Greetings everyone, Make no mistake about it. This recent spate of sniper shootings in the Maryland area are the work our very own federal government. How can I be so sure? Let me put it this way; If someone is found with their hands tied behind their back and a single gunshot wound to the head, the press immediately dubs it a "mob style execution." It has those characteristics. Similarly there are standard trademarks of a government operation written all over the recent sniper killings. One. The marksman (or woman) is exceedingly accurate. One shot, one kill. These are no amateurs. Two. Now they are starting to leave their calling card. I think it was some type of death's head tarot card. That's what special forces like to do. Three. There never seems to be any witnesses. A lunatic would get careless. These folks are extremely professional. Four. It just happens to fit in with the gun-grabbing purposes of disarming America. While these may seem like trivial, contrived clues, to a person who has any awareness whatsoever of what is happening in these times, it is very obvious. Now the phony conservatives, and there are far too many of them, along with the knee-jerk gun-grabbing liberals, are screaming for gun control. They're saying a .22 caliber is "semi-silent" and should be banned. Any deer rifle is a "sniper's gun" and should be banned. Any handgun at all is a "Saturday night special" and should of course be banned. Do you find it hard to believe that our government would kill American citizens? Come on!!! Wake up!! Open your eyes!!! Look at history!!!! There are literally hundreds of examples in which our government has orchestrated the murder of American citizens. Here are just a few. The CIA put Ho Chi Minh in power in Vietnam. Then Lyndon Johnson fabricated the Gulf of Tonkin incident to get us involved in an illegal, undeclared war costing the lives of over a quarter of a million American soldiers and two million Vietnamese. (American deaths were 58,000 combat fatalities plus two or three hundred thousand dead from Agent Orange induced cancer or committed suicide from emotional problems. The loving feds still refuse to admit the Agent Orange-cancer connection.) The military has done numerous biological weapons experiments on American civilians and soldiers without their permission or knowledge. Do the research. Stop being lazy! The military used American soldiers as guinea pigs in their nuclear weapons testing. Why? Because soldiers are cheaper than laboratory animals. (Just like the scene in the movie Braveheart, with Mel Gibson. The English king orders the Irish soldiers to attack the Scots, while having his archers hold their fire. He says to his advisor; "Arrows are expensive. The Irish are cheap.") And of course there is the murder of many Americans at Waco, Ruby Ridge, Oklahoma City and the Pentagon and World Trade Center. ALL of them carried out by U.S. government agencies. Here is a prediction. Sometime soon the "Authorities" will announce that they have captured the sniper conspiracy participants. (It has to be at least two people, one shooter, one driver.) They will be either a couple of Arab men with supposed ties to Iraq or they will be a couple of white guys with a so-called history of white supremecism. There will be much media hoopla and fanfare and calls for stricter gun control. In reality MORE guns are what we need in the hands of American citizens, not the police or military. There is a systematic disinformation and terror system to disarm Americans. This is turning the once great United States into a slave state dictatorship just like so many other countries around the world. Once again, the sniper attacks are 100% certain being carried out by the CIA, Mossad, or a Delta Force type special forces unit. It doesn't matter, they all serve the same masters, viz. The New World Order, the Illuminati. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent samples directly to several Iraqi sites that U.N. weapons inspectors determined were part of Saddam Hussein's biological weapons program, CDC and congressional records from the early 1990s show. Iraq had ordered the samples, claiming it needed them for legitimate medical research. The CDC and a biological sample company, the American Type Culture Collection, sent strains of all the germs Iraq used to make weapons, including anthrax, the bacteria that make botulinum toxin and the germs that cause gas gangrene, the records show. Iraq also got samples of other deadly pathogens, including the West Nile virus. The transfers came in the 1980s, when the United States supported Iraq in its war against Iran. They were detailed in a 1994 Senate Banking Committee report and a 1995 follow-up letter from the CDC to the Senate. The exports were legal at the time and approved under a program administered by the Commerce Department. ''I don't think it would be accurate to say the United States government deliberately provided seed stocks to the Iraqis' biological weapons programs,'' said Jonathan Tucker, a former U.N. biological weapons inspector. ''But they did deliver samples that Iraq said had a legitimate public health purpose, which I think was naive to believe, even at the time.'' The disclosures put the United States in the uncomfortable position of possibly having provided the key ingredients of the weapons America is considering waging war to destroy, said Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va. Byrd entered the documents into the Congressional Record this month. Byrd asked Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld about the germ transfers at a recent Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. Byrd noted that Rumsfeld met Saddam in 1983, when Rumsfeld was President Reagan's Middle East envoy. ''Are we, in fact, now facing the possibility of reaping what we have sown?'' Byrd asked Rumsfeld after reading parts of a Newsweek article on the transfers. ''I have never heard anything like what you've read, I have no knowledge of it whatsoever, and I doubt it,'' Rumsfeld said. He later said he would ask the Defense Department and other government agencies to search their records for evidence of the transfers. Invoices included in the documents read like shopping lists for biological weapons programs. One 1986 shipment from the Virginia-based American Type Culture Collection included three strains of anthrax, six strains of the bacteria that make botulinum toxin and three strains of the bacteria that cause gas gangrene. Iraq later admitted to the United Nations that it had made weapons out of all three. The company sent the bacteria to the University of Baghdad, which U.N. inspectors concluded had been used as a front to acquire samples for Iraq's biological weapons program. The CDC, meanwhile, sent shipments of germs to the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and other agencies involved in Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs. It sent samples in 1986 of botulinum toxin and botulinum toxoid - used to make vaccines against botulinum toxin - directly to the Iraqi chemical and biological weapons complex at al-Muthanna, the records show. Botulinum toxin is the paralyzing poison that causes botulism. Having a vaccine to the toxin would be useful for anyone working with it, such as biological weapons researchers or soldiers who might be exposed to the deadly poison, Tucker said. The Informant Who Lived With the Hijackers By Michael Isikoff NEWSWEEK Week of September 16th. Issue NEWSWEEK has learned that one bureau informant had a close relationship with two hijackers. At first, FBI director Bob Mueller insisted there was nothing the bureau could have done to penetrate the 9-11 plot. That account has been modified over time--and now may change again. NEWSWEEK has learned that one of the bureau's informants had a close relationship with two of the hijackers: he was their roommate. The connection, just discovered by congressional investigators, has stunned some top counterterrorism officials and raised new concerns about the information-sharing among U.S. law-enforcement and intelligence agencies. The two hijackers, Khalid Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi, were hardly unknown to the intelligence community. The CIA was first alerted to them in January 2000, when the two Saudi nationals showed up at a Qaeda "summit" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. FBI officials have argued internally for months that if the CIA had more quickly passed along everything it knew about the two men, the bureau could have hunted them down more aggressively. But both agencies can share in the blame. Upon leaving Malaysia, Almihdhar and Alhazmi went to San Diego, where they took flight-school lessons. In September 2000, the two moved into the home of a Muslim man who had befriended them at the local Islamic Center. The landlord regularly prayed with them and even helped one open a bank account. He was also, sources tell NEWSWEEK, a "tested" undercover "asset" who had been working closely with the FBI office in San Diego on terrorism cases related to Hamas. A senior law-enforcement official told NEWSWEEK the informant never provided the bureau with the names of his two houseguests from Saudi Arabia. Nor does the FBI have any reason to believe the informant was concealing their identities. (He could not be reached for comment.) But the FBI concedes that a San Diego case agent appears to have been at least aware that Saudi visitors were renting rooms in the informant's house. (On one occasion, a source says, the case agent called up the informant and was told he couldn't talk because "Khalid"--a reference to Almihdhar--was in the room.) I. C. Smith, a former top FBI counterintelligence official, says the case agent should have been keeping closer tabs on who his informant was fraternizing with--if only to seek out the houseguests as possible informants. "They should have been asking, 'Who are these guys? What are they doing here?' This strikes me as a lack of investigative curiosity." About six weeks after moving into the house, Almihdhar left town, explaining to the landlord he was heading back to Saudi Arabia to see his daughter. Alhazmi moved out at the end of 2000. In the meantime, the CIA was gathering more information about just how potentially dangerous both men were. A few months after the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, CIA analysts discovered --in their Malaysia file that one of the chief suspects in the Cole attack-- Tawfiq bin Attash--was present at the "summit" and had been photographed with Almihdhar and Alhazmi. But it wasn't until Aug. 23, 2001, that the CIA sent out an urgent cable to U.S. border and law-enforcement agencies identifying the two men as "possible" terrorists. By then it was too late. The bureau did not realize the San Diego connection until a few days after 9-11, when the informant heard the names of the Pentagon hijackers and called his case agent. "I know those guys," the informant purportedly said, referring to Almihdhar and