method called astrology. Apart from this some other basic concepts

that are used by Vedic culture such as Panchabootha (Earth-

Water-Fire-Air-Sky), Triguna (Sathwa-Rajas-Thamas) etc are also

    well utilized in astrology.

Of the two approaches such as Analytical approach and

Wholistic approach, Astrology and Ayurveda is closer to wholistic

approach. As these two methods (Analytical and Wholistic) are

fundamental to the thought process itself, why should they compete

each other? Why should the branches of study that are part of

wholistic approach try fruitlessly to become part of science (a product

of analytical approach)? Even physics should resort to the use

of concepts such as stress, strain, force, time etc. Ayurveda cannot

stand away from the fact that the use of its methods should cure

the patient. The world we see is composed of both facts and concepts

(matter and mind). Because of all this, the analytical approach

that takes facts as the starting point and the wholistic approach

that takes concepts at the starting point should ultimately meet and

help each other to the ultimate fulfillment of human knowledge.

They are like yin and yang, the opposing counter parts of one and

the same thing. As both of them are the foundation of thought

process itself - one defeating the other is impossible.

Don’t think that even this classification such as Analytical and

Wholistic is complete. Don’t ever think that you can bring all the

subjects under the sun into this classification. As I told earlier, all

the classifications are nothing but the creations of human mind.

The truth would remain outside all classifications. In this case also

it is true. (Just think of bringing subjects such as art and history

into this classification. You will see what I mean!!) A Vedic astrologer

should be ready to approach astrology with such realizations,

because astrology is part of a wholistic approach to study

the rhythm of time and make probabilistic predications.

Hope I have succeeded in conveying the idea that I had.

  2.

the rhythm of time impacts the living organisms and their life incidents

(100% i.e. to its minutest details) astrology will also be discarded.

Till then whatever opposing arguments originate, this

    branch of knowledge will prevail.

Even those who accept that Psychology Ayurveda Homeopathy

etc are wholistic methods, tend to reject astrology. Why? They

ask - How can you say that astrology is based on a fundamental

concept like Mind, Tridosha or Vital force used by other branches

of wholistic approach? Can you consider Sun Moon and Planets

as concepts? Signs (Rasis) such as Aries, Taurus are the divisions

of sky - how can they be concepts? All who sincerely study the

ancient Vedic astrology knows the answers to such questions. I

    will explain.

Think that we collect the common characteristics or life incidents

of children born, when the sun is in some particular sign.

Instead of considering these characteristics as that of time, they

are projected to sun. Sun is considered the significator of all such

characteristics. Later when the sun in the same sign, if a child is

born, we predict that, that child will have those predefined (precollected)

characteristics. It is a sort of give and take policy. The

technique of projecting the characteristics those are not of sun to

sun, and later taking them back from sun. Here the sun becomes

not the sun that we see with our naked eyes. Sun becomes a concept.

This sun is the god Siva, father, gold, soul, courage, success,

light, king, govt. service, light, forest, peak, hill... and so many

other things. Sun is man, middle-aged, bald, and the significator

of diseases due to heat. All these ideas are formed thus. Not only

the Sun, Moon and the Planets becomes concepts in this way.

What ever is called significators in astrology, they are all concepts

(Hypothetical constructs to mould the truth). Yes, in astrology Planets,

Houses and Signs are called significators. Therefore Signs,

Houses and Planets are the basic concepts used in wholistic study

a useless subject. By using the classifications such as conscious -

subconscious -unconscious, id-ego-superego (or the Indian classical

division chitt-budhi-ahankara), we believe that psychology

leads us towards truth. All the branches of knowledge that originates

from wholistic method use one or more non-provable concepts

as its foundation, which are accepted based on their usefulness.

Psychology is no exception to that. The ancient Indians used

the word Sasthra (ancient advice) to indicate such branches of

study. Psychology that speaks about Mind, Ayurveda that speaks

about Tridosha (Vatha, Pitha and Kapha), Homeopathy and

Naturopath that speaks about Vital force, Astrology that speaks

about Planets and Signs (Rasis) all are the product of wholistic

approach. In this sense subjects such as Psychology, Ayurveda,

Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Astrology etc does not come under

the broad classification called Science. Still we know that nobody

will dare to say that Psychology, Ayurveda etc are useless. In the

view of ancient people sasthras leads us to truth, they helps us to

comprehend truth more clearly, they helps us to know truth that

are useful for our existence. Astrology that depends on wholistic

approach is no exception to this. In this study method called

wholistic approach, firstly to cover all our ignorance about the

details of something and to help the further study, some basic concepts

are formulated. This hypothetical foundation becomes a

springboard for further study. Here also psychology can be taken

as a suitable example. When we know 100% about the processes

and behavior of brain and body, when we understands which

chemical reactions leads to each thought and emotion, when we

could clearly state how and where memory is encoded (with its

minutest details), when we attain the ability to control all these

using chemical and physical mechanisms (machine driven or otherwise)

we could discard the concept of mind and psychology.

Till then psychology will exist, no matter how ever the scientists

express their reaction to it. Similarly when we understands how

  4.

difference in the thinking approach. These are two different thinking

methods. Most of the braches of knowledge we have today is

the product of one of these approaches.

