Hi, Whitty, Great to hear from a (former) neighbor. :-D I lived in Sun Prairie in 1985-1987. Nice town. I live in Madison now, only 3 miles from work, which is wonderful in terms of time and being kinder to the environment. Thanks for the info. You're right, everyone's been so welcoming and helpful!I hadn't thought about how living in the dairy state affects my long-learned eating habits... dairy products are so "normal" and widespread here. Welcome Sue! I used to live in Sun Prairie, right next door to

you...my brother still does!

I get the digest e-mail of these messages, so every time I come in to

answer questions that I have answers for, there are a dozen who have

beat me to it. That's how great these group members are!

I just became vegan this year after years of vegetarianism, so I

understand your situation as I'm still struggling with the ingredients

myself. In addition to the Animal Ingredients book, most foods list

wheat, soy, nuts, milk and eggs for allergy reasons. For example,

under the ingredients the product will list in bold type: May contain

wheat, milk, and nuts. It's not a catch-all, but until you've got a

handle on what you want to put in your body, it helps a little with

items you've not tried before if you're not certain.

Something else to be aware of is that you shouldn't rely on the kosher

or pareve labels on items (something I used to do early on in my

vegetarian days). Something that is considered meat and dairy-free

under kosher laws *can* in fact contain trace amounts of both, because

if an ingredient has been removed a certain amount of times from the

original product it's not considered to be meat or dairy. I think

Animal Ingredients answers that issue well.

Anyway, good luck in your transition-- it really does get easier...even

in the Dairy State!

Of course not. That's the whole purpose of controlling the weather... to make sure people don't have the weather they want!

Welcome to the group.

What a great combo -- blues and vegetarian food!

After you tell your veggie friends about all the great recipes in the

Files

Hi Nancy,

Here is lovely recipie try to cook, it is great, I am sure you`ll like.

Warm hugs to you and all your family

Muzo

Falafel

1 12-oz can garbanzo beans

1 clove garlic

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2-3 tbsp tahini sauce (sesame paste)

juice of 1 small lemon

½ tsp salt

Drain 1/3 of the water from the can of garbanzo beans into a small bowl.

Set aside for later use.

In a blender, mix together the garbanzo beans with the remaining can water

and the rest of the ingredients.

Blend for 1-2 minutes until a smooth, slightly fluid paste is formed.

If desired, add small amount of the saved can water and blend to create a

more fluid consistency.

New to the group

Hello,

New to the group and I wanted to introduce my family.

Hubby and I have been married for 20yrs and have 3 children--a 19yr old son, who

is going to culinary school(he is not liking the new eating style), a 13yr old

son and a 11yr old daughter.

Hubby and youngest son are willing to try our new eating style, which is a big

surprise to me!!

Daughter and I have been ready for a few years now, but never committed.

After reading a book last week, I decided to commit.

I do not know what to cook,I really need help!!!!

We have tried tofu and do NOT like it at all!

We love pasta and we would eat beans if I could find a good recipe that is

seasoned quite well!

Nancy