Alhazmi. "They were my roommates." But the belated discovery has unsettled some members of the joint House and Senate intelligence committees investigating the 9-11 attacks. The panel is tentatively due to begin public hearings as early as Sept. 18, racing to its end-of-the-year deadline. But some members are now worried that they won't get to the bottom of what really happened by then. Support for legislation creating a special blue-ribbon investigative panel, similar to probes conducted after Pearl Harbor and the Kennedy assassination, is increasing. We are further asked to believe that the Allies, who had a large network of informers all over Europe and a spy in the German leadership (Admiral Canaris, the head of the German intelligence), did not become aware of this gigantic genocide until the end of the war, for if they had known about the mass murder, they would have acted to stop it. Finally, we are asked to believe that the Jews in Poland, the epicentre of the holocaust, did not know anything about the Auschwitz gas chambers as late as in August 1944, otherwise the Jews from the Lodz ghetto would not have gone to Auschwitz voluntarily - which is precisely what they did, as related by Raul Hilberg in his standard work about the holocaust (Die Vernichtung der europaeischen Juden, p. 543/544). And the Jews are gradually transforming the holocaust into a religion. This is a very clever strategy, for as Robert Faurisson aptly remarks, one cannot refute a religion with scientific arguments. Thus, the holocaust museums and holocaust monuments spreading like mushrooms all over America and Europe are really temples of the new religion, whereas professional "holocaust survivors" such as Elie Wiesel are the priests of the new religion. To prove this assertion, we only have to quote Wiesel himself: "The Holocaust is a holy mystery, the secret of which is limited to the circle of the priesthood of survivors" (Peter Novick, The Holocaust in American Life, 1999, p. 211, 212, retranslated from the German). Another high priest of the holocaust cult, Simon Wiesenthal, goes even further: "When each of us comes before the Six Million, we will be asked what we did with our lives... No critical questions about the holocaust are allowed because they are a blasphemy: They cause immense distress to the eternal victims of persecution, the Jews, and are an attempt to whitewash National Socialism - the most evil ideology of all times which made the holocaust possible! In today's Germany, it is even considered inadmissible to compare the holocaust with the atrocities of communist tyrants such as Stalin or Cambodian dictator Pol Pot because this is regarded as a "relativisation" and "trivialization" of the worst crime in history. French Zionist propagandist Claude Lanzmann, the producer of a long and unspeakably dull film about the holocaust (the title of this film is Shoa, the Hebrew word for "catastrophe", which is often used by Jews as a synonym for "holocaust") makes no effort to conceal that the holocaust cult is to replace Christianity: "If Auschwitz is something other than a horror of history, then Christianity totters in its foundations. Christ is the Son of God, who went to the end of the humanely endurable, where he endured the cruellest suffering. (...) If Auschwitz is true, then there is a human suffering with which that of Christ simply cannot be compared. (...) In this case, Christ is false, and salvation will not come from him. (...) Nowadays, a large percentage of the Jews do not believe in God any more, but virtually all of them believe in the Six Million. The Zionist leadership cunningly exploits the holocaust to unite the World's Jews by keeping them in a constant state of hysteria and persecution mania, insinuating that only if the Jews stick together will they be able to ban the threat of a new holocaust.It goes without saying that very few Non-Jews are willing to embrace the murky holocaust religion. While the overwhelming majority of people in the West still believe that the official holocaust version is essentially true (even if they suspect that the figures might me somewhat inflated), they are thoroughly fed up with the eternal lamentation about Jewish victims and Jewish suffering. They simply don't want to hear it any more. In Germany, opinion polls showed that a vast majority of the population was against the planned holocaust monument in Berlin (which not a single major party, not a single leading politician and not a single big newspaper dared to oppose). Privately, the politicians are probably as profoundly disgusted with the endless holocaust litany as the rest of the population, but they cannot possibly afford to let the revisionists win because this would shatter the very foundations of the "democratic" system to which they own their careers and their wealth. The function of the holocaust in the world since 1945 The political consequences of the holocaust since 1945 have been tremendous. When I speak about the "holocaust", I do not mean a historical fact, as the extermination of the Jews in chemical slaughterhouses did not actually take place. But in the mind of the populace, this extermination is as real as the Second World War or the Egyptian pyramids, while real genocides, such as the artificially provoked Ukrainian famine in which several million people were deliberately starved to death by the Communists in 1932/1933, are all but forgotten. Let us have a close look at these consequences:- The creation of the state of Israel - "Without the Holocaust, there would be no Jewish state." This candid statement was made by a Jew, Robert Goldman (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 19 December 1997, p. 9). Goldman was right. Without the holocaust, the world would never have permitted the founding of a Jewish state in Palestine three years after the war. The colonial era was coming to an end at this time. The British had already decided to give India her independence, while dozens of Asian and African territories were striving to shake off the rule of the White Man. While other powers were rushing to grant independence to their colonies, the Jews in Palestine were allowed to embark on a colonial adventure par excellence, with the blessing of both the West and the Soviet Union. In order to ensure that their state would have a Jewish majority, the Zionists proceeded with ruthless brutality; whole villages were levelled, thousands of Arabs were murdered (Deir Yassein was but one of many massacres), and a great proportion of the Palestinians were expelled from the land of their ancestors. The ones who remained behind have been subject to severe repression ever since. According to the very pro-Zionist Swiss weekly Die Weltwoche (22 October 1992), no less than 15.000 Plestinian political prisoners were languishing in Israeli jails in 1992, and the use of torture was officially sanctioned by the Israeli supreme court in November 1996. As I am writing these lines, Israeli soldiers are shooting unarmed Palestinian demonstrators, many of whom are children, every day. Jewish terror in occupied Palestine is not actually encouraged or approved by world opinion, but it is tolerated. After all, the Jewish people need a homeland to protect them from a new holocaust, and what are the sufferings of the Palestinians compared to those of the Jews under Hitler? Let us beware of illusions: As long as people in the West believe in the six million and the gas chambers, they will always support Israel in principle, even if they criticise the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians as being unnecessarily harsh. Without outside assistance, the Zionist parasite state would not be viable. Its chief source of revenue consists of financial injections from America, support from international Jewry and German reparations. According to official sources, the Federal Republic of Germany had paid 85,4 billion Deutschmarks by 1992 (Der Spiegel, 18/1992), but the real sum is much higher. In addition, there have been enormous deliveries in the form of commodities. Nahum Goldmann, long-time chairman of the Jewish World Congress, made no secret of this fact; he wrote: "Without the German reparations that started coming during its first ten years as a state, Israel would not have half of its present infrastructure. All the trains are German, and the same goes for electrical installations and a great deal of Israel's industry" (Nahum Goldmann, Das juedische Paradox, Europaeische Verlagsanstalt, 1978, p. 171). In 1999, Germany provided Israel with ultra-modern submarines which can carry nuclear missiles. The Israelis did not have to pay a penny - the submarines were another token of German atonement for the holocaust! - Jewish Immunity of the Jews from criticism. Before 1945, criticism of Jews was legitimate. Today, that is no longer the case. Even the slightest criticism of Jewish power and Jewish arrogance - for example the heavy influence of the Jews in the mass media of the West, the staggeringly high number of Jews in the Clinton administration, or the impertinent behaviour of the Central Jewish Council in Germany - is immediately shouted down with screams about Auschwitz. The effectiveness of this intimidation is demonstrated by the following fact: The most obnoxious criminal organisation in the world is regularly referred to as the "Russian Mafia" although virtually all bosses are Jewish, often with Israeli passports. This is irrefutably demonstrated by Juergen Roth in his documentation Die Russen-Mafia (Rasch und Roehring, Hamburg 1996). The title of the book translates as "The Russian Mafia", for if it were "The Jewish Mafia", the author would have gone to a German jail, and his book would have been burnt. In today's Russia, five or six out of the seven big "oligarchs" who made their fabulous fortunes with money stolen from the Russian people are Jews. This is never mentioned in the Western media. - Creating contempt for the German nation. Since 1945, the German people have been branded with a mark of shame. Self-contempt and self-hatred is the prevailing trend, while self-respect and patriotism are held in contempt. After the 1991 war against Iraq, George Bush senior, who was then president of the USA, publicly spoke of a "New World Order" which he did not care to define. As a matter of fact, the "New World Order" means that America, as the undisputed superpower, can impose its policy and its dubious values on all other countries. And America is nowadays largely ruled by the Jews. (Even if Jewish influence is much less pervasive in the Republicanparty than in the Democratic one, the Jews still own virtually every major newspaper and most of the television chains so that no Republican president can afford to govern against them. On August 15, 1994, journalist Patrick Bahners, commenting on the trial of revisionist Guenter Deckert who was sent to prison for "holocaust denial", wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: "If Deckert's attitude on the holocaust were correct, the Federal Republic of Germany