Hello

Hello everyone. i am new to the group, so I just wanted to introduce

myself. I stopped eating meat when I was in the 8th grade. I was very

successful with this and even attempted a vegan diet several times,

although I found it very difficult to completely make the

transformation. This lasted for about 5 years, then about 3 years ago,

(when I was 21) after many years of prompting by my now husband, my

family and friends, I gave in and began eating meat again. It is a

decision I have regretted ever since, but have just found it easier to

eat what I fix my husband, who eats a LOT of meat. Well, I am ready now

to start eating vegetarian again! I have joined the group to get some

new recipes and to discuss things that may come up. I know it is going

to be difficult, especially with my husband, but, maybe I can finally

convince him! Hey, and he cant cook, so its either eat my food or

starve. haha

Hi Amy! My name's Jessica and I stopped eating meat 3 years ago, when I was a Jr

in Highschool. My fiance does eat meat, so I know what you mean. He's constantly

teasing me about it, but it's all in good humor. I don't think he'd ever try to

get me to eat meat again. He knows the reasons why I stopped and that I feel

very strongly about it. It's nice to have you here!

Hi Amy,

There are a lot of great meat subsitutes, like Worthington products

and Morningstar Farms. They make

patties, " meatballs " , " scallops " , " sausage " , and lots of other great

things. You can make a lot of delicious meals with those, and your

husband will probably enjoy them.

If he is willing to read it, " The China Study " might change forever

the way he thinks about consuming animal products. I have been a

vegetarian for a long time, but still ate lots of cheese... after

reading this book, I am now 99% vegan. Really relates the consumtion

of animal products with cancer, heart disease, and lots of other

preventable degenerative diseases, and it isn't a " fad book " , but

instead has lots of scientific documentation. You can buy a used

copy at amazon.com.

Hi Gang;

I'm not a vegetarian, but I fully agree with the sentiment that Sharon

puts forward. I might add that when you're invited to someone's house, just

ask them to if its not too much trouble to prepare an extra serving or two

of whatever vegetables or salads they were planning to serve. Tell them up

front that your'e a vegetarian!

But I certainly agree: don't eat what you don't want to eat! Just 'cause

its there doesn't mean you have to eat it!

Welcome Darcy! You don't say how old your daughter is. This is not going to

be popular, but it is the truth.

Hating vegetables is a learned behavior. Yes, it is a behavior, not a taste.

Most boys grow up seeing their fathers eat meat and potatoes and just skip the

salad and vegetables, They grow up thinking that is how to be a man and that

eating veggies is a girl thing. In turn they grow up and, by example, teach

their sons the same thing.

As a behavioral intersession specialist, I know that the best thing you can do

for a child up to age 10 is to give them a small helping of the vegetables you

expect them to eat and not give them anything else until they do. The key here,

is that you expect the child to eat it. You don't sit there hopefully urging

her on or making a big deal out of it. You expect it as surely as you expect

the sun to come up tomorrow morning. When the child learns to eat her veggies

before she gets anything else, give her something else with them. As long as

ske keeps eating them progress to the full meal at the same time. t

Regardless of the faces she makes or the gagging sounds or the groans you sit

there, enjoying your own meal, ignoring her until her veggies are eaten, Then

without comment pass her the other foods.

The ignoring stops if the food goes on the floor. That you have to deal with

seperately as defiance, not an eating prefferance.

Eating prefferances are OK. Not everyones favorite food is zucchini. some

prefer broccoli. There is nothign wrong with that, but not liking vegetables,

just beause they are vegetables is a learned behavior that needs to be

unlearner. The same goes for people who just cant stand beans. With 50 or so

different types of beans, each with a unique taste, do you really think a person

can just hate the taste of all of then. Of course not. hating beans is a

learned behavior. My X used to hate hamburger meat. Regardless of what it

was in or how it was cooked, he hated it. He loved steak. The truth was that

he thought he was worth steak and trying to serve him hamburger was an insult to

his worth.