Science is the product of analytical approach. We used to say

that science tries to study everything by dividing it into smaller

and smaller parts. Science has its own method (based on analytical

approach) called Scientific method. Data collection, concept

formation, analysis, verification are part of it. A theory is the final

output. These theories may later herald as the true mirrors or knowledge

(laws), or based on new data input refined or discarded. Thus

science is a continuous search for truth. Starting from small laws

that controls our daily life, unstopping it searches for a single law

that comprehends everything and describes the whole world. Some

theories that are refined further and further become stronger rationally

and experimentally, and heralded as laws, that becomes the

foundation of science and promotes further study. Physics, Chemistry,

Botany, Zoology etc are all branches of science. Maths even

though does not follow the scientific method, has a systematic

foundation and is a product of analytical approach. “Fact to generalization”

is the prime motto of analytical approach. But wholistic

study method is an entirely different one.

The wholistic approach also had given raise to many branches

of knowledge. Let us start from the most common example - i.e.

Psychology. Psychology says that all the mental diseases (which

may have even physical symptoms) are caused by unhealthiness

of mind. In other words Psychology finds its foundation in the

concept called Mind. If we knew all about the processes in brain,

nervous system, and the chemical reactions in brain and body this

concept of mind will not be necessary. We feel the Mind because

of the combined and coordinated function of all these. Even though

we cannot find Mind by subdividing the body in to its minutest

parts (i.e. by physical analysis) nobody will say that psychology is

  5.

All these classifications are there or not - the time will prevail.

Existing always there - beyond... Yes, all the classifications are

wrong. But human brain cannot live without them. That is why it

is said that every branch of study is nothing but “attempts to comprehend

the incomprehensible and complete world with fragmented

    classifications”.

In a fragmented mirror the reflected world would also be fragmented.

It is the fundamental limitation of human brain or mind.

That is why it is said, “the eternal truth is realized only in a mindless

state”. The Vedic verse that says, “where the mind turns back

with the unreachable words (etho vacha nivarthanthe aprapya

manasa saha) - that is truth” also points in this direction. Due to all

this we cannot but accept the fundamental error of trying to comprehend

the non-fragmented existence (world), with the fragmented

mind. Can’t we at least avoid the second error, i.e. trying to limit

astrology into some predefined boxes such as science or art? Can’t

we avoid such arguments as whether astrology is art or science?

Try to comprehend astrology in its true theoretical foundation. View

science as science and art as art, don’t mix-up all. Like humanity

is a quality of man neither limited by class-creed-color-religioncast

etc, astrology cannot be limited within the classifications such

    as science or art.

When I see the efforts of people to classify astrology into predefined

moulds such as science or art, I am just feeling compassionate,

because even these classifications are unscientific and nonsystematic.

A relevant doubt is, how to classify all the subjects

under human study. The thought process of human mind can be

broadly classified into two - 1) Analytical 2) Wholistic. The astrologer

refers to this duality using the words ooha-apoha,

mathematician’s uses the words Differentiation -Integration, and

others uses the technical term Analytical approach-Wholistic approach.

What ever be the terms used they point to the fundamental

  6.

    Part -I

    Base of Astrology

Vedic astrology is a subject originated in Vedas. It is a branch

of knowledge, ancient as Vedas. Astrology is composed of 3

Skandhas (main branches), such as Sidhantha (Astronomy and

Maths), Samhitha (Omens) and Hora (Horoscope-Horary and

    Muhoortha).

Astrology was also called Kalavidhana Sastha (Ancient advice

about Time and its divisions). To determine the nature of time

(past-present and future), to find out how the flow of time impacts

humans and other animals and plants, and their life containing

pleasures and pains, is the aim of this branch of knowledge. It is

    the root purpose of Astrology.

Time is the cause for everything that is good and bad (pleasure

or pain) in life. Time is the cause of all movements. Even thought

is a time bound (It is also a movement). Even thought cannot break

away form the boundaries caused by time, your past present and

experience. To predict the happenings (incidents) of life, we should

study time. But we cannot see, touch, or hear time, but can know

and comprehend it with our mind and analyze it. This is possible

only because we can observe movements. It is by watching movements

that the concept of time originates in our mind. The movements

on Earth (The flying of birds, fall of withered leaves, the

flowering of plants etc), the sunrise and sunset, the waxing and

waning of moon, if you watch in detail (even the subtleties in

cosmic movements) the movements of planets - every thing shows

us the existence of time. Time is the cause of movements. It is the

cause for the movement of Earth, Moon and Planets. It is the cause

for life and death of plants, animals, and humans, it is the cause of

all our worldly conditions - birth, marriage, accident, disease, death,

  7. Dear Swapnil see the highlighted points. This what visti is talking about.

    1) Start from Rahu

    2) Traverse the chart in the zodiacal direction. This is the

    normal

direction that the planets move in, and goes from Aries to Taurus

    to

    Gemini to Cancer etc.

3.a)If the next entity encountered is Ketu, this means

    that

all the planets are between Ketu and Rahu. This is Kala Sarpa Yoga.

3.b)If the next entity encountered is a planet other than

Ketu, this means that the planets are all between Rahu and Ketu.

    this is kalamrita yoga.

My visual crutch for remembering this is to visualize planets

    going

towards either Rahu or Ketu. If there are all hurling towards

    Rahu,

the native is veering towards Rahu's materialism, which makes it

Kala Sarpa yoga, since Rahu represents the Sarpa, or poison. On

    the

other hand, if the planets are all moving towards Ketu, it is Kala

Amrita yoga, since Ketu represents Moksha or Amrita.

My outline above is based on the progression of the planets, but

    you

get the same result if you consider the movement of Ra and Ke

    instead.

    1) Start from Rahu again

    2) Traverse the direction that Rahu (and Ketu) move in, i.e. go in

the anti-zodiacal direction. This means if you start from Aries,

    go

    to Pisces, Aquarius etc.

3.a) If you encounter a planet other than ketu, this means that

    this

planet is being "swallowed up" by Rahu in its progression - again

    indicating Kala Sarpa yogam.

