  1. Dear VK SHRIDHAR ji,

    As Indians we are proud of our tradition and astrology as a fellow member we all are proud to be associated with you in this forum.

    A thread was initiated here in June,2008 in this forum that time of taking oath by the new US president on 20th January, 2009 was inauspicious.The thread is reproduced below.

    It was especially pointed out that retrograde & combust Mercury certainly indicates adverse effects. Now it is evident from the fumble in the oath ceremony itself. He had to take the oath afresh

    Now some western astrologers are debating under various blogs & articles that the second oath may be taken as valid for future forecasting. Does that mean that if a marriage once solemnized in inauspicious time, can be rectified by marrying once again by the same couple at an auspicious time? War once started under an elected time (adverse) , may be stopped & started again under another auspicious time?

    Readers must recall that if there has been a fumble in taking oath, the person has not been able to complete the term.

    Readers may also be well aware that Electional astrology ( Muhurt) is recently added in western system of astrology where as it was available since Vedic era in ffice:smarttags" />India. “Vasist Samhita”, written by Sage Vasist is the first such treatise known to us. In addition, we have lot of aphorisms in Vedas about the Muhurt Vidya.

    The author has also contributed in wikipedia under “Electional Astrology” giving comparison of Vedic & Western systems of electional astrology, in para 4." Hindu vs Western electional astrology” refers. For those interested may please log on to:

    We Indians should be proud of our astrology, especially electional as well as propitiations branches of astrology, and have enormous information for benefit of humanity. It is up to the aspirants to take benefits for attaining the best possible results.

    INAUSPICIOUS TIME OF OATH BY THE NEXT US PRESIDENT

    <FONT]<FONT color="#f00000">– a debate

    The next US President shall take oath on <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com%7Boption%7Dhttp://www.indiadivine.org/audarya/ /><st1:country-region><st1:place><font color=" /><st1:date Year="2009" Day="20" Month="1"><FONT color=black>20th January, 2009</st1:date><FONT color=black> – which is observed as inauspicious time as per Vedic / Indian system of electional (Muhurt) astrology. Discussion herein is based on Indian system (Nirayana - Sidereal system) of astrology.

    <FONT color=black>

    <FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman">The oath is generally taken around mid-day on 20th January when according to Indian system of astrology Aries 21º shall be rising, with Moon in 8th house (6º 15<FONT color=black><FONT face=Tahoma>´<FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman"> - Scorpio, Anuradha asterism); While the Jupiter (9º 33<FONT color=black><FONT face=Tahoma>´<FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman"> – combust), Mercury ( 6º 38 – is combust & retrograde) and Rahu are with the Sun ( 6º 49<FONT color=black><FONT face=Tahoma>´<FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman">) are in the 10th house. Mars lord of ascendant and 8th is in 9th house. There is exchange of 5th lord Sun and 10th lord Saturn. Venus is in 11th house. Exact time of oath taking and the astro details of the oath taker are not known, therefore divisional charts and beneficence of the for the individual are not discussed. However it is essential that the election time is universally auspicious with co-occurrence of Muhurt Yogas and Panchaga Shuddhi; in addition to beneficial time in respect of transits of planets & Dasha, to the individual taking oath.

    <FONT color=black>

    <FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman">The day is Tuesday – considered malefic for taking oath / coronation; and certainly before mid-day.10th Tithi is beneficial being Poorna, but the Moon is waning, and thus weak. Anuradha asterism is held as beneficial for oath ceremony but its Tara Bala (strength) & favourable transit for the individual is to be examined with respect to the person taking oath. <FONT color=red>Vishti Karan (Bhadra) is universally held as the most inauspicious for such ceremonies; and it gets further ferocious with concurrence of Tuesday. Presence of inauspicious Shula Yoga further adds to inauspiciousness. Thus four out the five elements of Hindu Panchanga four are not in favour.

