ok all you yanks out there

that time of yer where the whole nation goes ga-ga over the remains of a

slughtered bird..where families gather to argue over processed cranberries and

remind themselves why they don't talk to uncle carl....

anyways...just wondering

wot do ya'll do this time of year?

family?

wot sorta meal if any do you prepare

how vegan friendly are yer surroundings...

from past years, this time of year seems to be dealt with extreme dread by most

vegans

has anything changed fer anyone? do you have a good time? have you gotten yer

points out to others? er is just hittin yer head against the wall, er just

hiding and lookin at the abked potato on yer plate?

On the family end the last few years we have been having

Thanksgiving at home with my Dad and sometimes DH's Mom due to not

talking to alot of family members.

This year my Dad will come over and all but me will have a usual

Thanksgiving with a turkey and stuffing, but almost all else is made

vegan. Not sure what I will make for myself yet. Thankfully DH

handles the carnivores meals.

On my side we'll probably have a nice stir-fry, mashed potatoes,

grilled veggies of some sort, asparagus, corn, pumpkin pie (have a

to find a good vegan recipe, hint hint), fresh baked bread, and who

knows what else.

We'll plan it a couple days in advance and get a grocery list going.

Maybe play some cards after. Nothing too fancy, just a relaxing

family get-to-gether for us.

but my comment was based on the fact of a million stories i've heard..where

every thanxfernuthin some poor vegan sits at the family dinner table..and stares

at the baked potato, as its the only thing they can eat...

I think that if a person is continously grateful..

everyday thankful and humble and appreciative..

that becomes(hopefully) part of their personality

and needn't take one day of the year to express that.

That is what I aim.. to never take anything for granted.

Thanksfornothing is a farce, I see a lot of hipocrosy

and you needent kill a bird to be grateful. it's sick.

I will not celebrate it.. I guess it is easy for me

since i am neither pilgrim nor native indian

either way, being humble everyday is the best thing.

I will however celebrate THE FALL/AUTOUM. We must Celebrate the seasons..

embrace change.

Hi Anouk

I agree. After many years as a kid running from Gramma to Gramma on

holidays. Then when Zak was born, both DH and I have divorced

parents, so every holiday was a week long of running. My Gramma's,

his dad, his Mom, my dad and occasionally my Mom.

Finally now it is held here and my dad comes over. And we sit, eat,

relax, chit chat, play cards and just have a nice get-together.

For Thanksgiving we use to go to his Mom's the weekend before, then

on Thanksgiving his Dad's and then My Gramma, day after Thanksgiving

had my dad and his dad and wife over, then the weekend after if my

Mom couldn't make it to my Gramma's we went there. FORGET IT! It

became a chore and not a fun, relaxing family event.

Now that we have lost the majority of the family through moves and

disagreements, we just do Holidays here with my Dad. And we actually

have a nice time.

Nikki :)

Its that time of year again where intensively produced turkeys are shitting themselves, in anticipation of the mass slaughter to follow their short lifespans. What I dont understand is this traditional nonsense, where no-one buys turkey for 11 months a year, then everybody has a corpse for chrimbo, why? Sadly my complaints ( and those of my daughters ) fall on deaf ears with my wife..............sigh............. The Valley Vegan..............Peter H

I just joined the vegan chat list a few days ago, but I had to chime in on this one. I'm a member of another list in which I mentioned in a recent post (responding to another vegan's lament) that one of the things I really hate about "thanksgiving" is seeing little kids, namely my nieces, tearing at the body parts of a poor chemical-and hormone-laced turkey mutant. Then, I mentioned the wild turkeys that live on our land and how magnificent they are, how they can even fly, etc. It was a pretty innocuous post as posts go, but I got flamed pretty viciously in private for even mentioning the word "vegan." So these good people will go ahead and have their chemical butterballs and try to forget about my evil, inconveniently truthful post......it reminds me of this woman my sister went to school with who announced one day that seeing a homeless person digging through a garbage can had spoiled her whole afternoon....

welcome carolyn

its a sad truth that people get wrapped up in their own worlds, and hate to have anything "rock the boat"

if something comes along that questions or makes them look at their belief systems, they generally get all up in arms

few like to be questioned..........

hi carolyn,

i get that all the time in other gruops

I belong to a gardening one and an earth mommmy one.

they claim to be liberal and acepting but when I say anything

that is questioning or different, they want to kill me.

I try being super polite but they still hate me.

now I say nothing.

I think that vegans get that all the time, in life or online.

because I have taken a stand to not hurt other beings,

they believe that I am a walking statement of " I am morally superior "

but really, I am just a person who is learning all the time

not superior.

Hi Carolyn, Reality sucks and so does striking a chord no matter how small with peoples conciences. Shit happens, accpet it and deal with it and try and do something about it, unfortunately a alot of people are too far up their own backsides to care about anything other than their own consumer driven lifestyles............mindsets are strange things. Hi Peter

Usually the people who buy a turkey for Chirstmas are spending the rest of the year buying other animals to eat. It's not like they are veggie/vegan all year and then decide to have a turkey.