3.b) If the first planet you encounter is Ketu, and then you

encounter the other planets, this means that Ketu is "swallowing

    up"

the other planets in its movement, i.e. the desire for Moksha is

comsuming the indications of all other planets, and the native

    will

eventually reach Moksha. This is Kal

  10. Dear Anusha ji ,

Ang pradikshna is done to appease the diety for grant of special favours it can be done before or after such wish or boon has been granted, usually a number is not attached to such a practice.

    The Anga Pradhakshina"

The command was very stern. There could be no way of avoiding or escaping from the severest of all the rituals. "Lie down and roll over, quick, very quick"! This stern command was coming from my very old grand mother. My mother, sisters, and cousins were all looking down at me, as I sat down. I still hesitated to lie down. The flooring was done with stone slabs and they were very hard and rough. There was no protective clothing to give some cover to my tender skin all over body, except a small wet dhothi, tied down my waist. I was not allowed to have any drinks or light food. I was not supposed to eat or drink anything until I had fulfilled the rituals. In the early morning hours, I had just come out of the chill waters of the temple tank. I was not allowed to use a towel and dry up. I was supposed to go through the ordeal fresh from the water.

As I was sitting down still hesitating, defying the stern commands, I saw somebody, may be in his middle age, rolling over and reaching near me, i.e, the starting point, and was overtaking me. A couple of their relatives were guiding him, least he moves away from the stipulated pathway around the temple. For an elderly man, I thought, it is okay. But I was just 11 year old. I shouted back; "why of all the children, I had been asked to go through this ordeal? Why not others too, follow me?" My mother tried to pacify me, "Please Cheenu! (This is my pet name used by family people) "Try to understand. The vow had been taken for your sake. This is meant for your welfare. Years ago when you were still very tiny child, you had been afflicted by a severe disease, and we were informed by Doctors that the disease was beyond medical cure. Hence as a last resort, we had prayed to Lord Guruvayurappan, that Cheenu would undertake "Anga Pradakshinam" Only you should undertake this ritual, and there is no possibility of being substituted by anybody else. Please, Cheenu, try to understand and go ahead cheerfully, Please".

As I was still hesitating, I found some more devotees rolling over. The pressure was too much on me. I had been brought up in traditional orthodox way of life. My respect to elders, and also my Love for God, prevailed on me to just make a try. I stretched on my back. I was asked to keep both my hands over the head, palms together, and then roll over. Hands should not come as a support to the body. "Angam" means parts of our body, and "Pradakshinam" means going round in a clockwise manner. All the limbs and other parts of our body should be in direct contact on the rocky surface, as we roll over.

As I rolled over one time, I thought that all the devotees thronged in the temple were just watching me and enjoying fun. In fact nobody took notice of me, since I was not the only one doing this penance. Many others were seen rolling over and over. The elders were giving directions continuously. I was being constantly directed to chant the name of Lord "Narayana, Narayana…" with each movement. "Don’t look around, just keep on rolling chanting the Divine name. Otherwise your efforts will be wasted" I suddenly developed another fear. If I do not stick to their directions, the efforts could be nullified, and I might be asked to do it all over again. At all costs, I did not want this to happen. Better, to finish of in one stretch.

Slowly and steadily, I was progressing. At times, I used to deviate from the circular path around the temple yard. The cousins were guiding me and pushing me to the correct path, whenever I had deviated. The temple was vibrating with hysterical sounds of "Narayana, Narayana, Narayana….", chanted by hundreds of devotees. I could also hear some devotional music coming over the PA system. Even the hard hearted or shy type devotee could melt over the atmosphere in the temple, and the devotion is certainly bound to come out. I was no exception. As I moved on and on, I started to accept the situation and undertook the penance in good faith. Three fourth of the round is over, and I was nearing the starting point. ‘Soon, it will be over’, I thought. Chanting the name of "Narayana", I almost reached the spot from where I had started, and I was very eager to get up. When I tried to get up, I was pushed back. I was in for a great shock. It was not over yet! I was told to go ahead and continue with "Anga Pradakshina" When I thought it was over, I was told that I have to make two more rounds, total three rounds of Anga Pradakshina!

Though I was physically tired, this time, I did not have any reservation or hesitation. I knew well that there was no way out. I continued rolling over and over, chanting "Narayana, Narayana…" At the end of the third round, I was dead tired, and my body was aching. My mother held on to me with loving care, and helped me to get up. I could see drops of tears in her eyes. This could be on two counts. One reason could be of her concern for me. Another reason could be out of joy that I had fulfilled her vows. The rough surface had made most of the damage to my tender skin. For while I could not stand up. I was shivering and feeling fatigue. I was very hungry. My body has become dirty. I was asked to take yet another dip in the holy temple tank. This time my body was dried out using a neat towel.

The change of dhothi did not bring comfort to me. The strict rules in the temple, stipulates that male members, including boys, should not ware any dress or clothe above the waists. In the early morning, I had to endure the chill weather, and then stand in the Que., to have Darshan of Lord Guruvayurappan. There was a long line, and all the members of the family had to stand up for over an hour to reach the sanctum.

The sanctum consisted of three compartmentalized rooms. Electric lights are banned inside the sanctum. But there were several lamps burning from oil or ghee. At the end of tunnel type last room, I could see dimly the figure of a deity, which was just about two feet high. A priest was doing some poojas. We were not allowed to stand for a while. We had to be content with a just a glimpse of the deity, as we were moving across the steps of the sanctum. My mother felt happy, that she could present her son, in front of Lord Narayana, after fulfilling her vows.