    <FONT color=black>

    <FONT face="Times New Roman"><FONT color=black>There is no beneficial Yoga present on <st1:date Year="2009" Day="20" Month="1"><FONT color=black>20th January, 2009</st1:date><FONT color=black> for auguring the said time as universally auspicious. Combination of 10th Tithi and Tuesday makes “<FONT color=red>Karkacha Yoga” – an adverse Yoga. Concurrence of Tuesday and Anuradha asterism makes “<FONT color=red>Kuyoga” held as malefic. The Moon shall be in 24th asterism from that of the transiting Sun, causing “<FONT color=red>Upgraha Dosha” – adverse for especially for marriage, travel and house related elections. Thus there is no assistance from any special Muhurt Yogas, considered essential for a beneficial election.

    <FONT color=black>

    <FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman">In the election chart, the Moon is in 8th house – held as highly prohibited for initiating any beneficial activity. Thought its debilitation effects in 8th house gets cancelled, but shall have adverse effects on homes / houses, transport system and public in general of the country, with regards to their damage / destruction / losses. Retrograde & combust Mercury may cause severe adverse effects on communication systems, army, Government employees and servants. As per old Western school of thought in astrology, the Mercury being Cazimi, shall have beneficial effects. But Most of the modern followers do not agree with this old thought. Difference in their longitude is 0º 11<FONT color=black><FONT face=Tahoma>´<FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman"> 38<FONT color=black><FONT face=Tahoma>˝<FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman">, but some savior is that their declination is different. Retrograde planet especially Mercury is held by Western astrologers as certainly unfavourable in important elections. Lord of luck (9th house lord) Jupiter is combust and in the same Navamsha with the Sun; being functional malefic for Aries ascendant, may cause instability & disrepute to the ruler. Retrograde Saturn may breed some new unusual and unpleasant steps in diplomacy & governance; some of which shall be withdrawn at latter stages. Income, trade, wealth of the country shall certainly expand and flourish. Thus election chart does not augurs towards beneficence.

    <FONT color=black>

    <FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman">The detailed analysis can only be made after knowing the exact time of taking oath; but the above effects can be mitigated to some extent. From 12 hrs 0 min to 12 hrs 38 min, Abhijin / Abhijit Muhurt prevails, which has immense power to reduce / annihilate adverse effects – as per Vedic astrology. Further Mars as lord of the ascendant in 9th house is another beneficial aspect in the election chart. But in general the said time is not observed as auspicious for taking oath by the head of state of the most powerful country.

    <FONT color=black>

    <FONT color=black><FONT face="Times New Roman"><FONT color=black>The purpose of this article is to trigger a discussion among the Muhurt astrologers (both from east & west) to examine the suitability of the oath time and possibility of recommending another suitable time, after thorough debate, getting benefits Vedic electional astrology which has withstood test of time for the last 5 millenniums. Muhurt (electional) astrology was originated in Vedic era, and is considered as the most useful branch of Hindu astrology. Of late westren astrologers have also started following it. But need of the hour is that remedial advice should be given in advance.

  2.

