Congratulations Alicia!!!

I, too, became a vegan when I was 20 ... I am 29 now, and still going!

(Aside from a some moments of weakness in the past few years - such as

eating tofu cheese with casein) ...

I hope you enjoy being a part of the list .. it is so informative ... fun,

exciting, and most of all, controversial ... we don't exactly lead

" conventional " lives ... we are trying to make the world a better place and

it definitely takes all kinds to do that sort of thing.

So, welcome to Planet Vegan ... and free your mind ...

Ciao, Konichiwa and Hai Karate!

hello

AliciaJP

Hello everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Alicia. I

am

a 20 year old college student -- currently at Trident Tech in N. Charleston,

but transferring to USC Columbia shortly. I am an aspiring vegan -- not

totally because I still use products that are tested on or have animal

ingredients -- but I WILL NOT purchase any in the future. I have excluded

all meat & dairy. Although I must say that cheese has been the hardest to

give up. I've only been vegan for about 2 1/2 months, so I could certainly

use any encouragement or suggestions that anyone may have.

Thanks,

Alicia

My daughter was three when I decided to change our diet to a vegen diet. I

make the transition very slow by first introducing more vegetarian meals and

then I talking to her about why we were not going to eat meat anymore and

finally not eating any animal products. My mother wants to became a

vegetarian and I suggest that she follow the following transition:

* One Day of All Vegetarian meals for the one week

* Two Days of All Vegetarian meals for the two weeks

* Three Days of All Vegetarian meals for three weeks

* Four Days of All Vegetarian meals for four weeks

* Five Days of All Vegetarian meals for five weeks

* Six Days of All Vegetarian meals for six weeks

* And Finally, everyday all day Vegetarian meals.

This method might be a bit too fast for your children but you can adjust it

by adding more weeks in between to go at a slower pass. The transition is

well worth it for you and your children in the long run because it will be a

healthier diet. My daughter has been a vegen for three years now and is as

healthy as ever. She is in the same weight and height percentage areas for

her age as she was when she was born (65% weight and 50% height). She

rarely gets sick and is very active. Our diet is a balance of the four main

food groups - Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, and Legumes. My daughter loves to

snack as most kids do so intend of chips and cookies she eats raisins,

hummus and pitas, peanut butter and crackers, apples and most fruits and

veggies. Make sure to discuss with your older children about why you

decided it would be healthier to be vegetarian and talk to the little one

about it as well. Explain your feeling behind your decision but also

explain that every person is different and there are different eating habits

for different people. Buy books about vegetarianism for children and make

sure that your family understand your position as well as your children

friends parents. Since my daughter did attended daycare I would bring in

something that was similar to what the other children were having that day.

I don't make a big deal out of us being vegens and therefore my daughter

doesn't. She knew what she can't eat but she isn't miss out on life, she

still eats kids foods like rice cream and toasted soy cheese sandwiches.

She knows she different but I always tell her that being different is what

makes life worth living. One thing I wish is she had some children her age

that were also vegetarians but she will in time.

Good Luck,

Amanda

I applaud your decision, but you should not force your

kids to change to a vegetarian diet if they are

already used to eating meat. Instead, try

incorporating vegetarian meals for dinner slowly,

until you no longer cook meals with meat and see that

they enjoy it. Being a vegetarian and a dietitian,

from a nutritional stand-point, a vegetarian is not

one that just eats vegetables. Don't forget protein

sources- protein is needed for new cell production,

for muscles and tissues. Good protein sources are

eggs, milk, cheese, beans, tofu, peanut butter, and

soy. Depending on what kind of vegetarian that you

are, you could cook for your family a vegetarian

lasagna with spinach, tofu, corn and mushrooms (or

whatever vegetables that you like), white rice and

black beans, spaghetti with tomato sauce and tofu

(drain the water and refill with new water if you

don't use the whole package. Refridg life is about a

week/week and a half), baked stuffed potatoes with

broccoli and cheese, pizza with vegetables, vegetable

soup with pinto beans, grilled cheese and tomato

sandwiches with a salad, vegetable/soy burgers with

lettuce and tomato. Add rolls with your dinner or

tortillas, a vegetable and milk or juice. Good luck.

