What bothers me most is, sometimes I think the most impure thoughts while chanting, which make me angry, and I feel like giving up & just walking away, but I never do, I feel Lord Krishna must be really angry with me for chanting His name and at the same time, having these impure thoughts, it doesnt happen all the time, but when it does it really pea's me off, what's to be done about it? ps im getting to the point where i want to decrease my round to 4 instead of 16, i know it sounds stupid but /images/graemlins/confused.gif Im sure a lot of people have this problem and not just me. 18. Initiation Lecture, San Fransisco, March 10, 1968 Prabhupada: The meaning of this mantra is apavitrah pavitro va. Apavitrah means unclean and pavitra means clean. So anyone who may be unclean or clean, it doesnt matter. Apavitrah pavitro va sarvavastham gato pi va. Sarva means all. Avastha means condition. In whatever condition one may be, either unclean or clean, yah, anyone who, smaret, remembers,pundarikaksam... Pundarikaksam means Krishna. Krishnas another name is pundarikaksam. Yah smaret pundarikaksam, sa: That person, bahya, externally, abhyantaram, internally, sucih, becomes at once purified. Sri-visnu sri-visnu sri-visnu. Pundarikaksam, Krishna or Visnu. So this is the remembrance. Sri-Visnu, namah sri-visnu sri-visnu. So this initiation means purification. In this material world we are all impure. Because we are impure, therefore death, disease, old age, and pangs of birth overcome us. Just like in diseased condition, we have experienced, there are so many painful conditions, similarly, in this materialistic way of life these symptoms, birth, death, disease, and old age, they are different kinds of miseries. The rascals, materialists, they are thinking that they’re making advance, but they have no solution for these things. The solution is by tapasya. Tapasya means voluntarily accepting some rules and regulations to purify him. That is called tapasya. Just like in diseased condition, one has to voluntarily accept the rules and regulations enforced by the physician: You should not eat this. You should not do this. You should not go out. You should take rest. You should not, should not, should not, so many. Similarly, if we want to purify ourselves, then four principles of purificatory process, namely illicit sex life and intoxication, meat-eating, and gambling, these four things must be... These four things are paraphernalia of your civilization. In the western... Not only western, eastern, everywhere. The Kali-yuga is spreading very rapidly, and wherever the Kali-yuga is very prominent, these four items are very prominent: unrestricted sex life, gambling, and meat-eating, and intoxication. When people become practiced to all this nonsense, they think, Oh, what is wrong there? But it is the most abominable part of human civilization. Anyone who are indulging in these four things, they cannot imagine where is he and how he will be free from this conditional life. So this is the purificatory process. So as you are being initiated, initiation means beginning of your purificatory process. So if we are serious about purification, then we must follow these four principles, if you want to be cured. Of course, this chanting of hari-nama will make you purified. Thats nice. But just like this fire I am going to ignite. This is dry firewood. But if I help it, to keep it dry, then the fire will be very nice, blazing fire. But if I pour water on it, then it will be difficult to ignite. Similarly, the fire of Krishna consciousness will keep you always progressing, but at the same time, if we also voluntarily do not pour water on that fire, then it will be nice. Similarly, Krishna consciousness or chanting Hare Krishna will keep you progressive. At the same time, voluntarily, if you do not commit all these nonsenses, then it will be very nice. And if you continue this water pouring, then... Just like a man is taking medicine at the same time doing all nonsense. Then his disease will not be cured, or may take very, very long time. So we should not be irresponsible in that way because life is very short. We do not know when death is coming, especially in these days. We are moving in the street, we are moving by plane, we are moving... Every step, there is danger. Padam padam yad vipadam. It is a place of danger. So our life... We should consider this human form of life, especially Krishna conscious life, is very important life. We should not be inattentive. So we should be very careful. Krishna will, of course, protect you, but at the same time, we have got consciousness. We should also take care that before the next death comes, we must be fully prepared for being transferred to Krsnaloka. And it is very simple thing. If you keep yourself constantly in Krishna consciousness, thats the only thing. Then you are sure to be going, transferred next life. As I was explaining last night, simply by understanding Krishna... Krishna is not like us. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How He is Supreme Personality of Godhead? That He proved when, while He was present. The history is there. Krishnas pastimes, Krishnas activities, Krishnas wisdom, lecture, Bhagavad-gita, everything is there. They are the proofs. There is a very nice verse by Yamunacarya that there are authentic literatures, there are authentic personalities, and they accept Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Authentic literatures, they give proof that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And by His wonderful activities we can understand that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But still, the atheistic rascal will not accept. You see? There are sufficient proofs. Just like Arjuna says, Krishna, You are the param brahma. It is not because I am Your friend I am flattering You. You have been accepted by authorities like Vyasadeva, Narada, in all scriptures, and You are personally explaining Yourself. So there is no doubt about it, but the demons, in spite of all this dogs obstinacy, they will not accept. So let them go to hell. So far we are concerned, Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His body is eternal, full of bliss, and full of knowledge, end sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah [bs. 5.1]. If we simply remember that Krishna is like that, and as soon as we chant Hare Krishna, we remember Krishna, and we understand that He is the Supreme Personality. This very consciousness will lead you. It is not very difficult. It is very easy, always thinking of Krishna. And those who have taken already, they are thinking of Krishna, and they are making progress both, I mean to say... Their health is improving; their mind is becoming very nice. So you will be also feeling. There is no need of talking. You will yourself feel, but you must follow. And there are ten kinds of offenses. That also, you should avoid. And these rules and regulations. Now chant mantras. (end)
19. Hare Krishna Could somebody tell me what mantra Swaminarayan devotees chant, knowing the Krishna devotess chant Hare Krishna
20. Once Ramanujacarya, after the death of Yamunacarya, was pensive with some questions.... He requested Kancipurna, the servant of Lord Varadaraja (Krsna), to ask the Lord some questions on his behalf. One of the questions was, "What happens if a devotee dies suddenly and is unable to think of You at the time of death?" Lord Varadaraja (Krsna) replied, "Then I will think of my devotee."
