1. The Killers' latest big single sings to my heart: Human I did my best to notice When the call came down the line Up to the platform of surrender I was brought, but I was kind And sometimes I get nervous When I see an open door Close your eyes, clear your heart Cut the cord Are we human or are we dancer? My sign is vital My hands are cold And I'm on my knees, looking for the answer Are we human or are we dancer? Pay my respects to grace and virtue Send my condolences to good Give my regards to soul and romance They always did the best they could And so long to devotion You taught me everything I know Wave goodbye, wish me well You've gotta let me go Are we human or are we dancer? My sign is vital My hands are cold And I'm on my knees, looking for the answer Are we human or are we dancer? Will your system be alright When you dream of home tonight There is no message we're receiving Let me know, is your heart still beating? Are we human or are we dancer? My sign is vital My hands are cold And I'm on my knees, looking for the answer You've gotta let me know Are we human or are we dancer? My sign is vital My hands are cold And I'm on my knees, looking for the answer Are we human or are we dancer?
  2. My birthday gift this year, last Monday was the following treasure which I would like to share with the Fellowship. Concluding the small book "Poetry of a Saint" which comprises the 5th collection of sermons of Srila Sridhara Maharaja Goswami we find: [...] Our aspiration should be for such a life. We can sincerely foster the idea to feel attraction to a life of such a plane where everything is of a musical character. This is the land of Vrndavan. This is the land where God is eternally engaged in a sweet play of love with all surrendered souls. Vrndavan is so friendly, so sweet, so near to us, and such a “well-wisher” of ours. We are quite at home there – sweet, sweet home. In our innate and innermost existence we are members of that plane. Now we have come out, and we have scattered our consciousness all over the surface. Cover, cover, cover – there are so many layers but they are all dry things. And the substance is within. Eliminating this bodily cover, the mental cover, the egoistic cover – I may enter into the land of Vrndavan – the land of love. Vrndavan resides within me , and there I can find my friends everywhere. They are my friends and relatives, and they will give me an all-too-pleasing experience – ecstasy. Sri Chaitanya came with this news for us . “Oh, you are a child of that soil; why do you suffer here, my children, my boys? Why do you suffer? You are a child of that soil, and you are suffering so much, coming in the desert? Your home is so resourceful, so sweet and you are running in the desert? What is this? Come! Leave this poisonous charm, this suicidal charm. “This so-called charm, maya-charm, misunderstanding charm – this is suicidal. Leave this apparent charm! This is poisonous – like a witch. The witch has charmed you here and made you spellbound. Come along with Me! I shall take you to your home which is so very sweet!” This should be the course of our life, our cherished goal. Srimad Bhagavatam tells us this. Home, sweet, sweet home. You are a child of that soil. In one word, that is the goal. Why is that the highest goal? That is your home! This one word, ‘home’, should be sufficient to attract you. You are wandering here in a foreign land, but there is your home. You will get home comfort there, and you will not be able to deny that. So, back to God, back to home, back to Godhead.

    The Depression

  5. A new approach to establishing vedic-tattva - the courts may decide this question: Monkey battle for 'person' status VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- In some ways, Hiasl is like any other Viennese: He indulges a weakness for pastry, likes to paint and enjoys chilling out by watching TV.But he doesn't care for coffee, and he isn't actually a person -- at least not yet. In a closely watched test case that could set a global legal precedent for granting basic rights to apes, Austrian animal rights advocates are waging an unusual court battle to get the 26-year-old male chimpanzee legally declared a "person." Hiasl's supporters argue that he needs that status to become a legal entity who can receive donations and get a guardian to look out for his interests. "Our main argument is that Hiasl is a person and has basic legal rights," said Eberhart Theuer, a lawyer leading the challenge on behalf of the Association Against Animal Factories, a Vienna animal rights group. "We mean the right to life, the right to not be tortured, the right to freedom under certain conditions," Theuer said. "We're not talking about the right to vote here." The campaign was launched earlier this year after the animal sanctuary where Hiasl (pronounced HEE-zul) and another chimp, Rosi, have lived for the past 25 years went bankrupt. Activists want to ensure the two apes don't wind up homeless if the shelter closes. Both have already suffered trauma: They were captured as babies in Sierra Leone in 1982 and smuggled in a crate to Austria for use in experiments at a pharmaceutical research laboratory. Customs officers intercepted the shipment and turned the chimps over to the shelter. Their food and veterinary bills run about 5,000 euros (US$6,800) a month. Donors have offered to help, but there's a catch: Under Austrian law, only a person can receive personal donations. "If we can get Hiasl declared a person, he would have the right to own property. Then, if people wanted to donate something to him, he'd have the right to receive it," said Theuer, who has vowed if necessary to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France. Austria isn't the only country where primate rights are being debated. Spain's parliament is considering a bill that would endorse the Great Ape Project, a