would be based on a lie. Every presidential speech, every minute of silence, every history book would be a lie. Some German opinion makers now openly declare that the Holocaust is the foundation of the post-war German state. This is shown by a quotation from the influential newspaper Die Welt (28 April 1994): "Whoever denies the truth about the National socialist extermination camps relinquishes the foundations upon which the Federal Republic of Germany was built." But also in other Western countries, the belief in the so-called "democratic system" would be profoundly shaken as people would ask themselves why this charade had to be propped up with censorship and naked terror for decades. While the consequences of a public exposure of the holocaust as a fraud would be most serious for the Western system as a whole, they would be catastrophic beyond repair for international Jewry and the State of Israel. There would be a world-wide wave of anti-Jewish feeling, and no non-Jew would be willing to support the Zionist parasite state any more. German reparations would stop overnight, and the USA would have to reduce its financial aid to Israel so drastically that it would be bankrupt after no more than a year. The Jews in Israel would be utterly demoralised, as they would instinctively understand that a state founded upon such a colossal fraud has no moral right to exist. Since the holocaust religion, which unites Jews all over the world, would collapse, international Jewish solidarity would be a thing of the past. And the anger of the Palestinians would assume gigantic dimensions as they would understand that they had their country stolen and their sons shot in the name of a lie. The ultimate weapon against Zionism and the state of Israel At the end of the year 2000, Israel is a besieged country, but from the military point of view, it is still vastly superior to its neighbours, and it enjoys the unconditional support of the United States. Should any of the Islamic states grow strong enough to seriously threaten Israel, it would most probably be attacked and militarily annihilated by America. Russia is not likely to risk a confrontation with the USA for the sake of the Palestinians. We can certainly admire the bravery of the Palestinians resistance fighters who are willing to sacrifice their lives to liberate their homeland from the alien intruders, but realistically, they have no chance to win. The Palestinians have stones and slings. The Israelis have helicopters and tanks. You can't destroy helicopters and tanks with stones and slings. When fighting one's enemy, one should always look for his weakest spot. The weakest spot of Israel, its Achilles heel, is the holocaust lie to which it owes its existence. The revisionists can give the adversaries of Israel and international Zionism a terrible weapon. It is quite true that many revisionists are by no means guided by political considerations. Some of them - Carlo Mattogno is a good example - are only motivated by intellectual curiosity: They want to ascertain what really happened to the Jews during the Second World War. But even if revisionism is not a political movement, its political implications are tremendous. The revisionists are endeavouring to find out the truth, and truth is the deadliest enemy of Israel and international Jewry. Thus, the revisionists objectively work against Israel and Zionism, even if subjectively their goals are often purely scientific and devoid of any political ambition. This is, of course, the reason why they are persecuted and their books burnt in more and more countries. In view of the total Jewish media control and the ever-growing anti-revisionist repression in many Western countries, it is very difficult indeed to achieve a revisionist breakthrough. We revisionists are facing an uphill struggle which can only partly be explained by our total lack of financial resources. Fortunately the internet, which the Jews are unable to censure, has greatly improved our possibilities to make the results of our research known to the World, but all the same, we should not cherish naive illusions: Not every citizen of the Western world who is informed about the revisionist arguments will automatically become revisionist and anti-Zionist. The average person in the West - and particularly in Germany - has been so thoroughly brainwashed that a sudden exposure to the truth can provoke a nervous breakdown or stomach cramps. I have repeatedly witnessed this myself. Other people would gladly accept the truth about the holocaust, but as they know that even the slightest suspicion of revisionism leads to social ostracism, economic ruin and legal persecution, they understandably prefer not to get involved. However, if we want to win the war against those whom one of my Russian friends called "the enemies of God and mankind", we have no choice but to destroy the Big Lie, lest the Big Lie destroy us. The logical consequence of all this is that those countries which are authentically anti-Zionist and real friends of the oppressed Palestinian people should make the breakthrough of holocaust revisionism their foremost priority. An American Jew's Open Letter to Hanan Ashwari: Is Mideast Peace Still Possible? By Bernard Weiner t r u t h o u t | Open Letter Dear Hanan Ashwari: I am writing to you, because of all the Palestinian leaders familiar to me and a good many other Americans, you appear to be a determined, intelligent, realistic spokeswoman for your cause, the kind of leader with whom one could have a fruitful discussion about how to extricate the Palestinian people, and the Israeli people, from the vortex of violence that so dominates their lives. For a while, you were an official representative for the Palestinian Authority and Chairman Arafat. Then, I seem to recall, you began mentioning the corruption within the PA and found yourself somewhat on the fringes. I admired you for your hard-as-nails dedication to the best interests of your people, and your willingness to speak truth to power. And, most importantly, your willingness to at least listen to the other side. You clearly have a heart, one that complements your razor-sharp mind. I write you as an American who long has supported the call for Palestinian rights. I don't pretend to have the answers, but I do know that those in residency in the White House are not even asking the right questions, and, as a result, are contributing to the continued bloodshed and chaos in the Middle East. Of course, you, living there, experience the pain daily. But please know that those of us thousands of miles away, especially many of us American Jews, experience our own kind of pain when we see Palestinians brutalized and slaughtered, and when we see average Israeli citizens lying in pieces on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem streets. Like you, we want to help bring about a settlement, but the situation seems so intractable, so colored by decades of hatred and vicious cycles of revenge, that we don't know quite what to do. We write our manifestos and publish our ads in the major newspapers, full of signatures of peace-seeking academics and so on, but nothing seems to change. (On the other hand, we realize that if the beginnings of peace can come to Northern Ireland -- after centuries of hostility and killing between warring religious populations -- then maybe there can be hope for the Middle East as well.) This is an "open letter," which usually means nothing will come of it other than releasing some passionate opinions, but I'm hoping that somehow, some way, the contents of this missive might actually find their way to you, and a dialogue of hope might get started at the grassroots between American Jews and Palestinians. If the "leaders" can't, or won't, find the road to peace on the major freeways, then maybe you and your colleagues and influential American Jews can locate it on the byways. I'll be happy to help in this bridge-building. I'll tell you how I see the situation, along with whatever possible solutions I can envisage, and then (assuming you get this letter and choose to respond, c/o this website) you can supply your interpretations and possible solutions. I'm guessing that though there may be major things about which we differ, there may well be important areas of agreement that can serve as the foundation and building blocks for a viable peace settlement that the "leaders" will feel obliged to explore. So, here goes: At this point, I don't care who is more right and who is more wrong, or which party has more historical justification on its side. Spending time on these issues may make everyone feel good -- denouncing the viciousness of The Other, settling into victimhood -- and, of course, these are important issues to ruminate on. But right now, devoting so much time and energy to which side is more right and which is more wrong just bogs down the Middle East parties into an endless loop of violence, revenge, violence. So, what might be useful is for both parties to stipulate in advance that the question of historical justification is off-the-table; of course, that issue will be hovering in the air, but harping on such talk will not be helpful in moving both sides toward a just peace. If this can be done, perhaps the parties then can move on to a realization that no matter how much violence is employed, the other side is not going to go away. Israel will remain a powerhouse Middle East country; it will not disappear, no matter how many suicide bombers continue to practice their politics-by-nails, no matter how many Arab allies the Palestinians can round up. The Palestinian people, and their desire for a viable state, will not go away; the Palestinians will not disappear, no matter how much brutality and oppression is visited upon them, no matter how much they are vilified and humiliated by Israeli governments. If each side can accept that the other side is not going to magically disappear, then, it seems to me, both parties will come face to face with the most important recognition about The Other: "As long as you're going to be here, you need a viable, secure state; you need to be able to guarantee to your peoples that a treaty will benefit them in terms of peace, security, jobs, stability, economic growth, community development, etc. etc. All this will benefit my people and nation-state." Israel needs to know that it will not be attacked for merely existing as a mainly Jewish state surrounded by a sea of Arab states. Israel needs to know that if it pulls out of its settlements on land already promised to the Palestinians, attacks by Palestinian extremists will cease. (Vital question: Is this even possible? Would Hamas and the other groups devoted to violence be willing to accept the continued existence of the State of Israel next to the new, free, viable, secure Palestinian state? This answer has to be clearly laid out.) The Palestinians need to know that at last they will have a state on the West Bank/Gaza that is geographically and economically viable, without all the Israeli settlements