21. VOLUME FOUR Diary of a Traveling Preacher, volume 4 - Chapter 15 She immediately grabbed my arm and pleaded, "No, please don't move. We want to talk to you." New York to London, 5th May - 20th May 2002 On the evening of May 5, I boarded a Virgin Atlantic Airlines flight from New York to London on the first leg of my journey to Poland to join this year's Festival of India tour. As I entered the cabin I scanned the rows of seats from front to back, hoping there might be a row free so I could lay down and get some much-needed rest. It would literally be the first opportunity I'd had in two months to sleep a full six hours - the duration of the flight. I often use flights to catch up on email, arrange my study notes or sort out telephone numbers and business cards people have given me, little things I don't have time to do because of my intense schedule as a traveling preacher. But this time I desperately needed to sleep. However, as I walked through the cabin it soon became apparent that the flight was full and no extra seats would be available. As I settled into an aisle seat, an air hostess came up and asked if everything was alright. Thinking she was simply doing her duty, I quickly said, "Yes, thank you," but I then noticed she wasn't going away. She smiled and said, "Can I ask you a question?" "Yes, of course," I replied. She said, "My husband and I recently went with a tour group to India, visiting New Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. Something happened to me on that trip. It's hard to explain. I was so touched by the experiences we had, especially when we visited the temples. I have a lot of questions about spiritual things. Can you answer them for me?" It seemed she was so intent that she was prepared to forget everything else for the moment, including her duties on the flight, so I had to say, "We can talk, but maybe right now is not the best time. Perhaps later on in the flight." She looked around, and collecting herself said, "Yes, you're right." She then added, "Is there anything you require during the flight - a special meal or something?" I said, "Actually, there is something you can do for me. Let me know if there is a row of seats free so I can take some extra rest. I'm really tired!" "Sure," she said, as she turned to show the other passengers to their seats, "I'll do my best." A few minutes later two ladies came up the aisle, and their eyes lit up when they saw they had the two seats next to me - a window seat and a middle seat. As they sat down they smiled, and at the first opportunity one of them introduced herself. "My name is Peggy. From the way you're dressed it appears that you practice yoga." "Yes," I said. "I practice a form of yoga called bhakti-yoga - the yoga of love and devotion." Peggy said, "My friend, Martha, and I recently became interested in yoga, but we realize there's more to it that than just exercises. Can you answer some questions for us?" I thought to myself, "O my gosh! What about my rest!" Before I had time to reply, the air hostess reappeared and said, "Sir, I've arranged a row of seats just for you at the back. Come quickly, the flight is about to take off." When Peggy heard her, she immediately grabbed my arm and pleaded, "No, please don't move. We want to talk to you. We have some very important questions!" Then the air hostess said, "Actually, it would nice if you stayed here because this is the section of the plane where I do my service. Later on in the flight all of us can discuss together." In my mind I envisioned the row of seats and the sound sleep awaiting me. It was 10pm and I was ready to call it quits. I couldn't believe what was happening. But as I looked at the three of them, eager to learn about spiritual life, I decided I couldn't let them down, and said, "OK, I'll stay here." With that Peggy and Martha immediately launched into a series of questions about the soul, God and the spiritual world. They were so absorbed that they refused the drinks and meals served later on by our air hostess, who took every opportunity to listen in whenever she walked by. After two hours most people on the flight had fallen asleep, and taking advantage of the break in her routine the air hostess came by and joined our little sat-sanga in the sky. In fact, she brought the discussion to an even higher level when she asked about the best method for realizing God according to the scriptures of India. As I began explaining the glories of chanting Hare Krsna all three women listened attentively. Halfway through the flight I could hardly keep my eyes open, and neither could the inquisitive souls huddled around me. As we sped through the air at 800km an hour, Peggy and Martha would nod off to sleep for a few moments, and I would think, "Now is my chance to sleep," when all of a sudden one of them would wake up with another question: "What about reincarnation?; If God is all loving - why is there evil in the world?; You said God is a person. Can you describe Him?" So it went on for more than five hours! I was left with only the last half-hour of the flight, because the ladies had to use the rest-room. During that time, I took my beads and chanted Hare