Seattle-based international initiative to extend "fundamental moral and legal protections" to apes. If Hiasl gets a guardian, "it will be the first time the species barrier will have been crossed for legal 'personhood,"' said Jan Creamer, chief executive of Animal Defenders International, which is working to end the use of primates in research. Paula Stibbe, a Briton who teaches English in Vienna, petitioned a district court to be Hiasl's legal trustee. On April 24, Judge Barbara Bart rejected her request, ruling that Hiasl didn't meet the two key tests: He is neither mentally impaired nor in an emergency. Although Bart expressed concern that awarding Hiasl a guardian could create the impression that animals essentially enjoy the same legal status as humans, she didn't rule that he could never be considered a person. Martin Balluch, a scientist who heads the Association Against Animal Factories, since has asked a federal court for a ruling on the guardianship issue. "Chimps share 99.4 percent of their DNA with humans," he said. "OK, they're not homo sapiens. But they're obviously also not things -- the only other option the law provides." Not all Austrian animal rights activists back the legal challenge. Michael Antolini, president of the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said he thinks it's absurd. "I'm not about to make myself look like a fool" by getting involved, said Antolini, who worries that chimpanzees eventually could gain broader rights, such as copyright protections on their photographs. But Stibbe, who brings Hiasl sweets and yogurt and watches him draw, paint and clown around by dressing up in knee-high rubber Wellington boots, insists he deserves more legal rights "than bricks or apples or potatoes." "He can be very playful but also thoughtful," she said. "Being with him is like playing with someone who can't talk." A date for the appeal hasn't yet been set, but Hiasl's legal team already has lined up several expert witnesses. Theuer said they include Jane Goodall, the world's foremost observer of chimpanzee behavior, who revolutionized research on primates during the 1960s when she studied them at close range in Tanzania. "When you see Hiasl, he really comes across as a person," Theuer said. "He has a real personality. It strikes you immediately: This is an individual. You just have to look him in the eye to see that." http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/05/04/austria.chimp.ap/index.html

    Kali-Yuga is Here

From an early essay from Srila A.C Bhaktivedanta: The symptoms of Kali-yuga are vividly described in another chapter of BhAgavatam (Canto 12 Chapter 2) [s.B. 12.2.1]. It is said there that money will be the pivot of all activities in the Kali-yuga. It is money only which shall always and alone classify the different orders of society without any reference to the quality of birth or work and it is money only which will decide the propriety of one's claim in the matter of justice, freedom and equality. Personal attractiveness will decide the question of conjugal life between husband and wife and the process of cheating each other will be the crux of business transactions. Sexuality will be considered as the standard of men's or women's superiority and a mere piece of thread on the body will mark the sign of one's belonging in higher three orders of society. Simply by a change of garb i.e. from a white garment to the red and holding a rod as a mark of renunciation, will transfer anybody to the renounced order of life. One's inability to pay sufficiently will deprive one of receiving justice in the court and anyone who shall have the audacity to be an egoist, shall be considered as the most learned fellow. To become stricken with poverty will be considered as one's being dishonest and pride and vanity will be the standard of honesty. Marriage will be validated by mere acceptance of an agreement and the simple act of washing one's body will serve all purposes of dressing. Holy places of sacred water situated far off from one's home, will be considered as the place of pilgrimage; keeping long hairs on the head will be misunderstood as increasing the lustre of one's personal beauty. Self-realization will be identified with the mere filling of one's belly with foodstuff; truth will be realised by impertinence of behavior; ability will be measured by the process of maintaining one's family well, and religiosity will be practised for the sake of reputation. When the whole atmosphere will be surcharged with the abovementioned symptoms of Kali-yuga--whoever amongst the brAhmaNas, kSatriyas, vaizyas or zUdras will be powerful, shall capture the reins of government. Such governmental administrators will naturally be unkind, selfish, covetous and expert in exploiting poor citizens by plundering their money and women. In such conditions of life the citizens will fly from one place to another as displaced refugees and being overpowered by constant visits of famine, epidemic diseases and overburdened by state taxes, will begin to eat grass, roots, meats, seeds, honey and unknown fruits to the risk of life. Due to scarcity of rains in the field they will gradually disappear from the surface of the earth. The population in the Kali-yuga will be overtroubled by communal strife, hunger, thirst, diseases, winter, summer, rains and unparalleled anxiety for everything. The living bodies will gradually diminish in stature, the spiritual division of social orders such as four castes or four Azramas will be overcrowded only by the faithless unbelievers and they will lose all faith in the Vedic way of spiritual advancement. The infidel ruler will turn to one to become plunderer and the people in general will be infected unnecessarily with the habit of stealing, dishonesty, violence and similar rabid acts. There will remain no other caste except the zUdras, the cow being