and police/army presence that accompanies such settlements in the midst of their land. The Occupation will end. Treaties will be drawn up that speak to important issues of water-sharing and job-creation, passage back and forth into Israel for employment and to visit relatives, etc. Then to the thorny issues of "the right of return" and Jerusalem. Israel's position, along with the Saudi/Arab League plan, speaks to a certain number of Palestinian refugees who would be permitted to return to their ancestral lands; those of the majority not permitted to return (because to do so would forever alter the mainly-Jewish nature of Israel) would be monetarily compensated in a fair manner. As for Jerusalem, it seems evident that since three major religions claim it as their spiritual birthplace, it become some sort of shared, international city, perhaps supervised by a tripartite body or, more realistically, overseen by some kind of international agency. ***** Now, assuming that you and a majority of Palestinian leaders and citizenry could agree to the above as a starting point for discussions -- and it seems in recent years that both sides, at various times, have come close to these positions -- how would we get from here to there? As I've suggested, there is a minority-but-large peace movement both in Israel -- the land-for-peace advocates -- and in Palestinian-controlled areas. But they are stymied by the extremists in both countries, who effectively exercise a veto with their violence. Sharon clearly does not want any peace that envisions an equal, viable Palestinian state next to Israel, but an election conceivably could usher in a new, more amenable government in Israel -- though given the continuing attacks by extremist Palestinians, the hard-right Likud party of Sharon might well get re-elected -- but how to alter the attack-Israel sentiment among so many extremist elements in Palestine? I'm in a quandary. How to get the majority of the Israeli public once again thinking about propects for peace, when they are continually attacked? How to get extremist elements in Palestine to even consider propects for peace when they are under such tight Occupation and brutality and humiliation? Perhaps you have some cogent thoughts and suggestions on these issues. Of course, if the U.S. government became seriously involved as a mediator, things might improve. Conceivably, there could be a reliably-monitored cease-fire -- with an international armed force patrolling a buffer zone. But unless the attitudes alter inside each country, what would change on the ground? That's the conundrum. (Plus, Bush is not the least bit interested in becoming majorly involved in helping make the peace in the Middle East; instead, he seems content to let Sharon do whatever he wants.) If I had a magic wand, it would be easy enough. I'd wave it, there would be a total cease-fire, Israel immediately would end its Occupation, the Jewish settlers would leave Palestinian land, the Occupation would not exist as a reason for attacks on Israel, the extremists in both states would end their desire to see the other side destroyed, treaties would be drawn up that would settle the right-of-return and Jerusalem issues, joint Palestine-Israel institutions would be set up to deal with water-sharing, agricultural production, job-stimulation, cultural exchanges, etc. etc. That's the dream, Dr. Ashwari. Is it too late to hope something like that will come to realization in our lifetime? In my darker moments, I think it simply cannot happen, given the current level and ferocity of the hatred and suspicion and anger on both sides, and that it will take another generation of slaughtered children before new leaders arise and say: "Enough is enough, for the sake of our (and your) children and grandchildren, we are now ready to make the peace." Why can't it be now? Why do we have to wait another decade or two before the flowing of blood becomes too much for even the most die-hard extremists on both sides? Why can't they awaken now to their own, larger self-interests and make the peace that can be made today? I trust that something I've said here will strike you to reply, to get a dialogue going between moderate Palestinian leaders and influential American Jews that maybe, perhaps, could begin to move things off the violence track and into a more hopeful scenario for both Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs. The Pact was called the ‘Haavara’ Agreement. ‘Haavara in Hebrew means much like, ‘Moving house’. The Ha'avara Agreement, was an agreement between the Jews living in Germany and Germany specifically allowing Jews living in Germany, the privilege of taking their money with them, usually by a round about means, to Palestine. Hitler considered the Haavara Agreement to be a top priority for his administration and by November of 1933 it was in full swing and it kept functioning until at least 1942. The following Jewish banks were involved in the transfer of money: A.E. Wasserman in Berlin and Warburg &Co in Hamburg. Yes, the same Warburg, from her New York based office, which was involved in financing the Jewish revolution in Russia. The German Interior Ministry was made responsible for the logistics of the scheme, the Reichsbank and the German Treasury were responsible for financing the mass emigration. According to the Jewish Author Tom Segev, the Haavara Agreement saved the World Jewish Agency from bankruptcy. While Jewish students were being evicted from German schools the Jewish Agency set up schools in Germany for Jewish students. Jewish Teachers were bought to Germany from Palestine and everything was paid for by the Nazis. Not only were these Schools and teachers paid for by the Nazis but there was absolutely no interference from the Nazis as to the teaching curriculum. As well as Jewish Schools the Nazis set up Adult training programmes to prepare the Jewish youth for life in Palestine . The first Kibbutz farm was set up in Germany. The Jewish settlement in Palestine, was known to the Jews themselves as being Eretz Israel--the Jewish homeland (Eretz meaning greater Israel) -- and it was this nation, in the early 1930's by whatever name one cares to use, Jewish Palestine, or Eretz Israel, that desperately desired the financial assistance and Jewish immigration which were fundamentally assured by the Transfer Agreement. For the purposes expressed herein, the term, Eretz Israel, for want of a more generally recognised term, best describes the secretive Jewish nation dispersed amongst the nations of the Christian and Muslim Worlds, yet centred in Palestine, before the start of the Second World War. Most Jewish and stooge writers have not cared to describe the pre-Second World War Jewish people, as belonging to a secretive nation amongst the nations. Further, these same writers have been somewhat reluctant to publicise the secretive Transfer Agreement or it's ramifications. If a nation is composed of a people having a common loyalty, than there is no doubt that the nation of Eretz Israel had materialized prior to WW2. Many of the attributes including various political bodies, agencies, and international treaties normally used by independent states were present in Eretz Israel prior to the establishment of the Israeli State. A good example of such an agency was the establishment of the Mossad in the 1930's which right into the beginning of WW2 had offices in Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and London, which were funded by and reported to the Jewish Agency in Tel Aviv. (See the Kimchi Brothers book, the Secret Roads) The signing of the Transfer Agreement with Germany was a really big indication that in reality, Eretz Israel from 1933 onward, was acting like and was effectively being treated like an independent although secretive nation by a significant part of the West. It is the position of this author that just as that nation within and amongst the nations had power domestically in Eretz Israel, far greater than the popular conception. It is also this author's thought that various "host" nations to the Jews in the early 20th century, were considerably influenced, if not ruled by their Jewish "guests". HITLER AND THE JEWS Hitler recognised that the Jews held sway with the Western World. It is further my opinion, that Adolf Hitler wasn't nearly as anti-Jewish, in fact, as both his detractors and he himself tried to make others believe. Granted, Hitler, said a lot of nasty things about the Jews in Mein Kamf and otherwise. I suggest that inquiring readers look to the writings of Ernst Hanfstaengl, Hennecke Kardel, and Hans Frank for remaining vestiges of the truth, which have been so long suppressed. It appears to this writer that Hitler favourably treated many Jews and that he used extreme anti-Jewish rhetoric to curry favour domestically. Hitler was faced early in his Chancellorship in 1933, with either reaching an accommodation with the Jews or facing an early foreign intervention in Germany itself. It also became apparent that the Jews did have the power to successfully boycott German products internationally, if Germany didn't see to reason. See the Transfer Agreement, by Edwin Black, published by Macmillan Co., 1984, especially chapter 12, entitled, Fear of Preventive War and page 373. Germany, in 1933, was next to defenceless and Poland and Czechoslovkia, and perhaps other countries were prepared to pounce, if the Jews weren't satisfied. The accommodation reached with the Jews in August, 1933, was afterwards ratified by the next session of the World Zionist Congress, the 19th Congress, which was held in Lucerne, Switzerland, in late 1935. This accommodation or agreement, permitted the compensation of "German" Jews leaving for Palestine, by the indirect means of German product sales being deposited into special accounts. Pursuant to the granting of special recognition of Jewish nationality in the agreement, Germany passed it's Nuremberg laws, basically eliminating the Jew from German citizenship, within days after the 1935, 19th World Zionist Congress ratification of the Transfer Agreement, which had been signed in August, 1933. A German Zionist delegation, with Adolf Eichmann, as a guest observer, attended the 19th World Zionist Congress, in Lucerne. Edwin Black intimates on page 374 of his above described book that the Nineteenth World Zionist Congress ratification of the Transfer Agreement, in 1935 presaged the end for the Jews of Germany. Black, also opined in a manner of speaking, that after ratification, German Jews only had a place in Palestine. THE GESTAPO PAYS DAMAGES TO THE JEWS The Jewish Youth Organisation in Germany was called the ‘BETAR’, (aka. Bethar) they wore brown uniforms and the Nazis allowed them to hold Meetings, Seminars, Summer Camps, Sportsmeetings, Go Sailing , Go Tramping in the countryside and hand out Patriotic leaflets about Zionism. The Betar was the Jewish/ Zionist Version of the HJ (Hitler Jugend). One day a small group of SS men attacked a Betar Summer Camp and the Camp Leader complained to the local Gestapo. A few days later the Gestapo called the Betar Camp Leader to inform him that the offending SS Men had been punished and would he (the Betar Camp Leader) please inform the Gestapo what would be an acceptable payment for damages. Sounds incredible doesn’t it, that the Gestapo punished the SS for damaging Jewish property, and then paying for the damage. WHAT DID ‘HAAVARA’ COST GERMANY? Dr Werner Feilchenfeld who was General Manager for the Haavara Trust from 1936 until 1942 gives the pure monetary costs at 139,6 Million Reichsmark and this did not include the mass of material and equipment also sent to Palestine , this material included Coal, Iron and Metal products and machines for Desalinating Sea water. From 1933 – 1941 around 100 Jewish settlements were built in West Galilea. Since the end of the war many Jews have called the Haavara Agreement a Pact with the Devil, but Nahum Goldman described the Agreement as being quote; ‘an indispensable factor in the creation of the state of Palestine.’ The Arabs however were so concerned, by the close co-operation between the Nazis and the Zionists that they became convinced that Hitler must be a Jew who was just trying to establish a Jewish State throughout the Middle East. Although his first tour was planned for five months, v Mildenstein stayed over 6 months. He became a welcome guest at many Kibbutz Farms. His PRO-Zionist report, later printed in the Reichspropaganda Ministry Official magazine ‘ANGRIFF’ with the title ‘A Nazi travels to Palestine’ (Ein Nazi fährt nach Palästina ‘) was so filled with praise and compliments about the work being done by the German Jewish settlers in Palestine that Goebbels had a special coin minted in honour of the Co-operation. The coin had a Star of David on one side and a Swastika on the other side. In recognition of this coin, Palestines largest fruit growing firm decorated its Placard Advertising signs for Jaffa Oranges, with a huge portrait of King David flanked by Swastika flags. ZIONISTS THANK GOEBBELS FOR THE ‘RACE LAWS’ OF 1935 In 1935 Germany introduced strict race laws, regulating who was considered to be a German and who not. Instead of being upset by these laws, the head of the German Jewish Community and Head of Germany’s Zionist Movement Mr Georg Kareski gave an interview to the SS magazine ‘ANGRIFF’ printed on the 23 December 1935 in which he said he had been trying for years to find a method to keep the two races (Germans & Jews) separate, and he considered the race laws from the 15th Sept 1935 supported the Jewish desires. The Jews had been struggling against assimilation for nearly 2000 years and they needed such laws to support them in their struggle. RAMIFICATIONS OF TRANSFER AGREEMENT Effectively, the Transfer Agreement was an acknowledgement to the right of "German" Jews to "return" to Palestine and to take their money with them. Whether formally part of the secretive agreement or not, the concomitant right of the German government to define German nationality by it's own lights would have to be logically inferred as agreed too, by the nation which accepted the principles of Encouraged and Privileged Emigration of it's nationals then resident in Germany. The preferences accorded to the Jews were not minor. Long before Hitler became the Chancellor, Germany had found itself critically short of foreign exchange. To prevent national insolvency, the German Government of Chancellor Brüning radically regulated the amount of money people could take out of Germany for any reason, including immigration to another country. Germans of any religion, were only permitted to take with them the equivalent of just a few dollars upon leaving the country. These rules continued being in effect under Hitler--only they were radically changed to favour Jews after the implementation of the Transfer Agreement. The Transfer Agreement, was in a manner of speaking, wildly successful. It has been estimated that two thirds of the Jewish population of the Greater Reich had departed the country by 1940. Without the Transfer Agreement, had WW2 proceeded as it did, then the numbers of Jews killed by air terror attacks in German cities would have been dramatically increased. Edwin Black, author of The Transfer Agreement, mentioned above, who claims to be Jewish, attributed to the Transfer agreement--the successful establishment of the modern State of Israel. See page 380 of his book. Black estimated that 60,000 German Jews directly or indirectly immigrated to Palestine from 1933 to 1941 using the provisions of the Transfer Agreement. See page 379 of his book. Personally, I believe his estimate is far to modest, just as I believe his estimate of the total value of the money transferred to Palestine per the Agreement, was too modest. Black seems to think that over a $100 million was transferred by the Transfer Agreement and related agreements. See page 379 of said book. Whatever, the true financial ramifications were, certainly, the Transfer Agreement provided a great impetus for encouraging Jews to leave Germany. THE END OF THE LOVE AFFAIR Dr Feilchenfeld managed to get six further European countries to sign up to the Haavara Agreement but Gestapo Reports from 16th January 1937 reveal there was an enormous amount of growing opposition to the Haavara Agreement coming from powerful Jewish circles in the USA who were concerned that their own sphere of influence was dwindling with every Jew that emigrated or was deported from Europe. In other words American Jewish Power in Europe was dependant on having as many Jews in Europe as they could possibly have. As well as the American Jews, not all Jews were Zionists and many of these had been doing well financially living in Europe and didn’t want to leave. Many of these Jews were extremely rich and powerful and they had started to use their influence to sabotage the Haavara Agreement. They set up armed resistance and agitator groups to fight against Hitlers idea. They also spread fabricated ‘atrocity’ propaganda about how badly Jews were being treated in Germany. This propaganda was designed to swing world opinion against Hitlers Haavara Pact. From 1936 many thousands of German / Jewish men actually went to Spain to fight for the Bolsheviks against Gen Franco and found themselves facing members of Germany’s Condor Legion…the first time Germans and Jews had been in direct armed conflict. Another source of resistance was coming from Hitler himself who was also having second thoughts about setting up a Jewish Nation State. He realised that by helping setup a Jewish Nation State, and sending thousands of Jews to that State, he was actually giving all those Jewish forces who were gathering themselves against him, Money, Manpower and a central gathering point. Although the Haavara Agreement continued right on into WW2, most of the Jews that were later allowed to leave Germany were not of military age. Hitler had already made other plans for the Jews, and they were to; a) Make young and healthy Jews work for their food and lodgings in factories and b) Resettle all other Jews in Western Russia south of Minsk until after the war finished. If Jewish audacity/swindle, Chuzpe, is right, then resistance must be a national duty. Knowing what we know to day there is ONE lesson to be learned from this story: Never make any agreement with any Jewish organisations or with any Jews. Attacks By Dana Priest - Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, August 24, 2002; Page A01 The FBI has intensified its probe of a classified intelligence leak, asking 17 senators to turn over phone records, appointment calendars and schedules that would reveal their possible contact with reporters. In an Aug. 7 memo passed to the senators through the Senate general counsel's office, the FBI asked all members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence to collect and turn over records from June 18 and 19, 2002. Those dates are the day of and the day after a classified hearing in which the director of the National Security Agency, Lt. Gen. Michael V. Hayden, spoke to lawmakers about two highly sensitive messages that hinted at an impending action that the agency intercepted on the eve of Sept. 11 but did not translate until Sept. 12. The request suggests that the FBI is now focusing on the handful of senior senators who are members of a Senate-House panel investigating Sept. 11 and attend most classified meetings and read all the most sensitive intelligence agency communications. A similar request did not go to House intelligence committee members. The request also represents a much more intrusive probe of lawmakers' activities, and comes at a time when some legal experts and members of Congress are already disgruntled that an executive branch agency, such as the FBI -- headed by a political appointee -- is probing the actions of legislators whose job it is to oversee FBI and intelligence agencies. The FBI declined to comment. Most senators are away for the August recess, but Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.), who heads the Senate intelligence committee, said through a spokesman that he is cooperating with the investigation and has asked staff members to gather the requested records. In recent weeks, FBI agents finished questioning nearly 100 people, including all 37 members of separate House and Senate intelligence committees and some 60 staff members. At the conclusion of their interviews with members and staff, FBI agents typically asked them if they would be willing to take polygraph tests. Most declined. Requesting calendars, phone logs and schedules over a two-day period "has much more of a fishing-around feel to it, trying to find out which senators are talking to the media," said Charles Tiefer, a University of Baltimore law professor and former House deputy general counsel. "That might frighten senators out of the business of telling the public [through the media] what they need to know." Some officials generally involved in the probe believe that quashing the release of information to the public about embarrassing or sensitive information related to the Sept. 11 attacks was exactly what the administration intended when it sent Vice President Cheney to chastise committee members for unauthorized leaks that end up in news reports. Others say that although references to the intercepts had been in print before, the specific words in messages, which might be code words, were never released. Those code words, U.S. intelligence officials said, could well have tipped off the individuals targeted and dried up a source of valuable information. On June 19, CNN reported the contents of two messages based on NSA intercepts. The Arabic-language messages said, "The match is about to begin," and "Tomorrow is zero hour." Other news outlets, including The Washington Post, also reported on the intercepts. The NSA, based at Fort Meade, is one of the government's most secretive intelligence agencies. Much of its information carries a higher classification than other sorts of intelligence. It is illegal to release classified