Hey, who knows. I can't swear to the type but the guy did say they were

imported from Europe. I do know that no beaver are native to CA. Yeah know

how park rangers are.

That's true - but presumably there used to be dinosaurs as well - just

because something was here back in history doesn't mean it is good to

reintroduce it.

Anyway, what ever you or I think, if the government wants to reintroduce

them they will, and only time will tell whether there is any detrimental

effect.

They eat small trees. They go through like a bush hog and just level them!

You can tell where there are beaver! Looks like someone has come through

with giant scissors and cut the things down!

At Yosemite they have had to put wire cages around all the young trees to

protect them.

They don't have the natural predators anymore, Fraggle. If you are going to

return the beaver, you have to return the critters that ate the beavers.

The Castor canadensis were introduced in CA, Fraggle. They are native to

Canada, Oregon and the East Coast.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hcpb/species/nuis_exo/exo_spp.shtml

They introduced beavers, according to the park rangers, to Yosemite, for

some reason way back when and now they are doing extensive damage.

Oops, scores again. I didn't get Fraggles post that this one answers.

Fox, mink and birds of prey are not predators of beavers. Perhaps of kits

but not of the adults and the kits don't stray far from the houses.

The average beaver weighs in at 35 to 90 pounds.

Fox are small and eat berries, eggs, birds, repiles and *small* mammals.

Mink are small and don't eat larger mammals.

And, except for eagles, I don't see too many birds being able to carry off

too many beavers.

So, we're down to bears, mountain lions (not their usual choice and I don't

think they have them on that side of the pond <g>) and they aren't on the

usual dinner menu for wolves. Oh, and I don't think they have coyotes and

they aren't on their usual dinner menu either.

Guess we're down to humans as the only predator left.

How about removing introduced species that are taking over native species to

their detriment or demise?

if they kill kits, then they still kill em, correcto?

and mink and deadly to beaver kits...they go right into the den..

prolly worse fer european beavers as they many live in banks, and not lodges...

and no, no mountain lions over thar..

think they have them on that side of the pond <g>) and they aren't on the

usual dinner menu for wolves. Oh, and I don't think they have coyotes and

they aren't on their usual dinner menu either.

Guess we're down to humans as the only predator left.

We do have lots and lots of mink, stoats, weasels - so looks like all

the beaver kits might get eaten!

well..i would assume not all...

and tho a weasel, stout, er martin good easily get into a bank beaver's hole,

they'd be out of luck with a lodge...

tho..a mink could get in there....

way back when, knew someone who had a beaver lodge by their house...the beavers

would take carrots out of their hands...

i loved there sounds..that ughn ughn ughn call was damn adorable fer some reason

anyways..one spring..a mink got into the lodge

no kits that year.....

:(