Guruvayur is famous pilgrim center in Kerala in the southern parts of India. The state is known as "Gods own land". The breath taking scenery and natural landscape with backwaters, the big groves of coconut trees, and rich paddy fields, with back the drop of high peak mountains make Kerala very beautiful.

There are several important temples in this state, and Guruvayur is in the top in list attracting millions of pilgrims round the year. In India, for every major temple there is a "Sthala Purana" (the story indicating the importance of the particular temple and the place). The temple of Guruvayur has also got a history. It is said that the Idol, in this temple was formerly installed in the Divine abode of Lord Krishna in Dwaraka. At the end of Dwapara Yuga, Lord Krishna returns to Vaikunta, after finishing His earthly sojourn. The Divine City of Dwaraka, did not lost long afterwards. The city got immersed in the high sea, which is known as "Pralaya". The Guru of the Devas, "Bruhaspathi" and Lord Vayu (The wind God) retrieved the Idol of Narayana, and carried it along the cost, down south, and was installed in a village in Kerala. The name, "Guruvayur" had derived from the fact that the idol was carried down and installed by "Guru" and "Vaayu".

It is also believed that Adi Shankara had visited this temple several times, and it was Adi Shankara Himself who had laid down the procedures of worship in this temple of Guruvayur.

As we started our journey back to Palakkad, some 80 kilometers away, the bus did not make it easy for us. There were more problems and delays. Those days, there were no gas engines for the buses. The buses were provided with coal fired boiler behind it, and this boiler energized the engine to pull the bus. The technical snag and non-availability of mechanics, made things difficult for us. We had to travel a good length of over 20 kilometer by a bullock cart, and then a train travel towards our destination!

In the end, there was satisfaction for my mother and for her mother too! There was cheer in our family. But how can I forget those dreary experiences, which I had to go through on that particular morning at Guruvayur!

The Mystery of Kal Sarpa Yoga ‘unveiled’

    Introduction

In the recent times, Kal Sarpa Yoga has become the most common point of discussion in the country. It is said that this is most ominous combination, all the beneficial roles of planets are destroyed & the native having Kal Sarpa yoga in his chart is said to be suffering through all kind of hardships throughout his life, while his hardship doesn’t yield any good result.

Now let’s see what is the combination of this Kal Sarpa yoga?

It is said that if all the planets are between Rahu & Ketu, then it becomes Kal Sarpa Yoga, giving result to an ominous combination. However, books are being published under this name, with suggested remedies etc. while astrologers keep themselves busy by discussing about this topic in newspapers, television & internet with the relevant information they have about the effects of this yoga.

The word, “Kal Sarpa” itself frightens anybody as the “Kal” (meaning a bad period) takes the form of “Sarpa” (Snake) & troubles the native. For no reason, even the astrologers of today are talking about the frightening effects of Kal Sarpa Yoga. Some of the results, which they opine are, the native’s fate is damned, he cannot earn name & fame in his/hers life, may not get a job or his/hers work atmosphere will never be good, may suffer from financial problems, problems in having offspring etc. all such craps.

According to the modern “orators” of Kal Sarpa Yoga, if all the planets are within the half of Rahu & Ketu or if one or more planets are with Rahu or Ketu, while the others are in between, then it is, “Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga” (Total Kal Sarpa yoga). However if six planets are in between Rahu & Ketu, while another one is located in the other half, then it is termed as, “Ardha Kal Sarpa Yoga (Partial Kal Sarpa Yoga).

Some of them say that people born with Partial Kal Sarpa Yoga lead more disastrous life than people having Total Kal Sarpa Yoga.

    Searching the classics for

    the existence of KSY

Whenever a problem arises, we consult the classics of Vedic astrology, but in this case the problem is that we don’t find anything regarding Kal Sarpa Yoga in Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Jaiminisutram, Brihat Jatakam, Uttar Kalamrita, Phaladeepika, Jatak Parijat, Sarbartha Chintamani, Bhabartharatnakar, Jatakabharanam, Sanketnidhi, Bhabakutuhalam, Manasagari Paddhati, even the modern Astro books like, jataktatwa etc. don’t speak anything about this Kal Sarpa Yoga.

Pundit Shree P.S. Sastri discussed about Kal Sarpa Yoga in the Astrological magazine published from Bangalore in the volume of December 1965, October 1987 & September 1994. While discussing about KSY, Mr. Sastri quoted a sloka, but didn’t mention about its root. However he admitted that classics don’t talk KSY. The sloka he quoted is as under:-

agre rähuù ante ketu sarbe madhyagatä grahäù|

    yogam kälasarpäkhyam nåpa çasya binäçanam||

-the meaning is quite clear. If rahu is at front & ketu is at last while all other planets are in between, then this combination is called Kal Sarpa Yoga & results into death of king of destruction of grains.

It is clear that the above mentioned sloka has nothing to do with personal astrology (Jatak Jyotish) & is related to mundane astrology (Rashtriya Jyotish).

In that same magazine, another writer supported this combination by refering it to classics like Brihat Jatakam by Varahamihira & he wrote about Sarpa Yoga, the condition of which is Sun, Mars & Saturn in kendras while the rest of the planets in houses other than kendras, & this combination is mentioned in the chapter of nabhas Yoga of Brihat Jatakam, Saravali by KalyanVarma, & in the texts of Badarayan, Manish & Garga etc.

