Doc,

Sadly...Been there done that, and so far not a win. I will not stop

trying though.

It's easy to see why from this article, the way the pharmies push

this stuff, and even worse how teachers and social workers push for

this stuff! it is not uncommon for teachers to report neglect when a

parent does not get their child on meds to correct behavior that is

in many cases just the need for a bit more attention or help. Even

a " special Ed " room is better than sticking every kid on drugs.

In the case of my daughter, it is more a case of laziness, to which i

can only keep trying. We've had this conversation before, but this

article just stired me up again.

Sorry to barge in on this. I just couldn't keep quiet about the

adderall and ritlin medicos put our children on.

My son was diagnosed with ADD. First the teacher said something was

wrong, then the social worker came in and observed him in class and

said " yes, definite ADD " . She gave a note to us to give to our

doctor, who refered us to a children's psychiatrist, who gave him

adderall. Then when my poor child could not sleep and lost a massive

amount of wieght, he wanted to give him a different pill to let him

sleep ( which never worked!). I allowed this to go on for an entire

school year. Then as I watched him walk around like a zombie, a

shadow of his former self. I told my husband " That's it! He is

coming off the pills! Not one more day. " We threw them all away.

We have never gone back to any 'normal' doctor. We go to a

chiropractor who also helps us with nutrition and an acupuncturist.

I now homeschool all four children. We are trying to learn how to

handle everything with herbs and nutrition. That horrible year was

four years ago. I came to the conclusion that public schools can't

handle a kid that needs to touch and feel and DO to learn. My son is

a really great kid. He is funny and a real joker. When he was on

those drugs none of his real self was there.

Sorry to keep rambling. This topic just wrenches my heart. You keep

fighting for those kids, Sylvia.

Lisa,

It really is sad. But i am encouraged to hear that you got your son

off the drugs and he is back to his " old-self " .

My Zach is pretty much the same way. Sometimes he forgets his pill

when they come visiting and i tell him it's Ok because i love him and

i like him as himself anyway. He too was on Ritalin and then Adderol

and i am not sure what he is on now. I just know that he is a zombie

and not a little boy.

I have to keep working on my daughter about doing a cleanse with all

the boys and then her starting Zach on herbals to manage his bad days.

Dont be such a lurker Lisa, this is an excellent story that can

possibly help another mom one day ;o)

This is great to read, her son sounds like mine. He has to touch, taste, and see EVERYTHING. Trying to get him to hold still is like trying to herd cats.

He is only 22 months old and that could have a lot to do with it, but I think he's just going to be one of those kids the gov. might decide to pick on.

I plan to homeschool him. (yes I'm planning WAY ahead)

Candace,

If you plan on home schooling him...your far from planning way ahead...as his education has already started! Now is the time to start on the things he can learn. My son knew his letters...randomly...by the time he was 3 years old. I wish I could take credit for it...but I can't...he would decide he wanted to know something..and I simply expanded on that...

If your son likes to color...or in any way enjoys writing...expand on that...show him things...teach him things...life is an adventure...and a constant form of education...if he shows an interest in something...let him learn about it..find him books on the subject...even if he can't read them himself...read them to him...let him look through the pictures...you will be floored by the things he will learn.

This is a very important age...they are these little sponges...so give him tons of information to absorb!! :o)

According to Dr Glenn Doman, the younger children are, the quicker they can absorb information, and the more permanent this information is! In his book on teaching children to read, he talks about teaching 1 year olds! And having successes too!! Wish I'd known this when Jamie (my son) was that young - never thought of starting him that early.

on this stuff so long we don't even know who he really is. His

parents are totally ensconced in the medicos, their eyes literally

glaze over if someone mentions alternatives. Anna

How would I go about teaching him things at this age? Any time I sit down with him to try and show him letters and numbers and colors, he doesn't pay attention and within 10 seconds he's run off to play. Just when I thought it was doing NO good, he pointed to blue and named it and a few other colors, too. I about fell over. He doesn't even look half the time when I'm showing him.

He's really into balls right now, throwing, kicking, passing them back and forth so I do that with him a lot and he likes matching shapes together and we do that but it's not rocket science he's learning!

I have quite a few Elmo videos he LOVES that teaches numbers and letters and he is always engrossed in them (figure it's better than nothing since he wont' pay attention to me for a minute at a time)

Candace,

ANY Way that you can get them to be interested works!

You could put numbers on the balls, or letters. Have him call out

the numbers or letters and you can throw them to him.

If Elmo can teach him without drugs, then i say go for it! As long

as you keep trying with the other ways as well, it's great.

Hi Candace, I'm not a homeschooler, but I am a mom, and I think you're doing the right thing - "teach" him the stuff he's interested in. I'm unlikely to be interested in stuff other people think I need to know, but when they talk about stuff I'm already interested in, they have my full attention!

