Hi All

I just have the information on my lists, it's a good idea to

include that though so you don't get loads of people asking the list

members to get them off. Things can get very messy when that happens!

Good point - I'll do that. Any other suggestions - some nice " vegan

friendly " quote, or something?

LOL - that's a bit quick! Actually, had I realised was there, I

probably wouldn't have started the list - but now we're here, let's give it

a couple of days!!! :-)

Best to keep it pretty minimal -- even the friendliest quote

or piece of advice soon becomes a bit over-familiar!

Unless you want to be constantly changing it I would agree with Paul. It

is a shame don't provide system to show random quotes.

As for a merger, I think there is plenty of rooms for different

lists. is predominantly aimed at the UK while this list may

attract people from other countries. I did give Vegan chat a little plug

on mine so maybe more people will join.

Welcome to the group, Angela. I hope you can fid some good ideas here

for

your family. Do take some time to check out our files section, it is

full of

delicious tried recipes that have been posted here by our members.

I wish I had some advice for you about polenta. I have never bought

it in that

way. I guess if I had to come up with a menu of what to serve with

it, I might

make a salad and then a side of a cooked vegetable in a sauce. That

way I

could dip the fried polenta in it, etc. Let us know what you come up

with

tonight. :)

Carol,

Hello and Welcome!

What a wonderful story you have shared with us and CONGRATS not only

becoming vegan but on the support of your hubby! That is so wonderful

that he joined you and believed with you!

You already are helping the animals simply by speaking out in yer

beliefs. Whether you change a lot or a little, you are giving others

something to think about and sharing your knowledge. This is not

always an easy thing to do.

Take care,

Nikki :)

Hi Carol!

What a wonderful story, I've had a long day and you have just made it worthwhile to get online tonight!! I just wanted to say hi and extend a big hug to you and your husband. That's what I call love!! Like you, I saw and read some stuff that horrified and saddened me to my very core.

Friends showed me videos taken undercover of animals in the worst torment and agony beyond my wildest nightmare and I felt so disgusted and enraged at the industries, myself and others that I cried so hard I honestly felt I might breakdown. In a way I think I did and I rebuilt my life around my respect and love for animals.

Most of my friends and all my colleagues are meat eaters. I appear tolerant but in my head I am sickened that they just don't care what they are buying into. They would deny that they don't care - but there's so much information out there, how can they miss it!?

My partner is vegan which is great. We met out hunt sabbing, covered in mud and saving foxes.

Best wishes,

xx

Hi Tina

I think the eating for blood-types is a really stupid idea. Peter contacted the Vegan Society about this some time ago, and received the following:-

Thanks for your message. Your instinct is right - the 'blood types' theoryis certainly a dodgy one! Below I've copied out the response which our StateRegistered Dietitian, Sandra Hood, wrote to another person enquiring aboutthe theory. Sandra works for the NHS, and does voluntary work for us in herspare time. The theory seems to have been put forward in the book by DrPeter D'Adamo, which is referred to in Sandra's reply. Although it's acomplicated area, and Sandra goes in to some detail about blood types perse, the upshot seems to be that, as yet, there's no widely availableevidence to support the doctor's theory, and it's not gained particularrespect from medical/nutritional professionals.Hope this helps a bit. With very best wishesCatherine GraingerInformation OfficerSandra's reply:"I have tried, unsuccessfully, to get a copy of the book by Dr Peter D'Adamoto try and understand the reasoning behind his recommendations regardingblood types and specific diets. I must say I am very sceptical about thewhole thing but I am not a biochemist and therefore I have little knowledgein this field. There are many blood group sytems, at least 21, and of these the betterknown are the ABO, Lewis and Rhesus systems. The ter 'blood group' refers toa defined systm of red blood cell antigens (blood group substances) such asthe ABO group. The 'blood type' refers to the antigenic phenotype (a proteinthat forms an antibody), for example, a person may have blood type O.The plasma membranes of the red blood cells of most individuals containblood group substances of type A, type B, type AB, or type O. Individuals oftype A have anti-B antibodies in their plasma, and will agglutinate type Bor type AB blood. Individuals of type B have anti-A antibodies and willagglutinate type A or type AB blood. Type AB bloodhas neither anti-A noranti-B antibodies and has been designated the universal *recipient*. Type Oblood has neither A nor B substances and has been designated the universal*donor*. As you will probably know, the body does not usually produceantibodies to its own constituents. So as blood group O, an individual wouldhave neither A nor B substances, and would posses antibodies to both theseforeign substances. You state that the book suggests that what you should eat is all to do withthese agglutinating lectins. Lectins are proteins and some of these proteinsagglutinate (clump together as a result of interactions with specificantibodies). These agglutinins are used in blood typing and in identifyingor measuring the strength of immunoglobulins, in other words identifying ormeasuring immunity. The above is a simple explanation but as you can imagine the ABO system ismuch more complicated, for example, there are many subgroups wihin thissystem. Therefore I question the simplistic explanations made by Dr D'Adamothat if you are blood group A you should eat such and such, because withinblood group A you could be of the subgroup A1 and someone else could be ofthe subgroup A2.You would need to speak to a biochemist, not a nutritionist or dietitian. Ihave put out various feelers, but as to date no one has been able to comeback to me verifying Dr D'Adamo's work. If you hear otherwise, please let meknow. Also, does D D'Adamo give references in his publication?"

