No of course not.

Just that there is a vegan alternative for

everything so when people say “what do you eat” you can smugly

reply “everything you do – just that the source of the food is not

animal related”

I think

it is the one when you poach an egg and put it in an egg holder.

Tap off

the top of it, and then cut your toast into strips and dip them in the egg.

I have

No. Vegans are herbivores - do not eat anything that is or comes from

animals.

Nah still not.

a) the mother hen feels stress when she sees her batch of eggs has

gone

b) it’s theft

c) what happens to all the males

you have risk of campylobacter /

Never been in your position …

Erm

If you get egg poisoning it is?!?!?!??!?!

I read an article once saying chickens

will lay to replace eggs that are ‘missing / stolen’.

Don’t know much about it but maybe

you are stressing out your hens by removing the eggs and though they are free-range

they might not be as happy as if they could nest with their eggs. This is all I

can remember in this ethical minefield – does anyone else know any more

stuff on this topic?

(how much stress can a hen feel?)

(how much would it matter if you didn’t

eat them?)

When he bought the hens when they were young they would have come from a batch of chicks, and the male chicks in that batch would have been killed because they weren't needed for egg laying.

Hi Ron

> Are you vegan if you eat eggs?

No... the conversation is about trying to work out a way to create

vegan egg-substitutes, complete with shell, yoke & white...!

Hi Victoria

> what about freerange ones? if you know where they are coming

Freerange eggs still come from animals, and the definition of a vegan

is someone who doesn't consume any products from animals... so,

regardless of ethical considerations, if you consume eggs, you're not

vegan!

taking this from another persepctive

instead of wot we think, wot do you THINK victoria??

wot do you want to do, and why?

from a purely vegan point of view..in the strictest sense, ya can't eat the eggs...you are still consuming a product that comes from another creature..the eggs are meant to grow up into another chicken(whether er not there is a rooster to fertilize the lil buggers..that is why the chicken lays them)

we have modified chickens thru millions of generations to become lil egg laying machines...

and, does the chicken feel stress when she can't find her eggs? depends...depends a ton on the breed..most *modern* chickens have had broodiness bred out of them...broodiness is the ability to sit on an egg....most modern hens couldn't raise a family...

now..again..wot do you think

doesn't mean spit wot we tell you er urge you in the end..it all falls down to you?

yer brother already has the chickens..they are already gonna do wot they do..if they aren't bantams er a few other breeds, they are basically mutated egg laying factories.....

wot do you want to do?

why?

really...why?

and, those are questions i really mean u to ask yerself...not necessarily fer you to answer them online

:)

cheers

we have modified chickens thru millions of generations to become lil egg laying machines...

and, does the chicken feel stress when she can't find her eggs? depends...depends a ton on the breed..most *modern* chickens have had broodiness bred out of them...broodiness is the ability to sit on an egg....most modern hens couldn't raise a family...

You know, I never considered myself a big egg fan, but I used to have the hugest love for eggs benedict. It was probably the hollandaise sauce that got me. I've tried vegan substitutes, but they're just not the same. Now I can't remember the last time I ate an egg.

All I remember is tofu and turmeric. I hate turmeric. I probably don't need to simulate the eggs - I bet I would be happy with just hollandaise sauce over English muffins. Hollandaise sauce is made of lemon, butter, and egg yolks. Maybe the right combination of lemon, vegan margarine, and Ener-G would work. Not that I need it - I'm trying to lose the 60 lbs my bipolar meds made me gain. I certainly shouldn't be eating hollandaise sauce. :)

Love,

Anna

P.S. Now that I think about it, I only ever ate eggs benedict 3-4 times per year.

Anna,

Have you tried the version from How it all Vegan? They call it Faux

Eggs Benny and it is really quite good and not a drop of turmeric in

sight if I recall. I've made it several times and everyone in the

family likes it. Even managed to find vegan english muffins at

whole foods (most brands I've found have whey in them).

Thanks for the tip, Nancy. I've heard nothing but good things about How It

All Vegan and have been meaning to buy it. I didn't know most English

muffins have whey in them - I'll have to look out for that. No Whole Foods

here in Boise - just the Co-op and it's been awhile since I've checked out

the baked goods.

Oops - I hit send when I was trying to enter a space. I found this

online - it looks like it's the version I was talking about:

Faux Eggs Benedict

1 lb medium tofu

1/4 C apple cider vinegar

1/4 C olive oil

1/4 tsp salt

4 English muffins OR 8 slices bread

8 slices veggie bacon (store bought i.e. Smart Bacon, or homemade)

8 slices tomato

sauce:

1/2 C nutritional yeast flakes

2 Tbsp flour

1/2 tsp salt

1 C water

1Tbsp oil

1 Tbsp soy sauce or Bragg's

2 tsp Dijon mustard

Preheat oven to 450'. Drain tofu and cut into eight slices. In a

small bowl, combine oil, vinegar, and salt. Arrange tofu in a 6 x 9

baking dish and pour oil/vinegar over the top. Marinate for 15-30

minutes, turning tofu over occasionally so that each side is coated.

Bake approx. 20 minutes until crispy brown.

While tofu is baking, prepare sauce. In small saucepan, whisk

together yeast, flour and salt. Add water, oil, and soy sauce and

stir over medium heat until sauce starts to thicken. Stir in mustard

and simmer on low heat until ready to serve. Toast muffins or bread.

On each slice of bread, place 1 piece of veggie bacon, 1 piece of

tofu, and one tomato slice. Then cover with Benny sauce. Makes 4

servings.

Are Tesco and Sainsbury English shops? All we have here are Albertson's

(Boise is home to Albertson's HQ, so there's a store like every 5 blocks),

WinCo (cheap and good variety of veggie foods), and WalMart (which I try to

avoid). And of course the Boise Co-op, which is our local health food

store. Very pricey.
