CCji: no one knows Sanskrt; everyone knows Sanskrt.

It's a gradual process, step by step.

Just a question of trying, leaning forward ever so slightly.

I may know more than someone, Jagatji knows more than I do, someone else knows more than he does.

Differences don't inhibit any one individual's progress.

That's KRSNa/MAyA's test to see whether we're looking inside or outside.

You can learn Sanksrit via the books of the Goswamis. There is one samhita bye J. Goswami that teaches Sanksrit through Hari-nama.

On VNN.org, I believe the user Jagat stated that he created a learning package based on this.

If this is true, maybe he can share his thoughts on that.

Hindi did not exist 5,000 years ago, and certainly had nothing to do with Krishna. Brij bhash today has been influenced by many other languages, as have all Indian languages.

This seems a rather harsh dismissal. It's possible to arbitrate a "pure" Braja-bhasha if one takes the medieval poetry for which that language is best known as one's ideal. It's also true that some of the most notable medieval Gaudiya Vaishnavas (including those from distant Tamil Nadu) chose to adopt Braj as their vehicle of devotional expression. Most employed Braja-buli instead, but one could just as easily dismiss that, as it's also a new Indo-Aryan language. The six gosvamis and others wrote in Sanskrit, and it's a good question, to ask why they almost exclusively did so even though everyone around them was writing in Braj. Anyone have any theories about this? Thanks,

Dear Makhanmisri, I did not see that original quote by jndas in this thread. Could you tell me which thread it came from. It may not matter, but i wanted to see in what context the idea was presented.

Sorry, it's from a long time ago (6/17/01). Observing that cponversational Sanskrit is rather rare and difficult, Talasiga asked why one wouldn't just learn Radha and Krsna's language.

Namaste!

Sanskrit: A complete course for beginners by Michael Coulson is one of the books I am using as well. I have the revised edition [revised by Gombrich and Benson].

I have spotted errors in the revised parts! You can tell which parts are revised by the font, so every time I bump into one of these sections, I get a little skeptical. *sigh* So I go to several other sources and compare notes.

Examples: page 28 under Class I where they attempt to spell "shuc" they end up spelling "shrucri"... page 29 where they attempt "likh" they forget the viraama...

It is really a shame because it seems like Coulson did a great job on his own. I really wish I could find someone to teach me in person, one on one. /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

Anyway, I am glad I found this forum. I have learned much from you guys already!

I agree that learning one on one is best. I was studying for a while with a south Indian brahmin, but he eventually had to move on (he was a computer programmer) to another city/project. I'm sure there must be university courses you an take part time. I just find that I don't learn that well just by reading a book. Especially for something like language. In the past I've studied Russian and French. But now I realize I should have studied something like Latin. Atleast this way you know something unique if not particularly useful (since I don't use french or russian, usefulness isn't very important).

Hehe... I took Latin! It is very useful. Did you know that English is 60% Latin, particularly vocabulary? But it is still considered a Germanic language primarily because of sentence structure and grammar. And it is used so much in science, medicine and law... Latin, though called a "dead language" is very much alive and well /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

I met Charu Bhave two weeks ago at McGill. A charming lady who has become something of a Sanskrit missionary. They have developed Sanskrit language teaching materials that resemble most spoken second language courses. The goal is speaking Sanskrit, but of course, that leads to the ability to read, etc.

It's a good way for someone who wants to learn in a more natural way, rather than the dead classical language style that is usually used.