    GRAHAYUDHA [(Graha = planet) + (Yudha = fight) planetary warfare]. An astronomical phenomenon resulting from proximity between two planets. It affects their power to produce any result. The planets involved in this relationship are rendered unable to bestow their beneficence, and become inauspicious. Such a situation occurs when a planet other than Moon or the nodes (Rahu.or Ketu) is situated within 50 of the Sun. The planet so placed is considered Asthagatha or combust. When such a relationship takes place with Moon, it is known as Saniaagama, or combination. Any of the five nonluminaries within 50 of any other planet causes planetary warfare, or Graha yudiza, and one of the two involved in this relationship is said to be vanquished and the other is a victor. The victorious planet produces powerful auspicious effects, while the vanquished one becomes inauspicious. The house in which this phenomenon occurs is destroyed and the individual suffers throughout his life in respect to that Bhava (q.v.). There are five kinds of planetary warfare, viz., Bhedam, Ullekham, Amsumardhanam, Apasauyam, and Yuddham. Bhedain occurs when two planets are within 50 of each other though in different asterisms. When they are between 30 and 50 of each other located in the same asterism, they are in Ullekha yuddham. When such planets are within a distance of 10 to 30 of each other in the same asterism, the relationship is known as Amsumardlianam. If the planets are within one degree of the other, they are known as in Graha yuddham proper. If one of the two planets within 50 of each other is direct while the other is retrograde, they form Apasavya Yuddham. The effects of planetary warfare depends upon the conditions classified under Poura Graha, Akranta Graha, and Akrita or Yayee Graha. Poura Graha is a planet in a state of opposition to another. Akranta Graha is the overpowered, chased, or eclipsed planet. Akriti Graha is generally aggressive on the move. The Sun is Poura up to 11 a.m., Akranta at noon, and Akrita or feeble in the afternoon. Moon is always overpowered. Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn are always in opposition (Poura), while Mars, Venus, Rahu, and Ketu are always aggressive. The effect of Graha yuddha is conditioned by the mood of these planets as indicated above. A planet with earlier longitude is said to defeat the planet ahead of it. A planet in southern hemisphere is considered defeated. But Venus is always victorious. The planet with a fairly larger orb than the other becomes victorious. (See Brihat Samhita, Chap. XVII).

  3. Dear nisha,

    If the lord of 6,8 and 12th also happens to own 3rd or 11 th house then it becomes all the more malefic. Laal kitaab refers to these houses 6,8 and 12 th as trik bhavs and many a books have been authoured on malefic effects of these houses. I personally feel 6,8 and 12 to be more malefic in effect and design.

    Regards

    j.s.sandhu

    Dear experts,

    There seem to be different views on the malefic lordships. According to BPHS, the lords of trishadyas, ie 3,6, and 11 houses are the most malefic in a chart, while 8th and 12th lords are neutral. But we see in several discussions that lords of 6,8th and 12th are the most malefic.

    As per my understanding, planets occupying 6th , 8th and 12th cause the most harm but as far as lordship is concerned, 3rd,6th and 11th lords are the most malefic, is my understanding correct? Could the experts kindly throw some light?

    Thanks & Regards,

    Nisha

  4. 13-25. Combinations for Father’s Death. The father of the native would have passed away prior to the native’s birth, if Surya is in Ari, Randhr, or Vyaya Bhava, as Randhr’s Lord is in Dharm Bhava, Vyaya’s Lord is in Tanu Bhava and Ari’s Lord is in Putr Bhava. Should Surya be in Randhr Bhava, while Randhr’s Lord is in Dharm, the native’s father will pass away within a year of his birth. If the Lord of Vyaya Bhava is in Dharm Bhava, while Dharm’s Lord is in its debilitation Navans, the native’s father will face his end during the 3rd, or the 16th year of the native. Death of father will occur in the 2nd, or the 12th year, if Lagn’s Lord is in Randhr Bhava, as Randhr’s Lord is with Surya. Should Rahu be in the 8th from Dharm, as Surya is in the 9th from Dharm, death of father will take place in the 16th, or the 18th year of the native. If Sani is in the 9th from Candr, as Surya is with Rahu, the native’s father will die in the 7th, or the 19th year of the native. The native in his 44th year will lose his father, if Dharm’s Lord is in Vyaya, as Vyaya’s Lord is in Dharm. If Lagn’s Lord is in Randhr Bhava, as Candr is in Surya’s Navans, the native in his 35th, or 41st year will lose his father. One will lose his father in the 50th year, if Surya, being the Lord of Dharm, is conjunct Man¯gal and Sani. If Surya is in the 7th from Dharm Bhava, as Rahu is in the 7th from Sahaj Bhava, the 6th, or 25th year of the native will be fatal for father. If Sani is in the 7th from Randhr Bhava, as Surya is in the 7th from Sani, the ages of 21, 26, or 30 will be fatal for the father. If Dharm’s Lord is in its debilitation Rasi, while his dispositor is in Dharm Bhava, the native will lose his father at the age of 26, or 30. Thus the Jyotishis may know the effects.

