My goodness! We are becoming popular. Congratulations on taking the leap and going vegan. Of course we will all give you any information that you want. The only barrier will be helping you with product selection with you there in Hong Kong. But we can provide you with relatively short lists of ingredients that you would need to watch out for in the foods you select. One of the easiest ways to start is to find products that are labeled vegan and I don't know if you have such critters there. Let us know if you want such lists or if you already have them. I also live as a strict vegan...of course sometimes that is difficult unless you throw out all of your furniture. <smiling> But everything else is easy once you get accustomed to it and what to watch out for and what replacements are easy to get. Asian markets here in the states are popular with the vegan group as Asian foods are frequently vegan. Even fish sauce has a vegan alternative. So with you living there you just may have better access to vegan ingredients that you can transform into marvelous concoctions. So ask for whatever it is that you need or are curious about or just anything.

Hi " The Valley Vegan " (is that how you'd like me to call you?)

Thanks for the welcome. Nice to meet you.

In Hong Kong, I actually don't know any vegans here really, only a

few other vegetarians, but I'm not in touch with them, really. But

there are a lot of monks and nuns here that are vegans, but I don't

really know them personally, and it's kinda inappropriate to just go

ask them about being a vegan. But I don't really think that it's

extremely difficult, you just have to find the right things. I've

found clothing that's not made of fur or wool already. I have found

a few vegan restaurants and confirmed their addresses over the phone,

but haven't gone there yet. im sure they'll just be like normal

restaurants, just the food being vegan. However, it's difficult

finding synthetic black shoes that still look formal and not the

sports wear type, so i'll have to hunt them out soon before next

august when i become 18. About eating, well, I normally eat quite

simply and every day is basically the same. I eat rice/noodles/bread

and vegetables like regular. Then I just add tofu, instead of meat.

There are many different kinds of tofu here, cooked in different ways

here, so I have a variety there. I also eat beans sometimes.

I hope that answers your questions. If you've got any more, I'll be

glad to answer.

Hi Nikki

Thanks for your welcome. Nice to meet you.

Don't worry about not knowing much about Hong Kong, you can learn

from me. But there are a lot of general ideas too, so you could

still be able to help out a little.

Hi Peter

You're welcome. I don't know that much about you.

Where do you live? Are you a teen, or an adult?

By the way, I actually have found synthetic black

shoes already. In the market, there are lots of them,

dunno why I didn't notice before. Sounds like I got a

lot of things covered already. Also, these days, I've

been thinking of getting some nail polish, but I

wonder, would some of these have animal products in

them or not?

Hi Karen, I live in Wales, I am 44 ish. I have synthetic shoes from a vegetarian supplier...............sorry to mention it , but a lot of commercial adhesives used in shoes are not animal friendly, BUT.....a lot are.so you may never know. But dont let that put you off, at least you arent wearing something elses skin. You mentioned previously that you knew of some monks who were vegan, I assume they were Buddist?..best you dont disturb them with questions, although there are a lot of Buddists who will openly talk about their religion, there are some who dont. You will have to do a web search for the cosmetics I `m afraid that unlike Fraggle , I dont dabble! poetry eh? Are there any Chrimbo celebrations over there? Wot are you doing if anything on the daY? Hi Peter,

Wales is really cool. I've never been there,

though.

Adhesives? Do you mean like glue? I never thought

of that. Guess I'll have to look some more and ask

that. The problem is, that some people may not know.

Yes, I know of some monks, and yes they were

Buddhist also. I know of them because many many years

ago (before I was a vegetarian, though), my

grandfather passed away and our family had monks to do

the ceremony and on-going prayers like once a week for

several months, etc... Yeah, you shouldn't disturb

them with questions, plus they probably wouldn't even

recognise my family anymore, it was like doing

business. They do the ceremonies all the time, not

just our family.

Yeah, I guess I should look around the web. Maybe I

shouldn't have asked you that in the first place,

after all, you're a guy, and wouldn't be using nail

polish in the first place. lol

I have no idea what Chrimbo celebrations are. I've

never heard of that. Is it a common celebration in

Wales?

Karen,

If you want to make sure your nail polish is vegan you will probably have to

order it on the

internet (put Vegan nail polish into google and see what you get) but check the

postage

costs as they may charge more to Hong Kong.

There is a lot on the internet about buddhism and vegetarianism. The big thing

with

buddhism is " do no harm " so it makes sense. However the christian commandment is

" thou shalt not Kill " and how many christians observe that commandment.

What God had done for peace on earth, what man destroyed from day of birth

They are concerned with feelings; they're just ashamed to cry

And one mans plan to push the button makes other sacrifice

The serenade is dead and now the only question's why?

Wow...order on the internet. My parents would

probably never let me do that, much less have them

being sent to me. And I wouldn't even do that myself

either. I'm not trying to be picky or anything, but

I'm sorry but that isn't going to work. Stores in HK

are the only choices for me. What I was actually

asking for is what kind of ingredients I should avoid

and all that.

Peter,

Oh. Now, I get it. Well, in HK there are some people who do

celebrate it. I don't though. I don't really pay attention to it

really. To me it is a Christian holiday, and I'm not a Christian, so

I don't pay attention to it. I know that it has developed and

considered not just for christians, but still I'm not that kind of

person to celebrate these things. There are lots of decorations and

things in some places, but I don't pay attention to them either.

Hi everybody,

I joined the group a couple of weeks ago; thanks for the invite to join.

I have been going through the messages and files. This is a wonderful group;

very friendly. All the recipes in the files are so good and everyone seems to be

so helpful.

I am originally from India; now living in Atlanta. We have been vegetarians

for generations.

I will post some Indian recipes later.

Dawn,

you will love this group the people here have the most wonderful recipes and

the chats are priceless. Thanks for being honest. I know my husband had a

difficult time until he read the book Mad Cowboy now he is the family

activist..lol It can be a hard transition especially when you have family and

friends who don't agree with your choices . I think of the 95 animals I save

each year by choosing not to eat meat and also the wonderful health I have

experienced that has helped me get through the rough spots when I crave the

foods I was raised on especially tuna fish. Here you will have lots of support

and the group has also a wonderful section with any yummy you can imagine. So

welcome happy cooking.

Steph

Hello

Why don't you tell us a little about yourself in this group, otherwise we might think you have just joined to advertise !

We have quite varied discussions here, sometimes serious, sometimes lighthearted.

I hope you enjoy it here.

Hi Jo, I am definitely not here to advertise. I am in New Jersey and just want to make new acquaintances with others who are Vegan. I hope this site is not restricted to everyone talking about their health issues as I want to keep it positive for me Of course I have a couple but prefer not to discuss them.

You can learn more about me from my AIM Page at veganfitness. I have a lot of my interests, pictures, etc. Thanks for responding. Gigi

Hi Gigi

We hardly ever discuss health issues here. Occasionally someone will have a problem but not often. The discussions are not limited to vegan issues - anything that people feel like talking about.

Hi Gigi-

I'm not sure what responses you are seeking. You haven't said anything about yourself.

Wanna share something that we can respond to?