We know that Varahamihira has discussed about the existence of Sarpa Yoga in his Brihat Jatakam(chapter of Nabhas Yogas). According to him, if malefics are in Kendras then that combination is known as “Sarpa Yoga”, & he has taken the name of Maharshi Parasara to support this yoga. Bhattotpal, commentator of Brihat Jatakam, also named Mahrshi Manish & Badarayan. However, this yoga didn’t include Rahu & Ketu, as in the texts of Varahamihira, Rahu or Ketu hasn’t been accepted or any importance. Bhattotpal has made it clear about the condition for Sarpa Yoga, he says,

“yeñu keñu triñu kendreñu päpakñaya süryabhaumasaurä tabanti na kaçcit kendre bhabati saumya graha tadä sarpo näm yogo bhabiçyati”

-that means if Sun, Saturn & Mars occupy then it is Sarpa Yoga (while other planets are not in kendras). Dr. P.S. Shastri has said the same in the Astrological magazine of June, 1994. So we can see rahu or ketu has got nothing to do with this ominous yoga viz., Sarpa Yoga.

We can deduce that Kal Sarpa Yoga has no reference in classical texts, nor supported by any astrological texts, because Maharshi Parasar, Jaimini, Varahamihira, Ramanujacharya, Kalidas, Baidyanath Dixit, Benkateswar Daivajna, Mantreswar, Chuntiraj or famous astrologers didn’t accept this yoga.

    Results of Rahu & Ketu

It is generally considered that one having Kal sarpa Yoga will have a ruined life will devastating results, as all other planets start acting as malefics as they lose their potential to do good--- thus violating the basic rule as prescribed by Maharshi Parasara. In his book Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Maharshi Parasara has told us how to analyse the results of Rahu & Ketu-

“yad yad bhävagato rähuù ketuçca janane nåëäm|

yad yad bhäbeçasaàyuktastat falaà pradiçedalam||” ,

Rahu & ketu will give results according to their houses they are placed & according to the conditions the lord of those houses that are placed in a given chart.

If rahu & ketu, who do not have any power of their won to give results, then how the good results of planets placed between Rahu & Ketu will nullify does not have any reasonable answer.

It is clear according to Maharshi Parasara, that Rahu & Ketu does not have anything of their own(as they are Nodes).

So we cant agree that presence of all planets between Rahu & ketu will nullify all the good results of the planets placed, & results into Kal Sarpa Yoga.

Without any doubt, Rahu & Ketu are natural malefics and in Brihat Parasara Hora sastra we find many yogas formed by Rahu & Ketu alongwith any other malefics, but no yogas are mentioned, which is formed by Rahu & Ketu.

We know that a planet’s role (both as a benefic & a melefic) depends upon its nature, according to lordships, according to its position, according to combinations formed.

As for Rahu & Ketu, they can’t give results according to lorshipd, but they have a major role to play according to their placements. If Rahu & Ketu is posited in a benefic’s house or related to any benefic, then definitely it will give good results, which has been seen in many of the charts.

Now let us discuss on Rahu & ketu according to various classical literatures.

In Laghu Parasari, in 2nd Chapter, 8th sloka, it is clearly said that if Rahu or Ketu are posited in Kendras or Trikonas & if they are related to lords of Kendras or Trikonas, then they become Rajyogakaraks.

As you know, malefics if occupy Upachayas(3,6,10,11 houses from Lagna) then they give good results. So if Rahu & Ketu occupies the above said houses, no doubt they will give good results.

In Manasagari Paddhati, a very similar sloka is very appropriate in the current context of discussion. In that very text, presence of Rahu in Vrishabh, Kark, Simha & in Kanya have been eulogised & it is said that Rahu acts as a Rajyoga karaka. The results have been seen in many natives life, where Rahu is posted in any of the above signs of zodiac.

In Bhavarthratnakar by Shree Ramanujacharya, we find that presence of Rahu in 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, & in Kendras & konas & presence of ketu in 3rd bhava is considered to be auspicious & there it is said that Rahu & ketu in their own dasas will give results of similar to rajyoga (9th Chapter, Sloka-3-4). In the same text, Shree Ramanujacharya has considered Rahu to be a Rajyoga Karak, even if he occupies the 7th bhava.

As said earlier in the same text viz., Laghu Parasari it is said that Rahu & ketu if occupies the kendras & konas & even if they are not related to kendra or trikona lords, still in their own antar dasas will give results similar to Raj Yogas (chapter 4, sloka 8).

While discussing about Rahu bhukti under Rahu dasa, Maharshi Parasar says in his book that it is always auspicious to have Rahu in Kark, Dhanush, Kanya or Brischik (chapter 41 sloka 1) & in Shani Dasa Rahu Bhukti, he says that it is auspicious to have Rahu in Mesh, Brishabh, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Dhanush or in Meen (chapter 43 sloka 67).

As you all know that Sarbarth Chintamani is a good reference while analysing dasa results. In the same text the dasa results of rahu has been said to be good, provided it is posted in Mesh, Brishabh, Karkata, Kanya, Dhanu or in Meen (chapter 16, sloka 21 & 22).

According to Phaladeepika dasa of Rahu is good when it is posted in signs like Kanya, Brischik or Meen (chapter 19, sloka 16).

Moreover according to Maharshi Parasara, one should predict about ones wealth from the position of Rahu (chapter 14 sloka 19). It is expected from a learner of Jyotish to know that a well-placed Rahu in his dasa gives wealth.

While speaking about the dasa results of Rahu when it is well placed, he says- All are beneficial for the native, be it regarding to Kingdom, begetting son, money, wealth, vehicles, construction of new home, patronised by the king etc. (chapter 36 sloka 42,46-49).

Both Parasara & Jaimini are of the opinion that when Ketu is auspiciously placed it might result into Moksha.