information. For that reason alone, other legal experts knowledgeable about executive-legislative branch relations said that, in a case like this, "criminal matters trump everything else." Neither congressional historians nor legal experts could recall any situation in which the FBI was probing a leak of classified information in this way. The closest example cited is the 1972 Supreme Court case involving Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska), who read portions of the classified Pentagon Papers to reporters attending a Senate public works subcommittee hearing on June 29, 1971. The papers revealed secret war plans and the Joint Chiefs of Staff's opposition to any limits on bombing in North Vietnam and were classified, although some by then had been published in the press. Before he began the three-hour-long reading, Gravel stated: "I will not accept the notion that the president of the United States can manipulate the United States Senate into silence. It is my constitutional obligation to protect the security of the people by fostering the free flow of information absolutely essential to their democratic decision-making." He was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury, as was his aide, as part of an inquiry into the release of secret documents. Gravel challenged the inquiry as a violation of his congressional immunity. The high court found that the constitutional "speech or debate" clause providing immunity from arrest to legislators only applied in matters that were "an integral part of the deliberative process and communicative process" in considering legislative actions. The clause "does not privilege either senator or aide to violate an otherwise valid criminal law in preparing for or implementing legislative acts." If publishing the papers, it said, was a crime, "it was not entitled to immunity." Legal experts said that the privilege protected during speech and debate does not extend to leaking classified information used by legislators to deliberate over legislative matters.

Choron "The Battling Bastards of Bataan, No Mama, No Papa, No Uncle Sam, No aunts, no uncles, no cousins, no nieces, No pills, no planes, no artillery pieces, And nobody gives a damn!" lyrics by Frank Hewlett, 1942 Sixty years ago, this June, the last of the "Battling Bastards of Bataan" finally laid down their arms and surrendered to the Japanese invaders of the Philippean Islands. Their defense of the "rock" Corrigidor, is one of the genuine tributes to the courage and determination of the American fighting man, when he is faced with what appear to be insurmountable odds. Armed with weapons cast off from the First World War, starving and in rags… waiting for relief that was promised but never planned, they held out for almost four months… Guam was occupied by the Japanese in two days, and Wake Island was occupied in two weeks after heavy fighting by the US Naval and Marine forces. However, Wainright's Battling Bastards stalled the Japanese timetable for conquest, and bought the United States time… time paid for in blood and misery… for the rebuilding of a fleet and the building of an army. For twenty-seven days after Bataan fell, as food and munitions ran low, as water and hope dried up, they clung to the Rock with taloned will. Like Bataan, of which it was an extension, the tale of Corregidor inspired a nation. The doomed defense was a futile fight. Depending on a fleet that never came, the sick and starved defenders, illequipped and outnumbered, cost the invading Japanese army dearly in men and time. Those on Bataan had decimated land, air, and naval forces needed elsewhere, and those on Corregidor had smashed the Forth Division, in which Japan had relied for offensives in New Guinea and the Solomons. They had denied Homma the use of Manila Bay. From the Rock they had intercepted messages and provided valuable intelligence regarding Japanese advance in the Pacific by six months, protected Australia from attack, and enabled MacArthur to mount the offensive that would win eventual victory in the Pacific. When once their story was told, it rolled like an anthem through the land. The battlers on Bataan and the eagles on the Rock gave hope to an embattled America, and pride for her children to come. For theirs is the stuff of epics. It is such annals that impassion man's will to renew the covenant of his fathers, that his republic shall live in glory and in honor. Contrary to popular myth, General Jonathan Wainwright, and not Douglas MacArthur, was the "real" Hero of the Philippeans. Few who have ever seen it can forget the famous painting of Wainright, tall and gaunt, in profile, wearing his battered campaign hat, hand on hip, over the open flap of his holster... looking out over the ocean toward America, and the fleet that, he knew, wasn’t coming… He was the son of a cavalry officer. He was born in Walla Walla, Washington, on 2nd August 1883, and graduated from West Point, the United States Military Academy, in 1906 (25/78). He next joined the 1st Cavalry Regiment and was sent to the Philippean Islands in 1909, in aftermath of the Moro Rebellion. In 1918, Wainwright was promoted to Chief of Staff of the 82nd Infantry Division. Later he held the same position in the 3rd US Army. In 1936, Wainright took over command of the 34rd Cavalry, at Fort Meyer. Two years later he was promoted to brigadier general and in February 1940 was again sent to the Philippines to serve under General Douglas MacArthur. Wainwright was placed in command of the North Luzon Force. As everyone knows, the Japanese Air Force attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor on the 7th December 1941. Most modern readers do not realize that on the following day they carried out air strikes on the Philippines and destroyed half of MacArthur's air force. At the time, MacArthur was much criticized for this as he had been told to move his airforce after the raid on Hawaii the previous day. His belief that an attack on the Philippean Islands was "unlikely", proved to be the first of many tactical and strategic blunders on his part, which were later masked by a highly effective public relations campaign. At the same time, the Japanese Army also invaded the Philippines and they soon held the three air bases in northern Luzon. On 22nd December the Japanese 14th Army landed at Lingayen Gulf and quickly gained control of Manila from the inexperienced Filipino troops. Although only 57,000 Japanese soldiers were landed on Luzon, they had little difficulty capturing the island. General Douglas MacArthur now, rather than organizing a counter attack, using his, numerically, vastly superior forces, ordered a general retreat to Bataan peninsula. A series of Japanese assaults forced US defensive lines back and on 22nd February, 1942, MacArthur, who, in spite of overt requests to be: "left at his post", had, in all of his correspondences with his Commander in Chief, made himself look indispensable to the war effort in the Pacific, in the eyes of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was "ordered" to leave Bataan and go to Australia... many, who were present believe, exactly as he had planned it all along... It is interesting to note that MacArthur had a flotilla of patrol boats waiting at the docks for just such an "contingency", even though he officially denied ever "planning" to leave the Philippean Islands. Now, this is not to be demeaning to General MacArthur. It is perfectly understandable, on one hand, how he would understand the principal of "living to fight another day", and the necessity of abandoning an untenable position. There was never any doubt as to the eventual fall of the Philippeans. From the moment of the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was obvious to all that relief of the garrison was impossible, at least for the foreseeable future. It is also understandable from a political perspective, how Franklin Roosevelt, who has been demonstrated to have had advance knowledge of both the Pearl Harbor attack and the invasion of the Philippeans, would be reluctant to have the commander of U.S. forces to become a prisoner of war. Still, on the other hand, MacArthur was not particularly well thought of by those who were left behind, and questions concerning his motivation, character and even his patriotism were voiced in a song penned by some of the troops of Corrigidor… The author, of course, was at the time, and still remains, anomyous… "Doug out Doug MacArthur lies a shaking on the rock, With fifty feet of concrete to protect him from the shock; With patrol boats and his Press Corps waiting stately at the docks, While his troops go starving on". (sung to Glory, Glory Hallelujah melody) It must be pointed out that, even with the clear advantage that Japan had in technology, the combined U.S./Filipino forces outnumbered the enemy, were holding prepared defensive positions, and could, if properly led, have repelled the invasion. Japan did not have the resources to reinforce Hoimma to any extent, nor did they have the resources to launch a second invasion, should the first fail. Had the Phillipeans been held, even at an excessive casualty rate (which could not possibly have exceeded the numbers lost in the actual defense or in later Japanese captivity), the entire course of the Second World War in the Pacific would have changed. In any case, the damage was done... General Wainwright remained behind with just over 11,000 soldiers and managed to hold out, on the Bataan Peninsula, until the beginning of May 1942. Wainwright was captured and took part in what became known as the Bataan Death March. He was subsequently transported to Manchukuo (Manchuria), where he remained a prisoner until the end of the Second World War. Jonathan Wainwright was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and on 5th September 1945 was promoted to full general. He retired from active duty on 31st August 1947 and lived in San Antonio until his death on 2nd September 1953. To begin to understand the fall of Bataan and its aftermath, the Death March, one must know what led to its fall. When the Japanese invaded the Philippine Islands in December 1941, with their 14th Army consisting of two full divisions (16th and 18th), five anti-aircraft battalions, three engineering regiments, two tank regiments, and one battalion of medium artillery, led by Lt. General Masaharu Homma, they faced a defending force of ten Philippine Army divisions. Numerically speaking, the advantage belonged to the defenders. What appears to be an advantage, however, was in reality a disadvantage: one that hastened the fall of Bataan and one that contributed to thousands of deaths in O'Donnell's prison camp. At the end of the first week in December 1941, the Philippine forces consisted of 20,000 regulars and 100,000 totally raw reservists, most of whom were called to the colors within the three months preceding the war. The training of their artillerymen, so vital in any military action, did not take place until after the outbreak of hostilities. Many