Gorp is the snack staple of hikers. Nuts, dried fruits, chocolate

bits, spicy crackers, etc. all mixed together in any combo you like.

Yum!

How much fat are you eating? Avocados, nuts and seeds are all high fat

fats - granted good fat, but anything not in moderation is bad for you.

How much exercise are you getting?

I've been dealing with a slow thyroid as well - it needs iodine AND

exercise. How do you feel about seaweed? My doc has had me on

liquid-kelp and digestive bitters as a supplement - when I first started

seeing him, I couldn't do raw foods - everything kept shutting down.

But now I am thriving on it and no longer need the supplements! As for

exercise - get a pedometer - walking (especially outside) is GREAT for

you - try to do 10,000 steps per day. I was doing that from March to

June and lost 50 lbs with great ease! Since then I've been going

through massage school, so I have only maintained my weight, not lost

any. That's all about to change now:-) I graduated last weekend!!!

Well, I am definitely not getting enough exercise due to chronic

disabilities. It started 2 years ago and I gained 70lbs. I used to

be really super skinny and very extremely active. I got a bad

migraine at the end of November and lost 20lbs in 2 weeks....strange.

Five have come back on since going raw (but still not 100% raw).

Fats are limited. I just bought some nori, but other than that I

haven't tried any sea vegetables yet. I do have a dulse extract

supplement in my cupboard. Maybe I should start taking that again.

Congratulations on graduating!

Are you able to walk? Even short periods of time throughout the day are

beneficial. Do you think you can do 5 - 15 minutes at a time?

Hi Di,

How much nuts, avocadoes, bananas and high calorie foods are you eating

daily? Many people eat too many nuts, raw crackers, etc. on a raw diet.

Also I have heard coconut oil helps people lose weight. I don't know if

the young raw coconut is better or not, but coconut oil is certainly

easier to buy, open, and eat. :-)

If you choose coconut oil, consume about 3 1/2 tablespoons each day.

Also buy virgin organic coconut oil. I buy it from:

http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/virgin_coconut_oil.htm

While I was getting the link for you I saw they're having a sale. This

is the best time to buy! Whoohoo!

Walking is actually a tough one for me because I have a lot of pain in

my hips. When I am up and about I try to make sure I am doing

something useful like a bit of housework. I was managing to get in 3-4

yoga sessions/week, but lately not even that. I would love to get out

of the house more when the weather warms up a bit!! :)

I have been trying to figure that out....what am I eating that is doing

this. Usually one banana a day, maybe a small handful of nuts/seeds

per day(like 6 almonds), one avacado a week. I haven't tried any of

the raw crackers. Well, I did make a batch, but didn't care for it. I

guess there's the possibility I am actually not eating enough and the

body is going into a " starvation " mode. Maybe?

Hi!

I've been reading your posts with some interest since I'm hypothyroid

and have, normally, a very slow metabolism. However, I eat a LOT and

am losing weight so it may be that you are, as you suggested,

in " starvation " mode. My breakfast this morning was 2.5 C fresh

squeezed OJ, four small bananas blended with 1/3 C blueberries and a

large handful of spinach, and half a good-sized mango. I had a large

orange and a few kumquats mid-morning. Lunch was four small bananas

and a small pear (I can't have anything at work that takes more than

a half hour to eat). When I get home, I'll probably have something

like the rest of the mango and then some tomatoes and a large salad

with either some nuts or a half avocado for supper. I usually end up

with around 1500-1700 calories a day but I'm staying pretty

consistently below 10% fat. One formula that I'm familiar with that

will give you an idea of how many calories you need is to take your

ideal weight and multiply by 10. This will tell you your " baseline "

requirement. That's how many you need if you are flat of your back 24

hours a day and just breathing. You add calories according to your

activities. An account on www.fitday.com is an interesting thing to

do. I have one that's public but you don't have to let anyone see it

but you if you want.

