Hi, Wendywoo! I visited Ireland one year ago, and really enjoyed it.

I didn't find a lot of vegetarian food though, much less raw - how do

you deal with it? We did stay at an awesome vegan b & b for a couple of

nights though.

 

Amy, who got a raw " cook " book before we left FL, but didn't get a

chance to try anything before the move...

No Amy, the Irish do love their bacon and egg breakfasts . . . I think eating raw is a little difficult especially in the remoter parts of the country where the ingredients are not fresh or 'leafy'. Irish people love the root vegetables - carrots, parsnips, turnips etc. Of course I love carrots too, but I take em raw.

 

I did grow some little leaf salads which I can grow in a tub indoors. Our weather does not let us grow stuff like lettuce very easily because the weather is so damp we suffer from slugs and also over watering.

 

Actually there is quite a fashion in these parts now for the organic and even some farmers have found they can change over to organic. Which means we are finding some nice tomatoes in season, as well as tender peas. Green beans we don't see in the supermarkets unless they are imported. And I am afraid to say that most of the fruit is imported - even the apples are South African.

Funny how that is! When we were in FL - most of the fruit was from CA

or TX!! I think because FL makes so much money exporting their fruit.

 

In any case, I don't know what part you're in, but when we were in

Galway, there was a wonderful farmer's market, near the church...drat,

I can't remember the name of it right now ... but full of luscious

things. I have a photo (on a cd in the truck that has all our things

still) of the pile of carrots, literally a meter high! I loved it...

 

I wonder if putting a little fan by the plants would help with the

dampness?

we eat as much organic foods as we can afford.

luckily, each year, organics get less expensive. :)

Intro

 

 

Hi all,

 

My name is Debbie and I am from NY :)

 

All of us are veggies except for my 21 year old. We have been vegetarians

for almost 7 years now. One day woke up and said ok, today is the day and we

have not had animals to eat since!

 

I have been lurking for the past few weeks.

I think the best source of nutritional information for veg*ns is at

teh VRG site (host of this list!). The nutrition main page is:

Another useful site is: www.veganhealth.org

 

If you want high-calorie and high-healthy-fat foods, I'd recommend nut

buters, seeds, garbanzos (hummus is esp, kid-friendly). Beans, tofu,

tempeh, and seitan all can provide more than enough protein (as can

eggs and dairy if he's not vegan--although their fats are less healthy).

 

If he is vegan, you will want to be sure he is getting vitamin B-12,

probably through a supplement (Red Star vegetarian formula nutritional

yeast is another source of B-12, but I would not recommend making that

the only source in one's diet). I would also recommend a plant-based

Omega 3 (DHA) supplement (I use the one from Nu-Tru, available online

at Vegan Essentials and Pangea). IIRC, ground flax seeds (not whole,

which will not be digested) or flax oil can be converted within the

body into DHA, but in a less efficient manner. Vegans can easily get

enough calcium from plants, as well as fortified juices, soy/almond

milks, etc.

Hi Kelly,

 

I would suggest getting Becoming Vegan or Becoming Vegetarian (older but still

good), or Cooking Vegetarian. They all have lots of info on how to have a

balanced vegetarian diet. It really isn't that hard either. :) Cooking

Vegetarian actually have a veggie food guide that is easy to follow.

This is a fun group and it is nice to meet a neighbor(I'm in

Colorado, right next door. LOL). Funny thing Okra is one of my

favorites. I like to buy it fresh in season here at the farmer's

markets. The only problem is that I don't deep fry and Okra is sooo

good breaded and deep fried. Oh well.

Well for heaven's sake, I never saw my intro, but am seeing replies. Yahell

took our 11 year old out to celebrate her report card. We hadn't been to the

[Raw Food] Intro

 

 

Hello Group,

 

I have been reading your discussions and I have checked out the

files. I am so happy to have found this group. It has been almost

a month since I started to eat raw foods. Up to now, I have been a

big meat and sugar eater. So, it should come as no surprise that I

was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 2 years ago. That was the

beginning of my journey to health . . . I won't bore you with all of

the details, but approximately one month of eating at least 60% raw

has brought me many health benefits. After walking this morning my

blood sugar is down to 117. Now, I know it should be below 100, but

this is without any medication and I am enjoying apples, bananas,

pineapples, mangos,...etc on a daily basis. A month ago my morning

glucose reading was 165 to 185.

 

I used to avoid fruits and veggies and go for meat, pasta, breads

and candy. It is amazing to me that the green salads are suddenly

tasting so good. <<excuse me while I do my own little happy

dance>> LOL

 

I have not given up my morning cup of coffee yet, but that will come

in it's own time. I have added a green smoothie to the morning

routine and it lasts me until lunchtime. I am still using store

bought salad dressings, but that will change eventually too.

information that I have been able to put to use. This is a great

group.

 

And lastly, thank you Tommie for the information about L'equip

blenders. I ordered one online and received it in 2 days. I love

it!

Teresa, It may not have quite the horsepower but I don't need to make

sawdust. :) It's 900 watts which is plenty to blend veggies, fruit,

and nuts. I have a coffee grinder for my seeds. I got outbid on the

one I was trying for on eBay. :( I may have to buy a new one.

Teresa, I don't know about ice because I don't use it. I don't like to

chill my tummy. :) Not good for digestion and it's a shock to the

system. I HAVE been known to have a glass of lemonade on a hot summer

day, though. I do know that it makes powerfully good smoothies,

sauces, and " gravies " . And, BTW, another one has been posted on eBay.

May the best bidder win! It's only up for a couple of days, too.

Teresa,

I use ice occassionally to make the green smoothies a bit cool. The L'equip

makes a smooth smoothie. :-) I have pureed apples, cucumbers, kale, spinach,

papaya, mangos, parsley, mustard greens . . . . still experimenting. I have not

tried nuts or seeds yet.

 

I also blend in wheatgrass in the smoothies. I have not seen any discussions

here of anyone using the entire wheatgrass, only juicing it. Does anyone throw

in the wheatgrass for their smoothies? Does it work the same as just drinking

the juice?

 

My morning smoothie usually contains the following:

green powder

banana

apple or apple juice

kale

parsley

wheatgrass

sometimes I throw in frozen blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries (of

course the smoothie is no longer green) :-)
