If you decide to check on a B-12 supplement rather than working to ensure that

you get the B-12 in your diet, make sure it's from a veg*n source. There are

many sources for B-12 in a veg*n diet, including commercially prepared milk

alternatives (i.e. soy, rice, almond, etc...), fortified cereals, meat

analogues, and tofu. You can also get it by adding Vegetarian Support Formula

Nutritional Yeast (not Brewers Yeast) to things that you eat. It has a cheesy

flavor. I incorporate it into almost everything I prepare as it is also high in

protein and has many other nutrients as well. Below I have copied the

nutritional information for Red Star Nutritional Yeast. I would think that as

long as it is a vegetarian support formula, other brands would be comparable.

FWIW.

God's Peace,

HUH? No kidding. That isn't what I was asking about. I don't hide foods. I

was wondering how old your daughter is relative to how old my daughter is & what

she will/won't eat, likes/dislikes. I don't think my daughter knows what

vegetarianism is. She doesn't refuse foods but isn't usually very interested in

meat. I know how to make sure my kids get all their nutrients.

know. They should give you healthy alternatives like beans, dairy, eggs,

and believe it or not there is protein in veggies. You may wish to talk to

your doctor about a vitamin B-12 suplement.

Hi Susanna and Welcome from another comparative newbie :)

My name's Laura, I'm 32 and live in Scotland with Sammy-cat (currently

asleep and forcing me to perch on the edge of my seat as he's curled up

behind me!)

I wouldn't call myself a vegetarian *yet*. But I'm getting there ...

Hi everyone - I just wanted to write a quick note to let you know I'm new to

this group - I'm strongly considering going Vegan due to chronic health

problems - I have IBS (with C) - sorry to be graphic! - and all the various

and strange problems that come along with that - inablitity to lose weight,

of course horrible bloating & pain, strong constant muscle cramps,

etc.etc...and have been suffering and feeling sick & miserable everyday for

as long as I can remember. Anyway, I've been speaking to a lot of vegans

and rawfood eaters recently - who've only gotten relief from switching to

that type of diet...and I'm strongly cosidering going that route. I've tried

everything else! So, there's a little background on me - if anyone has any

advice, suggestions, success stories, etc...please let me know! I'm so new

to even vegetarianism...

Hello,

My name is Josie and for years have been yo yo-ing trying to go

strictly veggie. I saw your group and it had a friendly feeling so

here I am. I think most of the time the trouble I have is that I don't

know what to eat and end up thinking all there is is lettuce to eat.

I', in my 60s and diabetic (on pills). I haven't been doing too well

there either. However, it's time I stop trying and start 'doing'.

Any suggestions are welcome. For example: what's for breakfast..,etc

Thanks and have a great day.

Welcome Irene:)

It sounds like you have a difficult situation dealing with an

unsupportive family. My only advice is to arm yourself with solid

information about nutrition (an excellent book is " Becoming Vegan " by

Vesanto Melina). I find myself in regular conflict with my own family

over eating, however I have the support of my husband and I also have a

penchant for debate which tends to make others less likely to bring up

contraversial subjects with me.:) I usually find that their arguments

are based on their feelings and fears rather than on evidence. At

first, having grown up in a non-veg family, I was worried about

" experimenting " with vegetarianism on my children. But I realized that

the Vegetarian " experiment " is actually quite ancient (look at India for

example) and our modern culture is doing a far more risky experiement on

ourselves with the introduction of genetically modified foods and

ultra-processed foods which are depleted in nutrients. I've gained more

confidence as my two children are getting older (aged 2 and 4) and have

developed so well both intellectually, and physically.

Anyway, good luck and I hope this list will give you some helpful

support and advice:)

Irene,

It sounds to me like your son would benefit from meeting other children who had

similar beliefs about meat. Check out www.vegfamily.com, you can do a search

for local playgroups. That might be helpful.

You might find it helpful to find a local vegetarian society. Our local one has

potlucks and other events. Its a nice opportunity to find like minded people.

Your local natural food store would probably be a good place to find out whats

available in your area.

Just some thoughts, hope they are helpful. Over time, it does get easier.

My mother is very unsupportive of our lifestyle, although she tries to

understand. For example, today, she said, " I am making wraps you would like.

They have no meat. " But they did have cream cheese and monzerella cheese in

them. I told her I'd have to find suitable substitutes for the cheese, but it

sounded good. Then my mom got on her soap box that I could not be health, or

raise my daughter healthy without any animal products. She is stuck on,

" nothing but meat and dairy have protein or iron. " I point out to her, while I

ate meat and dairy, I suffered horribly from anemia, since I have stopped

consuming meat and dairy, I no longer have that problem. Of course when I ate

meat and dairy, I was single and ate out a lot, but if meat and dairy were the

only sources, I would still suffer from anemia.

Hi Irene

Welcome aboard!!!

It must be hard when your family doesn't support your stand, Does it

include ur husband too? Does he disapprove being a veggie too?

Just thought i'd share a li'l bit of my past with you,

we (the whole of my family and my husbands family) are vegetarian

(lacto, so we do consume diary products)

In fact where i come from (India) there is a good population of

vegetarians. As our family is brought up this way we (most of us)have

never felt the urge to eat meat, I hope the same will work with my

son, although we never know.

Any regarding our health, i am fit, very normal, infact my dad was in

the forces and he has done a lot of weightlifting and body building

etc... and he has never had meat in his life either.

So to put it short... for a person to be healthy eating meat or not

doesn't count... eating well balanced nutritious food is what matters

And you/your son can have a well balanced vegan food that can keep

you/him healthy. (some things to start with are sprouts, beans and

lentils for protein, green vegetables for fiber, rice and wheat for

carb etc)

hope this helps, Good luck!!!

Hey Darlene!

Welcome to the group!

Do you remember me? You're actually the one who turned me on to the low

fat, no grain, high fruit approach to raw foods, which has made all the

difference - thank you for that!

my name is rich sachs, i've been here a couple of years, eating raw off

and on for 10 years or so. i go with an all produce approach as

opposed to an all fruit approach, about two-thirds fruit, one-third

vegetables and some percentage of raw nuts, a plant food diet i call

it. i have no children, i'm 41, 42 in october, i'm in philadelphia, pa

(suburbs) region. assuming of course, that fruit is defined as plants

with seeds.

peace, joy and fullfillment, honor and glory too, and a little

kindness, a little heartfulness, a little thoughtfulness, a lot of

caring.