reduced to the stature of goat, the hermitages and monasteries being coverted into ordinary house, friendship being maintained only in relation with sexuality, medicinal herbs being impotent in efficacy like grass, big trees being shortened like the saplings, monsoon being devoid of rains and full of lightning and the general population being forced to labour like the ass, SrI KRSNa the Personality of Godhead will appear to reclaim the faithful and vanquish the faithless. The life of Kali-yuga is estimated to the extent of four lakhs and thirty-two thousands of years beginning from the time of King ParIkSit i.e. after the battle of KurukSetra. As such it will take long long years before the advent of Kalki AvatAra at the end of the Kali-yuga. But the symptoms of Kali-yuga are already in vogue and the state of affairs will gradually deteriorate from bad to worse as it is stated in the BhAgavata PurANa in the most unambiguous term. The affairs will degrade to such an extent that the people in general will look like the Satan of the first magnitude being perturbed by anxieties in respect of state taxes, want of sufficient fooding, clothing, drinking, sleeping, bathing and sexuality. Addicted to unrestricted sexual pleasures only and act of filling the belly with foodstuff not fit for human consumption, low minded debauches will not scruple even to refuse maintaining old father helpless children and wife married from respectable family. The people of Kali-yuga will not worship the Almighty Godhead who is worshiped even by BrahmA and Siva. Sukadeva GosvAmI the enlightened professor of BhAgavatam said to King ParIkSit that in spite of all the abovementioned deformities of the Kali-yuga, there is one most valuable source of transcendental realization in this age. The asset is that in the Kali-yuga one can transcend all the above troubles and reach to the supreme goal of life simply by chanting process of the transcendental holy name of KRSNa. That is a special prerogative chance for this age.
  12.
VyAsa-pUjA Offering to His Divine Grace SrIla BhaktisiddhAnta SarasvatI GosvAmI MahArAja, 1961 by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupAda.
VAISISTYASTAKAM First Vaisistya 1. On that day, in pain of separation., oh Lord, I was grief stricken, Unable to tolerate being apart from my spiritual master. 2. On today's auspicious occasion, to offer you worship, I have come With this offering, remembering your lotus feet. 3. MahAprabhu's principal conclusion is that renunciation is prime; Not only that, but it is to be distributed to everyone. 4. The neophytes have no ability to make any solution, But you are a mahA-bhAgavata and you have given us direction. 5. Bewildered by ignorance, what kind of renouncers can they be? They are simply false renouncers, giving up externally. 6. Real renunciation comes from transcendental feelings. Without such feelings, a renouncer is known simply as ‘show-bottle'. 7. But there is another show-bottle, with preaching as its purpose: The Lord's sannyAsa, which is the defeat of the impersonalists. 8. Lord Caitanya's teachings are beyond varNAzrama-dharma. They are BhAgavata-dharma and destroy all cheating processes of religion. 9. Performing dry renunciation, preaching will not be successful; ‘Yukta-vairagya' is the essence of all Caitanya philosophy. 10. "The sannyAsa I have given you" is for preaching in devotion. The atheistic sense enjoyers are bewildered in understanding. Second Vaisistya 11. The sannyAsIs go and stay in the mountain caves, But you, master, keep your sannyAsIs in marble mansions. 12. To see a sense enjoyer's face is just like drinking poison, But you, master, are giving your darzana here and far away in foreign lands. 13. Mlecchas and yavanas are not allowed to enter Hindu temples, But you, master, make them the chairman and sit them in the assembly. 14. To cross the ocean is not allowed for Hindus, But you send your devotees across the ocean. 15. In Kali-yuga's cities the guru's instructions are "forbidden". But you remain there anyway with your special purpose in mind. 16. The devotees want to go to some lonely place to perform their bhajan alone, But you don't accept this in your judgement. 17. Where there is an increase in the measurement of people, There your preaching work is to be seen. 18. You want to make a student hostel in London, and You explain it must be nicely arranged. 19. In the land of barbarians, a student hostel for preaching ‘Hari Katha'! Who can understand all these things? 20. To mitigate all these contradictory ideas is not the trifling Act of an inexpert and inexperienced person. Third Vaisistya 21. If everyone sat down together and carefully considered, Then what nice preaching there could be. 22. After all, that is Prabhupada's command--for all to join together To do this preaching work, merged in your instructions. 23. If you simply imitate, there will be the opposite result, For as long as you try like that, there will be failure. 24. Now all of you are returning here on his order to worship him on his VyAsa-pUjA day-- All together you are engaged in His worship. 25. But a festival of flowers and fruits is not the real worship: One who serves the guru's message really worships him. 26. The service of the message is the real transcendental vibration. Don't be falsely proud, brother; come back to that. 27. KalidAsa Nag, that Master Masay, One day said in the public assembly, 28. That Kali-yuga's mission was killing the whole world And Lord Caitanya's message is locked in a cage. 29. Oh shame! Brother, aren't you at all embarrassed Behaving like businessmen to increase your followers? 30. Our master has said to preach; Let the neophytes go in the temples to do nothing but ring bells. Fourth Vaisistya 31. All these are not our master's preaching methods; These are the things done by the caste goswamis. 