I started out at, probably, 182 pounds (from a high of 187.5) when I

started eating raw back in June. I'm at 135 now and still losing. I'm

losing slowly but that's okay as long as I'm not gaining. :)

As for the raw crackers, I have made several different kinds months

ago and most of them are still in the freezer. I eat a few once in

awhile but I prefer juicy " real " food that isn't trying to mimic

something it isn't.

This is one time in my life that I have been able to eat all I want

to, be satisfied, and not gain weight and I'm loving it!

Good luck!

even if you cant get to yoga class....do the bridge pose at least once a day for

a few min. In time, you will eliminate that pain in your hip!

There a lot of yoga positions you can do sitting and lying on the floor. My

suggestion is do any of the Yoga positions your remember from the class

in sitting and lying on floor. If you don't remember the positions, there

are a lot of website with information about it. Also, there are plenty of

books

on the them. Some of them are very easy.

Also, eat more frequently through out the day. This fires up the metabolism

through out the day. This is useful for all the people who have low metabolism

and want to lose some weight !

Cheers,

- Hemant.

Jesushy,

Just as a heads up, you are probably eating too many bananas. Because of the

high sugar content (although its " natural " , 4 or 8 bananas a day is really too

much. how about having an apple instead (it will give you great fiber!!) Try to

cut back/ go easy an the bananas ( I know its hard..i love bananas myself...).

Good job on getting back into eating raw.......

Hi, Jen,

Actually, since I've been eating raw, I have only had one cooked meal

and I ended up feeling sick. So...I haven't been " out of " raw so I can't

get " back into " eating raw. That being said--I know I'm getting

technical :)-- you sound like someone who has been eating raw for a long

time. I'm always concerned about if I'm doing it right so I would

appreciate your insight on what a day's intake should be. Could you give

me a sample menu? But don't include apples because I'm not a great apple

lover. Sorry. I love applesauce but it's the kind that has to be cooked.

I've tried several different raw applesauce recipes and they all

eventually leave me cold. I'll appreciate any information you can give

me about what would be the best for me to eat. I was under the

impression that bananas were the perfect food and ideal to be the main

staple of the raw food diet. I realize this

<http://www.turbana.com/produ_recipes/benefits.htm> is a banana

producer's web site but it says to eat five to ten bananas a day. There

are a couple of articles there by Dr. Doug Graham, too. With so many

different theories out there, how do you choose what to eat?

Thanks for your help,

Tommie

Do you think that if someone ate 2 bananas and one avocado every day (among

other things) that it would inhibit losing weight? Is it too much to have

an avocado every day?

Jennifer,

It may inhibit losing weight. I'm no expert, but I think that It depends on

what else is eaten through out the day and how active one is. If you are getting

an adequate amount of exercise, and eating lots of different fruits and

vegetables, 2 bananas and an avocado may be fine.

I personally think that you should try to switch things around, and not have a

banana or avocado EVERY DAY. See how you do...and take it from there. Maybe you

can handle more, or should have less, depending on how your body responds. Young

Coconuts and nuts are also good for fat/energy, but too many will increase the

weight gain (this is my experience at least). If you want to lose weight, you

probably need to try to have more veggies, and then second, fruit. I'm in the

same boat as you...I'm trying to lose weight. I think i need to cut back on

fruit and nuts. I'm still trying to figure it out...lol! Hope that helps.......

Tommie,

Sorry I called you Jerushy (good guess huh..lol). I don't mind you being

" technical " ...I'm glad you explained where you're coming from. I had to laugh at

your comment, " you sound like someone who has been eating raw for a long time "

and at the same time - I feel humbled. While been around " health " for a long

time, thanks to my dad, I haven't been eating raw long. And I haven't been

eating 100% raw, but as close as I can. Bananas are healthy, and perfect for

smoothies, but not more than one or two a day (and maybe less, like every other

day). The guys that advocate 5 or 6 bananas a day are sorely mistaken! Too much

at one time will cause your blood sugar levels to spike. And if you have any

problems (like me) with an overgrowth of Candida (too much bad bacteria in

body), they should be avoided all together (I just try to only have a few in

smoothies per week).

