Two wrongs don't make a right!

First wild beavers for 500 years

Beavers were hunted to extinction for their fur

Beavers are being reintroduced to the UK, 500 years after they were

hunted to extinction for their fur.

Six European beavers are to be released at Lower Mill Estate near

South Cerney, Gloucestershire, and will be the first to roam wild in

the UK for centuries.

The six adult rodents were caught in Bavaria in the spring and have

spent the last few months in quarantine.

If the pioneering scheme is successful, it is hoped beavers can once

again thrive in the British countryside.

Although the animals will be confined to a 500-acre site to start

with, experts hope to remove the fences once the beavers have settled

in so they can roam freely.

The beaver was hunted to extinction for its fur and the pain-

relieving properties of its anal gland secretions.

Whereas, the American beaver can be destructive, environmentalists

say the European species should be a force for good in the

countryside.

It is vegetarian so it should not deplete fish stocks in rivers and

the beavers could also help keep waterways clear of debris

It would be nice if they went to Yosemite and took the European beavers that

they let loose there and took them back to Europe! They are extremely

destructive!

There is talk of letting them run free once established so that they can keep the waterways free of obstruction, so obviosly building dams is no longer one of their hobbies?

Hi Fraggle

They've been gone a long time. Reintroducing them will upset the

wildlife systems that are now there.

Another thought is - they have just banned fox-hunting, and they used

to hunt beavers - maybe the thought is that when the beavers multiply

they will 'have to keep the numbers down' by hunting them.

I really cannot see any good reason for reintroducing them - not that

I have anything against beavers :-) Incidentally I think it was wrong

to kidnap them from somewhere else, just to move them to another country.

There are too many in Yosemite. They are destroying the forests there.

They don't belong there. They belong in Europe and the animal rights groups

are up in arms about not killing them. I think they are some of the folks

that want to move them back where they came from. Perhaps they are part of

the folks that are wanting to reintroduce them?

I believe you need a license or some such loophole, and need to be a registered gamekeeper/pest controller, otherwise its the same as hunting.

I welcome the return of the beaver, and see it as another peice of the eco system returned......................and they are vegan!

It was on t.v. a couple of nights ago. They did a special on Yosemite. I

knew they were doing alot of damage and a lot of the CC kids were going

around fencing off trees to protect them. Just didn't know that they

imported the beavers from Europe.

thats just plain weird

why the heck would they import em from europe, where there are less then a

quarter million all told, when you can go 60 miles and find native beavers

here...

It seems they shouldn't have been released anyway. A person has

released them into an enclosed area on his land. DEFRA are rather

cross because they could escape and breed in the wild, and it has not

been okayed by them - so it seems that this is one man's whim.

I don't know Fraggle - but it does go on, even around here. We have

occasionally found dead trapped animals.

There may not be a big deal - but it may interfere with the other

wildlife here already - maybe there will be less food for them or

fewer places to build there homes (if beavers build homes). I am sure

it will have some effect. If what Lynda says is correct then they may

also devestate our trees.

Whether there will be a problem or not it seems very unfair of this

chap to decide that he will buy wild animals from Romania, put them in

quarantine for six months and then put them out in the wild.

Not the leghold ones. When we first moved here 30 years ago, we were

digging up the end of the garden and there was a cache of rusty

leghold traps and other contraptions buried up there. It was like a

torture chamber!

but how would they interfere

they are part of the natural environment of the UK

there use to be beavers there

hence, since they are exterminated, part of the web is missing....

beavers do kill trees, but, they encourage second growth of forests, and when

they build dams(apparantly yer european beaver ain;t as dam happy as ours are)

they create new habitats for a large number of species

plus, i read some study where beavers are responsible fer the spread of alders

across the Uk...

The Castor canadensis were introduced in CA, Fraggle. They are native to

Canada, Oregon and the East Coast.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hcpb/species/nuis_exo/exo_spp.shtml

They introduced beavers, according to the park rangers, to Yosemite, for

some reason way back when and now they are doing extensive damage.