  14. Easy Jyotish Remedial Measure ( Remedies )

    Here are some easy ways of Vedic Astrology remedial measure. Some of the remedies I read in sites, classical texts etc. Some remedies I also got from my own experience. These measures are only my personal opinion - might strange pretty strange though. But I believe that people might be benefited from them, so I put them here. It is just a very humble attempt of me to help people.

    You will find that sometimes I have suggested to avoid using materials pertaining to the planet(s) related. Do not take them always literal, that is not needed. But, try to link your activities and what sort of materials and other goods you use, when you run a particular Dasha period. You will surprisingly note that most of the times these items relate to the planet this way or that way, either for their natural significations or for their lordships. So, if you have a very bad Sun period in the past, try to remember if you have used any Sun sort of goods in that period or did any Sun sort of negative activities, such as being too authoritative on people. And then, avoiding such stuff again will be a powerful remedial measure for you!

    About donations and charitable works - Donation and charity are sacrifices and that is why great positive karmas. This is believed that it also pacifies a harmful planet when that planet type of things are donated. Some also say that you might donate money to a poor for buying foods and medicine, but if he uses the money for bad purposes such as buying addictive drugs, then it is rather put upon your shoulder. Helping the old, poor, needy, distressed is a very good way - there can be no doubt that it leads to freedom from bad karma much or less. Donate foods, medicines, money and other materials to the poor. If you do not have money or any material to donate, then at least, say good and nice things, make the person feel better at least! It will surely not be overlooked by the God Almighty.

    In this page of Jyotish Remedial Measure you will find –

    Note -

    01. When a planet is malefic for you according to Jyotish, never strengthen that in any ways, and propitiate (Pacify) it.

    02. Strengthen your benefic planets in every ways suggested by Jyotish.

    Many of the suggested mantras and stotrams are available in this site with audio. So if you need a specific mantra or stotram, please check out the mantra page.

    The remedies mentioned are general and it is your own responsibility to perform these remedial measures. I do not suggest performing a remedy without checking the horoscope well so I am not responsible for any damage or loss you might face performing them. Please do take them at your own responsibility.

  16. XVII).

  18. The late J. N. Bhasin proposes what he calls a revolutionary new rule saying that a planet displays the effects of planets that reside in its signs. For example, ketu in Sagitarius and Mars in Pisces, Jupiter will effect cruel nature of Mars and Ketu through its aspects.

    This rule opens new dimensions of interpretation and Bhasin used it to explain charts that otherwise would have been hard to reconcile with the known facts.

    Would be very interesting to hear your experiences and opinion.

    Parents of GROOM 2(Dob:08-11-1974) seems to have expressed matching of horoscopes but I have my own doubt on the harmony of marital life due to the combust Venus(Lord of lagna) with debilitated Sun in the Lagna (Tula in this case) itself though aspected by Jupiter(Lord of 3rd & 6th) and the Mars dosha also seems more though there is dosha samyam.

  22. Dear all,

    I will be posting a separate thread on naming soon . Till then here is some information that will suffice.This is an article by surjit poddar of SJC.

    The principal of naming

    INTRODUCTION

    Name is the result of the first tangible result which the eternal soul attains with human birth in the world of Maya. This gives us the identity and individuality. Whenever anyone calls with that name, it fills up his mind with some very unique perceptions regarding our selves. The perceptions are very subjective and very unique and the persons near us interact with us in a very specific way. This is a common occurrence that, a person might have more than one name in the home, among friends and in his work circle. This is seen that the way the people or the world behaves considerably change with the name.

    Now we wouldn’t have bothered much if the name would only defined our unique images in the mind of the person, interacting with us, however, it is not limited to that. The results we accrue in the society is the results of all those numerous interactions which we have within it. Thus it is very important to know our own name is in store for us. This knowledge shall also empower us to change our name if necessary, to make the vibrations of the name positive in our life. We can keep the name of a new born not on an arbitrary basis but on well grounded principle of Jyotish, so that their life can be fruitful and prosperous.