32. But just take a look at the miserable condition that's arisen: Everyone has become a sense enjoyer and has abandoned preaching. 33. Now the temple doors also are starting to be locked. Go and preach this BhAgavata-dharma; don't delay any longer. 34. Within this Earth there is another Earth Whose sound is the unequalled penetrating force. 35. (There is a Bengali proverb) "The mullah runs just as far as the mosque" (and no further), But an end to this false preaching today! 36. Up to the borders of the seas, all over the earth., pierce the walls of the universe; All assembled together preach the transcendental vibration. 37. Then our master's worship will be in proper order. Today make your firm promise; give up your political play. 38. On this very day, coming together, make your comment; The five of you together, and decide what must be done. 39. You have become renouncers, my brothers, so renounce everything. But if you renounce the instruction of the spiritual master, what kind of renunciation is that? 40. One who renounces the bona-fide spiritual master, or one who tries to enjoy at the expense of his spiritual master, are both useless. First become the servant of your spiritual master, then you will be able to understand these conclusions. Fifth Vaisistya 41. Because there is only one God, if his wealth increases, A saintly person renounces all such material desires for profit, adoration and prestige. 42. Your gold, my brother, is the source of sense enjoyment. Prabhupada has made this meaningful statement. 43. Give up your riches for preaching: Sit down together and make some special consideration. 44. The Supreme Lord says Himself that, "Everything is Mine alone". 45. Prabhupada gave this final instruction. Take care: do this in all respects, completely. 46. Otherwise all your efforts will simply go to waste. Oh saintly ones, beware: afterwards you will repent. 47. Is it really such a difficult task to come together like this? And why does so much have to be said to you? 48. Give up your stubbornness, act for the welfare of others: There is no time to waste! All my brothers, come: this is the most auspicious time to unite. Sixth Vaisistya 49. When will it come to pass that in every room a temple will be established, In every corner of the world. 50. That the high court judge will be a GauDIya VaiSNava, tilaka displayed on his forehead, the glory of all; 51. That a VaiSNava winning votes will be the president of the land, And everywhere this preaching will be extended? 52. The demons loot and plunder the Lord's wealth, While the hapless populace cries, "Alas, alas!" 53. The demons make their plans to cheat the common people, Selling whole-wheat flower at 32 rupees a mound. 54. Opening so many factories, will they fill the people's bellies? Out of hunger, the people will be forced to eat grass and mango pits. 55. A two-paisa thread tied around his neck and a man says he is a brAhmaNa. Just wearing saffron cloth, and a man calls himself a sannyAsI. 56. The householders beg from the sannyAsIs, and the sannyAsIs Have crores of rupees in the bank. 57. Every day the influence of Kali-yuga increases, And the poor souls, being oppressed by the age of Kali, cry in agony. 58. Every day ten thousand cows are slaughtered, And the expert leaders eat untouchable foodstuffs. 59. Men of mudlike intelligence increase day by day, And a husband and wife can dissolve their relationship simply by a word. 60. Everyone has become a witch by the influence of the age. Everyone is unhappy due to the absence of the devotees' mercy. Seventh Vaisistya 61. The VaiSNavas are famous for being sympathetic towards others' suffering, And that fame will be increased by mature preaching. 62. If eternally pure devotional service to Krishna is awakened in every one, Kali will flee of his own accord, crying "Ha! Ha!" 63. MahAprabhu's message is praninam upakaraya Act for the welfare of others. This is the storehouse of happiness both now and after death. 64. So much work has fallen into your hands: Everyone should join together and do something about it. 65. VAsudeva-vipra paid his obeisances to the Lord and said, "Please deliver all the living beings." 66. "Give all their sins to me, who am most fallen, And relinquish all the suffering of the unhappy souls." 67. He was the best VaiSNava, para-duhkha-dukhi, He found no happiness in gratifying his senses. 68. What kind of compassion can the non-devotee show? He simply commits offences with his daridra-nArAyaNa philosophy. 69. The VaiSNava's mercy is scientific. Without the mercy of the Vaisnava, The world is simply insurmountable Maya. 70. If there were a kingdom of ViSNu and VaiSNavas on earth, Then everyone would be happy, say the saintly persons and sages. Eighth Vaisistya 71. Why do people cry for rAma-rAjya? The only cause of such a rAma-rAjya would be a God-centered kingdom. 72. KRSNa sat YudhiSThira on the King's throne And the whole world became full of wealth and fortune as a result of the good qualities of the VaiSNavas. 73. The rivers, streams, trees, fields and hills were all producing abundantly: And the cows were so full of milk that they floated in the abundance. 74. The birds, bcasts and animals were all free of envy: In the VaiSNava kingdom there is perfect saMsAra. 75. The whole world in ecstasy would sing the glories of Hari. Seeing this, the VaiSNavas' heart danced in ecstasy. 76. The use of things without a touch of kRSNa-bhakti Has filled the world with saMsAra. 77. What is more, everyone is searching for peace, Fulfill that desire by your preaching. 78. On this very day, VyAsa-pUjA, get down to business: By your preaching deliver the fallen jIvas. 79. Oh, SrIla PrabhupAda! Show compassion today: This time show real mercy, for you are beyond the illusion of this material world. 80. Whatever independence we have, let it be discarded. The most fallen "Abhay" makes this humble offering today.
