  1. Here's one view that I don't agree with: I don't consider your question a spiritual one but rather a scientific one.<br>Therefore I reccomend you ask it here: http://answers./dir/ under Categories ->Science & Mathematics However do a search there first to see if it has already been answered.
  2. You have incoherently mixed elements of different mythologies. This is also known as 'word jugglery'. Congratulations!
  3. Frankly I quite don't know what to think about this. I would welcome everyone sharing their insights on this story:
  4. That usually refers to Krishna Consciousness aka ISKCON.
  5. Would you please explain the term "Maha Jagat Guru" and why you think it is exemplified by Swami Prabhupada?
  6. I think we would all do well to cool down and try not to offend the sentiments of others by speaking casually about personalities that they might revere.
  7. I think that kind of language violates the terms of use of this forum and you should retract it.
  8. I think trying to figure out what is "sin" is only elementary spirituality - compassion for all living creatures is the basis for vegetarianism IMO.
  9. sambya1, I appreciate that you are a vegetarian and that you are "merely protesting against ... idiotic rigidity of thought", however I would like to comment on your remarks about manu smriti. If "one may eat meatwhen Brahmanas desire", or "in the performance of a rite" or "when one's life is in danger", then we can infer that one normally may not. Logically, the manu smriti is listing exceptions to a generally accepted principle. Otherwise the words "may" would be nonsensical. If meat eating were done in only these circumstances, I for one would not have a problem with it. What is at issue here (for me) is the kind of casual meat consumption which fuels factory farming that most omnivores engage in for the sake of their palate.
  10. One can teach practically anything and say that it is based upon the Vedas in some way. The question should be "Was the common understanding in Vedic times that married people should only use their genitals for procreation?" If so, please provide reference. If not then admit that it is a newer idea. I am not saying that gurus don't have the right to make rules for their disciples but let's be clear if that is what he did; if so then it should only be looked upon as a special discipline for ISKCON members and should not be looked upon as moral principles applicable to everyone - such as do not kill a cow.
  11. Can't gurus make up rules themselves? I don't think his ideas about giving 50% to the work of Krishna or not being able to use your genitals except for procreation are Vedic. If they are please provide reference from the Vedas because I have not read them all.
  12. sant, the links are now up and please bear in mind that I am not trying to say that any of this reflects on Swami Prabhupada who always preached non-violence and even his enemies say was pure; however I feel that purity does not equate to being free from error and everything should be on the table and be subject to discussion for those who feel they want to discuss topics such as these. My warning was because I have learned first hand that Vaishnavs, like people of other religions will sometimes resort to violence when they feel that their sacred icons are disrespected (I myself have been threatened in Los Angeles). Sulocana's Murder http://www.hare-krishna.org/articles/977/1/Sulocanas-Murder---For-the-Record/Page1.html http://harekrishnanetwork.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1105629%3ATopic%3A41748 Killing Sparks Federal Probe of Krishna Sect http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/access/57984345.html?dids=57984345:57984345&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=Jul+20%2C+1986&author=JOHN+DART&pub=Los+Angeles+Times+(pre-1997+Fulltext)&desc=Killing+Sparks+Federal+Probe+of+Krishna+Sect+Group+Members+Cite+Internal+Conflicts%2C+Allege+Threats+After+Disenchanted+Devotee%27s+Murder&pqatl=google
  13. Why not give me a chance to respond before claiming that I can't answer? To answer your question (and of course none of this reflects on Swami Prabhupada who always preached non-violence), there are devotees who are willing to kill if their guru is offended: Sulocana Das was killed by such devotees who felt their guru was offended. Steve Bryant was killed by such devotees who felt their guru was offended. The gurus who were offended are considered less than Swami Prabhupada. Therefore the murder victims were killed for "saying less" than if they had spoken against Swami Prabhupada. Now will you concede this point?
  14. "Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God". Exodus 34:14 (NIV) "You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me" Exodus 20:5 (NIV) "If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again. "If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods you have not known), then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, [a] both its people and its livestock. "Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt. None of those condemned things shall be found in your hands, so that the LORD will turn from his fierce anger; he will show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your forefathers, because you obey the LORD your God, keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes". Deuteronomy 13:6-18 (NIV) Footnotes: [a] Deuteronomy 13:15 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the LORD, often by totally destroying them. Deuteronomy 13:17 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the LORD, often by totally destroying them. 15. You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately people have been killed for saying less and so it is good that these truths can be communicated anonymously.
  16. The statement was not that he claimed to be God but that he was a "bogus person".
  17. In what way is saying "Islam is also Vaishnavism" politically correct? Any Muslim would find it offensive - just go into any mosque and ask.
  18. It doesn't matter in that Swami Prabhupada did not take issue with the question.
  19. I would like to hear everyone's views on the following exchange;
  20. http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe42/index.htm You should ask a Brahmin priest if there are any restrictions. It is consonant with Sanatana Dharma to consult them in any matters relating to the Vedas.
  21. suchandra, I agree that that sentence was not correct and needed to be changed. However a number of things were changed - even useful things like the relevant links that I mentioned. Also as I tried to say before even when change is in order, it would seem to be better to announce it to all on the relevant forum and inform people as to why the changes are being made, if nothing else then just for a 'heads up' (devotees should know that some impersonalists had monkeyed with the page and now it is being corrected). Even better is for interested parties to agree upon the precise language - individuals taking it upon themselves to change back and forth leads to chaos (no disrespect intended towards shiva). Do you agree with anything that I have said?
  22. Did you mean to disable the links in 8. (Achintya Bheda Abheda) and 9. (Bhakti)? They seemed relevant. Also there is a protocol for editing a page on wikipedia. A discussion is entered into with other devotees who have an interest in that page. You post your intent and the wording you propose. Others give you feedback. You may be right in your changes but if everyone doesn't follow some kind of protocol then it would change back and forth daily - creating chaos. Also other devotees may feel disrespected and slighted. Please start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Chaitanya_Mahaprabhu
