  1. The independence movement can not be compared to a political movement. We were fighting the biggest power in the world and doing it by non-violent means. No revolution. Tilak was not fighting for a Chief Minister's or Prime Minister's post. All that he got was years of imprisonment in the Mandalay prison. The necessity was to unify the people in the struggle for freedom. At that time there were three leaders in India. Lal, Pal and Bal as they were called. Lala Lajpat Rai in Punjab, Bipin Chandra Pal in Bengal and Bala Gangadhara Tilak in Bombay. Please read up about Indian's Freedom struggle. About how a novel Ananda Math by Bankim Chandra and the song Vande Matharam in the novel became a rallying point in the struggle for independence. How the concept of other India was evolved to unify the people. Anandamath - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Whatever you do please do realize the sacrifices that Tilak and others like him made to free India from hundreds of years of slavery. India is what it is today because of them. Indians did migrate to U.S and other countries with dignity because of them. They did not have to go as indentured laborers or slaves. It happened earlier in Mauritius, Fiji, and Surinam during the British rule.
  2. Ganesh Chaturthi was celeberated in private homes of Brahmins for a long time. This is the tradition which continues in South India now. No celebration at the village level. And Brahmins only. Tilak got the idea of the sarvajanic celeberations from Bengal where they have been having Saravjanic durga Puja since 1757. Durga Puja - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  3. Even Sadhana can become a mere ritual if you are not careful. You might have seen people with Japa malas in a bag reciting the mantras mechanically with eyes open. They will be looking at people who are around them and also listening to their conversation. Here Japa becomes a mere ritual. Bhakthi is to be combined with Shraddha. Samskaras are the main rituals of the Hindus. The line between faith and superstition is a very fine one. The general rule applied by most people is "What I believe is faith. What you believe is Superstition.":)
  4. The presence of two deities was always known. The broken and mended idol was kept separately. I remember worshiping there since the time I can remember. The problem is that most of this is only hearsay. No one can say authoritatively since all this happened long back and there is no recorded history.
  5. Thank you Sambya. I stand corrected. My information was from one Sri. Bose whose family has been associated with Sri Ramakrishna and the Dakshineswar temple for generations right from Takur's days. I lost touch with him when I left Kolkata in the eighties.
  6. I do not think so. The broken idol was not destroyed. But a new idol was installed. The idol being worshiped officially is the new one.
  7. Sadasiva samarambam, Dattatreya madyamam, usmathacharya paryantham, Vande Guru parambaram. Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara. Guru Sakshath Parambrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha.
  8. It is not necessary in India also. You can register your marriage. A Civil marriage. This procedure is only for those who want to be known as Hindus. The choice is yours. Arya Samaj has nothing to do with the Government of India. Their certificate of conversion is accepted by some of the temples in India who do not allow non-Hindus. We do have a non-Hindu as our Prime Minister. We had six Christian Chief ministers. I do not know the present count. It will take centuries before a non-Christian can become the President of the U.S.
  9. I have been practicing Pranayama and Meditation for a pretty long time as a part of my Spirtual Sadhana. Mantra with Pranayama and Mantra/Form meditation. I think The Hare Krishna mantra can also be done with Pranayama. And you can meditate on the form of Lord Krishna with the Mantra. Of course Yoga classes may not teach this. But has anyone tried? May be some Yoga teacher could help.

  12. I will be posting this Sloka in Sanskrit font and transliteration. I am working on it. Translation is out of question for very obvious reasons. About guarantees, it is easier to guarantee a Mantra or Sloka which gives you Moksha or salvation or whatever you want after life. People are not going to come back and question you. But it is not the case here.
  13. I am posting Chandika Dhalam which is effective against Bhuthas, Prethas, Pisachas and other forces. Please note 1. There is no guarantee. 2. The best time to recite this during Nishi time. That is 12.00 o'clock Midnight. 3. This is to be recited aloud. 4. I am not responsible if your neighbors mistake you for a Black Magician after hearing you recite this at Mid-Night. Jai MAA KALI !!! 14. An excellent web site for listening to and downloading Shayama Sangeet. These are all songs from the CD of Pannalal Bhattacharya. http://www.priyadarshan.org/audio/by/genre/kali_bhajans Jai MAA KALI !!!