    Even if you don’t believe in this, which seems superstitious, why not give a honest try and see whether or not it works. There is nothing you lose.

    AKSHARAS AND NAKSHATRAS

    The entire gamut of Aksharas is divided into the 28 Nakshatras or asterisms. Each Nakshatra is of four padas, each pada is assigned to an akshara. The duration of each pada is 3d 20m, however this is a bit different in the case of Uttarashadha and Sravana. The duration of Uttarashadha is divided into four parts and the first three padas are assigned to Uttarashadha, which makes the duration of Uttarashadha to be 10deg with each pada to be 2d 30m. The remaining one pada of Uttarashadha is assigned to Abhijit, the intercalary nakshatra. Similarly beginning 1/15th part of Sravana is given to Abhijit, making its total length to be 253.33 min, i.e., 4d 13m 20s. The remaining 14/15th part of Sravana is assigned to the four padas of Sravana, making the total duration of Sravana to be 12d 26m 40s.

  23. Dear all.

    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="93%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%">Q. Do remedies work?

    Sure. Remedial Measure is a very important part of Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) and like other principles of Jyotish, it always work. Ever since I have been starting doing different remedies, it has been my constant experience that they work. Not only do they work but they do work in a systematic way.

    Q. What do you mean by 'A systematic way'?

    Systematic way means that the remedies would work as suggested by the horoscope itself. As an example, if Sun is found in your second house being the lord of the fifth house, doing a remedy to Sun would cause changes in your life regarding your finance, children, diet, creativity and other areas of life ruled by houses second and fifth. It will not affect any other fields of life that Sun is not connected with, in your chart.

    Q. How do remedies work?

    It is impossible to explain in a worldly way. It is a divinity. According to Jyotish teaching, the negative karma you have is for the immoral deeds you performed in your past births. Remedial measure means seeking the divine grace either with prayers and worshipping such as chanting mantras, wearing yantras etc., or with doing good deeds such as serving others, donating to the poor etc. Fasting is also a good remedy which works in the way of penance or self-discipline. Remedies pay off the negative karma through the good deeds instead of making you suffer as the result, and so balance the karmic energies.

    Q. How would I know what is the best sort of remedy for me?

    It mostly depends upon you. Does not matter what remedies are suggested, it has to be considered if you are able to perform it or not. Because all the remedies take some physical or financial efforts to perform. Such as, chanting mantras would not need any financial means but only physical and mental works, whereas donating to a yajna would not need much physical effort but a lot of financial pay off. That is why, first it has to be focused upon what is convenient for you.

    Q. What are considered to be strong remedies?

    Depends. Generally, mantras and yajnas are considered to be the strongest. Gemstones and fasting do not work much strong for a few. Yantras are also good remedies.

    Q. Why you say gemstones do not work strong for all?

    It depends on the chart itself and varies from person to person. There are certain stuff to be looked at in the chart to verify this. Some people are strongly and quickly affected by remedies and some need much effort and time to see the changes. As an example, I personally am very much sensitive about any remedies.

    Q. How would I know how would remedies work for me?

    The best way surely is to get your chart checked by a good Vedic Astrology. Another way is to try different remedies, which is often risky or difficult for most, otherwise you know this Sastra well.

    Q. Someone told me that it is not going to work unless I have very strong faith. What would you say?

    Opinions vary. But this is not correct. Theoretically, and even practically, remedies would work for anyone and everyone. It does not depend on faith. Like Jyotish, remedial measure is also the laws of nature and you can not ignore them if you just do not trust them. Everyone is under this divine law. Anyone doing a correct remedy in a correct way would get the benefit and anyone messing with this divine law even without knowing would be troubled. I can give innumerable examples of it. However to get a remedial measure work positively you will have to do it with respect.

