Guest guest Report post Posted October 2, 2002 Hey Veronica -- welcome! And to everyone else: I missed you guys!!!! I just got my computer back and my new service set up in NJ. I tried lurking for awhile when I could get online, but some of you -- I won't name any names... -- decided to send over *400 emails* in a two day period a while back and I got booted off when my mailbox filled up. So I have a lot of catching up to do... -- jojo Veronica wrote: Hi folks, Just wanted to say hey! I am in Warner Robins GA. I am enlisted in the Air Force, and I am vegan. Hopfully the planes will be used for suppling plant-foods and not used for war-fare. All the best Simon - Veronica Tuesday, October 01, 2002 4:28 PM Hello Hi folks, Just wanted to say hey! Guest guest Report post Posted September 22, 2004 I'm pretty sure you could grow your own, otherwise some healthfood stores may have it, maybe even your regular grocery store.. I haven't seen any though.. but a lot of people make different sprouts for their birds so I'd assume we can do it for ourselves too. Guest guest Report post Posted September 29, 2004 >Jackie <mami4enrique0516 >Does anyone know where i can find sun flower seeds sprouts to eat? I have sometimes found them at my local chain grocery store (Albertson's) in the produce section, close to or in the organic foods section. You might try asking your grocer if they carry sunflower seed sprouts and, if not, whether they would be willing to carry them. They are quite hardy compared to alfalfa sprouts and, apparently, grocers can order them in small enough amounts that one or two people purchasing them is enough business to make it worth ordering them in. If you decide to sprout your own, I *highly* recommend the book " The Sprout Garden: The Indoor Grower's Guide to Gourmet Sprouts " by Mark Matthew Braunstein. It's like a sprouters bible! I see on amazon that it's out of print but there are some used copies available. You might check the other online booksellers as well. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0913990965 Sparrow (who adores sunflower seed sprouts!) Guest guest Report post Posted September 30, 2004 I am new here, so Hi ! Re sunflower seeds ... do make sure you get UNtreated seeds, and not the ones to be fed to birds. These are often treated and may not do you any good ! God bless. Guest guest Report post Posted October 1, 2004 Sprouted Sunflower seeds are the easiest to make. You can buy bulk hulled seeds at any health food store. Soak the seeds for about 4 hours in water, then drain. cover and let sit overnight, then wet seeds and drain, leave till evening, wet and drain again, and leave overnight. They should be ready to eat, now if you want full sprouts then you have to use a dirt or paper medium. I prefer a thin layer of dirt. I have lot of tips on sprouting on we group becomingyounger. Sprouting changes the seed from a starch to a glucose vegetable sugar, making it easier to digest. CHRISTINE PARKINSON <Chrissiep wrote:I am new here, so Hi ! Guest guest Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Hi Mounika! Welcome:) I love Indian cuisine!! Are you from the north or the south? Are there no Indian markets in Chicago? We have quite a few in Dallas, and they do import some unusual looking produce!! I grew up in a part of Dallas that has Indian shops, markets, and restaurants on the west side of the freeway, and has various oriental shops, markets and restaurants on the other! Over the years I would talk to people and chefs in the stores, and pick up tips from them, like the best ways to make paneer (which I am hoping I can figure out a way to do from almond milk). I love curried okra, but also make a great saag aloo:) What's your favorite dish? I'm from Chicago, IL. I'm originally from India and have been a vegetarian(lacto - ovo) all my life. Don't think I can ever be a vegan though Growing up in India, had the good fortune to be introduced to a wide variety of vegetarian foods/recipes. In this country however, being a vegetarian is a lil' harder though I always find atleast a few options in any place and manage somehow. my favorite vegetable : mushrooms also love artichokes and spinach I have a few other favorites...but unfortunately they are not widely available in US Looking forward to learn and share some recipes. -Mounika
Guest guest Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Welcome to you, Mounika! I have to agree with Deb - I love Indian food as well and we have some local Indian shops around here in Texas. I'm really curious as to those fave veggies that you cannot find around your part of town. It maybe something that we've never heard about here at the group and might want to track down and try. Guest guest Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Hi Debra, Thanks for the Welcome. I'm from South India. I make both north and south indian cuisine though. Also experiment a lot with different world cuisines. You are right, In big cities like Chicago we do get most of the Indian vegetables in oriental and mexican markets...Still miss some... coming to my fav Indian dish, if I only have to pick one it is the stuffed brinjals(small round looking baby eggplants) curry. This is a very popular dish in my native state. Will share the recipe some time. -Mounika , " Thompson, Debra lee " <Debrathompson@f...> wrote: > Hi Mounika! Welcome:) I love Indian cuisine!! Guest guest Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Hi Shawn, here is a list of some unusual indian veggies which are not easy to find... spiky gourd (kantola) -- this is a cousin of bitter gourd( karela). its not bitter though, has a very distinctive flavor and is a seasonal vegetable available only in winter . It is one of my fav veggies. lotus root drumsticks green unripe jackfruit snake gourd bottle gourd ribbed gourd bitter gourd parval cluster beans broad beans banana blossoms a spl variety of yam and some leafy vegetables ( have to do some research to come up with their english or botanical names ). you can do a search on these to see some pictures on web. we can get frozen and canned versions of these here but the taste is no where near the fresh ones.I do get few of them fresh in indian grocery stores(Devon ave) in Chicago. I think they are also available in parts of California, NewJersey, Florida and Texas.Don't know if they are available elsewhere. -Mounika , " matrixenos " <matrixenos@h...> wrote: > > Welcome to you, Mounika!