of these troops were illiterate and lacked the ability to communicate with each other. Enlisted men spoke their native dialect, depending on the area they were from; officers spoke English, Spanish, or the so-called national language, Tagalog. Unfortunately, Tagalog was spoken mainly in and around Manila, the country's capital. Weapons such as the British Enfield rifle of World War I were obsolete. Uniforms consisted of fiber helmets (men were never issued steel helmets), canvas shoes, short-sleeve shirts, and short pants, hardly suitable for the jungles of Bataan and their surprisingly cold nights. Now one must admit that troops such as these, for the most part, would be ineffective in confronting a modern army, with modern equipment. However, the sheer numbers involved, and the presence of decent leadership, unhampered by political motivation, would have, to a great extent, offset the disadvantages inherent in the use of "native troops". This disadvantage could have been further offset, had the United States taken advantage of, or had the forces present been forewarned and allowed to take advantage of the knowledge that an attack was imminent. Even untrained or semi-trained native levies, firing from fixed, reinforced defenses, in sufficient numbers, could easily have pushed Hoimma's forces back into the sea. The destruction of available air forces, which can only be seen as a deliberate act on the part of MacArthur, made a viable defense against the invasion all but impossible. Even considering the age and technology of aircraft available on the Phillipean Islands (there were no "modern" aircraft present, only "surplus" from the mid-thirties), air support, of any kind, supporting the defense of the beaches would have proven devastating to the Japanese. In addition to the Philippine Army, Bataan's forces consisted of 11,796 Americans and several regiments of Philippine Scouts who had been part of the United States Army in the Philippines for many years prior to the war. These were magnificent soldiers, well trained, loyal, and dedicated to the war effort. Led by American officers, they repeatedly distinguished themselves in their four months of combat. Adding to the number of military in Bataan were civilians who fled the advancing Japanese. They entered Bataan of their own free will, yet they had to be fed from military supplies. Forced to feed such a large number of military and civilians, food became an immediate and critical problem to the command. Tons of precious rice were left in the warehouses upon the withdrawal into Bataan and were destroyed by the Japanese. Americans accustomed to "stateside chow" found themselves (mid-January) on half-rations along with the Filipino soldiers. A month later, these rations were cut again (1,000 calories per day) and consisted of rice and fish, or what little meat could be found. Most of the meat came from the horses and mules of the 26th Cavalry, Philippine Scouts, or the Philippine beast of burden, the carabao, or water buffalo. Occasionally monkeys and snakes supplemented the diet. Malaria ran rampant in Bataan, one of the most heavily mosquito-infested areas in the world at that time. Medication to offset the effects of that disease began to disappear early in the campaign. On April 3, 1942, General Homma finally launched his long-awaited (by both Japanese high command and Americans) final push to crush the Philippines. He easily broke through the final line of resistance of the Fil-American troops on Bataan, but he did so, mainly because of the deplorable state of health of the defending forces facing him. On 3 April 1942 (Good Friday), after a lull in hostilities, Japan attacked Bataan with overwhelming artillery fire which resulted in the disintegration of the Fil-American front lines, and a collapse of organized resistance by the Fil-American forces in the II Corps area on the eastern side of Bataan. With his troops starving, and sick from various tropical diseases, Major General Edward P. King was forced to surrender all Bataan Fil-American forces on 9 April 1942, (73,000 troops) in order to save lives. The following announcement was made over the "Voice of Freedom" broadcasting from Corrigidor, a few days later… "Radio Broadcast - Voice of Freedom - Malinta Tunnel - Corregidor - April 9, 1942 "Bataan has fallen. The Philippine-American troops on this war-ravaged and bloodstained peninsula have laid down their arms. With heads bloody but unbowed, they have yielded to the superior force and numbers of the enemy. The world will long remember the epic struggle that Filipino and American soldiers put up in the jungle fastness and along the rugged coast of Bataan. They have stood up uncomplaining under the constant and grueling fire of the enemy for more that three months. Besieged on land and blockaded by sea, cut off from all sources of help in the Philippines and in America, the intrepid fighters have done all that human endurance could bear. For what sustained them through all these months of incessant battle was a force that was more than merely physical. It was the force of an unconquerable faith--something in the heart and soul that physical hardship and adversity could not destroy! It was the thought of native land and all that it holds most dear, the thought of freedom and dignity and pride in these most priceless of all our human prerogatives. The adversary, in the pride of his power and triumph, will credit our troops with nothing less than the courage and fortitude that his own troops have shown in battle. Our men have fought a brave and bitterly contested struggle. All the world will testify to the most superhuman endurance with which they stood up until the last in the face of overwhelming odds. But the decision had to come. Men fighting under the banner of unshakable faith are made of something more that flesh, but they are not made of impervious steel. The flesh must yield at last, endurance melts away, and the end of the battle must come. Bataan has fallen, but the spirit that made it stand--a beacon to all the liberty-loving peoples of the world--cannot fall!" The forces on the "rock"… Corrigidor… battled on… Corregidor an inland two miles from Bataan now faced the brunt of Japanese artillery and bombing. For another month Corregidor held out. On 5 May 1942, the Japanese invaded Corregidor. Lieutenant General Wainwright then sent his last radio message to President Roosevelt on 6 May 1942. Below is the text of General Jonathan Wainright’s last official communication with President Roosevelt: "For the President of the United States: It is with broken heart and head bowed in sadness, but not in shame, that I report to Your Excellency that I must go today to arrange terms for the surrender of the fortified islands of Manila Bay: Corregidor (Fort Mills), Caballo (Fort Hughes), El Fraile (Fort Drum), and Carabao (Fort Frank). With anti-aircraft fire control equipment and many guns destroyed, we are no longer able to prevent accurate aerial bombardment. With numerous batteries of the heaviest caliber employed on the shores of Bataan and Cavite out ranging our remaining guns, the enemy now brings devastating cross fire to bear on us. Most of my batteries, seacoast, anti-aircraft and field, have been put out of action by the enemy. I have ordered the others destroyed to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. In addition we are now overwhelmingly assaulted by Japanese troops on Corregidor. There is a limit of human endurance and that limit has long since been past. Without prospect of relief I feel it is my duty to my country and to my gallant troops to end this useless effusion of blood and human sacrifice. If you agree, Mr. President, please say to the nation that my troops and I have accomplished all that is humanly possible and that we have upheld the best traditions of the United States and its Army. May God bless and preserve you and guide you and the nation in the effort to ultimate victory. With profound regret and with continued pride in my gallant troops I go to meet the Japanese commander. Good-by Mr. President." Naturally, Roosevelt agreed. Some would say that it had been planned to play out this way from the beginning. America, after all, "needed" a war. The attack on Pearl Harbor had allowed it to begin. The fall of Bataan, and later of Corigador gave the country "martyrs", to reinforce their desire and drive to enter into a conflict which could have been either avoided completely or shortened extensively. In point of fact, Roosevelt had intended, from all apparent indications, for the United States to enter the European War far earlier than December, 1941. This became impossible due to the general sentiment of the American people, many of whom were openly in sympathy with Germany. The Japanese attack which Roosevelt and his administration made clear was a part of a "pact" between Germany and Japan, was the pretext that was needed. Undoubtedly, such an agreement existed. However, it was secondary to the true goal of the Roosevelt administration, which was, first of all, to end the ongoing depression with a false, wartime economy, secondly, to take the American public's eye off of a failing domestic policy, and lastly, to aid in the destruction of the enemies of the Jews, to whom Roosevelt was in debt, and by whom he was surrounded. All of this, however, is secondary to the topics at hand, which is how the defense of the Phillipeans failed, and why... and the results of the aftermath. However, General Homma refused to accept the surrender of Corregidor and the other fortified islands unless the terms included the surrender of all US forces in the Philippines. For about a month the survivors of Corregidor were held hostage until all organized resistance in the Philippines ended in June 1942; this was when all elements in the Visayan-Mindanao Force in the Southern Philippines under the command of Major General William F. Sharp surrendered. Food supplies stored on Corregidor often never found their way to the front lines of Bataan, being stolen by hungry rear area troops while the food was enroute in trucks. Hijacking became a common practice along the way. Here may be found the first difference between Bataan and Corregidor. Corregidor troops did not go hungry until their capture by the Japanese. Consequently, the men of Corregidor entered captivity in relatively good health and with very few cases of malaria on record. Such differences were to have a major impact on who was to survive the prison camps that were to follow. Comparing rosters of units serving on Bataan and Corregidor, it was determined that the chances of surviving imprisonment were two in three, if captured on Corregidor, and one in three if captured on Bataan, an obvious substantiation of the differences between the two groups at the time of their capture. On Corregidor, there were 15,000 American and Filipino troops, consisting of anti-aircraft and coastal defenses, along with the Fourth Marine Regiment, recently arrived from China (December 1941), less a detachment