Krsna. My condition could only be described as blissful exhaustion. Just before we got off the plane, Martha turned to me and said, "I've never enjoyed a flight as much as this. We learned so many new and wonderful things! I especially enjoyed your description of God and that place called Vrinda something - what is it called?" "Vrindavan," I said. "Yes, Vrindavan," she repeated. She then asked, "Will you have time to keep in touch with us on email?" "Yes, of course," I said, as I wrote down my email address for her. "I'll make time. It's the duty of a traveling preacher." madhavya madhuranga kanana . praptadhirajya sriya vrndaranya vikasi saurabha tate tapiccha kalpa druma nottapam jagad eva yasya bhajate kirti cchata cchayaya citra tasya tavanghri sannidhi jusam kim va phalaptir nrnam "O handsome, fragrant tamala desire tree [Krishna] blooming in Vrindavan forest and embraced by the madhavi vine of the goddess ruling this forest. 23. VOLUME FOUR Diary of a Traveling Preacher, Volume 4 - Chapter10 "I was thankful for their association" Durban, South Africa, February 12th to March 7th 2002 After nearly two months spent resting and recuperating in Durban, South Africa, I realized the time was at hand for me to continue traveling and... preaching. I have arranged to do a two-month preaching tour of America, and to that end I had made a reservation on a flight from Johannesburg to... Atlanta, Georgia, on March 2. Of the many things I had to concern myself with before leaving the country, I was most interested to pick up a small piece of jewelry I was having made for my Deities. Two days before my flight, I tried to telephone Cookie, the sister of my aspiring disciple, Suren Vallabjee. For many years the Vallabjee Family has owned a jewelry store in the Durban suburb of Tongat, and Cookie had been instrumental in ensuring the piece I ordered would be ready in time. After repeatedly getting a busy signal, I decided I would drive to the shop to see how the work was progressing. As I got into the car I told the driver to head north to Tongat, calculating that we would arrive at the shop about 11:00am. As we were driving out of the temple driveway, I received a call from Classic Eyes, an optometrist at which I had placed an order for a new pair of glasses. I was surprised to learn that the glasses, including a prescription lens imported from London, were ready for collection. "That's odd," I thought, "those glasses aren't supposed to be ready until the day after tomorrow, the day I'm leaving." Deciding that we would pick up the glasses first, I told the driver to change direction and make for the optometrists in the south of Durban. He replied, "But Maharaja, it makes more sense to go to Tongat first. If we do that we'll miss the traffic." I hesitated, then said, "Let's pick up the glasses first. That way, if there's something wrong with them there may still be time to have it corrected." We arrived at Classic Eyes at 11am and spent the next fifteen minutes determining that the glasses were suitable and paying the bill. As we left the shop ready for the drive back through Durban to Tongat, my cell phone rang. The news I received sent a chill up my spine: "Maharaja, this is Sukamari dasi. A terrible thing has happened. There was an armed robbery at the Vallabjee's jewelry shop fifteen minutes ago. Ten African men armed with AK-47s burst in and made everyone lie on the floor. When Suren's 28-year-old nephew, Vishal, stumbled into the scene, one of the gunmen shot him dead. They stole all the cash in the safe and many items of jewelry. The family is in shock." I said, "Phone them and say I'll be there in one hour." It was only when we were racing to Tongat that I realized I had originally planned to be in the shop at 11am, the exact moment the hold up took place. Vishal's funeral was held on the morning of my flight to America. He was a pious man who left behind a wife and two children. More than 5000 people attended, and I was asked to speak. I emphasized the temporary nature of material life and how we must all be prepared to die. Death often comes unexpectedly - and is never welcome. We must prepare ourselves by always remaining Krsna conscious. I spoke from the heart, because I feel close to the family. I also spoke with a sense of urgency born of knowing that, had it not been for Krsna's mercy, it could easily have been myself who was being mourned. At the funeral I experienced a deepening conviction to take full advantage of all opportunities to become Krsna conscious before my own departure. "Friend, when you will die? Do you know? Do not even infants sometimes die unexpectedly? With clear intelligence, without attachment to the body and senses, and without stopping to think, run to Vrndavana." [Vrindavan-mahimamrta, Chapter 1, Text 78] Two hours later I was on my way to Johannesburg to make my international connection. When I had checked in for my flight and cleared Customs and Immigration, I relaxed in the departure lounge. It was a large area, with hundreds of passengers awaiting their flights. As I sat there, I suddenly.. felt a sharp pain on my right cheek. It stunned me, and when I looked around I saw a group of