Mahatma. What Vaishnavas do, they don't actually start any change in the world on their own but simply carry out what is coming from Krishna Himself through the bona fide parampara system. In this way they don't become implicated in the law of action and reaction like Mahatma Gandhi but remain aloof from the laws of nature which are binding us. Even bondage to so called good results is after all bondage and leads to be rewarded by taking birth again. And if we are able to again take up the path of bhakti so easily like right now is rather uncertain. Remember, even demigods are presently lining up to take birth here in this terrible kali-yuga, because in heaven the material pleasures are so intense that actual devotion to the Lord doesn't take place. Bhutva bhutva praliyate. Again, take birth, this business will go on. And ultimately, when the whole universe is annihilated, then again we take shelter in the body of Maha-Visnu and live for, in that way, without any body, for many millions of years. Again, there is creation, and then again given chance. "All right, take another chance. Be Krishna conscious." The topic of resultant karma, the path of Mahatma Gandhi, is rather complex. 1. 24. Might be true - we're very limited, but what about Krishna's Holy Name? Better not say that the Holy Name is limited and not a savior. Assigning society's progression to materialistic economists and spiritually blind leaders? Not so sure if Krishna agrees with this proposal in Bhagavad-gita, couldn't find such a verse yet. If things look difficult, the solution is often easy - just start to believe in Krishna, His words and His great devotees. Btw, what do you mean with, things are much more complex and cannot be solved by Krishna's mercy? Antya-lila: TEXT 55 yadyapi anya saṅkete anya haya nāmābhāsa tathāpi nāmera teja nā haya vināśa SYNONYMS yadyapi—although; anya—another; saṅkete—by intimation; anya—that other; haya—is; nāma-ābhāsa—almost equal to the holy name; tathāpi—still; nāmera teja—the transcendental power of the holy name; nā haya vināśa—is not destroyed. TRANSLATION Nāmācārya Haridāsa Ṭhākura, the authority on the chanting of the holy name, said, “The chanting of the Lord’s holy name to indicate something other than the Lord is an instance of nāmābhāsa. Even when the holy name is chanted in this way, its transcendental power is not destroyed. Antya3.56 TEXT 56 daṁṣṭri-daṁṣṭrāhato mleccho hā rāmeti punaḥ punaḥ uktvāpi muktim āpnoti kiṁ punaḥ śraddhayā gṛṇan SYNONYMS daṁṣṭri—of a boar; daṁṣṭra—by the teeth; āhataḥ—killed; mlecchaḥ—a meat-eater; hā rāma—“O my Lord Rāma”; iti—thus; punaḥ punaḥ—again and again; uktvā—saying; api—even; muktim—liberation; āpnoti—gets; kim—what; punaḥ—again; śraddhayā—with faith and veneration; gṛṇan—chanting. TRANSLATION “‘Even a mleccha who is being killed by the tusk of a boar and who cries in distress again and again, “hā rāma, hā rāma” attains liberation. What then to speak of those who chant the holy name with veneration and faith?’ PURPORT This refers to an instance in which a meat-eater being killed by a boar uttered the words hā rāma, hā rāma again and again at the time of his death. Since this is a quotation from the Nṛsiṁha Purāṇa, this indicates that in the purāṇic age there must also have been mlecchas and yavanas (meat-eaters), and the words hā rāma, meaning “condemned,” were also uttered in those days. Thus Haridāsa Ṭhākura gives evidence that even a meat-eater who condemns something by uttering the words hā rāma gets the benefit of chanting the holy name that the devotee chants to mean “O my Lord Rāma!” Antya3.57 TEXT 57 ajāmila putre bolāya bali ‘nārāyaṇa’ viṣṇu-dūta āsi’ chāḍāya tāhāra bandhana SYNONYMS ajāmila—Ajāmila; putre—unto his son; bolāya—calls; bali—saying; nārāyaṇa—the holy name of Nārāyaṇa; viṣṇu-dūta—the attendants of Lord Viṣṇu; āsi’—coming; chāḍāya—remove; tāhāra—of him; bandhana—the bonds. TRANSLATION “Ajāmila was a great sinner during his life, but at the time of death he accidentally called for his youngest son, whose name was Nārāyaṇa, and the attendants of Lord Viṣṇu came to relieve him from the bonds of Yamarāja, the superintendent of death. Antya3.58 TEXT 58 ‘rāma’ dui akṣara ihā nahe vyavahita prema-vācī ‘hā’-śabda tāhāte bhūṣita SYNONYMS rāma—the holy name of the Lord; dui—two; akṣara—syllables; ihā—these; nahe—are not; vyavahita—separated; prema-vācī—a word indicating love; hā—“O”; śabda—the word; tāhāte—by that; bhūṣita—decorated. TRANSLATION “The word ‘rāma’ consists of the two syllables ‘rā’ and ‘ma.’ These are unseparated and are decorated with the loving word ‘hā,’ meaning ‘O.’ Antya3.59 TEXT 59 nāmera akṣara-sabera ei ta’ svabhāva vyavahita haile nā chāḍe āpana-prabhāva SYNONYMS nāmera—of the holy name; akṣara—letters; sabera—of all; ei—this; ta’—certainly; svabhāva—the characteristic; vyavahita haile—even when improperly uttered; nā—do not; chāḍe—give up; āpana-prabhāva—their own spiritual influence. TRANSLATION “The letters of the holy name have so much spiritual potency that they act even when uttered improperly. PURPORT Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura states that the word vyavahita (“improperly uttered”) is not used here to refer to the mundane vibration of the letters of the alphabet. Such negligent utterance for the sense gratification of materialistic persons is not a vibration of transcendental sound. Utterance of the holy name while one engages in sense gratification is an impediment on the path toward achieving ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa. On the other hand, if one who is eager for devotional service utters the holy name even partially or improperly, the holy name, which is identical with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, exhibits its spiritual potency because of that person’s offenseless utterance. Thus one is relieved from all unwanted practices, and one gradually awakens his dormant love for Kṛṣṇa. Antya3.60 TEXT 60 nāmaikaṁ yasya vāci smaraṇa-patha-gataṁ śrotra-mūlaṁ gataṁ vā śuddhaṁ vāśuddha-varṇaṁ vyavahita-rahitaṁ tārayaty eva satyam tac ced deha-draviṇa-janatā-lobha-pāṣaṇḍa-madhye nikṣiptaṁ syān na phala-janakaṁ śīghram evātra vipra SYNONYMS nāma—the holy name; ekam—once; yasya—whose; vāci—in the mouth; smaraṇa-patha-gatam—entered the path of remembrance; śrotra-mūlam gatam—entered the roots of the ears; vā—or; śuddham—pure; vā—or; aśuddha-varṇam—impurely uttered; vyavahita-rahitam—without offenses or without being separated; tārayati—delivers; eva—certainly; satyam—truly; tat—that name; cet—if; deha—the material body; draviṇa—material opulence; janatā—public support; lobha—greed; pāṣaṇḍa—atheism; madhye—toward; nikṣiptam—directed; syāt—may be; na—not; phala-janakam—producing the results; śīghram—quickly; eva—certainly; atra—in this matter; vipra—O brāhmaṇa. TRANSLATION “If a devotee once utters the holy name of the Lord, or if it penetrates his mind or enters his ear, which is the channel of aural reception, that holy name will certainly deliver him from material bondage, whether vibrated properly or improperly, with correct or incorrect grammar, or properly joined or vibrated in separate parts. O brāhmaṇa, the potency of the holy name is therefore certainly great. However, if one uses the vibration of the holy name for the benefit of the material body, for material wealth and followers, or under the influence of greed or atheism—in other words, if one utters the name with offenses—such chanting will not produce the desired result very soon. Therefore one should diligently avoid offenses in chanting the holy name of the Lord.’” PURPORT This verse from the Padma Purāṇa is included in the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa (11.289) by Sanātana Gosvāmī. Therein Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī gives the following explanation: vāci gataṁ prasaṅgād vāṅ-madhye pravṛttam api, smaraṇa-patha-gataṁ kathañcin manaḥ-spṛṣṭam api, śrotra-mūlaṁ gataṁ kiñcit śrutam api, śuddha-varṇaṁ vā aśuddha-varṇam api vā, vyavahitaṁ śabdāntareṇa yad-vyavadhānaṁ vakṣyamāṇa-nārāyaṇa-śabdasya kiñcid uccāraṇānantaraṁ prasaṅgād āpatitaṁ śabdāntaraṁ tena rahitaṁ sat. This means that if one somehow or other hears, utters or remembers the holy name, or if it catches his mind while coming near his ears, that holy name, even if vibrated in separate words, will act. An example of such separation is given as follows: yadvā, yadyapi ‘halaṁ riktam’ ity ādy-uktau hakāra-rikārayor vṛttyā harīti-nāmāsty eva, tathā ‘rāja-mahiṣī’ ity atra rāma-nāmāpi, evam anyad apy ūhyam, tathāpi tat-tan-nāma-madhye vyavadhāyakam akṣarāntaram astīty etādṛśa-vyavadhāna-rahitam ity arthaḥ, yadvā, vyavahitaṁ ca tad-rahitaṁ cāpi vā, tatra vyavahitaṁ nāmnaḥ kiñcid uccāraṇānantaraṁ kathañcid āpatitaṁ śabdāntaraṁ samādhāya paścān nāmāvaśiṣṭākṣara-grahaṇam ity evaṁ rūpaṁ, madhye śabdāntareṇāntaritam ity arthaḥ, rahitaṁ paścād avaśiṣṭākṣara-grahaṇa-varjitaṁ, kenacid aṁśena hīnam ity arthaḥ, tathāpi tārayaty eva. Suppose one is using the two words halaṁ riktam. Now the syllable ha in the word halam and the syllable ri in riktam are separately pronounced, but nevertheless the holy name will act because one somehow or other utters the word hari. Similarly, in the word rāja-mahiṣī, the syllables rā and ma appear in two separate words, but because they somehow or other appear together, the holy name rāma will act, provided there are no offenses. sarvebhyaḥ pāpebhyo ’parādhebhyaś ca saṁsārād apy uddhārayaty eveti satyam eva, kintu nāma-sevanasya mukhyaṁ yat phalaṁ tan na sadyaḥ sampadyate. tathā deha-bharaṇādy-artham api nāma-sevanena mukhyaṁ phalam āśu na sidhyatīty āha, tac ced iti. The holy name has so much spiritual potency that it can deliver one from all sinful reactions and material entanglements, but utterance of the holy name will not be very soon fruitful if done to facilitate sinning. tan nāma ced yadi dehādi-madhye nikṣiptaṁ, deha-bharaṇādy-artham eva vinyastam, tadāpi phala-janakaṁ na bhavati kim? api tu bhavaty eva, kintu atra iha loke śīghraṁ na bhavati, kintu vilambenaiva bhavatīty arthaḥ. The holy name is so powerful that it must act, but when one utters the holy name with offenses, its action will be delayed, not immediate, although in favorable circumstances the holy names of the Lord act very quickly.