stationed on Bataan, as part of a Naval Battalion. Despite some writings to the contrary, again dealing in "legends," the 4th Marine Regiment did not participate in defense of Bataan. Their mission was beach defense on Corregidor. Approximately 43 Marines arrived in Camp O'Donnell after completing the Death March. Of the 11,796 American soldiers on Bataan on April 3,1942, about 1,500 remained wounded or sick in Bataan's two field hospitals after the surrender. Others, relatively few, made their way across the two miles of shark-infested waters to Corregidor, where they were assigned to beach defense. About 9,300 Americans reached Camp O'Donnell after completing the Death March. About 600-650 Americans died on the March. Of the 66,000 Filipino troops, Scouts, Constabulary and Philippine Army units, it can be said the approximately 2,500 of them remained in the hospitals of Bataan; about 1,700 of them escaped to Corregidor, and a small number of them remained on Bataan as work details for the Japanese after the surrender. Those captured on Bataan on or about April 9,1942, were in the general area of the town of Mariveles, at the southern tip of the Bataan peninsula. Large fields outside this town were used as staging areas for the thousands of captives, American and Filipino, gathered together. Mass confusion reigned in these areas and when darkness fell, it became impossible to recognize anyone. In a brief period of time buddies were soon separated and, in many cases, never to see one another again. It was not uncommon for two friends from the same unit to enter one of these fields, then not know of each other's survival for over 40 years. Each morning, groups of several hundred would be hustled out on Bataan's once concrete highway (National Road) leading north out of the peninsula and begin their exodus to prison camp. No design or plans for the group ever materialized. Each sunrise, shouting, shooting, bayoneting, by Japanese, would assemble anyone they could to make up the marching groups. As a result, individuals generally found themselves among perfect strangers, even if they were fellow Americans. Consequently, a "dog eat dog, every man for himself" attitude soon prevailed. Few helped one another on the March. Those belonging to the same military unit were fortunate, with their buddies helping when needed. During one group's march, volunteers were sought to carry a stretcher containing a colonel wounded in both legs and unable to walk. Four men offered to help. After hours of carrying the man in a scorching hot sun with no stops and no water, they asked for relief from other marchers. No one offered to pick up the stretcher. Soon, the original four bearers, put down the man and went off on their own. The colonel was last seen by the side of the road begging to be carried by anyone. After the first day of marching, without food or water, men began to drop out of column. Japanese guards would rush up, shouting commands in Japanese to get back in the group. When that approach failed, shots rang, out killing those who would not or could not rise. Many of those failing to obey the order to march were beheaded by sword wielding-Japanese guards, usually officers and non-coms. Such actions on the part of the Japanese brought many captives to their feet and they continued the march for awhile longer. As each day and night passed without water, the marchers began to break from their group to run to anything that resembled water. Most often they would hurl themselves into a water puddle alongside of the road and lap up, similar to a cat lapping milk from a saucer, the so-called water. The puddles were used by the carabao to coat themselves with mud as a protection against the huge flies constantly about them. Upon rising from the puddle, the water would assume a "clear" state. Needless to say, the water was not potable and drinking of it soon brought on cramps, diarrhea, and eventually dysentery caused by the numerous flies found in the puddle. Such acts continued for each day of the Death March, lasting from five to ten days, depending upon where one joined the March, and continued until the marchers reached the town of San Fernando, Pampamga, P.I., a distance for most marchers of over 100 kilometers. Upon reaching San Fernando, the prisoners were forced into 1918 model railroad boxcars (40X8) used in France during World War I. With over 100 men in each car, the Japanese then closed the doors on the prisoners. There was no room to sit down or fall down. Men died in the sweltering cars. Upon arriving in Capas, Tarlac, almost four hours later, the men detrained for Camp O'Donnell, another ten kilometer walk. Official figures estimate that between 44,000 and 50,000 of the Filipinos arrived at O'Donnell after completing the March. Between 12,000 and 18,000 of their number are unaccounted for. What happened to them is unknown, but a safe guess is that between 5,000 to 10,000 of them lost their lives on the Death March. The death toll for both Filipinos and Americans, however, did not cease upon reaching O'Donnell. Instead, during the first forty days of that camp's existence, more that 1,500 Americans were to die. At least 25,000 Filipinos died by July 1942 in the same camp. All these deaths were the direct result of malnutrition on Bataan, disease, and the atrocities committed by Japanese on the March. Shortly after the last of these prisoners entered O'Donnell (April 24,1942), Corregidor fell on May 6. Battered by constant shell fire from Bataan and aerial bombardment, with their supplies running out, Wainwright, successor to MacArthur as commanding officer of the United States forces in the Philippines, decided his situation was hopeless and surrendered Corregidor and the troops in the southern part of the Philippines. With the establishing of a beach head on Corregidor by the Japanese, he avoided a "bloodbath" that would have most certainly occurred had the Japanese fought their way from the beach to Malinta Tunnel, to where most of the defenders of the island had withdrawn. After two weeks of the famous Japanese "sun treatment" for prisoners, in the sun-baked areas of Corregidor, these troops were taken across Manila Bay to Manila and then by train to Prison camp Cabanatuan, Cabanatuan, P.I. The men were in that camp when Bataan survivors arrived from Camp O'Donnell in June 1942. The extremely high death rate in that camp prompted Japanese to make such a move, and thereby allowed the American medical personnel to treat the Filipino prisoners remaining behind until their release beginning in July 1942. The condition of the prisoners arriving in Cabanatuan was such as to shock their fellow Americans from Corregidor. In a short period of time, however, they, too, would feel the full effects of Japanese captivity. It was not, however, until June 1942 that the men of Bataan and Corregidor began to share a common experience. During the first nine months of Cabanatuan's existence, when the vast majority of the camp's 3,000 American deaths occurred, most of the deaths were men of Bataan, still suffering from the effects of Bataan, the Death March, and Camp O'Donnell. That the men of Corregidor were more fortuitous than their fellow Americans in avoiding starvation, pestilence, and atrocities up to this point is beyond question. After the surrender of the Fil-American forces on Bataan, the Japanese began to march the starving, sick, and wounded survivors to Camp O'Donnel over 100 miles away. This event has become known as the "Bataan Death March." Bataan survivors were robbed of personal effects, denied food and water, or received very little; soldiers that could not keep up with the pace were, bayoneted, shot, or beheaded. The number of soldiers beaten and/or executed by the Japanese ran into the thousands before the march was finally completed. The loss of the Philippines to Japanese was the largest single defeat of American Armed Forces in history. This loss was not the result of a lack efforts by our soldiers and sailors, but rather a lack of preparedness of the United States as a whole. The United States underestimated the Japanese, and we were not willing as a nation to keep our armed forces trained and ready to protect the interests of the United States and its people. The defense of the Philippines is not talked about or studied very much in today's society. Its lessons may go unlearned if we do not recall the sacrifices made by men and women whom we asked to defend us. These brave soldiers and sailors bought us time to prepare our defenses and take the offensive in the Pacific. Their stubborn sacrifices forced the Japanese to commit more forces than they originally planned to the conquest of the Philippines which denied them their use in making their drive of conquest south of the Philippines. Upon his release from a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp after over 3 years in captivity, and at the request of Army General Douglas MacArthur, Lieutenant General Jonathan M. Wainwright appeared at the surrender of the Japanese Empire to the Allies on the deck of the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. On his way back to the United States, he was promoted to General. A few days after arriving in the United States, General Wainwright was asked to visit the White House by President Truman, and in a ceremony held in the rose garden, General Jonathan M. Wainwright was presented the "Medal of Honor" for his actions while commanding the Northern Luzon Forces, I Corps on Bataan, and all United States Forces in the Philippines. During his time as Prisoner of War, General Wainwright expected to be court marshalled upon return to the United States, but instead he found a grateful nation who was proud to have him back. Unfortunately, the only thing anyone ever remembers about General Wainwright, is his role in the surrender of the Philippine Islands to the Japanese in 1942. If America had been properly prepared to fight and defend its territory, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the loss of Philippines might never have happened. With the fall of Philippines, over 70,000 (50,000 Filipino, 20,000 American) soldiers, sailors, and airmen became prisoners of Japanese, not to mention the civilian internees. At the end of World War II, nearly 37% of all POWs lost their lives as a result of the way the Japanese treated their captives. How many people remember the POWs and what they did for our country? Officially the United States Government presented each surviving POW the monetary sum of $1.00 a day for each day of captivity (approximately $1,000) above their normal pay and… unfortunately… not much more. It is interesting to note that in the surrender ceremonies, General Wainright is not wearing his sidearm, plus in every known photograph, refuses to look at MacArthur. In many cases, the look on the General's face is one of absolute disgust. One must question which presence he found to be more offensive, that of his "official" enemies and former captors, or that of his "commanding officer".