All these above said conditions are stated to prove that Rahu & Ketu are not always inauspicious & not at all responsible to minimise all the good effects of planets posted between them. So, Kal Sarpa Yoga is not established by the astrological writings & none of the classics mention about it.

Predicting ones future using this Yoga

Many of the Astrologers, who all believe this Yoga, tries to prove their prediction while using his yoga & if those natives have experienced anything ominous, then they state that Kal Sarpa Yoga is responsible for such ill effects. If one yoga is enough to nullify all good results & if ones relies upon a single yoga, then there is no point in talking about such yoga which is irrelevent.

All the charts published in the “Astrological Magazine” regarding Kal Sarpa Yoga, was gone through by another learned astrologer & in the same Magazine, he said that all the ill results caused to those concerned persons are not due to Kal Sarpa Yoga, but due to the presence of planets in inauspicious places.

    Some examples

Still, we are ready to accept such yoga, which is not supported by any classics. But for general belief, we need to give examples for proving what we decide, as we do in Science & in Arts.

It is generally considered that one having Kal Sarpa Yoga suffers throughout his life, while “Ardha” Kal Sarpa Yoga is much more “poisonous” than “Purna” Kal Sarpa Yoga. Is it relevent to the present situation?? Or is it possible?? But we are surprised to find horoscopes of many famous personalities who had Kal Sarpa Yoga according to the “present” astrologers, still they had no problem in achieving success.

Some example of Purna Kal Sarpa yoga:-

    1) Shree Shree Mahaprabhu Chaitanyadev- Simha Lagna, Moon & Ketu in Lagna, Sun, Mercury, Venus & Rahu in 7th, rest of the planets between Rahu & Ketu.

    2) Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru- Karkata lagna, Rahu in 12th, Jupiter with Ketu in 6th, rest of the planets between Rahu & Ketu.

    3) Scientist Dr. K.S. Krishnan- Mesh Lagna, Mercury & Rahu in 9th, Ketu in 3rd, rest of the planets between rahu & Ketu.

There are plenty of examples but I don’t want it to be unnecessarily large, so have refrained from giving more examples of Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga.

Now, some examples of Ardha Kal Sarpa yoga or

    “Bhanga Kal Sarpa Yoga”: -

    1) “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi- Except Jupiter, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

    2) Author of the book “Bande Mataram” Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay- Except Saturn, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

    3) Adi Shankaracharya- Except Saturn, all are between Rahu & Ketu.

    4) Swami Ramanujacharya- Except Jupiter, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

    5) Singer Hemanta Mukhopadhayay (better known as Hemant Kumar)- Except Mars, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

    The list is endless.

    Conclusion

Thus we can deduce, that Kal Sarpa Yoga is nothing but a “cultivated” yoga, only to scare people who come to seek astrological advice. As the examples given above it is true that whatever incomplete they felt in their life, was due to planetary position, not due to the so called “Kal Sarpa Yoga”. I have a number of horoscopes where there is presence of Kal Sarpa Yoga, but those persons have felt the height of success in their life, but inclusion of those examples will unnecessarily make this work pretty large.

I have tried my best to support my article with relevent sources. Please forgive the shortcomings, if any.

  14. Dear Sir

in the kaal sarp or kaal amrit yoga if jupiter is breaking this yoga then

1.it would mean through some guru or spiritual organisation. am i

right? so should such a person be advised to join organisations like

    ISCKON or others?

Visti: It means they should get a Guru. Whether this is through an organisation or not is not really of concern unless the particular planet (Jupiter) is in or lording the fourth from arudha lagna.

2.in female chart jupiter would also signify marriage or husband. am i

    right in my assumption?

    Visti: Specifically husband.

    3. is it possible to time the beginning and end of kaal sarp yoga in a

chart especially when there are planets breaking it.

    Visti: Yes.

    4. in the following chart ketu occupies the upapada so is it true that

when ketu accupies the upapada or any arudha pada then counting of

    houses from UL is reversed?

    Visti: Yes.

    5. is it true that in the following chart wearing a green emerald for

mercury would be dangerous and hence not advisable as its placed in

    12th from the AL?

birth details:29th november, 1987. 00:55 am jaipur, rajasthan, india.

Visti: It would certainly risk causing job loss hence no advised.

    6. does placement of UL in house affected by ksy as in this chart

imply that marriage will play a role in breaking the ksy?

Visti: If there are benefics there then yes. If none then the Marriage itself can add to the bondage of the KSY.

7.is it true that if planets breaking the kaal sarp yoga if

debilitated in navamsha, would be ineffective in breaking the yoga due

    to their weakness?

Visti: You can say that. I.e. the person who is in the Talas due to Ananta (nodes) blocking the rays of the Sun and Moon, and there fore requires the help of Ananta or the Mahavidya to come out of these Talas. And if that Mahavidya feels that he has done adharma to Vishnu, then its very difficult to overcome the Dosha. But I know one person who did it in 3 months... my wife. She has, just like you mentioned, Venus breaking the Kala Amrita Yoga, and Venus is also debilitated in Navamsa. Her example is given in the article on my website.

    8. is it true that partners with kaal sarp yoga or kaal amrita yoga

tend to make better partners due to karmic connections, considering

this factor in isolation from the rest.

Visti: Funny question. Rather the point is that 'birds of the same feather tend to flock together'. It doesn't mean the partnerships are good as a result... this is not a means of performing match making.

  15. Conditions for KSY AND KAY.

A simple analysis to identify the same.

    Let me clarify.

First of all, check the following conditions.