  13.
Hare Krishna comes of age: the movement has matured into a mainstream religion after years of tumult and scandal—but escaping the past never is easy
"Coming back, he found ISKCON a vastly changed place. "When the movement had great wealth, it attracted a number of people who did not have fully spiritual motivations," he contends. "Now that the movement is poor--surviving, but poor. Those who have remained have remained because they truly believe; they truly practice; and they truly care." The recently discovered bridge currently named as Adam´s Bridge is made of chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long. The bridge´s unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man made. The legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge´s age is also almost equivalent. This information is a crucial aspect for an insight into the mysterious legend called Ramayana, which was supposed to have taken place in tredha yuga (more than 1,700,000 years ago). In this epic, there is a mentioning about a bridge, which was built between Rameshwaram (India) and Srilankan coast under the supervision of a dynamic and invincible figure called Rama who is supposed to be the incarnation of the supreme. This information may not be of much importance to the archeologists who are interested in exploring the origins of man, but it is sure to open the spiritual gates of the people of the world to have come to know an ancient history linked to the Indian mythology. Comment From Hugh Joseph (10-12-02) I read the story headlined above with great interest. This is a story of major significance, as understanding its implications will turn the entire world of Science and History on its head. This bridge, according to accounts in the Ramayana and the Srimad-Bhagavatam, was constructed in the age know as Treta, over 2 million years ago. How did the writers without super space-ranging satellites know about the existence of this bridge? In these ancient accounts, written over 5,000 years ago, we find discussions of, among other things, space travel, inter planetary travel, what we call UFOs and what we mistakenly call ETs. This is not only the History of the planet Earth, but also of this Universe, (a mediocre universe among many millions of universes.) Here one can also learn the real undisguised and uncontaminated truth about God. Our man-made religions are of little or no value when compared to the stunning and breathtaking revelations found in the pages of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Ramayan, Bhagavad-gita, etc. Here is the way the "Srimad Bhagavatam" describes the event: Text 22 nara-devatvam apannah sura-karya-cikirsaya samudra-nigrahadini cakre viryany atah param Translation: "In the eighteenth incarnation (of Lord Krishna), the Lord appeared as King Rama. In order to perform some pleasing work for the demigods, He exhibited superhuman powers by controlling the Indian Ocean and then killing the atheist King Ravana, who was on the other side of the sea". Purport (by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada) The Personality of Godhead Sri Rama assumed the form of a human being and appeared on the earth for the purpose of doing some pleasing work for the demigods, or the administrative personalities, to maintain the order of the universe. Sometimes great demons and atheists like Ravana and Hiranyakasipu and many others become very famous due to advancing material civilization by the help of material science and other activities, with a spirit of challenging the established order of the Lord. For example, the attempt to fly to other planets by material means is a challenge to the established order. The conditions of each and every planet are different, and different classes of human beings are accommodated there for particular purposes mentioned in the codes of the Lord. But, puffed up by tiny success in material advancement, sometimes the godless materialists challenge the existence of God. Ravana was one of them, and he wanted to deport ordinary men to the planet of Indra (heaven) by material means without consideration of the necessary qualifications. He wanted a staircase to be built up directly reaching the heavenly planet so that people might not be required to undergo the routine of pious work necessary to enter that planet. He also wanted to perform other acts against the established rule of the Lord. He even challenged the authority of Sri Rama, the Personality of Godhead, and kidnapped His wife, Sita. Of course Lord Rama came to chastise this atheist, answering the prayer and desire of the demigods. He therefore took up the challenge of Ravana, and the complete activity is the subject matter of the "Ramayana". Because Lord Ramachandra was the Personality of Godhead, He exhibited superhuman activities which no human being, including the materially advanced Ravana, could perform. Lord Ramacandra prepared a royal road on the Indian Ocean with stones that floated on the water. The modern scientists have done research in the area of weightlessness, but it is not possible to bring in weightlessness anywhere and everywhere. But because weightlessness is the creation of the Lord by which He can make the gigantic planets fly and float in the air, He made the stones even within this earth to be weightless and prepared a stone bridge on the sea without any supporting pillar. That is the display of the power of