    Q. If remedies work, why people are not ever happy?

    Good question. The fact is that, remedy is not just a human effort, but it is a divine grace for the person who enjoys it's blessings. There always is certain direct or indirect indication in the horoscope itself for divine grace and the person performs this in the very period of a benefic planet declaring this, such as Jupiter, ninth lord, fifth lord, or other benefics strongly connected to them. It is the teaching of Jyotish and has been my personal experience from my life as well as others' lives. You can never succeed in getting appropriate remedy unless you are destined to do so. Planets are incomparably mightier than us and see and know whatever we think and do, and it is never possible for you to do something that they do not allow. Think, these days only very few people believe in astrology and very few of them come to know about Vedic Astrology seriously. Among them, again only few are interested in remedial measure seriously and among them only few are blessed with the opportunity to meet a good Vedic Astrologer and get good remedies. How many people around you believe in astrology (Vedic Astrology) and how many of them tried remedies seriously? I have sometimes tried very hard to make people believe in Jyotish, remedies etc., but in spite of hours of explanations and discussions with a lot of practical examples, I failed most of the times to make them believe or realize. That is why I have learnt that this is the decision of God whom he will grant vision and blessings.

    Q. Does that mean it is preplanned by destiny who will do remedies successfully and who will not?

    Yes, sure. Actually all the actions we perform throughout our lives are preplanned and controlled. We really do not do anything but the divinity makes us do all the things. It is very hard to believe, but a person blessed with consciousness see it always very clearly. We all perform preplanned actions that is why predictions about our lives come true. Whatever happens in your life must be caused by the actions that you and people around you perform willingly and unwillingly, and to make the event happen in a planned way all must work in a planned way, too.

    Q. What is the point of trying to do remedies then? It would happen anyway, not so?

    Yes, but it is very very difficult to yield it confidently, for it is always very hard to predict something with 100% confidence and guarantee. Divinity exposes itself to us only to that extent it wants. We can not see what the God does not wish to show us. For human limitation in predicting, a part of prediction is always uncertain and that is why there is a room for effort. We can not tell for sure before we try, and though we try or not, at end we always see that it happened as per the horoscope, which is very hard to tell before happening, most of the times.

    Q. Should I chant mantras to a planet or wear a stone to propitiate it?

    Most of the times, no. To understand remedies you will have to understand how planets work. Planets become either benefic or malefic towards you for your horoscope, a benefic means that generally is auspicious and blesses you with happiness and good stuff, while a malefic means that tries to cause harms and damages. Benefic planets should be strengthened with mantras, gemstones, colours etc., whereas malefic planets should be propitiated with charity, donation, fasting etc. There are mantas to propitiate planets, too. It is not possible to be covered here within short. You will have to understand with many charts in practice. There are also benefic planets and malefic planets as per nature, which is another scheme. So, this is all complex. Most of the Jyotishas (Vedic Astrologers) practicing today do not have a good knowledge on this. You should consult a truly skilled Vedic Astrologer to know and perform the right remedy for you, and the astrologer also must be very honest to guide you to the most effective remedy for you, rather than making money for his own, by selling gemstones or yantras grossly.

    Q. I do not have the money to buy gemstones or to donate in a yajna. So mantras seem to be the easiest for me, right?

    The answer can not be easily given. Mantras have great power in them that sometimes work in an unbelievably strong way. That is why it is never good to chant a mantra unless you are sure about what it is going to do to you. Because not all mantra is suitable for all. Which mantra would be suitable for you would be found by reading your horoscope. It is a matter of a careful judgment of the mantra considering the syllables, the starting letter, the sequence of letters etc. Only after judging all these, the mantra should be suggested. Or the mantra can be 'rectified' as per your horoscope. The topic is very vast and beyond the scope of this page. So please get your horoscope checked by a knowledgeable Vedic Astrologer for this. Also there are a strict procedure to be followed to chant the mantra. Please note that chanting an inappropriate mantra, or chanting a mantra in a wrong way can lead to very difficult and complicated situations. So this is all very relative.

    To understand the core facts about remedies and astrology, please read my essay Necessity of astroilogy. It is very long, but once you read it all, I hope that you would understand that it was a good use of your time and energy to read this.
