Thanks for the welcomes. They are much appreciated. And to answer the

question about the gender of the " bully " he is male. He has not said

one inappropriate word to me today, so perhaps my intervention

yesterday worked... Time will tell.

Welcome! Glad to meet one more person going vegan...it all adds up and gives the rest of us support to. And you are not alone and when one is isolated as you are right now having a support community even if it is on line is good. You just have to find a fit and there aren't many groups out there. Have you done a search of your local area to find out if there are any groups that hold potlucks, gatherings, educational sessions? We are in a University town and of course there is a SETA there....Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals who are very active. We have a vegetarian educational network, and there is a group that holds a monthly potluck...they ask that food be vegan and give guidelines, but they also check the food so that the non-vegan foods can be set on another table so there is no confusion. I know that you are really busy, but maybe you could check out resources...just even a note in the classifieds or community section especially the college rags calling all vegans together. Or maybe if you find a couple more you could start something. (not WWIII please though) Populations of 100,000 are definitely going to have other vegans...you just have to find them. Just what you need to add to your plate. LOL As a matter of fact I think that we should have a potluck right here....everyone could send their most favorite vegan recipe ever. Cooperation from the men might be sketchy though. <grinning> They like their beer and wine I think. < lol>

Are you doing the postdoc fellowship now? I was a bit confused by the second to last hurdle thing...are you saying the professorship will be the last hurdle? Or is there some other hurdle after the fellowship? What did you get your doctoral degree in?

Hello all. I have been lurking for a few days to get a sense if this group was a good match for me. My name is Barbara and I am a 32 year old vegetarian in the US. Presently I live in Texas but I am from Arizona. I rarely consume any dairy and when I do, it is when I am outside the house. I have decided that it is now time to completely cut it from my diet, as well as nonvegan sugars and wine. I am pleased to find this group. Although there are moments in most vegan/veggies lives that can be trying, for the most part I have had it pretty good. In my family of origin, the vegetarians outnumber the meat eaters by one! And there are so many health issues that we are very accustomed to making accomodations for one another. I am living in Texas - far from my support systems - to complete the second to last hurdle in my professional training (the postdoc fellowship). I am struggling here, unfortunately. I live in a small community (pop 100,000) and am literally surrounded by very politically and religiously conservative carnivores. Some of my coworkers are great. Others are considerably intolerant and rude. One of whom is going to have to knock it off very soon. I have not yet decided how I will handle this person, as my efforts thus far have been unsuccessful. As I was saying, I am very happy to find an online community in which I can obtain some support. At minimum, it comforts me to see evidence that I am not the only liberal left! Barbara

I too am in a college town (College Station, TX - home of Texas A & M).

There is a very tiny natural foods store here but they don't have a

community bulletin board. I have not (yet) found any groups

affiliated with the university or outside of it. My expectations of a

college town was that there would be a relatively diverse population

but that has not been my experience. It is rather homogenous here.

They don't even carry Vegetarian Times at the large chain bookstore

in town! It is possible there is a small group somewhere and I will

have to look harder to find them.

Anyway - I would love to exchange recipes online. I love to cook and

try new foods.

Hi Barbara,

It is really good to hear you are going vegan and good to hear you have found

some

support. I think social support is one of the most important things to keep it

up.

I am sure requests for recipes will be welcome here and I would love to hear

what you have

been cooking. One of my favourite questions or other vegans is: what is in your

refrigerator? " wierd maybe but there it is.

Have you tried http://vegweb.com/recipes/

http://www.vegsource.com/

and

http://www.vegan-food.net/menus.html

All recipe sites.

I live in UK but have visited Austin Texas, which seemed quite veggie friendly?

Here in UK no large bookshops carry any vegetarian magazines, maybe you could

ask the

natural foodstore to stock it, or take out a subscription? as for the

noticeboard, perhaps if

you ask nicely they will supply one, you could even offer to provide it for them

(cork

noticeboards are fairly inexpensive here). We have a saying here in Northern

England: " Shy

bairns get nowt " translates- if you don't ask, you won't get!!!

Hi Peter

Are you nutty? :-)

Sounds like you need to refill your freezer. Our freezer is stuffed now, especially as we have just made a cake for the Yule log, and a lemon cake and put them in the couple of remaining spaces.

First, I would like to wish condolances to the loss of your wife. You

are obviously trying to turn around such a tragedy and make something

positive out of it. I am curious, since your introduction did not

say, do you promote vegetarianism as one of the act of kindness on

your website? Standing up for those who cannot stand up for

themselves and who really cannot even come out and thank you for your

efforts is probobly the most important and rewarding act of kindness

that you can do, IMO anyway.