God. (Srimad-Bhagavatam First Canto, Chapter 3, text 24, 1972) Here's the account from the "Ramayana" of Sage Valmiki: "At Rama's command, those lions among the monkeys entered the mighty forest with alacrity in hundreds and thousands on every side and those leaders on the simian tribes, tearing up the rocks, which in size they resembled, and the trees also dragged them to the sea and they covered the ocean with Sala, Ashvararna, (list of tree names). Those foremost monkeys transported those trees, with or without roots, bearing them like so many standards of Indra (the king of heaven) and they heaped (list of tree names) here and there. With the aid of mechanical devices, those powerful colossi dug up stones as big as elephants and rocks, and the water suddenly spouted into the air only to fall instantly. Thereafter those monkeys churned up the sea by rushing into it on all sides pulling on the chains. "That immense causeway constructed by Nala in the bosom of the sea was built by the arms of those monkeys of formidable exploits and it extended over a hundred leagues. "Some brought trunks of trees and others set them up; it was by hundreds and thousands that those monkeys, like unto giants, made use of reeds, logs and blossoming trees to construct that bridge, rushing hither and thither with blocks of stone resembling mountains or the peaks of crags, which, flung into the sea, fell with a resounding crash. "The first day those monkeys resembling elephants, or immense energy, full of high spirits and exceedingly merry, erected fourteen leagues of masonry. The second day, those highly active monkeys of formidable stature set up twenty leagues. Bestirring themselves, those giants threw twenty-one leagues of structure over the ocean on the third day and on the fourth, working feverishly, they built up twenty-two leagues in extent. The fifth day, those monkeys, industrious workers, reached to twenty-three leagues distance from the further shore. "That fortunate and valiant son of Vishvakarma (architect of the demigods), leader of the monkeys, constructed a causeway worthy of his sire over the ocean and that bridge erected by Nala over the sea, the haunt of whales, dazzling in its perfection and splendor, was like the constellation of Svati in space. "Then the gods, Gandharvas, Siddhas (living beings superior to humans) and supreme Rishis (great sages) assembled in the sky, eager to see that masterpiece, and the gods and Gandharvas gazed on that causeway, so difficult of construction, that was ten leagues in width and a hundred in length built by Nala. "Those monkeys thereafter dived, swam and shouted at the sight of that unimaginable marvel that was almost inconceivable and caused one to tremble! And all beings beheld that causeway thrown over the ocean and by hundreds and thousands of kotis (millions), those monkeys, full of valor, having built that bridge over the immense repository of waters, reached the opposite shore. "Vast, well-constructed, magnificent with its wonderful paved floor, solidly cemented, that great causeway like unto a line traced on the waves, resembled the parting of a woman's hair. "Meanwhile Bibishana (brother of Ravana who joined Rama), mace (club) in hand, held himself ready at his post with his companions in case of an enemy attack. Thereafter Sugriva addressed Rama, who was valiant by nature, saying "Mount on the shoulders of Hanuman and Laxmana (brother of Rama) on those of Angada. O Hero, vast is this ocean, the abode of whales; those two monkeys who freely range the sky will transport you both." "Then the fortunate Rama and Laxmana advanced thus and that magnanimous archer was accompanied by Surgriva. Some monkeys strode forward in the center, some threw themselves into the waves, some sprang into the sky, others marched on the bridge, some ranged through space like birds, and the terrific tumult of the trampling of that formidable army of monkeys drowned the roar of the ocean. "When those simian troops had passed over the sea by the grace of Nala's causeway, the king ordered them to camp on the shore which abounded in roots, fruits and water. At the sight of that masterpiece that had materialized under the command of Raghava (another name of Lord Rama), despite the difficulties, the gods, who had drawn near with the Siddhas and Charanas as also the great Rishis, anointed Rama in secret there, with water form the sea, and said: "Mayest thou be victorious over thy foes, O Thou, who are a God among men! Do Thou rule over the earth and the sea eternally!" Thus in various auspicious words, did they acclaim Rama in the midst of the homage offered to him by the Brahmins." (The Ramayana of Valmiki, Yuddha Kanda) Comments welcome hughjoseph@aol.com Note: Lord Krsna's incarnation Rama, appeared as a human being because only a human being could kill Ravana, due to certain benedictions that he had been given. Note: The monkeys mentioned here as comprising Rama's army, were not ordinary monkeys. They were in fact greatly powerful demigods who appeared on this earth to assist the Lord in his pastime of subduing this atheistic demon, Ravana. Note: There are 4 ages, or yugas, rotating through time like the 4 seasons: Satya, 1,800,000 yeas long; Dvarapa, 1,200,000 years long, Treta, 800,000 years long and Kali, 432,000 years long. In this most recent yuga cycle, the Dvarapara and Treta yugas were reversed. This event took place about 2 million years ago.