Now I personally don't liked chocolate. I know most people see this as a

personalit flaw, but I just don't care for the taste. I eat it if doing

otherwise would offend someone, but it gives me no pleasure to eat it. This

doesn't mean that I hate every desert or candy. I really dislike the laste of

some medicine I take, but to be healthy I must take it and I do. Crying about

it and gagging and making faces don't help as no one is here to see it or to

know if I take it or not. It is a part of being responsible. Children learn

that as they learn self discipline as they grow up. Eating vegetables is the

same thing. She may never acquire the taste for cikrabbi, that is fine, let her

eat brocolli.

Welcome, Darcy,

have you a place to have a small garden? with a small row or two for

each child to plant something? if not perhaps window boxes for your

girls. its amazing how planting, watering, watching them grow turns

veggie haters into veggie lovers!! tomato's are fairly easy, if they

like pickles growing cucumbers to make into pickles might stir up some

interest. radishes and carrots are good for kids to grow too. fresh

peas from the garden are soooo much better than canned or frozen its

like a whole new veggie ( imo anyway )

lot's of great tried and true recipies in the files here ( sooo many

recipies, so little time, haha) welcome to the wonderful world of

veggie/vegan eating and good luck with those kids- bet 6 mos to a year

from now they'll both be veggie lovers!!

peace,

Darcy,

When I was growing up in the early 50's, Australian mothers

boiled vegetables until they were limp and mushy and completely

flavourless. I didn't like most vegetables and hated pumpkin in

particular. I learned to stirfry in the 70's and experimented with

flavours and tastes and grew to like vegetables.

I would try cooking the vegetables in different ways. You could

make patties, soups, TVP burgers, lentil burgers ... there are

thousands of receipes here. Maybe your children will like some of

those.

I like the other suggestion of getting them involved in growing

vegetables themselves too.

I think forcing them to eat anything they don't want to eat is

a bad idea. I am 65 now and the thought of eating pumpkin still

makes me want to throw up.

Good luck, and welcome to the group.

Harry

Hi- katherine/Jannah

First pray....:) Then do what you can--- controll what you eat and

add " raw " food where you can in your families diet. Every " raw " thing

they consume does benifit them and when you look at the good it helps

motive you. As far as the winter-there are alot of things you can

grow inside like micro greens/sprout/ wheat/barley grass for juice...

I really enjoy green smoothies in the morning and that is just fruit

and greens...Depending on your beliefs you can use frozen

veggies/fruit-especially if you freeze it yourself---My

meat /potato/corn/bread eating hubby suggested we go " raw mostly " at

home and that he see's a big change in our life...I have found that

when we allow others to see the fruit in our lives from our choice it

speaks so much louder than any words we can speak...and remember

I had been a vegetarian for years when I gave birth to my daughter. Her

dad is an omnivore, and I decided to give my daughter the choice of

eating what appealed to her, rather than limiting her to my diet. I

talked with her about my food choices, but didn't really try to

influence her except by example (and the occasional reference to what

some people had on their plates as " dead animals " !). At age 15, she

decided to give up meat. She's 24 now, and hasn't gone back.

Hello

Hi Everyone, just want to introduce myself as I am new to this group.

I am also new to vegetarianism and that is why I have joined here, to

get some good recipes and learn from others. I am very proud of myself

for having made this decision, as I have thought about it (a lot!) for

years. I have worked with and loved animals my whole life, and serve

as a volunteer Director for an animal welfare organization in the

little town I live in just north of Toronto. I have always felt very

conflicted about my diet choices, so now I just feel fabulous in so

many ways. Anyhow, I don't have a recipe to post, but I hope to very

soon. Thanks for letting me join in!

more recipes than you could dream of. If you have any questions don't

hesitate to ask. Betweeen us we have a wealth of knowledge in this

Thanks Christie, I will check out the files. Just one question - a

member of the group mentioned that Quorn is banned in Canada - why?

What is wrong with it? I eat loads of the stuff.

Thanks

Sorry Claire I can't help you there. Perhaps one of our Canadian

friends can help.... Quorn is certainly available in many countries and

has been around here for quite a few years. A lot of people on the

group eat it, although I've never tried it.

Hi Terry and all the new members:
