In our archives there are 621 messages with nutritional yeast in them. Here

check it out and I bet you'll find some great things to try your nutritional

yeast flakes with.

Also under salad dressing, you'll find my Ceasar Salad dressing using it. It

is yummy and all vegetarian, unlike the ones you find at the grocery store

that has anchovies in them.

Enjoy,

nutritional yeast

I tried a tofu recipe I found here and really liked it. I don't

remember the name but it was for baking tofu.

The recipe called for nutritional yeast. I need some other

recipes/uses for that because I had to buy a lot more than I can use

for that one tofu recipe.

Any ideas or favorites you want to share? Or if anyone knows any sites

on the internet with a 'search by ingredient' in them let me know and I

can use that.

style seasoning with it. Here is the recipe for that.

CHICKEN STYLE SEASONING

1 1/3 C Yeast flakes

3 TBS onion powder

2 1/2 tsp garlic powder

2 1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp celery seed

2 TBS Italian seasoning

1 tsp tuneric, for color

2 TBS parsley flakes

Blend smooth all except dry parsley flakes. Stir in parsley. Store in

glass container. Avoid holding jar over steaming food as seasoning

will take on moisture and become caked and stiff.

I sprinkle some on the crust when I make pizza. If I remember soon

eneough & nbsp;to add it, it goes on before I bake the crust, but if I happen to

forget, I sprinkle it on either before the sauce, or after the sauce, but before

the cheese.

It has a cheesy flavor and is also rich in B vitamins. You

need to buy it in health food stores usually. You may need to look

for " brewer's yeast flakes " ; a lot of places don't know what

" nutritional yeast " means. Just be sure you don't get the powder...

On a side note, I've read that behind India, Israel has the highest percentage

of vegetarians in the world.

I've never seen it in any market. I get it from Whole Foods or a

health food and vcitamin store.

It's used in recipes to give the cheesey taste and not have to use

dairy.

Whole Foods is awesome but be prepared because it's quite expensive, which is

why it has earned the nickname 'Whole Paycheck'.

My local Fred Meyer / Kroger has it in their bulk bins. Hope you find

some; it's yummy.

How far are you from a town with a natural foods store? It doesn't have

to be some ritzy glitzy store like Whole Foods. It just needs to be a

big enough place for a local natural foods market.

Nutritional yeast keeps very well, so if you can make a foray to

someplace that sells it in bulk, you should be able to get enough to

last you for 6 months for a reasonable price.

Here's an online source you might like to try -- Bob's Red Mill.

http://www.bobsredmill.com/product.php?productid=3628 & cat=0 & page=1

should get you to nutritional yeast. They charge $8.39 plus shipping for

a half-pound bag, which might be cheaper than driving somewhere if it's

a long trip.

It's definitely worth getting nutritional yeast. The tasty, cheezy stuff

makes a great cheese substitute in sauces. It tastes great as a topping,

too. Try sprinkling it on popcorn!

Cheers,

Trish

I live about 20 miles south of Indianapolis but I guess I live on the

wrong side of town! I guess maybe there are fewer vegetarians because

--places like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc are all on the north

side. But there is a suburb here onthe southside that I can check out

for natural foods stores too . (My local health food store doesn't

seem to sell enough vegetarian products to make it profitable to stock

them.) Thanks for the link to the online source for nutritional yeast---

It must be challenging. Living in a West Coast city spoils me, I think.

I have so many options here. Even my local -- gosh, what do you call a

store like Fred Meyer, an everything store? -- has a fine nutrition

section where I can get organic beans in bulk and things like

nutritional yeast. We also have a wide variety of Asian and Latino

markets. If I read a recipe that calls for something like " tamarind, "

for instance, I can get it somewhere.

So the south side of Indy is a natural foods desert? My folks used to

live in place like that, a small city in North Carolina, and when I

visited them I realized how easy I have it out west. There was one small

natural foods store in the center of town. If you didn't like that,

you'd better like bacon fat in your collards!

Cheers,

Trish

I live on the east coast and have a large variety of stores to choose from for

vegetarian and health food items. My favorite is Wegmans, second Trader Joe's,

but there's Whole foods, and a bunch of little health food stores around, two

Asian markets close by. Not to mention, I'm a stones throw away from Philly, I

get my herbs and oils from Penn Herb. Although its easier and cheaper to buy on

line. They have great stuff, lots of homeopathic remedies and herbs for my

culinary and incense needs. They close at 5:00 PM, I get done work at 6.

So just move to Merchantville NJ, we can hang out

I'm off work Monday and I'm going to Whole Foods -- I'll take my time

exploring --sounds like I can plan on having lunch too--Yes I envy all

of you people who live in areas where these foods are available

everyday. Looking on the bright side, though-- I'll be able to buy

more because my hubby will know I won't be making the trip back to the

I don't know if Bloomington would be a shorter/easier drive for you

from where you live but there are some good stores for vegetarians in

Bloomington. Bloomingfoods is the main one that comes to my mind. It's

a co-op but they also allow non-members shop in the store and they

have a lunch/deli so if you wanted to get lunch you could do so.

Also, several Kroger stores have large vegetarian/health food

selections- not ideal but better than nothing.

My lil' sister lives in Plainfield and mentioned that there is a guy

who delivers in season organic produce in the Indianapolis area. I

can't think of his name or website right now but if you are interested

I could find out for you.

At least you have something somewhat close. I am a vegetarian in no-

veg-head land! I live in Southwest Indiana and unless I want to drive

50++ miles to get some good veggie stuff I usually order it online

(non-perishable.) www.veganessentials.com has a pretty good variety of

things and they take paypal. I have had good luck with everything that

I have gotten from them- including some awsome " veggie leather " ugg-

like boots.

Us Hoosier Veggies have to stick together! There are so few of us!!

Bloomingfoods is great! I lived in Columbus for 13 years and used

to drive to Bloomington every week or two. Lots of veggie friendly

restaurants in Bloomington also. I remember Lennies (great

calzones) was one of our favorites. I now live in Idaho and there

are almost no vegetarians in this part of the country. We do have a

great Co-Op though.

Great idea, thanks. Yes, there seem to be a lot of vegetarians in

Bloomington, with IU it's much different than my small town. I used to

work in Bloomington before I got laid off last November but that was

before I became a vegetarian--I was in Bloomingfoods a couple of

times, though and it was interesting--I couldn't really appreciate

then. It is about an hour away too. There's another smaller natural

foods market in Bloomington but I forget the name--on a certain day of

the week they have a discount--do you happen to know about that one?

Since they are about the same distance I could go either way and I was

tempted to go to WholeFoods just because it sounds so big. I'm off

work Mon & was going to go but had a flat tire today and my hubby

says I can't go in his truck--yuk! I live in Franklin--I'ved worked

in Columbus too.

Where is Lennies? Is it Italian? Is it near campus or the mall? Thanks!

Sorry about the multiple posts today....

I'm very new at lowfat vegan cooking. Week three to be exact.

I was looking at some videos on Youtube and noticed the use of

Nutritional yeast flakes.

Do any of you use them?

Would the use of yeast contribute to the production of candida albicans?

How do you generally use them?

Thanks for your info.

learning curve is huge)

Hi Timothy

Yes, I always have a jar of nutritional yeast flakes on hand! they're

very handy for adding a bit of oomph to meal (either during cooking, or

sprinkled on top as a condiment).

I do not believe they contribute to candida.

The flavour is quite strong. You could start by just sprinkling a

little on top of a meal - on pasta instead of parmesan, for example.

Best wishes, and congratulations on your new healthy diet!