The other day I realized he was toying with me... I'd show him the #1 and

he'd yell " TWO! " I'd show him #2 and he'd yell " THREE! "

I thought he wasn't getting it and then I noticed every time he'd say the

wrong number he'd smirk or give a little smile.

I think he knows a lot more than he cares to let on at this point.

Candace,

Sounds like you are off to a good start then. If his attention only allows for 10 minutes...then so be it.

He doesn't need to sit for hours with school books or anything like that...he is not even 2 yet...let him enjoy his childhood. Just make sure that you talk with him about EVERYTHING!! If he likes to kick the ball...count with him...start with counting to 10...he'll get it eventually...then run through the abc's...whatever...repetition is the key with kids his age...he doesn't need rocket science yet...lol...he'll get enough of that later on...for now...make things fun...don't try and force him into learning these things...make it natural...

I homeschooled for several years...unfortunately circumstances made it so I had to put my son back in school...but during our home schooling time...I was more of an unschooler than a sit down and do book work kind of person. I had books and such for him so that when he went to his grandparents house they would feel like they were contributing to his education...lol...but at home...we did lots of things...he learned from field trips...activities...we never went to the store without him having to figure out how much things would cost...add tax...figure out change...etc. If he told me he was interested in a subject...cars...airplanes...the ocean...whatever...we would go to the library and find books on the subjects...we would look them up on the internet....we would figure out ways to make them as fully educational as we could...without ever sitting down to do book work. Those were the best years...we had so much fun!!

Enjoy him while you can...make everything educational...without him even knowing it!! lol

Sometimes I still make the mistake of thinking he's too young to know what's going on. The other day I told DH to distract Brock so I could run outside and do a quick clean of the chicken coupe. (if Brock sees me go outside without him he SCREAMS)

I looked down at Brock and he was giving me the funniest look like "what, are you stupid, I'm not deaf!" and he followed me everywhere I went, he wasn't going to let me escape.

I've always talked to Megan, about everything and anything. I used to have family and friends tease me when I would talk to her like she was a real person (imagine that!) even though she was just a baby! lol! I always told them that, first of all, I clearly remember understanding everything that was going on around me when I was 18 months old. (I really do!) And secondly, even if she didn't understand me, what's the worst that will happen? I'll get in the habit of talking with my daughter! LOL! Well, I don't know if this is why, but she was talking in sentences before 1 yr old, reading by 3 yrs old and just very IN COMMUNICATION! It's awesome! She and I have only had problems when one of us has assumed that the other won't understand for some reason.

WOW I thought Brock was ahead of the game and he's only saying a few broken sentences and a couple dozen words.

I just started talking to him recently. It's just so weird to do because 1. I'm not used to doing it and 2. He usually just gives me a blank stare so sometimes I don't think there's a point to it.

But I'll keep on doing it.

Whenever I got a blank stare from Megan, I just made it fun - "so, you just like listening to mommy talk to herself, don't you! :) " or something and then she usually got tickled and we both ended up laughing!

I found it was more fun to talk to my daughter even if she gave me a blank stare, than to keep talking to myself like I'd been doing for years!! LOL!

Thank you. Yes we did keep him in school for two years after I took

him off the pills. But it was difficult and he wasn't doing well in

that environment. I was scared to death to bring them home to

learn. However, when I got to teaching Math this year I realized

that the teachers had been passing him along and not teaching. He is

in the 6th grade this year, but when we started the year he could

barely add or multiply. And he could not divide at all. It gave me

courage. I knew I could do a better job than that. He still has

days that are a challenge. I send them outside to run it off. Best

medicine for a kid....fresh air and sunshine. :)

Hi Candace,

I suggest then you read his book: "Teach your baby to read" by Glenn Doman. You can find it on Amazon. What he says makes sense, so I guess it works.

His basic is that children that young, cannot distinguish one letter/word from another - can't see the difference between them - in the size of the writing that adults read. With children/babies that young, you need to present BIG letters, and he gives the sizes in the book, and gradually reduce the size of the letters/words as they start learning to read.

He also recommends to teach them to read WORDS and sentences, before teaching them the alphabet - reason for that being that kids who learn the alphabet first, will then read the letters, and not the words! And it's true!! I noticed that with my son Jamie, whom I did try to teach the alphabet first.

Anyhow, read the book LOL and see what you think.

I totally know what you mean about the no-attention!! I've noticed that with my son too, and it shows they really do pay attention, but perhaps not in the way we think of it LOL

love

Re: Herbal Remedies - Some one throw cold water on me before i BLOW!

Candace,

If you plan on home schooling him...your far from planning way ahead...as his education has already started! Now is the time to start on the things he can learn.