  15. It will be there in any Devi Mahatmyam ( Durga Sapthasathi) book. Gita Press, Gorakpur.
  16. You can listen to some Abhang songs by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi here. http://ww.smashits.com/music/marathi/songs/481/abhang-by-pt-bhimsen-joshi.html
  17. Lalita Trishathi Stotra is considered as the most secret of the stotras and describes the three hundred names of Goddess Lalitha. The unique composition of the stotra is that each twenty names of Lalita Trishati start from each of the 15 letters which forms the Pancha Dasakshari Mantra. I am aware that in South India any Devi Upasana is viewed with a lot of fear. They seem to have more do nots than dos. Injunctions and Injunctions. There are no adverse effects of reciting this sloka. 1. Do not do is as a Japa. Only a Stotra. Leave the Nyasa part. No Sankalpam. 2. Recite it with Shraddha and Bhakthi. 3. Do not follow any of the cassettes where Stotras are converted to songs. Stotras and Mantras are not songs to be sung by people to earn money. This is easy if you know Sanskrit or Hindi. 4. At the end recite the Aparadha Kshamapana Stotra. Ashada Navaratri is running now. Today is Navami. Ashada Navaratri is special for MAA VARAHI and ASWARUDA. Tomorrow is Dhasami. Start then. Check the Thidhi part with the local Panchang and ensure that Dhasami has come.
  18. Narayanan. Before I proceed, I would like to sound a word of caution. Whenever you ask any question on any internet forum, you will get a number of opinions. In a technical forum it does not matter as long as it solves your problem. But when it comes to spiritual and religious matters there is no tested solution. It is more of belief and also past experience. But on the net you will never know the real qualifications of a poster. There are many who post just for the pleasure of refuting some one. It is quote possible that someone may post that whatever I have said is wrong and I do not know even the basics. We do get used to such personal attacks. We pray to MAA "Apavadhaharayai Namah." Please see this thread. A member has come with a different opinion. http://www.indiadivine.org/audarya/hindu-sadhanas/454225-om-hreem.html#post1148471 It is quite possible that one or more people may come out with a different solution to your problem. The fact that so far no one has done so does not assure that it would not happen in future. So please think about this before accepting my suggestions.
  19. Ashadi Ekadasi, or Ashada Devasayani Ekadashi, is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Ashada Month (June – July). Pandarpur Yatra culminates on Ashadi Ekadasi and is of great importance in Maharashtra. The day is of a great significance at the Lord Vithal Temple in Pandarpur. In 2009, the date of Ashadi Ekadasi is July 3. The Palaki of Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu, Palki of Sant Jnaneshwar from Alandi and numerous other Palaki (Palanquin) carrying the silver Padukas of various saints arrives at Lord Vithal Temple in Pandarpur on Ashadi Ekadasi after a 21-day journey. Lord Vithal is an incarnation of Lord Krishna and is a popular deity in Maharashtra and South India. Take a dip in the holy Chandrabhaga river and Have Dharshan of Lord Panduranga. http://nayna.in/blog/divine-grace/pandharpur-yatra-glories-of-lord-vithalvithoba/ http://www.indianetzone.com/2/pandharpur.htm A short collection of Abhangs by the great Sant Tukaram. http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/abhangs-a-short-collection/ Panduraranga Vittala, Pandarinatha Vittala, Vittala, Vittala, Vittala !!!
  20. I know Grahasthas who have been reciting Kadgamala Stotra for years. These beliefs have absolutely no foundation. They are not true. Do not bother about the destruction of the Sri Yantra. The concerned Astrologer should be worried about that. Not you. Excellent. Continue it. Do not be worried about the loss of the Sri Yantra. Pray to MAA. She will give you the strength to face all problems. She will alleviate them when the time is ripe. TRUST HER. Please do not listen to all and sundry regarding these matters. Do not take the articles in popular magazines as fact. They are half baked to say the least. Of course the same holds true of advice on the net. Do it for one Mandala. (41 days)
  21. I do not bother about the finer aspects of dualism. I am bothered only about Bhakthi. Meykandar preached Bhakthi. The Saivite Bhakthi movement started before that of the Vaishnavites. They also advocated complete surrender. That is all it matters to me. Bhakthi. You call it Dualistic, Non-Dualistic or any other name you fancy.
  22. None of the Saiva sects are bothered much about Philosophy. The sources are very scarce. You can believe in any one of the schools. In Tamil Nadu where most of the Tamil Siddhanta followers live, they leave these philosophies to the Smartas and Vaishnavas. Again in Saivism the emphasis is on Agamas.
  23. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaiva_Siddhanta Meykandar lived before Madhavacharya. The other schools are Veera Saivas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veerashaivas Kashmiri Saivism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmir_%C5%9Aaivism Goraknath Sampradhaya http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorakshanath Again these have sub sects. Except for the worship of Shiva it would be very difficult to find any common Philosophy in these sects. Another noteworthy feature is that all of them reject the Brahmin caste. In fact except Kashmiri Saivism which has only a very small following, all the others are almost entirely non-Brahmin.
