Hi Deborah, I, too, am a grandmother and became vegetarian for health reasons.

I know vegan would be better, but I can't find any suitable substitute for

ricatta cheese and I cannot do with out my italian foods.

My 16 year old granddaughter is vevetarian, but that only means she subsists

on vegetable junk food and not burgers. She practically lives on fries and

granola bars. UGH!

I look forward to hearing some of your favorite recipies.

Hi Judy from LA,

Wow, great going there for you and your husband!

I have early stages of arthritis, lowgrade asthma, and fibromyalgia too,

though my blood pressure is normal. I don't take any kind of prescription

medications though, preferring to work with herbal and nutritional healing. It

is

so rewarding to see the changes that good nutrition make in your health, and

certainly worth the effort to keep learning and doing it better. I'm new

here too, and just returned to a vegetarian diet after a year of eating meat

again. I had been vegetarian for about 2 1/2 years prior to that. During the

meat year, I was still eating vegetarian many days, and eating mostly

healthy things, but also eating the meat, and unfortunately going on sugar

binges,

which had to stop! I was getting too sedentary too, so got back to

exercising. Anyway, would be happy to share about what I've learned about

anti-inflammatory herbs and eating if you're interested, and have found the

herb Nettles

pretty much has taken care of my lowgrade asthma, while Bee Pollen (from

local bees) and Eyebright seem to take care of seasonal allergies that

contribute to it, though I still take a child's dose of Benadryl at bedtime so

I don't

get stuffed up during the night. We all vary though, and if you're on meds,

you need to check and be sure there are no conflicts. I look forward to

hearing more about what you're doing, since the problems are so similar!

<<<Hi,

My name is Judy, and I live in Baton Rouge, LA. My husband and I have

Rheumatoid Arthritis, along with other physical problems including high

blood

pressure, asthma, and fibromyalgia. One month ago we started a mostly

vegetarian,

organic diet, heavy on raw foods, hoping to counteract the effects of the

strong medication we have to take. My husband has lost 14 pounds, and I've

lost

10, which is good news for our joints. Also, his BP is now normal. We began

the diet, hoping it would help boost our immune systems, which is

compromised

by the meds we have to take for the RA. Having never considered

vegetarianism

before now, there is a lot I need to learn, if we are going to succeed. We

still eat seafood occasionally, but no other meat at all, and it has been

surprisingly easy for us. In fact, vegetables now taste better to me than

ever

before, so I look forward to trying out the recipes on the site.

Hi Barbara Jean,

Thanks so much for the great tips----I would love to hear more. My husband

has the high BP, but he is calling his doctor this week to see about lowering

it and hopes to discontinue it all together soon. I've had the fibro for 17

years and the only med I've ever taken for it is something for sleep disorder.

Our goal is to boost our immune systems and get healthy enough to make it

without the strong (and expensive) medications entirely. I will do some

research

to find out if any of the herbal remedies interact with the meds I take. The

problem with Rheumatoid arthritis is that the medication is the only thing

that will stop the rapid bone erosion. So we've begun this diet in hopes that

the RA will go into remission and the bone erosion will stop or slow

dramatically. We've reached the point that we're eating about 50% raw daily and

100%

organic. My husband exercises daily, and that is something I really need to

work on. I never thought I could handle a vegetarian diet, being from the

South and growing up eating lots of pork, beef and chicken. But a week or so

into

it, my tastes totally changed, and I no longer want the meat, and my sweet

tooth has gone away, as well. And I've broken my lifelong carbonated soda

habit, too, which is a good thing, since that can cause even more bone loss.

Thanks for sharing your health tips and herbal remedies. I appreciate any

advice

you can give me.

Judy in Baton Rouge

Hi Deborah and Katie M.,

I am also a grandmother, and am raising 2 of my grandchildren (7 & 8). I

also became vegetarian for health reasons. I feel a lot better since I decided

to do this. I try to feed the children vegetarian as much as I can, but they

spend time with their mother and grandfather once in a while and I can't control

what they feed them. I am enjoying the posts and recipes that I have found.

Hello there and welcome to group. I am still a newbie myself! You will

enjoy all the recipe sharing that this group participates in. I am having a

hard time keeping up with them all. And that is a good thing. I never had

this much to eat when I was an onmi or recipes to choose from.

Hi Steph, sounds like a yummy dinner! Just wanted to inquire if your

children are vegetarian? My 14 month-old baby boy is so far

vegetarian and I would like to keep it that way. He just adores the

Loma Linda veggie franks and the Morning Star sausage patties are his

fav. Fortunately for me, he loves all his veggies too, especially

legumes. I need some creative recipes that make good finger food

though because he would prefer that he feed himself (Mr.

Independent!). Be well, Steph

Is the girlfriend vegan and gluten free or just vegan? If she is not

gluten-free, this list may be more restrictive than you need. (Though

of course you are still welcome!)

hi aletha,

i don't know where you live, but here in nyc

there is a vegtarian diner called curly's lunch,

and they make only vegan desserts--their red

velvet cake would turn a meat eater vegan! so i

know what you mean about good vegan baking.

i myself am not vegan but an ovolacto vegetarian

(eat eggs and milk). i've got burger recipes on

my blog that can be made vegan by subbing egg

replacer for the egg and soy milk for the dairy

milk. maybe your family would like them. i've

given them to vegetarians and meat eaters with

good success.

good luck on your vegan adventure!