    1) All planets between Rahu and Ketu

    2) No planet is with Rahu

    3) No planet is with Ketu

    4) No planet in the Lagna

    5) No planet in the 7th house

If any of the conditions above are not met, the chart does not

    have

either KSY or KAY. (Kal sarp Yoga, Kal amrita yoga)

If ALL of these conditions are met, the next step is to see which

    of

the yogas it is, KSY or KAY. The process for that is, as I

    mentioned

    before,

This is Kal

  16. Nava Naaga Stotra

The natives who are under the grip of Kala Sarpa Dosha, Naga Dosha, Rahu and Ketu Dosha are advised to recite the following mantra daily 22 times to ward of the negative effects and to overcome hurdles. The Sthotra have to be recited both in the morning and in evening.

The best remedy suggested by Sanjay Ji for the Kaala Amrita Yoga (KAY)

is to read about the "Matsya Avataram" and also to recite the mantra

Today, after about 3 years, I have found the answer to my own question

about the Mantra, so thought of sharing with you.

  18. Dear all,

Now that we know the types and forms of Kal Sarpa Yoga, let us see few examples pf this yoga and a general understanding, how to deal with it.

Kala Sarpa Yoga/Kala Amrita Yoga(KSY/KAY) When all planets are enclosed between Rahu & Ketu, or Ketu & Rahu respectively.

    E.g. of KSY

Nelson Mandela, Carl Sagan, Pope Jules II, Pope Gregory XIII, Benito Mussolini (Dictator of Italy from 1922-1943) etc,

    E.g. of KAY

    Singer Yesudas, Margaret Thatcher, G.W.Bush,

People with KSY or KAY like status but one or more planet outside.

Mahatma gandhi ji, Tony Blair, Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Adolph hitler, Ronald reagan, Bill Clinton, Deepak Chopra, Bill gates, and the list is endless.

    Quote: B V Raman:

Rahu must occupy one of the first six houses from the lagna, i.e., bhava 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

Kala-Sarpa yoga does not apply even if one planet is outside the Rahu -Ketu Axis.

If one planet is outside the axis results are good in the form of leadership or activism for social change.Though the person himself is in the trap of excessive desire, he is able to cut loose and help those who are helpless or not in a position to cut loose.

E.g. Mahatma Gandhi jee, Jupiter is outside, which made him world class compassionate leader. (This is true for Jupiter or Venus)

All The above leaders have KSY/KAY with one planet outside or planets occupying same rasi as Rahu or Ketu.

Literary Meaning: "Kal" means "earth-time" and "sarpa" means "serpent".

One view is, it is actually Sarpa energy which is again psychic energies of gods and goddesses of underworld, and it is believed that these sarpa are immense, ancient serpent-like deities who control the psychic shield around our planet Earth.Sarpa are entities, of a much higher vibration than human beings, and definitely not to be confused with the common reptile snakes! This energy can be controlled by psychic skill, that means one has to condition his or her mind in such a way that the negative thoughts emanating from deep within are neutralized and do not effect the psyche of the person, to pull yourself above mundane happenings.

History: Rahu and Ketu gained importance in the Jyotisha around 600-800 AD i.e. long after the classics. like BPHS, Saravali, etc.

Beliefs: Kala-Sarpa yoga is associated with dreadful experiences like suffering from delays, hardships, obsessive habits, excessive desires, poisons, catastrophes, sudden and disastrous changes in every aspect of life, homelessness, not suitable for marriage, employment etc.

(Cause for manipulation by few astrologers. )

    Cancellation:

Even if one planet is outside the Rahu -Ketu axis.

    If other Raja yoga’s exist.

If other planets are strong and corresponding dasa is in effect.

If planets present in the same house with higher degrees than Rahu or Ketu.

    If Lagna is outside.

Actual effect: During Rahu-Ketu dasa, and transits particularly if Rahu is in lagna. Roller coaster kind of life with great falls after great achievements.

People with KSY/KAY are very sensitive and to defend themselves they use means which are Anti to normal society. If they channel this energy in a proper way they can follow people like Deepak Chopra.

During Rahu/Ketu periods, People with KSY/KAY can have severe identity crisis and should take precautions by monitoring their negative feelings particularly in case of criticism from others.

Strong planets: If other planets are strong, people with KSY/KAY live a normal life with normal career and families etc.

Worst effects: when Rahu in the lagna so Ketu is in 7, if married both spouses are affected and might take to anti-social life due to acute negativity.

Raman: "evil gets intensified if lagna is between Ketu & Rahu" whereas "evil is almost neutralized if lagna is between Rahu & Ketu".

    If houses involved are - 1/7, 2/8, 4/10, 5/11, or 6/12 - have a significant KSY effects.

If it is 1/7 axis: inauspicious for marital happiness. As per Raman the Marital life becomes oppressive and marred by frequent classes and want of understanding. " and can be avoided through conscious understanding.

If it is 2/8: The native will go through many ups and downs financially - often great wealth, wiped out, and rebuilt several times.

If it is 4/10: Setbacks in career (If10th-rashi or 10-lord is not strong).

If it is 5/11: Difficulties with children. birth defects or accidental deaths for children.

If it is 6/12: betrayal by colleagues or family members. According to Raman in Three

Hundred Important Combinations, (p. 327) the 6/12 position "could indicate incarceration, or spiritual elevation, depending on the presence or absence of powerful Bandhana Yoga’s.

BV Raman: "Kala Sarpa Yoga has its bright shades. It makes one industrious, hardworking, and aware of one’s own ability- despite mental restlessness. It raises the natives to top positions in their respective fields provided of course other Raja Yoga’s are present.

Rahu-Ketu axis favors rise in mundane life while Ketu-Rahu axis indicates elevation in spiritual matters.

Suffering due to developments in life strengthens the mind and mellows down one’s outlook.