Ram Sethu: Scientific evidence of ancient human activity Ram Sethu ( called Adam's Bridge by the British ) which is seen as one of Hinduism's holiest sites, is an ancient chain of shoals that once linked India's southern areas to Sri Lanka's northwest. It is being destroyed by the Sethu Samudram Shipping Canal Project (SCCP) to create a navigable waterway in the narrow sea dividing the two countries. By S. Kalyanaraman copyright© 2004 Bharat Prakashan(Delhi) Ltd. Scientific evidences point to human activity in ancient times on both sides of Ram Sethu as found by Deptt. of Earth Sciences and ocean technologists of Bharatam. This area should be declared a protected monument under the Protection of Monuments Act and declared as a World Heritage site by the Government of India and advised to UNESCO. The Geological and geophysical survey of the Sethu-samudram Project clearly reveal that Rama’s bridge appears to be a major Geological feature. The surveys reveal that to the north of Ram Sethu on the Palk Bay side, the formation have undergone down faulting and the Ram Sethu came up as an up thrown block. This geomorphic feature is seem to be continuous and verified both by bathymetry survey and NASA land image. One could clearly see that this is but a continuous feature with minor depressions upto about 100m width. In consonance with these things there are inter tidal marine sandy islands. These depressions and the islands appear to be neotectonic feature resulting in changes in bathymetry. It is a well established scientific phenomenon that there has been a major glaciation period (ice age) with glacial maxima at about 18,000 years BP. This feature has been observed and studied in several parts of the world with the help of submerged Corals. During the glacial Maxima, the sea level was about 130m lower than what is today. This is evidenced both on the east and west coast of India, where submerged Corals occur around 1 to 2m water depths and they are clear indicators of near coastal zone. The Ram Sethu ridge is a major marine divide. It separates the furious Bay of Bengal sea and sediments in the Palk bay and the very calm placid waters of the Gulf of Mannar. This ridge like feature is similar to the “Allaband” that was formed after a major earthquake in Arabian Sea in the early 19th century. In the Allaband, a long stretch of about 90km length and about 0.5 to 4km wide zone got uplifted because of a major tectonic event that was responsible for the earthquake. Since this event occurred in the recent past and such huge track of land was raised, people called that it is happened due to the will of Allah and named it Allaband. The Ram Sethu is a similar feature but formed much earlier due to tectonic causes that were prevalent in these areas. However, during the last ice age (18,000 year BP) the entire area from India to Sri Lanka and further south and southeast were contagious land due to the highly lowered sea level. As and when there were major melting of glaciers both from the mountains as well as from the Antarctic area, the sea level was rising. These features were well recorded and studied by several submerged Coral formations all over the world. About 7,300 years BP the sea level in the southern part of India was about 3.5 m above the present level. This has been deciphered by Dr. P.K. Banerjee, who studied Corals that found in the land part as of Pamban, Rameswaram, and Tuticorin etc. Subsequently the sea level went down and rose +2m above than what is today between 5000 to 4000 years B.P. The Geological logging of the bore holes drilled by NIOT in the inter tidal areas of Ram Sethu reveals very interesting details. In all the bore holes the top portion is seen to be occupied by recent marine sands. In almost of all the boreholes between 4.5 and 7.5m the borehole intersected hard formations, which have been found to be calcareous sand stones and corals. It is to be pointed out here that Corals are comparatively less dense, compact and somewhat easy to carry. The Corals normally grow atop compact to hard formations for the purpose of stability, and as the sea level rises, the Coral colony grows up vertically to maintain water depth of 1 to 2 m, which is essential for their survival. It is always observed that these Corals have continuous vertical growth like Lakshadweep, Andaman’s, and Gulf of Mannar Natural Park. These have always been found to grow on hard rock bottom. In the case of Ram Sethu area, we observe that the Coral formations hardly occur 1 to 2.5m in length and resting on loose marine sands. Most of these coral rock pieces are seem to be rounded pebbles of corals. These things appear to point these coral rock pieces and pebbles have been transported and placed in these areas. Since the calcareous sand stones and Corals are less dense than normal hard rock and quite compact, probably these were used by the ancients to form a connecting link to Sri Lanka, on the higher elevations of the Ram Sethu ridge and this is analogous to modern day causeway. In support of these observations there are many archaeological and geoarchaeological evidences on the south east coast of India around Rameswaram, Tuticorin and the western coast of Sri Lanka. There are raised Teri formations that supported a rich assemblage of mesolithic—microlithic tools indicating the presence of strong human habitation and activity in these areas as early as 8000 to 9000 years B.P and as recent as 4000 years B.P. On Sri Lanka side there are indications of human habitation extending to late Pleistocene (about 13,000 B.P) based on bone and fossils of human and animal form. All these point to a flourishing human activity on both side of Adams Bridge and probably when the sea levels were just right the link between India and Sri Lanka could have been established. http://www.lankalibrary.com/

  15. Do we really think that quarreling about religion can purify our tendency toward quarrel and hypocrisy? We seem almost unashamed to bicker and dicker about the unknowable. Do we think it is some kind of purification process? Maybe it is? Disgusting though it be.