This might sound stupid to some of you but I had no idea that blood-type could effect what u should take in, so I guess my point to this post is that I'm wondering what others on the boards know about this issue.

I'm half asleep now and really should get to bed, so if any of this is just gibberish, keep I'm mind that I'm not fully here!

Hi Tina and WELCOME!

There is a book out there called " Eating Right For Your Type " . And

amazingly enough it suggests that I need a lot of meat. Funny thing

is, I have never felt better or had as much energy since I stopped

eating meat.

Before I went Vegan, I read up alot on the pros and cons of

everything. From why your body needs animal products to why it

doesn't. I then made the only decision that felt right to me. I

became a Vegan.

I guess basically it comes down to individual choice. I found that

once knowing that I could get all the nutrients I needed from foods

that contained no animal at all and in doing so I made the planet a

little greener and saved some animals form sufferng, there would be

no turning back.

The book is quite interesting, but it is just another fiction novel

to me.

Again, welcome to the group and yes, the 15 month old probably has

ALOT to do with being tired!

Welcome Katherine! I believe you will enjoy this site, reading about lots

of our experiences, as being veg*n and our family experiences. Enjoy, Tracy

Hi everyone,my name's Katherine and I just joined the group. I am

excited about talking to other people who have similar eating habits

to mine. I live in Arlington, Virginia and have a 10 month old son

Jacob who I am trying to raise vegetarian as well, but am having

some difficulty because my husband is not vegetarian. I'm very glad

I found this site, because I haven't really met many vegetarians

where I live, and the general population looks at me like I'm crazy

when I tell them I'm a vegetarian. I can't wait to get to know you

guys and hopefully learn things I need to be a vegetarian!

my cooking,so it's made it easier on me in our household. That crazy look you get

from people is universal, even out here on the west coast.Good luck, and ask any

questions that come to mind. The people in this group are very helpful.

Hi Katherine,

Welcome. I have a 10 month old daughter named Dahlia.

I am raising her vegan like mommy and daddy. So far so

good. She is extremely happy and healthy. She's got a

big appetite for yummy healthy foods. Her favorite

snacks are kidney beans and chick peas believe it or

not. She gets excited over them like they are candy or

something. Good luck.

Hi Katherine! Glad you joined! Congratulations on trying to raise

your son veggie. It seems hard to find non-carnivorous husbands huh?!

:-) Hope you can find any info you need!

Hi Katherine,

My name is Shawna and I just found this site and recently joined as well. I

know exactly what you mean about feeling somewhat isolated in being

veggie/vegan. My husband is a meat eater too but agrees this is a healthier

diet for our 14mth old daughter, though he would like her to be ovo-lacto as

opposed to vegan. I like you am really glad to have found this site and look

forward to getting to know everyone, learning and sharing info.

PS I live near Frederick in Maryland.

Happy Holidays!

Shawna

Hi Jeri,

When I first went vegetarian I would go to the library and look for vegetarian cookbooks. I used to read them from cover to cover and try some of the recipes.

You can also do searches on Vegetarian cooking and find many, many different recipes to try. Along with this website where lots of recipes are posted.

good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Jeri,

I am in the same position. I am not vegetarian yet either and have

been looking into it. Since then I am far more aware of what I

decided to eat though. Which in the long run is a very good thing

anyway! Good luck. If you find any really tasty dishes please,

let me know.
