Hi Peter / Peter (VV)

I was wondering why Peter (VV) is surprised that old rock/metal bands

are still going. Do punk bands give up after a few years?

Maiden and Priest are both still going. I gather that Wishbone Ash is

currently doing a tour, Sabbath still get together for the occassional

show. I believe Deep Purple are still hanging around as well.

HI Peter

When we saw them they were excellent - maybe it's just that Peter

(VV) doesn't like their music, so doesn't recognise their worth.

Hi Peter

They are nothing like Def Leppard. So other than Iron Maiden, who do

they remind you of??? Off-hand, I can't think of any other bands.

Maybe some prog went stale, but being prog a lot of it sort of .....

progressed! I can think of lots of different bands in the prog

rock/metal field who have different styles to each other. Maybe it

is just that you are unaware of their existence (my introduction to

drums was hearing a ten-minute drum solo by Gene Krupa when I was

very young). As for long guitar and drum solos - some of us enjoy

them, just as some others may enjoy political lyrics being shouted

out in an aggressive manner (and some of us may not!). Musical

masturbation - what point are you trying to make - do you think

musicians should not enjoy what they are doing?

As for Johnny Cash etc. There will always be some people more famous

than others but fame has nothing to do with quality, and it is not

only the most famous bands/people in the world who give pleasure to

people. Musical heritage - mmmmm! Why does there need to be a

musical heritage?

around that time my music tastes shifted somewhat, and I stopped

listening to new rock bands and sort of went punk/indie-ish. A lot of

prog rock just got stale for me around that time too, you know the

sort of thing, 12 minute guitar solos, oooh a 15 minute drum solo,

ooh thats original, just seemed to be the equivalent of musical

masturbation to me . Just my opinion tis all.

Saxon/Magnum et all ) will ever be as legendary/infamous as the likes

Are there any good guitarists out there anymore in bands? Seems they are all 3 chord wonders. The only one I can think of that can make a guitar "sing" is Lang.

Muscial masturbation is a term that musicians came up with decades ago to

describe glory hound soloists for hogged time in recordings and live gigs.

Sure some folks enjoyed those solos but in general, their fellow band

members AND audiences weren't that impressed and it was all about stroking

their own egos and are like those gratuitous sex scenes in movies which add

nothing to the plot and are simply there to be there.

And what you don't seem to get about JC is he isn't about being famous he is

about being a part of history and his music which he and his wife wrote,

tell a part of history which will live on long past most of the bands that

most of us have listened to. When he sang he wasn't just singing, he felt

the songs, he was the songs. If you don't get it, you don't get it. He

didn't have a great voice but it never was about his voice.

I'm not a huge fan of Saxon, but do appreciate their music when I hear it. The real question is... which one were they like? Iron Maiden or Def Leppard... I mean, the two are wiles apart in terms of style. Maiden are classic NWOBHM, Def Leppard are much more heavy rock.

Depends entirely on how much publicity they get. I think Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple are rapidly approaching that legendary status (is there anyone who hasn't heard of them in the Western world????). Just about everyone knows Stairway to Heaven and Smoke on The Water, even if they don't know who played them.

How can you possibly say that KK Downing is not a virtuoso guitarist compared to Blackmore or Page? I mean, Blackmore and Page admittedly have good imagination, but they're not the best around by any stretch of the imagination and compare them to the likes of Downing / Dave Murray / Adrian Smith, they're certainly no better.

Hmmmm, let me think...

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Al Pitrelli (Savatage)

Alan Morse (Spocks Beard)

Trey Azagthoth (Jo - what's that band's name... I've gone blank!!!)

Luca Turilli (Rhapsody)

Jacob Kjaer (Royal Hunt)

James Murphy (too many bands to name)

Alex Skolnick (Testament / Savatage)

Craig Goldy (Dio)

Viv Campbell (Def Leppard)

Chris Caffrey (Savatage)

Vinnie Burns

Chris France (Ten)

Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius)

Michael Romeo (Symphony X)

Ralph Santolla (Millenium)

Matthias Lange (Metallium)

Yngwie Malmsteen

Chris Impelliterri

Joe Satriani

Steve Vai

KK Downing (Judas Priest)

Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society)

Michael Amott (Arch Enemy)

And that's just off the top of my head... if I was to really think about it, I'm sure I could come up with another 100 or so.

Why would it be weird Fraggle?

Nobody ever seems to mind coming out with us. Our daughter has come to

concerts with us, and one of Peter's friends came to a couple of concerts

with us, and Peter of course. There's a young chap where I work who came to

a

concert with us a couple of weeks ago, had a really good time and is coming

to Arch Enemy with us.

Youngsters that we don't know at the concerts are very friendly towards us

and chat. I have often had people come up to me and say which concerts

they've seen me at and start up a conversation, like at the Bloodstock

festival where we chatted about bands with about a dozen of them. The

concert before last we were greeted happily by someone who had seen us at

another concert, and even hugged! I don't think Peter has ever felt

uncomfortable coming out with us - I'm sure he wouldn't come if he did.

I know you said you didn't want to cause offense, and I'm not overly

offended, but ... we're normal people - metal fans - and age shouldn't

matter.

Hi Peter

Trey Azagthoth is in Morbid Angel.

I agree with you that there would be at least another 100 excellent guitarists - and then we could go down to the ones who are only 'very good'.