    Merry Christmas

Today, everybody became like me. I didn't feel like the odd-ball at work yesterday as almost everyone was engaged in Hari nama as they left the office. Hare Krishna they said as they left. It sounded like Merry Christmas, but it was Hare Krsna. Yes, indeed, Merry Christmas! Welcome to my world. We defeated the political correctness of silence at last.
  17. This was a question that came to me as I was chanting in the rain on the way to the Festival of India on Centre Island this year. I rarely come up with questions, so when I had the opportunity to join a group who were posing questions for Jayadvaita Swami Maharaja to answer, I wrote it on a piece of paper. He handled it quite trivially, but later we discussed it in private and realized that there was a lot of appreciation for Krsna's unique position hidden in the actual answer. It leads us to inquire: why is God a cowherd boy? Why does He play the flute? All these things - is it His choice or is that just the way He is? Is He beautiful or is what He is our definition of beauty? Hold on to your head - but it will be a nice confusion. A humbling confusion. Acintya.
  18. Surely any progress we experience is only at the mercy of God. We are too weak and puny and attached and insincere. When will those final anarthas, chains to this mundane world fall away, Sri Krsna? You have done so much and You have made it painless; surely these little mushrooms are nothing for You to uproot, My Lord. I grow more and more bored and bored away from You every day. PrabhupAda: RUpa GosvAmI has recommended: yena tena prakAreNa manaH kRSNe nivezayet sarve vidhi-niSedhA syur etayor eva kiGkarAH His mission is, somehow or other, try to people..., try to engage people in KRSNa consciousness, they may think of KRSNa, some way or other. Then regulate them, after that. Actually our, this KRSNa consciousness movement, has attained little success on this principle. When we began this movement we never asked people that "You have to do this; you have to do that." No. "Please come and hear Hare KRSNa mantra." This was our policy. Never mind what you are. You may be Christian. You may be Jews. You may be Muhammadan or Hindu, Muslim. Whatever you may be, it doesn't matter. Please come and join with us, the Hare KRSNa chanting. Actually, that has become successful. In Tompkins Square, I was sitting underneath a tree and chanting Hare KRSNa mantra alone. And these young men, they used to assemble and dance also in the tune, for three hours--from two to five. In this way, we got our followers, associates. And gradually it developed into organization. So in the beginning we did not impose so many rules and regulations. There is no rules and regulations. First thing required: ceto-darpaNa-mArjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. Unless one's heart is cleansed, he cannot accept rules and regulations . That is not possible. Cora nasane dharme khaiH (?). If, if a man is thief, and if you give him moral instruction, that "Stealing is very sinful; do not do it," he will not care for it. A butcher, if you advise him that "Animal killing is very bad. It is sinful," he'll not accept it. That is not possible. His heart should be cleansed. PrAyazcittaM vimarzanam.

  22. Somehow I found this oldie but goodie thread. The editing of the Sri Caitanya Bhagavata is complete and the missing chapters are being added (but not yet placed in cyberspace until their final editing is complete). The new site for the Kingdom of God and its Bhagavata is CauseOfAllCauses.com for anyone interested in flooding their living rooms with tears. I miss you guys. Some of my best moments were spent at Audarya, way back when. gHari

Ki Jai! Let it happen! I see me starting with japa beads under a tree, becoming an accepted fixture in the park. Then after a month or so the drum would come out and the singing would become a little louder. I see me travelling from village to village, park to park. No big sales pitch for money or converts, just some sweet chanting to turn some hearts. We aren't crazy folk - I want them to see that. We are so very fortunate.

    Thanks JNdas

Vedesu, were you also Vedesu on SRV? That was where Gary became gHari one day - sort of a self-initiation ceremony to curb my envy of all the beautiful spiritual names the devotees had. I also remember that when Agrahya das closed up the SRV, many of us went to VNN. Then after a few years, that died too, and Jahnava-Nitai das became our munificent shelter. Maybe now we're ready to talk to real people, in real life. T r e m b l e. A father and mother approached me at Ratha Yatra weeks ago because their eleven year old daughter wanted to ask me about why I chant all the time. I felt a little self-conscious and looked around for a priest, but then decided to bear the possible criticisms around me and tell the girl the truth from my heart. Surely all the years here and there on the net helped me offer the young lady the best assistance I could. I didn't do too bad. Her eyes lit up when I said Hare Krsna meant "Please Radha, help me serve Krsna". It was meant to be. Yesterday, my first thought was "What will I do"? This is my life. This was my life. Real people are scary, but soon I won't need to work so I won't have to care about public opinion - then I'll be in the park every day. See you there. gHari
