Not sure if this helps, since I'm vegan, but I've found my

weight has dropped and my metabolism has sped up. This

is probably helped by the fact that I try for a raw food

based diet. I find it's still possible to eat very badly while

staying vegan, but that if i provide my body with the right

fuel (raw fruit and veg) i stay a lot closer to optimal health.

Processed food is bad, mmmkay? *lol*

I did at first when I didn't know what I was doing. When you just cut meat out of your diet at age 14, you tend to eat more carbohydrates to fill you up...when instead you should be eating much more raw fruits and veggies and things with protein like beans, nuts, and peanut butter (my favorite) ;) Now I maintain my weight since I'm vegetarian on my way to veganism. I'm slowly cutting out dairy instead of stopping suddenly. Your body and eating habits have to adjust. That was just off the top of my head, from my own experience. Hope it helped.~*Ashley*~

I have gone thru periods of weight gain, off and on, but usually it's

because I have been overeating (e.g. holidays, etc) and not getting

enough exercise (wintertime blahs). I am just the kind of person who

needs to watch their diet no matter what. Perhaps you are too. I

try to watch my food preparation techniques (e.g. nothing fried or

deep-fried) avoid high-fat foods (watch out for things with lots of

nuts, tahini) use oils sparingly, cut out sweets, limit the pastas

and breads...just all the things one would usually do if they were

watching their weight.

My thought would be that it's the while you're losing fat through diet, you're

gaining muscle through exercise kind of thing. An inch of fat would weigh less

than an inch of muscle gained.

muscle weighs more than fat........you are exercising more,

therefore gaining muscle [and probably loosing fat as well]. what is

your BMI to begin with? if your BMI is normal to below normal, it

would be expected that one would gain weight with additional

exercise.

 

In case you are not sure of your BMI here is a site I found just now

that will calculate it for you, and tells a bit about it, as well.

Great minds think alike ... i just posted the same thought. Other gauges would

be the tape measure and how clothing fits (if they're loose despite gaining,

you're gaining muscle for that fat). Oh, a diet group I used to be in also

touted that fat contained the type of female hormones that make for premenstrual

discomfort and that for some women losing excess fat eased those symptoms.

Well I'd rather not say but this should give a good idea... my BMI is 30+ and

its not like i'm exercising a whole lot. 10 minutes yoga, 10 minutes pilates

and the sometimes a 20 minute walk or swim.

Well I'm desparately trying to lose weight. Hence one of the reason for

becoming vegetarian. I'm 243 @ 5'7''. I know I'm a cow, whatever I'm trying.

I've been taking in between 1200 to 1300 calories for about a month and a half

(maybe a little longer) and then this past week or so I stopped eating meat

completely and the exercises I've already mentioned.

 

Its just frustrating because before the past week or so with the exercise and

stopping of meat I had been losing (15lbs total) and then after the change in

meat and exercise (which to me doesn't sound like a whole lot of exercise or

even that extreme muscle building granted it is yoga and pilates) I gained back

almost 5lbs now.

 

I guess my pants fit about the same as the 15lb loss, I mean they didn't get

tighter but I'm looking for looser not the same! ;)

 

Thanks for all the imput everyone, I'm just stumped I guess... or i'll just have

to pretend i'm gaining so much muscle! =P

me? i would watch how much starch i was eating...aka pasta,rice ect i

read somewhere something like 1/2c is 200 calories... could be

wrong...still i freaked and have cut down pasta/rice portions...

now in pasta salads i use half the pasta and up the veggies..in

lasagna i roll up one noodle instead of doing it pan style..little

shorts cuts and tricks help..

purhaps if you are willing posting what you have had in a day this

week would give us a idea?

also everyone is diffrent..we all have diffrent triggers..some are

starch others are fat ect..listen to your body it is always talking

to ya!

I used to eat a lot of breads... not a huge pasta lover. But since I began

dieting I cut down on breads and pastas. When I eat bread now its whole wheat,

same with pasta when I can.

 

I will try to remember to write down what I eat tomorrow and post it and let

everyone analyze it. How embarassing!! Maybe there is something I'm missing

though and someone will catch it.

why embarressing? hee hee i use dto be the same! lol i just know what

i eat because i watch..when i didnt i couldnt tell ya a thing and

when i did watch i was shocked in how much i ended up eating! no

worries maybe someone will have more ideas...

Honestly I don't know what it would be embarassing. I get between 1200 and 1300

cals per day which is what most books research whatever says is ideal for me.

 

I just feel weird about telling everyone what I eat, what if it is a lot!

hehe!! I will try to do it though, I had to do it for my doctor and she told me

I was on the right track, I just have to remember.

Do you eat a lot of bread? That could be the reason why you would gain weight.

if it makes you feel better just send to my addy...but i have no

degree or schooling in...thought purhaps others might beable to see

something that reminds them of their own situations..you can do this

and will do this..just takes a bit of tweeking and working out...try

not eating late at night bigger meals midday..ect use all the same

ideas but reapply to this diet..

differently, that way I'll get honest feedback. It will be a little hard to

post it to the group but I'll do it! I'd really like the feedback and if I

i would guess that your problem may be that you are not eating enough. 1200

calories is MUCH too low, especially for a woman who is 5'7 " and 243 lbs.

your metabolism has most likely dropped because your body is using muscle as

fuel. when your metabolism drops, your body will not be able to burn as many

calories off, and you will slowly see plateaus or even weight gain.