Hi Jo,

Most bands split at some time no matter what music they play, I guess some just know when to call it a day, and others just try and live on past glories and cash in on the name even when the more talented and original members have left. It gets sad to see bands like that, look what happened to Purple / Sabbath etc....

Hmmmm, let me think...

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Al Pitrelli (Savatage)

Alan Morse (Spocks Beard)

Trey Azagthoth (Jo - what's that band's name... I've gone blank!!!)

Luca Turilli (Rhapsody)

Jacob Kjaer (Royal Hunt)

James Murphy (too many bands to name)

Alex Skolnick (Testament / Savatage)

Craig Goldy (Dio)

Viv Campbell (Def Leppard)

Chris Caffrey (Savatage)

Vinnie Burns

Chris France (Ten)

Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius)

Michael Romeo (Symphony X)

Ralph Santolla (Millenium)

Matthias Lange (Metallium)

Yngwie Malmsteen

Chris Impelliterri

Joe Satriani

Steve Vai

KK Downing (Judas Priest)

Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society)

Michael Amott (Arch Enemy)

And that's just off the top of my head... if I was to really think about it, I'm sure I could come up with another 100 or so.

Maybe it was a lack of confidence on your part. I never minded going out

with my parents, neither did my brother. Peter did loads of other stuff

with friends, as did we, so why not enjoy concerts together if you like the

same things?

I am so glad that I am provoking such a response!

I never said they were like Def Leppard, I said that they were not in the same league and that they were like every other band around at the time ( I think the NME coined the phrase New Wave Of British Heavy Metal around then ).

As for prog rock going stale with self indulgence, well thats partially what prompted punk in the first place and many other garage bands going back to basics - three chord, three minute heroes.

Heritage?

features belonging to the culture of a particular society, such as traditions, languages or buildings, which still exist from the past and which have a historical importance:you feel no need for history, well thats up to you. I personally feel that originators are worth their weight in gold particulary in the music business, and their place in history cannot be denied.

P.S. I loved Spinal Tap

Hi PeterThey are nothing like Def Leppard. So other than Iron Maiden, who do they remind you of??? Off-hand, I can't think of any other bands.Maybe some prog went stale, but being prog a lot of it sort of ..... progressed! I can think of lots of different bands in the prog rock/metal field who have different styles to each other. Maybe it is just that you are unaware of their existence (my introduction to drums was hearing a ten-minute drum solo by Gene Krupa when I was very young). As for long guitar and drum solos - some of us enjoy them, just as some others may enjoy political lyrics being shouted out in an aggressive manner (and some of us may not!). Musical masturbation - what point are you trying to make - do you think musicians should not enjoy what they are doing? As for Johnny Cash etc. There will always be some

people more famous than others but fame has nothing to do with quality, and it is not only the most famous bands/people in the world who give pleasure to people. Musical heritage - mmmmm! Why does there need to be a musical heritage?Jo , peter hurd wrote:>> My problem with them was they were like every other band around at the time, only not in the same league as the likes of Iron Maiden an Def Lepard, neither of whom I was partial to. It is probably because around that time my music tastes shifted somewhat, and I stopped listening to new rock bands and sort of went punk/indie-ish. A lot of prog rock just got stale for me around that time too, you know the sort of thing, 12 minute guitar solos, oooh a 15 minute drum solo, ooh thats original, just seemed to be the equivalent of musical masturbation to me . Just my opinion tis all.> Oh and by the

way, I doubt whether any of the bands of that ilk ( Saxon/Magnum et all ) will ever be as legendary/infamous as the likes of Johnny Cash, whos musical heritage goes back to Sun Records with Elvis etc . How you gonna go?

Stairway to Heaven is there and has been for many years. At one point it was the most played song in the world. More sheet music has been sold for Stairway than any other song. It is even musak and used on some elevators now <g> Oh, and has been to court as being Satanic if played backwards. Supposedly in Urdu in the "if there's a bustle in your hedgerow" it says sayntin. And "I sing because I live with Satan. The Lord turns me off -- there's no escaping it. Here's to my sweet Satan, whose power is Satan. He will give you 666. I live for Satan." Yup. Testimony given right here in sunny California in 1982!

If you hmm the chorus of Smoke on the Water a whole bunch of folks will remember it. If you mention Ozzie most folks will relate to Black Sabbath. Some folks will know who Def is if you mention the one armed drummer but they won't be able to name even one song. The rest of them won't even remember the band.

As to the other bands, the average music listener won't have a clue.

Having never been a particular fan of Purple, I don't really know a comparison after various people left (altough I could be cheeky and say that they were never the same after Rod Evans departed :-)). I agree with you largely on Sabbath - although I enjoyed all of the albums they did with Dio (IMHO, Dehumanizer is an under-rated classic). Then there's some bands who keep on going, and just keep getting better... Judas Priest being a prime example. Dream Theater have now been going for 20 years, and they keep going from strength to strength, Rush seem to keep getting better after some 3 decades. I don't think Magnum are as good in the song-writing department as they were a few years back, but their live performances are quite a bit better than they were in the late 1990s. And let's not forget Queen, who were going strong for around 20 years, and still getting better with every album. Considering that Brian May and Roger Taylor are still playing and writing, I suspect that Queen would still be going strong now were it not for Freddie dying. I think it just depends on the band!