This is a blessing of Kala Sarpa Yoga.

No single yoga, including Kala Sarpa Yoga, is capable of marring or making a horoscope.

No single yoga could ever control an entire chart

KSY is a yoga and not a dosha or curse: Rahu's lord directs the life of the native and Rahu is known for breaking normal set rules in a normal society, so a person with this yoga might go through a period particularly during Rahu-Ketu transits and dasas, causing acute negativity causing frustrations even in mundane events of life, Rahu is know to give a person a fearless attitude to cut loose all those borders of social decency. so basically it is a negative thought process circulating in the mind, native should try to let this negativity move out of his head, in way it is management of psychic energies and sensitivities.

As Rahu enhances the phala of the lord of the house it is posited in.

Venus - All desires for beautiful things enhanced to extreme.

    Mars- Too much focus.

Mercury- Communication- Too much talking for perfection

Moon- Too sensitive, too fickle minded

Sun- Too much concern about self image and leadership.

Jupiter- Obsession in learning or imparting knowledge to others.

Sani- Claim too much credit or try for impossible achievements.

In a way Rahu enhances the planetary lords traits and Ketu subdues them, so during Rahu periods the native is too focused and during Ketu periods native will have foggy focus.

Planets if outside Rahu-Ketu axis: If one of the following planets is outside the axis.

Sun: strong leadership dharma and moral philosophy

Moon: compassion for the masses, upliftment of suffering people.

Mars: gifted social leader, fight injustice upliftment for the downtrodden.

Mercury: calculating mind, detailed planning and upliftment of masses from ignorance.

    Jupiter: extraordinary wisdom, criminal psychologist.

Venus: upliftment through arts and music.

Saturn: Risk taking to averse social injustice but in case no good planets are available, native might resort to injustice himself.

Remedies: Since it has to do with state of mind, take care of it by meditation, spirituality, positive thinking, developing positive habits, and avoiding negative thoughts.

These remedies might look rediculous and very meaningless but the person going through the effects of Kal Sarpa Yoga or Rahu -Ketu effects only knows the pain so no matter how rediculour they sound, it is not that difficult to do most of them, atleast none of them ask to climb mount Everest and wait for Lord Shiva, and regarding the benefits of the said remedies only a native going through the difficult phase would know if they worked or not and sometimes the benefit is so small that it is not visible and sometime it is immense and it is visible like a sun rise, but lot has to do with your mind and how you take things.

All the best, May Lord Shiva save us from difficult times.

  20. Canto 5: The Creative Impetus

Chapter 18: The Prayers Offered to the Lord by the Residents of Jambūdvīpa

    Bhaktivedanta VedaBase: Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 5.18.25

oḿ namo bhagavate mukhyatamāya namaḥ sattvāya prāṇāyaujase sahase balāya mahā-matsyāya nama itiSYNONYMS

om — O my Lord; namaḥ — respectful obeisances; bhagavate — unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead; mukhya-tamāya — the first incarnation to appear; namaḥ — my respectful obeisances; sattvāya — unto the pure transcendence; prāṇāya — the origin of life; ojase — the source of the potency of the senses; sahase — the origin of all mental power; balāya — the origin of bodily strength; mahā-matsyāya — unto the gigantic fish incarnation; namaḥ — respectful obeisances; iti — thus.

    TRANSLATION

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is pure transcendence. He is the origin of all life, bodily strength, mental power and sensory ability. Known as Matsyāvatāra, the gigantic fish incarnation, He appears first among all the incarnations. Again I offer my obeisances unto Him.

    PURPORT

    Śrīla Jayadeva Gosvāmī sings:

    pralayo payodhi-jale dhṛtavān asi vedaḿ

    vihita-vahitra-caritram akhedam

    keśava dhṛta-mīna-śarīra jaya jagad-īśa hare

Soon after the cosmic creation, the entire universe was inundated with water. At that time Lord Kṛṣṇa (Keśava) incarnated as a gigantic fish to protect the Vedas. Therefore Manu addresses Lord Matsya as mukhyatama, the first incarnation to appear. Fish are generally considered a mixture of the modes of ignorance and passion, but we must understand that every incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is completely transcendental. There is never any deterioration of the Supreme Lord's original transcendental quality. Therefore the word sattvāya is used here, meaning pure goodness on the transcendental platform. There are many incarnations of the Supreme Lord: Varāha mūrti (the boar form), Kūrma mūrti (the tortoise form), Hayagrīva mūrti (the form of a horse) and so on. Yet we should never think any of Them material. They are always situated on the platform of śuddha-sattva, pure transcendence.

the best remedy for the KAY is to read about the Matsya Avatar and to

very old message in the archives.

So, may I request you to please provide me the above mantra in

  21. Pvr NarasimhaRaoji and Manik Chand Jain has very correctly mentioned the marked existence of its effects, though some could have tried to scare people through it, or because they they were not able to guage its correct impact!!!

Has not some tried to overrate some good ygas like Guru Mangal, Budhhaditya etc too, possibly because they could not guage its impact?

If we follow books in totality and let our experience be too much affected by books, what he says and she says and they say, act as a roadblock to learning... we have problems in learning.

No other yogas make a chart more visually lopsided like KSY or KAY is what I understand thru experience.

    Just some thoughts.

Name of book by PVR Narasimha rao is :- Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach...

Infact he has always given value to KSY and KAY in his approach..

I must add that i am not a professional and that i work for living being posted in an Insurance MNC, i do not entertain any commercial activity and i usually stay away from predictions. It is when i get a specific query that answer with discretion and i try to recommend the cheaper beads as per the need.
