.... and what is wrong with vegan spread and vegan cheese? I'm sorry

you found it too difficult to become a vegan.

What was the purpose of telling us that you are eating butter and

cheese 'right now'. Was it just a lack of sensitivity?

Hi Bill,

I have to agree with you that it is most definitely a worthwhile

endeavor. It will take each and every one of us composting in our own

yards and gardens to bring about any significant change via mainstream

agriculture. I may be amiss but I believe part of this is due to our

just blindly accepting what we are given/sold without demanding organic.

But we can and will change this of this I am positive.

I salute you on your 14 years of composting and gardening and 4 years of

permaculture. Awesome. Thanks for sharing this Bill.

Not to start another thread on " wheatgrass " but from the

reading's I've done (which now seem suspect if b12 is poop) i

was under the impression that I was getting b12 daily from the

wheatgrass I grow and drink.

Hi Bill,

B-12 is actually a product of the cyano-bacteria's metabolism so in

essence Elchanan is correct in calling it poop, though that tends to

lend a rather unhealthy sound to the idea that we need it in our diets.

It is my understanding that cyano-bacteria exist everywhere, in the air,

water and land. If you are growing your own wheatgrass, and aren't

fumigating, insecticiding, chemical fertilizing, etc. then you are most

likely getting B-12.

However, I would like to hear from Elchanan about these B-12 analogs I

keep hearing about that supposedly bind with the B-12 uptake sites in

the body preventing us from getting the true B-12. Any info on this

Elchanan? Bob? Anyone?

Hope this helps you Bill.

Yes, it does. I use only organic potting soil and soak my seeds

in kelp/seaweed liquid and water and I hope that is a good

start..

Thanks Mary, I think most of that actually comes from Stephen Walsh book - Plant Based Nutrition and health, which I have just finished skimming.( I managed to get my library to order a copy, so that it may get more coverage & The Vegan Society benefits from the sale also).

B12

B12 is a necessary vitamin that vegans do not get as they don't consume any

meat, eggs or dairy products. Vegetarians do so they don't need the supplement.

You can get B12 in your regular vitamins (cobalamin is the best form), but the

" under your tongue " (sublingual lozenge) is assimilated by your body better.

Your body doesn't make this particular vitamin so you have to use outside

sources...it used to be on our foods in the dirt...LOL... and is exclusively

synthesized by bacteria and found primarily in meat, eggs and dairy products.

You could just not wash your veggies and if the right bacteria is on it that

will work, however, you really don't want to do that as you may then ingest

e-coli too along with a lot of other little meanies or chemicals. You need very

little B12 and as a matter of fact your body stores it and reabsorbs it and it

takes a few years to exhaust that storage. However if you do the consequences

are serious and can't be reversed. There are different ranges for the B12

intake...I just kind of look at it as getting 3 mcg a day is safe...and most of

the tablets out there are way more than that...like 1,000 or more. So I take it

a couple of times a week knowing that my body will just dump an excess anyway. I

don't know why they put so much in the supplements but they do and it isn't

thought to be toxic. Some people rely on food stuffs to get it like Red Star

Nutritional Yeast ( a lot of foods are fortified with it) but they are not sure

that is adequate or that all absorb it well so I go for the vitamin. I use one

put out by VegLife Vegan B12, it has 1,000 mcg the lowest I could find and it

has 400 mcg folic acid. There are 50 lozenges and $5.25 (US). Since I only take

it 2 times a week it seems cheaper and tastier than some of the other B12

sources that may not be so reliable. It uses Stevia leaf extract for the

sweetener.

You can look it up on the net for more information...a short one is:

What does the B12 do? I've never heard of the under the tongue stuff -

I'll have to look for it.

If you are a vegan please do not forget to take B12...the kind that

melts in your mouth under your tongue. It is very cheap.

I think that the books and the nutritional talks I have been to are always

saying Red Star nutritional yeast which I mentioned...I dislike it so don't use

it and they are also saying that some people do not assimilate the B12 in food

stuff that is added like in soy milk. Older people too need more of it as their

systems don't extract it as well as younger people. My understanding is that the

B12 absorbs better into the body via the lingual lozenge rather than going

through the digestive tract. Whatever, it is very simple and cheaper than the

Red Star to take the tablet for me. Some people do well without the

supplementation, but who wants to risk that. I just don't really worry about

it...figure I am as healthy at this point as I will ever be anyway. I detest

flax seed oil too. Oh dear! Confession is good for the soul! LOL

good points Linda,

Blessings,

Chanda

PS. I take a vitamin every 4 days or so, just in case.

I am a rebel. I don't believe things should be based on a daily allowance but

rather a 72 hour allowance.

This gives us some adjusting for balance. Like some days I go to bed earlier

than other days so I don't have that extra yogurt, or some days I wake up

earlier so I wind up with an extra fruit or whatever or less grain one day and

more the next.

nevermind, I am just a rebel, LOL.

hugs,

During this year I have gone back and forth between being a vegan and a

vegetarian. I've been a vegetarian 6 years. I'm having some health

problems like being very dizzy at times and just not feeling well that

I think might be related to a B12 deficiency even though I take a B12

vitamin. My doctor did blood work on me a few months ago

but..nothing. It could be that he didn't do the right test?. I would

really like to conquer this

Has anyone out there had a B12 deficiency? What was it like? How did

you cure it? How was it diagnosed?

Thank you in advance for your ideas!

If you are taking B12 supplements the dizziness could come from

something else. While, to my knowledge, I've never had a B12

deficiency, I did go through several years of trying to find out why I

suddenly started having headaches -- as often as every two weeks --

while doctors ducked left and right saying it wasn't " their " area.

Over time I also became very tired, had difficulty sleeping, and

sometimes had memory problems. (Apparently causes of headaches are

difficult to diagnose, and there is no specialty that " owns " them.)

Finally a doctor recommended a series of diagnostic tests, and the

very first one hit paydirt -- A general ultrasound of my mid-section

turned up a gallstone that had moved out of the gallbladder into a

tube and gotten stuck. After that was removed, it was determined that

I needed my gallbladder removed. Sure enough, once I'd recovered from

surgery, I started feeling much better. Today I rarely have headaches,

I sleep well, and the memory issues have gone away.

While I have no idea what problem you are encountering, I learned an

important lesson from my experience -- when there is a problem that a

doctor is unable to diagnose, be aggressive about seeing doctor after

doctor until you find one that can help you figure out what is going on.

Sometimes we have to help out with our own diagnosing! Do you have a copy of the bloodwork report? I got mine and studied it carefully. I was severely low in vitamin D3. I had to ask the doc for explanations on the report. I am now taking a prescription for D3, not a supplement. Eventually I plan on going to a nutritionist or a better doctor than my primary to have a regular checkup for my bloodwork for everything possible. I want to make sure I do this right, as I just went vegan on March 19. Surprise to the world! My protein and calcium were perfect. But I guess there is some kind of link between vitamin D3 and calcium and they depend on each other. Oh, and my good cholesteral went up and my bad went down. My triglicerides went down.

All is getting better!

I find I feel better now after 6 weeks of my prescription D3. I don't know if it is a coincidence.
