Lord Krsna' s Entrance into Dvaraka

 

According to Yajnavalkya's religious injunctions, a woman whose husband is away from home should not take part in any social functions, should not decorate her body, should not laugh and should not go to any relative's house in any circumstance. This is the vow of the ladies whose husbands are away from home. At the same time, it is also enjoined that a wife should never present herself before the husband in an unclean state. She must decorate herself with ornaments and good dress and should always be present before the husband in a happy and joyous mood.

in order to put things in proper perspective you should also post vedic husband's duties. one of the reasons for the "woman liberation" trend is the unbalanced expectation of men to "receive", but not "deliver".

It is part of the ancient vedic idea of female chastity. when practiced correctly, this process gives a woman tremendous power, not just over her husband, but mystical as well. Vedas give many examples of such exceptionally chaste women and their power (just read the story of Tulasi devi)

Power? who wants power? devotee women are not interested in such mudane things. Give us Krishna!

 

Chastity? its time to stop questioning the chasitiy of devotee women. most of them are automatically chaste, with only the rare exception. more men have cheated on their wife, than wife on their husband. there are exceptions, not criticizing men. am criticizing those who criticize devotee women or cause the husband to question her chastity. thats maya with the intent to home wreck or cause fights.

In those days, there were restrictions on women as mentioned above primarily because of the following reasons.

 

When the husband is away on business trip, normally it would take several months or weeks due to less transportation in those days and she is not protected by her man due his absence. So to be on the safer side not to be attacked by piggy men, and not to invite trouble from such evil minded dirty men who abuse lonely women they were cautioned not to participate in parties and social events and not to laugh loudly etc etc. This was in practice not just in vedic period, even in kali yuga few 100 years back in India. They dont socialise with men unless they are well known to their family as a friend or a well wisher of the family. The ultimate reason is to actually help the women folks from getting attacked by other men and getting robbed off by thieves when she is alone.

It has nothing to do with male chauvnism. there were no 911 in those days. Situation in India is quite different in those days compared to now. Even now, in remote villages for safety reasons women dont socialise with other men unless they are well known to their family.

Many things in vedas talk about day to day life also for everyone and not just only about spirituality and reaching God although that was the ultimate goal. It is mostly misuunderstood and thats why Krishna came down to give the essence as Gita.

my comment regarding chastity was general, not just about devotee women. chastity does not automaticaly give you Krishna.

as to who is more chaste, or that women are automatically chaste, or what is the cause of home wrecking - that is all besides the point.

ok... after some thought on the topic, i remember in Ramayan, when Rama Bhagavan goes into the jungle to get the deer that Sita Mata so much, Rama Bhagavan leaves her in the care of Lakshaman. After some time and some unfortune sounds, Sita Mata gets worried and orders Lakshaman after Him. Before he leaves, Lakshaman draws a line in the dirt. He tells Sita Mata to stay inside the line and not to go on the other side. As long as you stay inside the line, nothing will hurt you.

 

When Ravan goes into the ashram where they live, Sita Mata tells him, "Sorry rishiwvr I cannot leave from my house right now, my husband is not here."

 

maybe the interpretations of the Vedas regarding behavoir of a Vedic wife have more to do with the safety and wellbeing of the wife.

 

Nowadays, this would probably not be literally true. But, in some parts of Vedic behavoir for a wife may still be followed for a modern wife.

the proposition assumes that the husband also is ideal and so would not make his wife mad for wrong reason.

when one laughs, then it means one is happy, happier.

when the husband is away, and the wife is happier, then it could give wrong signal to others that she does not love her husband and so is available for fooling around.

 

also, when a lady laughts, she looks very attractive to men.

and it could attract men when husband is away if she laughs.

so the advice is to not laugh when husband is away.

 

there are other rules, like:

a woman (above child age) should not sleep/lay on floor in the presence of men. this is because a sleeping beauty is a strong temptation for men to take undue advantage of her.

 

when i was in college in india, there was one girl in college. being rich and having her mother a ., she was more free in mixing with boys. in one camp at campfire,

boys and girs were telling jokes. one boy came to tell a joke and indicated that it was a bit obsene. immediately this girl left the campfire with her girends.

see, this is vedic culture.

 

in the west, almost every tv show has sex.

this makes it impossible for the whole vedic family to sit togather and see a show.

 

western tv shows are enemy if vedic culture.

 

of course time has changed and some vedic rules can be modiifed accordingly. but it would not be nice for the vedic people to revolt against our own scriptures and culture. please take time to understand the culture.

 

let me tell one more example.

 

a vedic poet of our time has sung a line I do not know exact words, but here is the translation:

 

"O vayudev, when a woman is sleeping and you blow,

then please do not blow so hard that it would move clothes and expose the private parts of the woman.

please protect her honor."

 

a vedic scripture says:

 

yatra naaaryastu pUjnante,

ramante tatra devahtah!

 

jai sri krishna! -madhav