Since you asked, a day may look like this:

Morning:

2 tall glasses of water upon arising

A Tall glass of grapefruit/green drink( freshly squeezed red grapefruit

juice, stevia to taste, and 1T super green formula)

Smoothie (bunny spice: 1C of carrot juice, I C of raw almond milk, fresh

ginger juice to taste, and 2 C of bananas. This is enough for 2 servings, so

don't drink all at once ;-)) or almond milk/fruit smoothie

Big salad ( maybe some of the following: Spring mix greens, cilantro, small

handful of fresh mint leaves, avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, nuts, etc)

Mid-Afternoon / Evening

A piece of fruit for snack

Raw crackers

Salad (if I didn't have one in earlier)

Something non-raw such as cooked Salmon.

Raw ice cream or some other snack

I drink probably 10 tall glasses of water in a day. Ask if you need me to

clarify anything I said that may have not made sense. Try not to worry about

doing everything " right. " ( Food is only a part of health...my relationship with

God and others is very important part too). I'm still learning too and i don't

always know what " theories " are right. All I know is " balance " is

important...not eating too much of anything or eating too extreme. Good job for

trying to learn as much as you can. Hope i gave you a few helpful tips........

Tommie

Because of the high sugar content (although its " natural " , 4 or 8

bananas a day is really too much. how about having an apple instead (it

will give you great fiber!!) Try to cut back/ go easy an the bananas ( I

know its hard..i love bananas myself...). Good job on getting back into

eating raw.......

Do you think that if someone ate 2 bananas and one avocado every day

(among

other things) that it would inhibit losing weight? Is it too much to

have

an avocado every day?

I know this is a late response, been a busy weekend and I'm just

catching up on Wednesday *lol* anyway I have an avocado almost every

day and most days 1.5 bananas in a smoothie for breakfast. I've been

raw for only 21 days but I've lost 10lbs. One thing I do want to say

is that I have 70lbs to loose, just from experience it seems that the

more you have to loose the easier it is.

Hope that helps!

I weighed myself this morning and have put on a kilo since changing my

diet. But my energy levels feel much better, and I spend much less time

feeling hungry. I am having a really solid breakfast, but it is far more

food than I am used to eating in the morning. However, I am finding I

need less food for lunch and dinner...I have to be careful not to leave

them too late as I am often not really hungry.

I guess I need to move onto step 2 to see whats going on. I am not

eating much sugar at all, but I am having tea with a small tsp of honey.

I am not stopping myself from eating sugar if I crave it, I am just not

feeling like it as much.

But, I don't want my weight to keep creeping up either, so any

suggestions?I am not overweight, but don't want to put on any more. It

is probably because as a vegetarian, to get enough protein, many sources

are also high in fat...cheese and nuts... It is the middle of a very hot

summer here, so my normal exercise of walking is inhibited by only being

able to go out early morning or dusk....I am sounding like a whinger !

thanks

Hi Peela

My personal experience is that I go by what my body says and don't get too

worked up by the fluctuations in the scale. I have found that my weight ebbs and

flows a little bit as I do RR and i am OK with that because I feel steadier and

more energetic than ever before in my life, not to mention happy, anxiety and

depression-free, craving-free, etc! It worked well for me to get steady on step

7 and then deal with the weight stuff. If you feel good about breakfast then I

think going on to step 2 is a great idea!

hi Peela

the best thing you can do is do what I did and hide the scales

somewhere. Not being flippant, its just that it distracted me nicely

from my step and I got all worried.

I did gain a bit ( I was adding food, from a big diet mentality of

mine) but as I healed and steadied, everything else did and I evened

out.

you sound really insightful listening to your body and its great news

about your energy levels.

if you think you are getting lots of cheese etc, do you like lentils,

tofu. seitan , other nice dense proteins? Variety being the spice of

life :)