three rough young men about 20m away. They were all laughing. The next moment one of them put what looked like a small metallic ball into his mouth. He then placed a metal straw to his lips and blew the object towards me. It came fast, and before I could react it hit me in the temple. I immediately got up, and when I did the young men motioned for me to come forward. Instead I stepped back, picked up my bags and moved to another part of the lounge. They followed me, unnoticed by the other passengers, and the young man blew another projectile at me. This time it missed. Not wanting to be detected, the young men pretended as nothing had happened. No one else in the lounge was aware of what was going on, and I was unsure what to do. I wished I had another devotee with me. Since Sri Prahlad and his wife stopped traveling with me and moved to Mayapur in September I have been traveling alone, and this wasn't the first time I'd found myself in an awkward situation. Suddenly two policemen appeared nearby, so I picked up my bags and walked.. quickly towards them. As I approached them I looked over my shoulder at the young men, but they had disappeared. When the policemen asked me what I wanted, I told them that a group of young men had been harassing me. The officers said they would keep a look out for them. As we were talking my flight was called, and I excused myself to board the plane. As a result of the incident I was one of the last to board, and when I entered the cabin I saw that the section was full except for my seat. As I.. headed for my place and put my bags in the overhead compartment, I noticed that all eyes were upon me. At first I thought it must have been my cloth (which I had dyed a bright saffron the day before), but it was unusual that every single person in that section of the plane was studying me. When I had sat down I took the opportunity to look around, and I noticed that everyone in my section was in their 60s or 70s. I sensed they were part of an organization. After we took off and people started speaking freely, I realized that they were all Americans. I thought, "Oh no, there's going to be a real party spirit as we cross the Atlantic. I probably won't get a moment's rest!" Traveling on long international flights is difficult enough, associating with so many materialistic people as they drink alcohol and eat bhoga while movies depicting various kinds of sinful activities absorb their consciousness. It had already been a tough day, and I didn't look forward to being in the middle of a group of Americans celebrating the last day of their vacation. I was longing for the association of devotees with whom I could read and chant peacefully. Soon the hostesses came around with drinks. As I watched, I was surprised that no one in my section wanted anything alcoholic. One after another they ordered fruit juices. I thought, "I've never seen this before!" I also ordered a fruit juice, and as I did the gentleman next to me smiled. When the hostesses served the meals half an hour later, all the passengers in my section took the food but didn't begin eating. When everyone had the food in front of them, one of the men stood up and said, "Now we will all say grace together." With that, everyone said a prayer thanking God for the food and then began to eat. By now I realized I was in the midst of a group of devout Christians, and taking advantage of the beneficial association I unpacked my prasadam, said a quick prayer, and began to eat along with everyone else. They may not have had shaved heads, but I was certainly happy to be in their company. After we had eaten the cabin crew began showing a movie. Suddenly, everyone in my section took out Bibles and began reading to themselves. Taking my cue, I took out my pocket Bhagavad-gita and, with a smile on my face, began reading as well. My wish for hearing and chanting was coming true! I eventually turned to the man next to me and asked with which Christian denomination they were affiliated. I didn't catch the name of the group, but he said they were fifty members of the "faith" returning from missionary work in Africa. When I said I was thankful for their association, he smiled and asked if I was a Buddhist. I replied that I was a Hare Krsna devotee and that I was also engaged in global missionary work. We spoke briefly about the need for God consciousness in the world, and then drifted off to sleep. Sastra states that there are two kinds of men: divine and demoniac. dvau bhuta sargau loke smin daiva asura eva ca visnu bhaktah smrto daiva asuras tad viparayayah "There are two classes of men in this created world. One consists of the demoniac and the other the godly. The devotees of Lord Visnu are the godly whereas those who are just the opposite are called demons." [Padma Purana] After a brush with the demoniac and hankering for the association of the pious, I was thankful that Krsna placed me in that situation for the 20-hour flight to Atlanta. It seemed an auspicious omen before my tour of America that I pray will give rise to more good association and opportunities to preach the glories of the Lord! http://www.traveling-preacher.com /images/graemlins/smile.gif