 

my calculations show that a woman of your weight who does NO exercise should

be at about 2500 calories. you may want to try a 2000 calorie a day diet and

see how that works for you. HOWEVER-- you should go into this gradually.

if your body is now used to eating 1200 calories, your metabolism will not

come up as quickly as it went down, and it will take time to get used to the new

number. GRADUALLY raise the number of calories per day that you are eating.

 

 

if you have hip/low back pain, there are certain exercises that you should be

doing to help them; you definitely need to strengthen through your lower back

and abdominals. pilates and yoga are good; i'm glad you're doing those.

you may want to try to add more cardio into your routine. the good news is

that you don't have to do it all in one lump sum-- if you can do 10 minutes in

the morning, 10 in the afternoon, and 10 in the evening, your body will respond

to that more or less the same way as it would to 30 minutes of straight

exercise. every little bit helps. weight training is a huge metabolism

booster

as well, and i guarantee that if you add some of that into your exercise

routine (2-3 times per week), you'll see better results.

Well I think you're marvellous - and there's nothing embarrassing about

saying what you eat! I've been following this discussion but not

contributing because I'm trying to lose some weight myself and have hit

a plateau (that's what the fancy dieters call not being able to take any

more off - diet failure, in other words *LOL*) which is always

disheartening. And yes, sometimes when I decide to cut back I find I

have gained rather than lost or even stayed the same - I *think* because

of taking in a lot of extra fluids (which probably means I wasn't

drinking enough before?). The scales can sometimes lie, so take heart ;=)

 

I'm going to write down everything *I* eat today, but whether or not I'm

brave enough to share it is another matter. I'm not officially 'dieting'

this week, you see *LOL* which probably means it's a good week to check

out what does go in the system.

Hi Kelly,

 

First off - congratulate yourself for making such healthy changes to

your life! Everyone hits " plateaus " in weight loss/gain and it's to

be expected. Try revving your exercise up a notch (add handweights

while walking or walk one block more, simple things) or try some

different exercise. This alone should help jumpstart the weight loss

again. Remember, weight gain is a slow process and, unfortunately,

weight loss is too. But you're doing more than losing weight -

you're getting healthier - which translates into a happier, longer

life!

i will start giving a daily menu as well i think some of us newbies

can learn a little from seeing what others eat and purhaps some new

ideas as well!

it makes me sad that you would say that about

yourself.

please be kind to yourself. and remember, you didn't

put the weight on overnight, so you won't be able to

take it off overnight. be patient and stick with your

diet and exercise. you can do it!!

Melody,

 

this is very good advice. I do some weight training probably only once or twice

a week because the pilates really is helping build muscle... i can feel it when

i wake up. I do get some cardio I take walks outside and treadmill but as I've

mentioned can't go very long without my legs hurting. Any suggestions on some

cardio that would be less strenous on my legs and hips? And don't say swimming!

I do that in place of walking some days. =)

 

As for 2000 calories (or 2500!) Thats too much!!! What I'm eating is about all

I can eat. At a meal when I'm full I stop (I try to stop before the disgusting

full feeling). According to my Dieter's Diary for a sedentary lifestyle it

recommends taking desired weight 135 x 12 = 1620 which I could probably do....

I don't know though, I'm just going by this book.

 

I have never had a good metabolism. As long as I can remember. Green tea is

supposed to help that and I try to drink some when I can. I also take a vitamin

(not every day because I forget) which is supposed to help my metabolism.

 

I would feel really bad about myself raising my calories back up to even 1600.

When I was eating meat I was getting about 1400-1500 cals per day and i was

losing weight though. So would raising calories to 1400 with just veggies, I

probably wouldn't gain weight at least... I don't know.

 

Thanks so much for the input I will definately think about what you've said...

but I have to admit I won't raise my cals to 2000 I don't even think I could.

If I did I'd just be eating more fattening unhealthy things... Because my

stomach has shrunk I can't eat as much as I used to so I'd have to eat more

fattening things to get those extra cals. I won't go higher thank 1500... I

don't know why it just sounds scary!

-i misse dthat comment! you are NOT..dont ever think that..everyones

body is diffrent you will work it all out...i used to think being a

size 3 was skinny (yuck)i starved myself for that for years..now i

could care less..ive put my scale away...not concerned with..i

thought my hubby prefered me ultra skinny seems i was wrong..and i

sure love to eat and cook so i dont worry about.being healthy is

whats its all about.i pray everyday for happiness and

healthiness...its not teh size of the body that matters just the size

of the heart...

Hi Kelly,

 

I have found that stationary cycling is a great low-impact exercise.

It's even recommended for people w/ arthritis around their knees, as

it helps loosen the joints w/o putting any real weight on them. Good