Hope the family enjoys the new lifestyle!

Hi Christina!

I have an eight year old, six year old, two year old and one year old. We

began the road to being vegetarian several months ago. I found the kids

were happy to try new things when I shared the experience with them instead

of forcing it on them. They help me cook and help me think of menu ideas.

I have had a hard time with quick easy lunches and snacks. They eventually

get tired of peanut butter and jelly! My little girl (6) is thankfully

naturally vegetarian by nature so she was an easy one to convert. She has

ALWAYS chosen veggies and fruit over almost anything. I have some trouble

with my two year old. He doesn't like veggies. It is getting better

though. I just keep putting them on his plate with things he will eat and

he slowly but surely tries them out each time. Our health benefits have

been extraordinary. I suffered from migraines and really bad menstrual

cycles. I have had only ONE headache the entire time I have eaten like this

and not one single menstrual cramp! My kids look healthier too. I have

more energy and feel lighter! I have not dieted one bit and have gone down

two belt notches, (I don't weigh) just from the change to not eating meat.

I hope I have shed a little light and not just rambled. I would be happy to

share ideas on food for the little ones. Just let me know if you have any

ideas!

I'm a committed anarchist, I believe that veganism, environmentalism

always nice to hear about other anarchists :-)

Laura,

the list was started up by a guy in London primarily for a group of vegan

in the south east of england but has kind of spread...

and i lived in Ilkley for a year or so too before i came down to London.

does Betty's Tea Shop do a vegan option on the cinnamon toast? now there

is a campaign to get your teeth into.

for those that dont know Betty's Tea Shop is an institution, the most

English of English Tea Shop for dear little Middle England old ladies

complete with live pianist and [ presumable non-vegan ] bone china.

Hi Christine,

Nice to see a new member on the list. What you said made me think that it'd

be a really nice idea to set up a vegan travel " open-house " scheme.

Provided things go according to plan, as soon as I move I'm happy to take

part in that and I hereby provisionally invite everybody on this list to

visit sunny Leicester when I move to my new house :)

I'd be up for it - provisionally, although just because they are vegan won't

always mean that people are ok to have to come and stay if you

know what I mean. I'm sure there must be a few vegans in the police force for

example - but much as I have tried, I can't get on with that

kind of violence & social control.

If anyone's around cambridge, try giving us a bell. If you can cope with cat,

dog, toddler & kipping on the sofa (soon to be big enough for

two,) & ofcourse being rocked gently to sleep on the river, then most people

would be welcome.

Give us a few day's warning though if possible as we move about a lot. Cups of

tea are ALWAYS on offer.

We live in too tiny a flat to be " open house " unfortunately (only two

bedrooms, one of which is full of junk so we sleep on a sofa-bed in

the living room (new baby will be in there with us for a while, until

s/he goes through the night regularly) and the kids have the small

bedroom, but when we get round to moving somewhere bigger things will

most likely change.

I wouldn't dream of criticising a person for having bigger priorities

than housework!

We are in rather a mess, too cluttered and I need to sort it out, I

need to have a really ruthless clear out, and I have finally started

in preparation for the new baby. I've never been a housework expert,

my mum wasn't into housework either so we lived in clutter, she was

active in animal welfare and rehoming of dogs and cats, although she

has never been veggie. Sometimes the clutter gets me down and I do

something about it. I'll be like a whirlwind for a few days but then

go back to my old habits of letting it all pile up. I am trying to

change, because with so little space, and baby no.3 later this year,

I have to be more organised.

We don't get on many demos but I fully intend to be more active in AR

again when the kids are older. They whinge too much on demos, don't

like the noise of shrill whistles and having to walk a long way,

although they are happy about their vegan identity, and want other

people to be vegan too.

I'm sure most vegans are pleasant company, but there are quite a lot

of vegans and vegetarians in Harrow who just never come to anything I

organise and don't seem very motivated to be sociable. I find this

very frustrating as I want to know these people. I don't understand

why some of these vegans seem to make more effort for meat-eating

friends than they make to get to make friends with other vegans

locally. They have quite strange priorities it seems to me! We should

definitely stick together and be positive that we are likely to like

other vegans! I couldn't agree with you more.
